Oh, well Austria fucked up pretty badly. Slovakia got released in Crisis and allied Serbs, then Slovaks declared war when Italy came for Italian cores and they just blobbed into Hungary. Later Italians dismantled KUK resulting in this fuckery and releasing Poland instead of Galicia, then I dismantled NGF because they would never fuck off from me, but because it was Poland released instead of Galicia all the states with polish minority(Silesia, posen) joined Poland. I just confirmed something really interesting (to me atleast) about CK2's Reaper's Due.

When there is a minor disease outbreak in a province, you don't really have a chance of contracting the disease. You have a chance of contracting the symptoms associated with it.

After contracting the symptoms, THEN you have a chance to contract a disease associated with the symptom.

If disease X ravages your land and this disease consists of cough, headache and vomiting, you have a % chance to get any of those symptoms each passing day.
If you get cough, you

>have any other disease associated with cough
>you are actually fine

This explains why cancer is so prevalent (got slightly fixed after the update) or why you get completely random diseases when there is an outbreak in your county.

Personally I find this really poorly made. The vanilla mechanic which simply increased your chance of getting the disease itself sounds way more reasonable.
It was obviously made like this so that they could show-off the changes of the dlc from the very first months of the game, when previously diseases were incidental predicaments and not the main focus of the game.

So now the plague has all of my holdings and my heirs are dropping like flies because they didn't close their gates like I did. Do I just sit here and wait it out?

Units don't have innate bonuses against others, they only get them through tactics.
Retinues are marginally better than most of your regular levies since they're based on your capital and its tech, which should be better than the rest of your realm so they have higher morale and off/def - if your capital's tech is ahead, that is.
Cultural retinues don't fight better than the unit type they're based on, though if your culture has a cultural building (like +15% heavy cavalry offensive from jousting lists) they'll also get that bonus.
Tactics change every few days in combat, depending on the traits and stats of the flanks commander (different flanks use different tactics) and the army composition, among other things. There are also different categories of combat phases (skirmish, advance, stand fast, charge etc) and the different phases have different affinity's to one another, so a stand fast phase might have a high likelyhood of progressing to an advance/charge phase.
Cultural tactics are tactics that are unique to the culture of the commander, like the superb Scottish Schiltron, Italian Pike Formation or the Mongol/Altaic horse archer tactic that resets the combat phase to skirmish where horse archers and light cavalry excel.

Morale defence is defence against morale damage, i.e losing morale when taking losses - it doesn't matter if you're attacking or defending.

to expand upon cultural tactics and answer your question regarding cultures with bad tactics; some are mediocre, like the Norse berserker charge. It gives heavy infantry 360% bonus damage and light infantry 120% bonus damage at the expense of taking 50% respectively 30% more damage in return. For pagan Norse rulers your armies will mostly consist of light infantry (which blows dick) along with some archers and heavy infantry - while the damage from the tactic is nice it will also make you take considerably more losses, gimping the morale of the already weak light infantry.

Cultural tactics are generally very good since they often don't have any downsides, but since you can't really reorganize your army in CK2 even 'good' ones like the Byzantine Embolon Charge will end up gimping parts of your army since you'll no doubt have lots of HI as a feudal lord. If you have a good tactic (Mongol>Scottish>Italian>rest) then by all means, try to capitalize on it.

Considering how little control you have over army composition (at best you can go with whatever setup you like through retinues once your cap/economy gets big enough to support a 100% retinue flank on its own) there isn't too much point in delving further into it; the previous anon was pretty spot on. You go with good commanders and try to utilize the terrain as best you can. If you're not cavalry-heavy I'd definitely recommend inviting high martial Scottish/Italian people to your court to serve as commanders though.

I've started playing DH recently and one of the things I really love is the use of 'beaches'. There's only a very limited number of provinces bordering the sea that you can invade, and you can't invade them unless you have marines (who can start the amphibious assault mission).

I like this much better because:
1. It actually gives marines a purpose. You now need to build them to open up new strategic options rather than a marginal boost to something everyone can do.
2. Garissons are useful because you don't need to spam them for every province (which makes them less useful because now you need so many of them that they're just not worth the IC). Just a handful of them, put one or two on every beach and you have a close to impregnable fortress
3. For some reason, Darkest Hour actually has semi-intelligent AI that will invade unguarded beaches (imagine my surprise when I was playing Italy and the British actually invade Crete)

It's insane how good this game is compared to HoI III and especially HoI IV.
