I was thinking that once you've explored an area you could still accept quests as normal and be transported to the hunting ground, but you could also just wander the world and get jumped by Jho. Think of Moga Woods freehunting on a much larger scale.

As a free hunt It could work I guess, but hunting grounds would need to be closed off areas and the world is too large to get to different biomes without an airship, boat, or caravan.
Open world is a meme, the next step in such a direction would be a singular zone with generally the same structure as the current maps but with shorter connections you walk/climb accross. Without the hardware limitations of the 3ds this would definitely be possible.

I think a shotgun style gunner weapon would be cool. Something similar to graves (from LoL), in that you can maneouver and dodge with the weapon recoil.

I think a really up-close gunner weapon would be pretty different (other than bow)

bread and butter is Crit Draw and Focus, from there you are adding these depending on weapon/monster you are fighting:

Attack up or weakness exploit if your charm allows it.

Rogue Sedition is also a fine choice. Lower damage but natural purple and auto sharpens as you roll which a great sword is always doing. It has one slot and with no need for S+1 you have greater freedom of choice with your skills. Personally I use a set with the following:

HG Earplugs
Tremor Res
Critical Draw
Focus
Quick Sheath

It isn't optimally damage stacked but it works for everything. A good convenience set.

A crit deals 1.25x damage. It's not stronger than a strong charge but you don't have the opportunity to use the strong charge all the time. Your draw attack will make up 90% of your damage in a quest. Making your main attack 25% stronger is pretty good, yeah. It's a core skill right along with focus.

It's good when you're playing by yourself because the monster only has you to target and you can hit it in the head every time. In multiplayer it's not very useful because it can turn to face any player on the team so you can't reliably set up a head snipe as well as you can alone.

Do Apex monsters get new moves? I just fought Apex Zinogre and he has this red fulgur explosive bug move that I don't remember seeing in any game, maybe 3U G Rank Stygian but I could be making it up

It's good, just use striker instead of adept. Adept gets a counter from a perfect guard but it loses the counter attack so you can't cancel into the guard. Adept is still okay, just not as good as you'd think it would be. Guard+1 should be good enough.

2-5 could be counted as one series, 6 is it's own beast and 7-8 do things differently from the other entries and 9 is looking to be something else too.

Another thing to compare: The jump and differences from SW 1 to SW2. The way you played the games didn't change that much but the main goals and how you interact with the mechanics certainly did.

Finally, Toukiden 2 - One game and one revision later they are trying to distance themselves further from Monhun and that is a -good thing- for Monster hunter fans.

Toukiden 2 is still a hunting game but now has some twists in their base mechanics, challenge design and even how you traverse the world. I say they haven't done a game that I can call good without reservations, but they are on the right track.

Armour skills work on a "critical mass" system. Either you have enough points to activate the skill or you don't, and any points beyond that are wasted.

For example, +10 Attack gives Attack up Small (AuS), +15 gives Au Medium, but 13 points is still AuS.

Rule of thumb is that if the amount of points on your equipped gear is 10 or greater, a skill will active. Likewise, some skills even have a negative counterpart. In this screenshot, the 'Insight', 'Expert', and 'Recoil' skills aren't doing shit because there are not enough points to activate either.
