Either way it seems the mod author actually only has the latest version of the mod or has updated it past the previous ones, since he doesn't seem to have them on Nexus anymore, so I'm not entirely sure of the state of the mod right now.

When you have armies clash and one is signficanlty larger than the other, the game represents this by increasing the ratio of enemies on the battlefield while lowering the amount of your men.

So say in a 200 vs. 600 men fight, the 600 man party gets to have more troops deployed at any one time.

However, if you have a high enough tactics skill, the game will let you bring the same amount of troops as the other side. It's a late-game skill, but it lets your party of elite troops effectively defeat any sized army that is thrown at you.
Otherwise, even you elites could end up getting swamped.
