for anyone who might have missed it, since i posted this at like 6 am in a dying thread:

okay, without further ado, here's the speedometer mod:

this is a step down from the particle editing (from hex editing down to very simple scripting), but still took some more work than usual to get working. there is so little useful documentation for using squirrel in source, everything is for lua, and i ended up not even being able to get it to work quite how i wanted.
in a nutshell, this will activate and slightly modify a speedometer that respawn snuck into the live fire update. originally it would use metric or imperial depending on whether or not you were you playing the game in english, but that's stupid. instead, it will default to imperial and you can switch to metric by setting "+password "metric"" as a launch option in origin or setting the appropriate setting to "metric" in your client config. this is an annoying workaround being unable to make a new convar in the vscript, respawn seems to have killed the appropriate function, but it works out since the password convar is completely unused and dummied out.
i CANNOT change the way the color gradient works, stop it from fading out, add other units, etc.; the UI script that runs the actual speedometer is inside the RPAKs that cannot currently be opened. so please don't ask.

and, while i'm at it here is a fix to the crosshairs mod to fix the leadwall and cold war's crosshairs:

i can't really tell if this fixes the issue with meadows since i haven't encountered it, so please let me know if it does or doesn't if you get a chance

the one on boomtown is not me playing great. about double jumping, sometimes its necessary with the cold war, depending on enemy distance, so that you dont blow yourself up. i dont think i needed to do it in the boomtown clip, but it has saved my life a few times.

that is definitely not a thing. pilot melee has a fixed lunge range of about 8 feet and 30 degrees of your view. the main issue with melee is that the tickrate is so low that melee hits tend to not get communicated to the server before you're already dead, and on top of that because the vision check is a cone from the player it's less reliable at close ranges and for some reasons to seem to rarely work at all if you're not in mid-air.

Not really, but it can help a lot. Just remember your meterless moves and you'll be fine once you're up. Certain maps, where GETTING high takes a lot of meter, benefit more from it. But on something like stacks or drydock, getting high takes two seconds, so just use cornering and corrections and you'll never burn any meter to begin with

Multiplayer is solid. With the new matchmaking system, most all modes are seeing consistent play, instead of only Attrition and maybe one other mode. Across all three platforms, the population isn't big compared to other AAA shooters, but it's stable, and you will always be able to reliably find a game at most any hour of the day, which is most important.

On the whole, TF2 improves on most everything from the first game. The system is a bit more polished, and there's more toys to work with.

The singleplayer campaign is a treat, one of the best FPS campaigns in a long while. It's not long, but it doesn't overstay its welcome. The platforming and basic puzzles break up the gunfights and Titan fights, and the story is cheesy enough that it's forgiveable. The interactions between Jack Cooper and BT are the bow that ties the whole package together.

TF2 has no season pass. All gameplay-related DLC, including maps, modes, weapons and more, will be free for everyone. The only things you can purchase are cosmetics, like exclusive camos/warpaints, nose art, banner images and icons, and Prime Titans, which are just elaborate remodels with new animations.

It also helps that, as mentioned in the OP, the game is available on a massive discount right now (EA Publisher Sale). $32 for a AAA shooter with some extra exclusive cosmetics is a pretty crazy deal, so even if you don't like it in the long run, it's not a big investment.

Personally? I love it. I'm not quite the fastest or the best, but it's generally hard not to have a good time.

Ion actually has more viable Titan kits than most of the other Titans, which speaks to her overall versatility.

Refraction Lens (5-way split) is good if you want to improve her alpha strike damage with her RMB aim.
The improved Vortex Shield has its uses, even though it got bugfixed to avoid doing massive damage when doing splash damage off reflected hitscan weapons.
Grand Cannon is okay, but that's if you're playing around your Laser Core, in which case you'd want Overcore to help supplement it and get your more cores sooner.

Entangled Energy and Zero-Energy Tripwire both deserve special mention, because of all the Titan kits across all Titans, they are among the only ones that effectively improve the Titan's ENTIRE ARSENAL by extension.
Entangled Energy is amazing because if you've got good ain with your primary gun, you are earning back energy faster, which means you can use more abilities sooner.
Zero-Energy Tripwire is also good, because it removes your Tripwire from your energy management (it still has an internal 10s cooldown), which frees up the rest of your energy to go towards other things.
Both these options improve on Ion's overall flexibility, which is already her main charm point. It reinforces how she can do a little of everything and always has an answer for any given situation. As long as you keep your options open, Ion will do right by you.

tl;dr - Most of Ion's kits are good and worth using, but give extra consideration to Entangled Energy and Zero-Point Tripwire, as they both help with energy management.

Zero energy trips. They do almost as much as a laser shot and with that perk you just use them on cool down. I use overcore now, but use to be a double dash user. You should only use the shield as a last resort since it lowers laser shots dps. splits only good if you got no aim and need to kill a pilot asap so 5 isn't worth it to me. I never feltlike entangled really added much since the splitter rifle is. Just filler for laser shot

yep, ion is a jack of all trades. vortex amp is good but situational like you said. grand cannon is worth it if you are comfortable with 1 dash. 5 way split is massive damage up close, but drains energy FAST.
consider using the laser tripwire perk too. it allows you to put them down for zero energy, free damage basically. dooes decent damage to titans and can possibly slow an enemy titan in pursuit of you. they also catch pilots unaware all the time; the proximity is deceptively large

Splitting the rifle shots jumps up Ion's damage considerably. If you're in relatively close quarters and you know you can hit the enemy cockpit, magdumping your splitter rifle does more damage than a lot of people think. It's not just Laser Shot all day err day.

In a Pilot vs. Titan fight, you are the mosquito who annoys the shit out of the giant. Do what you can to avoid being caught out in the open or at ground level by the Titan, because you will assuredly get turned into a smooth red paste. Stay out of their vision and pepper them with your anti-Titan weapon (each behaves differently, so learn their habits) as long as you have a means to slip away. You can rodeo the enemy Titan as well, but if you don't have Low Profile equipped, that's a dangerous proposition because without it, the enemy Titan will know you're rodeoing and trying to steal his battery the moment you land on the hull, allowing him to plan accordingly.

Nah. Play ronin normal. Block, core, etc. Don't EXPECT to nuke. Its a last resort "lost the titan anyway" button. Treat it like that and its useful in that it'll sometimes net you a kill, which gives you iirc like 30% of your meter back instantly. Ronin can play perfectly fine without any other tactical, so take advantage of that. Still play smart and don't waste your titan health, but when you eventually get doomed (which you will no matter what, obviously) then use it.
