Mobile or consoles, flash or unity, freeware or early access. This place is a home for the indie game community and indie and obscure games that don't have a home. So be free to talk and share all your hidden gems, forgotten games and starving devs here.

Mindshrooms for example are bioluminescent, and yeah, I guess the ceilings could be covered in mushrooms, or something like the glowworms in New Zealand, but simple light is not enough, they'd have to produce UVB, and lots of it, in order to help with vitamin D.

For example if you spend all day in a basement, turning on the light won't help. In a less drastic example, simply not going outdoors is enough to develop vitamin D deficiency, even though it is not actually dark in your room during the day. Smog or shit weather too. For example Sweden is so fucking dark, that it's pretty fucking important to get vitamin D from other sources if you spend a longer time there. That's why they add it to milk and stuff.

And then all the UVB in the world can't help you if you don't allow it to reach your skin. You can spend all day standing in the sun in the middle of the Sahara, if you are covered from head to toe you are just as fucked. Vitamin D deficiency is kind of a pretty common issue with muslims.

Even solariums usually use UVA instead of UVB. Most full spectrum lights available today are great to treat shit like winter depression, but they can do fuck all to help with vitamin D synthesis. I don't remember the exact number, but it was something like spending an 8 hour worktime in an office with full spectrum lighting will be about as effective for vitamin D synthesis as spending 1 minute outside in the sun. So yeah.

tl;dr bioluminescent mushrooms almost certainly wouldn't help.

It is a pretty big deal. Problem is, without sunlight the only way you can get it is from food. A miner or submarine crew can get enough from food and supplements to somehow get by, but food won't have vitamin D either without sunlight. That's why I brought up deep sea fishes in the previous thread. They might be able to synthesize it without UVB, but they still need blue light. Which you won't get in deep water in a cave many miles underground.

So a station that can treat food with UV radiation, or use proper lighting can get around this problem. But not the zoners living in shantytown eating Tchort knows what in their barrel soups.

There was a guy complaining (elsewhere) about how punishing and monotonous the game is. I told him to "get good" and he got real offended".

Apparently I caught up to where he was... and it was a cake walk. Sure it would have been monotonous if I kept dying / didn't find benches... but that didn't happen.

Thanks, but I already ran into this. Unfortunately, not even the devs remember to the other condition. One said high (20) morale, but a user reported s(he) left even with 25 (!) Morale. The other dev claimed a certain level of Diplomacy, but didn't tell the exact value.

Compared to OFF the thing that most sticks out is that Hylics is still a very JRPG game in the story and structure. It gets spiced up though by some unique mechanics like enemies staying dead, havin to die to grind your meat into HP or one character getting additional HP and I think strength by eating bugs. It's about as good but it's primarily an aesthetic experience. Don't expect much of a deep story since all the text is randomly-generated gibberish.

Considering it's a console aimed for the ultramobile market it's not really surprising. Besides, Nintendo's self-developed NVN won't be the devs only option. They joined to Khronos Group in 2k15, so the odds is that Switch will support their APIs (Vulkan / OpenGL) too.

But speaking of adventure games, anyone here played Gabriel Knight 3? Is it any good? I've played the first two, and the first one was fucking amazing, while the second was surprisingly not terrible for an FMV game. But the third game's early 3D graphics look like a crime against humanity. It makes me really hesitant to give it a go.

And it works. Even crappy ambient sound samples picked up from some online audio bank for a dime are beautifully highlighted when busy music isn't grabbing your attention.

I don't begrudge the game existing but the hype around NITW and similar games makes me feel alienated.

I struggle to trust anybody who thinks "cute cartoon animals hanging out and making perfect sardonic jokes while an on-point soundtrack plays" is a good way to explore economic downturn, young-adult ennui, etc. I relate to that stuff but I don't see myself or anybody I know in their little animals. Their whole style makes a mockery of what they're supposedly writing about imo.

Sound design is an interesting and often overlooked part of game design.

Underrail alpha also had a special feel to it. No music, just ambient drones. It was amazing. The current music doesn't play as well with ambient sounds and it completely changed the overall feel of it things.

