Anyway, I'll try to make it short this time, hopefully someone will reply.
I'm kinda autistic. Can't stand the dialogue box text in the middle of the screen in vanilla sw4. NOT the objective graphics you can turn off, the dialogue text box itself. It covers the action.

They fixed this in II. So I bought it, thinking it's the xtreme legends equivalent and planned to play it as my first sw. Then I hear from people here it's bad. The question is, is it really? Is it THAT bad? If I have never played the original or any sw?

Honestly, don't worry about knowing how to do everything right away. It's easier to figure out what to do the more you play, so using the auto feature early on takes the load off a bit. Once you know the game enough that you can tell the AI control is completely retarded, you're ready to do a lot of the stuff on your own. At least until you control so many cities that you're forced to automate a lot of the stuff again.

No, not exactly. They allow you to further develop the buildings adjacent to that building. Though different type of building require different stats to be developed properly, like the farm requires water control, but not martial arts.

The only officer who served every kingdom was Mi Fang so it might be him.

Mi Fang was originally an officer under Tao Qian who was absorbed into Liu Bei’s army when he took over Xu Province. In 198, Liu Bei and company surrendered to Cao Cao and became part of his army.

Some time between 198 and 200 (so probably in 199), Mi Fang served Cao Cao as Magistrate of Pengcheng.

In 200, Liu Bei betrayed Cao Cao and attacked Xu Province. Mi Fang sided with his his brother-in-law (Liu Bei), so he left Cao Cao to join Liu Bei.
In 219, Mi Fang surrendered to Wu, where he remained for the rest of his life.

Is anyone else excited for Toukiden 2? It seems like its gonna be pretty fun. Not preordering though.

Started SOI with Nobuhide and I now just beat the coalition against Nobunaga. Missed some quests here and there since it's my first time, playing on easy mode, and I'm probably years ahead of the actual history.

Is there a point to see the rest of this save through, i.e. do quests until they stop triggering, then take over Nihon, or should I just start from the different scenarios after I reach them, so as to trigger the quests I missed?

Like, there was the guy who killed the previous shogun who collaborated with the current one against Nobunaga, but the event never triggered on my original run, had to start from the coalition scenario to get it.

I think I got used to how to play SOIA, I'm playing as my waifu Ginchiyo (on of the recommended playthrough). Is there something I should/shouldn't do to get the campaign she is supposed to have? For now I'm strictly sticking to the quests.
Another thing, I've been developping my friendship with Muneshige, Dosetsu and one Yoshika girl that spawned early on, should I just befriend everyone I like to obtain their trait? And aside for that what are the advantages of getting the friendship above the bare minimium to not get betrayed?

What was Tokugawa's endgame in supporting Nobunaga? What changed after his death?

The Tokugawa didn't have much choice at the time, it was about ensuring their survival. Ieyasu was waiting for his time to come, you know how his thing is to be a patient man that endured much hardships until he had a chance to take everything over like he eventually did.
If we go by the common narrative Nobunaga was the bad guy because he was insane and ruthless and Ieyasu was the good caring guy but it's mostly because he won and demonized everyone else. If you are versed in the Three Kingdoms you can kinda do a very very loose parallel with Cao Cao and Liu Bei. Nobunaga wasn't crazy for no reason, it was mostly a tactic to ensure his success and it worked damn good since he did like 90% of the work toward unification. He arguably did better for the people too since he was the first to understand that japan needed to modernize his social structure, among other things he was the first to use firearms in a grand scale battle and introduced social policies that allowed dirty paesants to climb the social ladder if they deserved it, Hideyoshi being the lampant example. Ieyasu on the other hand promptly did everything he could the ensure the status quo once he won and favored class segregation the segregation of japan itself. In the end you could look at Ieyasu like a crafty opportunist and a backstabber. So there is much point in talking about good guys vs bad guys. If we talk about the smaller factions there are some which arguably did nothing wrong, like the Date for example.

Personally I think the Shimazu are a good clan to start/play with in SoI. They have a clear goal to work towards at the start (uniting Kyushu), start in a good spot with little enemies and a mountain chain separating them between the Otomo in the north, and they have a good amount of home-grown officers that have great stats and traits like Takahisa's sons and family.

