Alright, I got through the Defiled chalice. Now all I have left (on this character at least, but my arcane character is stronger in general and I'm not planning on doing this on my Str character) are the 3 depth 5 chalices. Hopefully they're not TOO much of a step up from the defiled chalice, because I'd really like to get this over with so I can beat Gehrman.

Holy fuck did I fall for some kind of meme with my Str/Arc build? Just started a new character, currently BL75, with 30/30 Skl/Blt. Viscerals deal upwards of 1000 damage, the Evelyn actually deals respectable damage and I just shredded Logarius like it was nothing when he was the boss I struggled against the most with my previous character.

BL? You should be around BL60, and have a weapon at at least +6, with at least a couple 10% gems in it.

Not getting hit is easy enough, but less damage output means a longer fight meas more opportunities to make mistakes and get hit.
>>
>>169305746
Look up YouTube videos on how to open the shortcuts in the area.
Don't try to clear the entire area, rush through.
Rush either to one of the bosses or until you find some Madman's Knowledge. Encountering bosses, killing bosses and using Madman's Knowledge gets you Insight. You need at least 1 Insight to be able to level up. Once you can, overlevel yourself.

That's how I did it, anyway.
>>
>>169306508
A simple +6 Saw Spear and a +7 Evelyn. They just tear through everything. Now I got a Chicago, we'll see how well that works.
>>
>>169292730
she just has a larger health pool, if you do the whole fight only hitting the head you will get at least 2 staggers
>>
>>169307521

>>
would you guys agree that defiled amy is the hardest boss in the game? disregarding the jump cheese, it has the longest range of any boss and can kill you in one hit almost guarunteed. sure the crf amys have more hp, but when fighting crf amy you are going to have top tier chalice gems already, whereas before defiled amy the best you can have are 21%ers.
>>
>>169308406
It's still ez without jump cheesing. Just wait for the head to lower and attack it. Or go for the arms.

That's all right in the median. You should focus on getting hit less, or doing some chalice dungeons and getting better Fire gems (you can get 16% in Lower Pthumeru).

The DLC's not going to get any easier, so if you can't beat Ludwig now there's not a lot of point in forcing it, unless you just want the HMLS.
>>
>>169308137
Yeah, I figured. Wasn't that hard to get it to stagger twice when I started stabbing it.
>>
>>169309025
Read the guide in the OP
>>
>>169308406
The boss of literally the layer before it is harder, it's not that hard to not get hit before it tears it's arms off and after it does even without the jump cheese BMA pistol shots to the head will enable a stagger or even finish it off
>>
>>169308406
Just get a weapon with many vertical attacks like the tricked saw cleaver and beat Amy's arms. I beat her with a +6 Cleaver with bad gems after I couldn't do it with a +10 pizza cutter. You can also easily see when she will drop her head and give her a few attacks then.

I don't understand the coop hate by a lot of the playerbase. It's one of the most enjoyable aspects of the game for me. You know there's no review board that is judging your video game skills, and it doesn't matter how you play any game as long as you have fun, right?
>>
>>169312551
Boring weapon, attracts shitters like the Drake Sword/Dark Sword in Dark Souls 1/3.
>>
>>169313159
The player base doesn't hate co-op. They hate people that get carried all the way through the game and never even try to beat a boss on their own.
>>
>>169312551
40% of randoms use it, so it's considered a shitter weapon along with the Hunter Axe, but don't mind it all. Feel free to use whatever you want to use, whatever is the most fun to you.
>>
>>169312551
>>169313965
/v/-tier idiots dislike it because it is popular. No more, no less.
>>
>>169313159
Personally I hate coop because I don't want to pay 25 bucks a month for Playstation Plus for the slight chance of finding a coop partner among the seventeen people who still play the game regularly and actually use their Bells.

So I claw my way through this game, only being able to get support when the game decides to set up a summon point.

Is it harder? Fuck yes. Is it infinitely more satisfying? Fucking hell, YES.
>>
>>169314454
And NPC summons exist. Most of the time they're just meat shields, but Valtr can easily turn the tide
>>
>>169313263
Ah, aright. Yeah my first DaS run was pretty regrettable because I just stuck to the drake sword. Weapons like that just blind people to trying others.
>>
>>169314681
Since LHB scales evenly with Str and Skl, it makes it incredibly viable, increasing the likelihood a newer player is going to use it. I use it during scholar, Edgar-like runs because of the A scaling in Arc (and Edgar uses it), but it feels bland
>>
>>169314528
as I said, when the game decides to give them to you. There is no NPC summon in the fishing hamlet, for example and against Logarius you're also on your own.

