Nah, no one's saying he's unworthy of hate, but it's also kind of weird when people are so vehement about it and act like the only aspect of his character we see is some kind of psychopathic and villainous sadist?

Goro is a polarizing character. The game itself goes for a pretty sympathetic angle with him post betrayal, and he did sacrifice himself in the end for the party because they genuinely accepted him, which is what makes him work as a character. People wouldn't like him half as much if he didn't.

Also, saying he's a "complete" psychopath is a stupid meme that oversimplifies the intent and themes of the game.

Psychopaths don't feel remorse. They're also not motivated by a need for acceptance, love, or the wish to destroy their shitty dads. Goro still wanted to make Shido repent for his sins, you know. The game goes out of its way to establish actual reasoning behind his actions.

As with nearly every other villain in the game, the whole point is that there are times people do extremely harmful things because of desires, and let corruption into their hearts as a result. Hence why the thieves can make the perpetrators confess everything by stealing their twisted desires.