Finished Wu, just started playing Shu. So these are the good heroes then, driven by emotion. I kinda agree with what Cao Cao said, being good alone doesn't do shit. Judging only by playing 8's campaigns of Wei and Wu and the start of Shu, guess I'm more of a Wei man myself. I don't think it's bad to be strong and ambitious. I also like Wu. Family and friends are important. So yeah, Wei then Wu then Shu for me.

Please don't tell me how they actually were in real life because frankly, I don't give a shit. I'm just playing the damn game and enjoying its fantasy version of the story.

You should really reconsider that point of view, often times the real life version of events/characters is more interesting/better than the DW version. For example, Taishi Ci is kinda bland in the Wu campaign right? In real life: The man who made delivering his boss’s mail an epic quest. The man who single-handedly saved Kong Rong and his soldiers from an entire army. He was a scholar in his youth, and he was also tough enough to go hand-to-hand with Sun Ce. He was also one of the greatest bowmen of the age. And, again, he had a deep devotion to his mother. He was a fascinating man, and the DW version has none of his interesting traits.

Another example, would be Xu Huang who is REALLY bland in DW. In real life, Xu Huang was a withdrawn, antisocial man who pushed his soldiers so hard they didn’t even get a lunch break. He joined bandits to fight Dong Zhuo, he helped Li Jue and Jia Xu seize the government, then helped the emperor escape from Chang'an. In battle, he used deceptive tactics where he pretended to be losing, then suddenly reverse the battle and score victory. He was also a very cautious man who always kept scouts out far ahead of his army.

That's not even mentioning the countless generic NPC's in DW who we're absolutely based in real life.

This, there's really nothing wrong with associating Zhuge Liang with genius and knowledge. The real one, was after all quite intellegent. it's just that Zhuge Liang wasn't suited for military leadership, despite what people will tell you. It would be mistaken of me to say that the real Zhuge Liang was completely talentless, but his talents were not suited to the military. He was an accomplished scholar who wrote numerous commentaries and essays, and - for better or worse - became the original source of written history regarding Shu. He was a skilled economist and legal authority who helped to maintain Shu’s economy and build up the state’s infrastructure, and he helped write the legal code as well. He was certainly one of the state’s finest administrators, and it’s easy to understand why Liu Bei left him in charge of civil affairs - and why he left the military to Li Yan.

Going back to play a bit of dw5 made me realize how much these games have changed. Movesets felt a lot simpler and stiff and had a slower "rhythm". Also, it feels like they have more impact, more hit effects. In 8, you press buttons and your character starts doing crazy flashy shit. I doubt it's motion capture but it feels like it flows, unlike the classic games.

Enemies were fewer and not as braindead, like they actually sometimes attack instead of just standing there. Anyway, I like both modern and classic but they really feel different. Also, thank fuck for horse whistle.

Well, it's just that the reason I don't have any confidence is because the introduced characters are usually at their most interestin in the first game, and devolve afterwards. It would make sense that more characters leaves less time to spend on developing the old ones, but they mostly just devolve into stereotypes rather than keeping the characters static. I think of all the SW4 style games, if you want the best balance of good story and good gameplay, you should get SWC3 for Vita or 3DS.

Besides that, all of them are good. Even 4-II, but 4-II is mostly side story type things which, while often incredibly cool, aren't quite what you came for.

Plus, 4-II changed up the combat so officers tech out of every juggle, so everyone's uppercut combo is worthless.

SW4E has amazing lips.

I think DW9 could really benefit from being open world. It annoys me that at Guandu, Xu You defects and tells you to burn the grain at Wuchao, so you just run for like 20 seconds to the west and you're at "Wuchao". I also think that if they enlarge the battlefields and open them up a bit instead of hallway simulator it would be nice, since due to the time to travel between areas then you would have to commit to a line of attack/defense while competent allies in other areas that would manage fine on their own without your direct assistance. Of course KT being KT, I bet open world means that you just walk from battle to battle and then load in to KT-patented hallway battlefields.

Absolutely not. Musou doesn't take much in the way of skill to begin with. Far more in the way of stats and it is certainly perfectly possible that certain musou scenarios benefit you far more to starting on Easy rather than Normal.

Way of the Samurai 3 and 4, and arguably Akiba's Trip*, were DEFINITELY like this. You needed to start on Easy unless you planned to do a LOT of grind before your first clear.

*AT twisted the knife by calling easy "casual." But at least in AT grinding was very straightforward and you could, if you survived a rough opening, get through to the end. But you were probably in for 3-4 plays at minimum and had nothing to prove.

