What kinds of magic are we getting in the myth and magic updates, I've heard there will be a slider and stuff, but what does this mean apart from choosing between worlds either having magic or not?

Elemental magic, light and dark magic, healing magic, blood magic, rituals, miracles, curses, voodoo, illusion magic, geomancy, mind control, time magic...

There's so many types of magic I'd love to see in DF. Plus, Toady could get real creative with the type of magic he adds, and could come up with some crazy shit, like Gem magic or something.

Huh, 65x65 is just about the same size as the Golden Triangle (DFW+Denton area) but it's kinda weird since I've crossed distances on bikes that can be distinguished on that map scale (the g in Arlington on I-45 down to the far side of the first n on I-35 E) and I can actually kinda relate that to crossing a pocket world now.

Zombies got a significant buff in .40, possibly accidental, that put them on the level of husks/thralls. They started coming armored then, too. They were nerfed back to sanity in .42, and aren't much more of a threat than goblins unless the necromancer is still around. You would have a zombie cyclops and a weresheep child zombie if it were.

I'm sure something like apostles could be added to dwarf fortress, although it would require the source code. They could function a lot like forgotten beasts, with a dash of werebeasts thrown in, except the transformation could be at will.

That's a strange mood. They need specific materials to build something and if they're just standing at the workshop doing nothing, then the material needed isn't available. Some moods let you see what's needed by viewing the workshop.
If you don't have what the Dwarf wants, hope you can either make it, or that the next caravan will arrive soon with what he needs and buy it right away, otherwise, they'll eventually go berserk.

I also wish I could see what I requested the previous year while setting priorities for the next year. If you don't care about a long worldgen then you can ignore all the hyperbolic doomsayers. That's unfun for entirely different reasons. Or at least not optimally fun, if you're going to play fort mode. Having high civs and sites and a long history will severely limit your embark options, and the many roads and tunnels will make searching for a site difficult. In addition, high savagery limits the valid initial placements for civs, which can lead to a whole lot of rejections at the beginning. In fort mode you'll only ever interact with one civ from each entity, so having high civs won't do anything but remove embarkable sites and reduce the number of histfig slots available for the civs you do end up interacting with. Low or medium civs with high sites is a better option in this case, with medium savagery. If you're going to run your world for more than a few hundred years I highly recommend removing the road and tunnel building tags from dwarves and humans in entity_default so that you can actually see the topography of the map without moving the cursor over each tile.

Mostly messing with climate-related settings to create inhospitable hellscapes. You can also increase the number of megas/semis/titans to apocalyptic levels, radically increase the number of civs to see more necros/vamps/werebeasts, that sort of thing.

Worlds rarely leave the age of myth due to a bug introduced in .40.16 that causes megas/semis/titans/FBs to almost never lose in worldgen duels. As long as their numbers remain high the world won't leave the age of myth, though if you have extreme number of civs you may see something like "age of the dragon" or "age of the forest titan and bronze colossus" etc.

Elves are racially inclined toward hubris, laziness, and a lack of patience (ironic for an immortal race,) but they've also got some the highest attributes of the big 5 and are even better at artistic and abstract thinking than the average dwarf, though the best dwarven art and science can produce still beat out the elves.

The edge dwarvenkind has is in physical and mental strength, but based purely on their stat lines elves probably are the best race all in all. They're crippled by their primitive culture though, so elven civs typically get BTFO in worldgen if they ever have a serious opponent.

I don't know whether the replies you got are either completely lack of information or simply a bad meme (as it happens, lately you can't ask a single question without getting at least one child barfing some stupid joke) but they're not, in essence, right at all.

Although it's constantly memed that Toady doesn't care about FPS, the game offers several options to extended the life of your fort. You can control your own population, your embark, the amount of invaders and visitors, the world size, history, population and several other options, disable several things which could slow you down, and obviously, get used to a slower frame rate. I've run fortresses for hundreds of years without any proper tweaking, on garbage setups, by controlling embark and population size.

Job distribution is the heart of it, if you have the hang of managing your dwarves properly, forts with over 50 citizens will feel bloated and not efficient at all. As populations gets bigger, you'll end up with lots of military fodder and engravers, whose best utility is saving time, which is not as much of a concern. The military screen is often overlooked in favor of dedicated military, but you may very well completely rid your fort or limit your squads to actual working citizens, as long as you can set up the training months and their availability well. I do advise to have at least one dedicated squad though, and limit them to 5 soldiers each for better management.

If you ever look into a real megaproject or something really time consuming, all of this is completely necessary, anyone who has at least once done something similar has a hang for dealing with FPS death. I've seen forts with 20 dwarves that are completely functional and efficient. If you can set it up right, your fort will go for hundreds and hundreds of years until you get bored with it.

Dropped clothes is generally due to dwarves acquiring a new clothing item and just throwing the old one on the ground because they have nowhere to put it. Put cabinets in your dwarves rooms and they should automatically store their old clothes in them.

This one's cool. It's really similar to the hamlets in DF.

DF really did a good job at having sites look organic. The non-human sites are mediocre, but the current human sites are masterpieces.

I know NO game that generates hamlets and towns as well as DF does. The RNG'd sites in Daggerfall come closest, but the module system there is a bit too predictable

Even though they are pretty repetitive, there is still a lot of room for surprises (i.e.when a sewer just happens to connect to a dungeon or catacomb, or when you get a really cool temple towering over a canyon-esque river junction).

Give everyone who gets bitten a custom nickname or profession nickname to easier tell them apart from the rest. If the bite didn't break the skin, they'll be fine. If it does break the skin, they have a big risk of getting infected.

Then, put everyone who got bitten in their own militia squad, but don't give them any weapons or armour. Station them far away from your civilians, and wall them in.

Then, you wait until the next transformation date. You can find a table showing all transformation dates on the wiki.

When they turn (if they turn), you open up the wall and send in your militia to kill them.

If they don't turn, then they're fine.

Start adventure mode.

Gather up some companions from a tavern somewhere (you may have to kill some big monster and brag about it first to impress them).

Go into the wilderness, find a good spot for a hideout. The cut down some trees and build it.

Finally, assign a main hall in the hideout, then use the main hall to claim the site under the name of a new faction that you start and name.

Then, invite your companions into the faction (you may have to impress them by killing some beast first).

Now, you have your feral band and a secret hideout. Just use the hideout as yuor base of operations, when raiding the surrounding settlements as you wish.

This is your pick axe. Every time something new happens this is a great place to start. Always always always check the wiki first before you come here to ask questions. 99% of what you come across is more then adequately explained. However, and Im guilty of this, coming to /dfg/ to get things explained better is perfectly fine.

These are your eyes. Pressing [k] lets you look around your map. It will let you see what tiles are what. Pressing [v] is similar but instead lets you see exactly what the unit on that particular tile is. [u] is more of a generalized units overview, it will show you all the units on the map at once. By scrolling down to a specific unit you can then press [z] and be magically whisked to that unit.

You will lose. Often. Sometimes it will be your own fault (when I first played, I never made a cloth industry. By year 2 my dwarves clothes had rotted off their bodies which began a tantrum spiral), and sometimes it will be entirely out of your hands. This is fine, just make a new fort and start again. Its all a learning experience.

Please come back and tell us how youre first fort went. Include pictures of your fort layout and how you failed.

I wrote this because these were the things that I had trouble with when I first started. Learn from my mistakes anon.