They do help out a ton against the Shadows of Yharnam and Rom, I'll readily admit that.
>>
>>169314681
Yeah that's pretty much one of the biggest cons with LHB. For new players it's easy to develop bad habits with that weapon.
>>
>>169314998
Henryk and Madaras make the Shadows a little more fair, since they can usually kill one between the two of them (though I don't know what Madaras is trying to accomplish with that Fire Paper), and Antal is surprisingly useful against Paarl and Reborn. Yamamura is okay for taking heat away from the Failures, and Queen Killer can be a little helpful against the Queen (as his name suggests), but most of the rest are trash. It's definitely for the best that they aren't available for every fight, it was possible to go through DaS2 having NPC summons kill every boss except Dragonrider but he doesn't really count since he could be tricked off a cliff
>>
>>169315354
I also found the Mensis Scholar you can summon before Ebrietas to be pretty good. I mean, he just stands in front of her, shooting her with the Blacksky Eye and tanking her Call Beyond on his Loch Shield while you can safely stand behind her and stab her to death.
>>
>>169315354
Scholar made it even easier with the addition of new(competent) summons
You could summon a mage for Riderx2 that makes the cakewalk even easier, and Benhart "lemme stand here and tank LGK even though i cant" was complemented by ya boy boyd, the man with a million defence and HP

Also dragonrider has Glencour, one of the best summons in the game
>>
>>169308406
No because I just BMA cheesed it. It and magic a
just demolish it.
>>
>>169315693
Damian against Ebrietas is worthwhile, but the summons as a collective whole can't really figure out to not hit the small Roms from the front.
>>169315718
Boyd was capable of killing Freja solo, I have nothing but admiration for the guy. Glencour is another favorite, he's just that good. However, some of the other summons like Benhart and Felicia were brave to the point of stupid, and usually got themselves killed, and Lucatiel couldn't heal. The problem with the first Dragonrider was being able to have him run off the edge.
We should drop the DaS2 now before a certain someone decides to spend the next hour or so saying why it's the worst thing ever made. And we probably need to turn back to BB-related conversation
>>
>>169316102
Good point, meanwhile i find that most of the chalice summons are next to useless since they'll tank hits like no tomorrow and only heal at the last second.
Notable exception has been the tomb prospector vs Rom, he managed to keep most of the adds busy while i fought the big cheese.
>>
>>169316385
Olek hasn't been the brightest in my experience. He threw a Molotov at a hotdog. While he does serve as a good distraction against the little Roms, the boosted health doesn't really argue his case
>>
>>169308406
Have you ever fought a FRC Darkbeast
>>
>>169314528
Valtr is a damn badass, he's the only summon who's inarguably great.
I dunno what his deal is with eating beasts, but no harm no foul
>>
>>169316385
I actually got stuck in the corner when I tried summoning that blue guy for amygdala, had to squeeze my way out

Then it turned out the summons suck for that fight so I soloed it anyway
>>
>>169319320
I personally think he ate beasts out of revenge for the one that killed his fellow constables. It became his shtick, he would walk by and people would think, "There goes Valtr, guy ate a beast once. A whole beast. Just sat down and ate the fucker."
With a guy like that in charge, I wouldn't be surprised if the League had people piling up outside the door to sign up after the story got around

I'm playing through the game for the second time, first since a little after release. It's a lot more comfy than I remember it being. I'm running a SKL with some points in STR (since it feels like putting points into SKL past 30 is a bit of a waste) but it's kind of... boring. All I do is hit things. The Saw Spear is also super boring. I guess STR has more interesting weapons.

I'm finding all these different ARC items that I could be using. I have 15 so I can use a few, but when I find legitimately interesting looking ones I need more ARC. Is it worth putting more points into it just to use them at base value? Or should I just make a new character for an ARC build?
>>
>>169321484
>since it feels like putting points into SKL past 30 is a bit of a waste
What? You're a SKL build. Going past 30, all the way to 50 is anything but a waste.
>>
>>169321484
Some people go up to 18 for Augur parries, but Arc tools at base value aren't all that great. It would require a more specialized build, but one which is incredibly rewarding later
>>
>>169321076
>look it up
>it's on the store but not on the ps4's store
Why? If I wanna buy something on my PS4, I'm gonna be looking for it on the PS4. Fuckin dumb
>>
>>169321635

I really just started out going with SKL because my first playthrough was exclusively the Hunter's Axe, and wanted something different. The BoM are cool as shit too. I guess you're right, though, I misremembered that 30 wasn't the softcap for it.

>>169321701

I'll make a new build next playthrough then. I'm mostly just doing PvE, I don't want to pay for PSN+. It's a really fun game and I haven't even bought the DLC yet. I have 15 for the OHB/Beast Roar (still haven't used that) and the EPS is really nice for a cheap buff.
>>
>>169321842
Buy the DLC now, it boosts Arc build significantly. Don't go past 15 Arc with your current build, though
>>
>>169321995
15 is stupid. 18 or nothing.
>>
>>169321995

Because of the weapons and the like? I was going to buy it and go through it before I go on to NG+, if I do.
>>
>>169322089
The weapons and garb are excellent, a new Arc tool is added, two new covenants, and the bosses are some of the best.
>>169322071
And why would that be, o wise one? 18 Arc is only for Augur parries, and with some weapons a gun is always available for it. Those three points can be better spent elsewhere

Visuals, I won't argue. Wasting three points for a tool at base damage for the possibility of parrying, I will argue. I firmly think that Arc tools shouldn't be used at base damage, they should be used in Arc builds. You wouldn't go up to 18 Blt just to use the Madaras Whistle and Evelyn at base damage, would you?