Doesn't seem like you can. Later on, any city that your troops take will be added to the district.

Every character in the position to appoint more people means more possible orders. Ruler has 2 personal + any from the 3 ministers, then viceroy has 2 more + ministers in his district, then governors have 2 more + ministers in their cities. If you're a ruler/viceroy you don't want any city under your direct command because that's less effective as more orders lead to more actions. The number of officers depends on what you want from the city, how close to the frontlines it is, etc. You want enough officers to effectively use the soldiers in the cities, if you have a city close to the enemy with 90k troops but your officers there can command only 30-40k, you're doing something wrong.

That's the most effective, but usually you don't have enough officers for this shit so you don't have to worry to do it perfectly. And if your force is large enough to have viceroyalties, eventually some cities will be left behind, to far to provide any manpower support, so you can leave them completely empty and use them only as a source of gold/supplies for the frontlines.

PUK fixes that by bandit/tribe/nomad raids that can randomly appear, pillage your lands and even take cities away from you.

Yes, the events will always fire when they can and officers killed by events are done for. With long-lived you will have someone like Guo Jia surviving longer, since his lifespan is now extended and there's no event that kills him.

Unfortunately, if you want an officer to survive ahistorically you have to play as him and avoid the thing that kills him, there's no other way.

Playing Gongsun Zan since you start with a few towns and defensible land. I sent Zhao Yun up north with Gongsun Xu to conquer the north, but when they got there I found a full stack guarding the bridge, so a deadlock has occurred since Gongsun Zan and the other generals are fighting and holding off Yuan Shao further south so no reinforcements will arrive.

Since Yuan Shao is growing in power I've decided to go ahead and attack with Zhao Yun to break the deadlock so I can sweep up and head back south in case of an invasion. I deployed my infantry on a small hill lead while Zhao Yun leads the cavalry for domination of the flank to route enemy cavalry and smash the enemy infantry from behind. On the hill my infantry have been fighting skirmishers but soon they will probably commit to an attack on the hill so Zhao Yun has to quickly route enemy cavalry which is about equal to mine own. I'm mostly posting this because I want to bump the thread from death even though this should be in /twg/ ;_;

ZHAO FUCKING YUN saves the battle single-handedly by slaying enemy general and routing the cavalry, so now the cavalry is almost their and will crush the enemy from behind just as the center was breaking. I hope he doesn't end up defecting to Liu Bei.

Theres some faction unique units. Just from skimming the roster in custom battles Liu Bei gets some unique heavy infantry, Cao Cao gets some unique cavalry, and some factions have unique colors for their units. Other than that the roster is mostly the same for most factions with slight variations.

Wellllllll, speaking as somebody that's played a shitload of Shogun 2 and Sphere of Influence- Shogun 2 is better. In my opinion.

They're aiming for two different things however. Nobunaga's Ambition Sphere of Influence is a game with far deeper officer management, civics, and diplomacy. Shogun 2 is about the battles. And they are glorious. Which by the way might be a problem if you have a toaster, it's very resource intensive. But the battles are wonderful. I highly recommend it, but it is purely about the warfare, and everything else is window dressing around the maneuvering, flanking, and charging in battles.

Of especial note is Fall of the Samurai depicting the Meiji Restoration when Japan suddenly catapulted into the modern era of artillery, rifles, and ironclad steamships.

After the heroic victory, Zhao Yun mopped up the rest of the enemy army in a follow-up battle and is now in position to siege the Liangdong capital. I was given the option to adopt him into the Gongsun family and name him the heir so I did, so hopefully fucking Liu Bei doesn't take him away from me.

They are pretty much different games. Shogun 2 is more about the battles and less grand strategy, while SoI is more about clan/officer management and diplomacy. Shogun 2 is more polished imo while SoI is your standard KT game where it's a really good game, but it's lacks something that prevents it from being amazing

sort of? there's various stats that aren't in regular medieval 2 like personal goal, fealty, or skill at certain types of battles like ambushes or boat combat. I think it does a decent job at trying to differentiate the generals of the time as much as possible within the medieval 2 framework.

I listened to them them back when it was dub only in the games and even now that I play with japanese voices, they're still the chinese names in the subs. For example, Cao Cao. Seems fine to me now. Boy, it was imposible to take seriously back then.

I've been here for a month and I still have no idea what Dadadu or BAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO is.