SGS had a mellow, mild tune. Really calming and relaxing. Now the music feels downright oppressive.

Old Junkyard was calm, silent, abandoned, mysterious and maybe slightly eerie. Evocative for slowly exploring your way through the depot. Now it's got an action track on.

GMS had a spoopy horror drone, but low-key enough that your hearing concentrated on the sounds effects. The whirring vents, humming and blinking lights, occasional rathound howls in the distance. Now it's got the same action track as Old Junkyard.

I don't know anything about sound design, but I'm not sure where I stand in the great ambiance versus memorable soundtrack debate.

On one hand I'd take the original DX's soundtrack over HR's ambiance any day. But then in the case of Gothic I find G1-2's darker and less noticeable soundtracks infinitely better than G3's bombastic live orchestra. Arena and Daggerfall, despite having nice soundtracks, are best experienced with music turned off and only SFX playing, and I was often wishing Morrowind would hold up just as well without the music, because it got so repetitive I eventually had to mute it. Meanwhile the BG soundtracks included a lot of very attention-grabbing tunes, but they still had very memorable background SFX, something for example PoE was not so great at.

I liked Underrail's music a lot, especially tracks like Drop Zone and Arena. But now you kinda make me regret never playing the alpha. Does the old demo use the drones? I want to see what it was like.

Okay, this is kind of funny. My knowledge on alpha history is pretty lacking, but weren't the green flavor texts added to the dialogue shorty before release? I seem to recall some players mentioning it back than at least. So does that mean there never was a time when both the calming drone and the flavor text about Tanner's calming aura were both in the game at the same time?

I really doubt it. I'm almost certain he came to DC at a later point, and he isn't actually immortal or anything like that. At least two of the three elevators were functioning for a pretty long time, maybe even all three. So it's not until like some decades ago before the Institute became the only way down, and maybe even less if the SGS elevator was functioning before the earthquake cut it off from power.

Another thing about indies and sound design is that they lack samples. Even fairly well-polished indie games have only hundreds of sound effects, whereas AAA+++ games of similar scope have at least thousands.

Yet the lack of sound sample diversity isn't really a problem on indie games, at least not for me. Really makes you think how much money is wasted on audiovisual representation on bigger game projects.

My opinion is mixed as well. Overall I think the new music brought the game's overall feel closer to what styg intended it to be, but the drones were better when considering sound design as a whole.

Does your characters intelligence level affect the regular dialogue in Underrail? Currently doing the Foundry quests and i could swear i never had such in depth discussions with Ezra and Quinton during my first playthrough.

There are occasional Intelligence dialogue checks, yeah. Often just for flavor. For example in the battery quest there are something like 5 tiers of Electronics checks you can pass, and only the highest, which takes something like 100+ Electronics, unlocks the explanation about the optoelectric batteries. Which means that most people will never see it, because at level 8-10, which is usually the level most people finish Junkyard and get access to the quest, your skill simply can't be high enough to pass it unless you max Intelligence at every opportunity and Junkyard surprise scum. And since you get only one shot at passing this check, the only real way to do it is to wait with taking the quest.

Well, but in this case the new lines for the Beast quest were added with the first experimental patch.

Sure why not. The only thing you need to keep in mind is that for the sake of BALANCE, the same modal will only give the bonus once. So make sure that you take different modals for your paladins.

If I remember correctly only story companions can be sacrificed to the Blood Pool for the stat bonus, but otherwise I don't think so. But I don't remember if you can do scripted interaction skill checks with adventurers. If you want I could load up a save and check.

The problem with indie games and sound is that indies are really lazy and don't want to bother how to use fl studio or hell even audacity to edit their sounds. On top of that they're given tools by other equally lazy devs to make terrible samey sounding samples.

Everytime I hear an unedited sfx-r sound I want to tear my ears off. Sfx-r is a good starting point so you can get a base sample to edit but people just plop it in their game and it's so harsh and hard to listen to

I'm just glad it seems like we are moving past the "LE RETRO NES GRAPHIX" phase. We are seeing more RETRO at the level of SNES graphics, (stardew valley) And I am okay with this.