Giving up those three points is a waste if it can only open up an otherwise unused tool where the same means can be accomplished with a gun. Parries aren't essential to success, they just make it easier. The stun can be accomplished the usage of any gun. I just can't buy it.
>>169323832
3 points where we're supposed to keep it at the precious 98? I've found it worthwhile to stay at 15, especially with the Beast Roar. Going over is just getting access to something I don't feel I need.

A. No one's forcing you to go to 18 Arc. I don't give a fuck what you do with your Arc and no one else does. You're obnoxious as fuck and you should go fuck yourself.

B. Fitting 18 Arc into the 98 meta isn't extremely difficult, and has been agonizing memed over the last few weeks, fewer and fewer people stick to the meta, anyway.

>for three points I rather have an extra option like that rather than just getting 15 AR on a weapon at which point the damage increase is so minimal you'll still be killing people with the same amount of hits so it's essentially wasted.
Okay, this is actually a good argument. And gems really nullify it otherwise

As odd as this may sound, you and a few other anons convinced me. 18 Arc is easily done now that I've taken a look at mugenmonkey again. The Roar has save me more than once from spiders, but the Augur was always helpful back when I used it.
Since the only hunter I have actively going right now is decently low-leveled, it won't take any adjustment to convert to 18 Arc (and I'd imagine Yahar'gul hunters would be trained in Arc usage, being run by Mensis), and tune any future ones to the same degree
>>
This ""discussion"" reminds me that in all my time with the game I have never seen any evidence whatsoever that Beast Roar is in the most liberal meaning of the word at all useful.

Does anyone have video evidence of BR not being completely ineffectual?

Panic button when you get crowded, especially by spiders. If you like to speed run to levers then it's pretty useful. Also to stunlock hunters/Keeper into a corner, r1 spam then BR when stam is done.

The game has weird waves of activity. About a week or so back I had literal minute to minute SRRC co-op, then it slowed down a bit, now it's iffy whenever I'm on. In all fairness, it is a niche exclusive, but it's also a modern From RPG, those just don't die.

It's not that bad but if you go in expecting Bloodborne 2 you'll be disappointed

All the enemies are more single-mindedly aggressive (more chasing/attacking, less 'staring at you stupidly') but lack varied movesets- and their most dangerous attack is usually the 'sudden retard flailing that takes you by surprise and kills you'. Then they make up for that by having fucking huge HP pools and being able to kill you like you're in a cursed dungeon.

So what tends to happen is you learn some safe move and use it 10 times to kill one enemy, then you repeat this.

Now, the gear system and skill/item is pretty in-depth and levels matter. So if you're looking more for an RPG/Diablo experience where you can find 'combos' that let you roflstomp enemies it's good for that, and weapon movesets are actually really cool- lots of combos, and flashy skills.

But the enemies don't have that visceral reality to them like in BB. You feel like you're grinding down an HP bar with your chosen flashy cool moves and RPG stats, not 'fighting' if that makes sense

I was also here earlier asking about SKL and ARC.

>>
wow so I just found out the reason why I always die to stupid faggot pthumerian elder's three hit combo

the game queues up your next dodge like ONE FULL SECOND before you are actually able to do it, then forces you to do it once you are done flinching. So like my failed attempt to dodge the second hit is queued as another dodge that is to immediately happen as soon as I'm done flinching - and this goes *perfectly* with the timing of his third hit which kills me
>>
>>169334836

no I mean elder, when he does the quick stab with the lance, then the slightly delayed slash with the scythe, then the really delayed smash with the mace. I can see the mace coming and I know when to dodge it but the game automatically makes me dodge the second I *finally* stop flinching from the second hit because it's still queued up my late failed-dodge of that hit, which makes me dodge early and get counter-hit by the mace

Depends on the weapon and what you're killing. Stam is best if you want to use your weapon for everything. Dura is good for Parasite, guns and Bowblade Arrows. Best is kin down; there are hardly any kin enemies and only one hard kin boss (Ebriatas) so who fucking cares.

The stamina UP curse is overrated. It is multiplicative so you end up using a lot more stamina when you have multiple stamina curse gems.

Durability down is alright but its annoying to have on a general purpose weapon that you use a lot, unless that weapon has a ton of durability by default.

Beast down is not that bad if you have a bunch of specialized weapons.

HP drain is pretty terrible, but it is manageable if you get it on a korean gem because you can use a +5 pulsing gem on your gun to negate more than half the curse.

Attack down means the gem is a dud.

Would Beast/Ayylmao require NG+ to do? Since you'd need to have the right shit for it and they come rather late.

I'm not suggesting builds as much themes for the hunter to find a way to incorporate a build or specific weapons that work for that getup. Is having fun in this way a crime?

As a life long Lovecraft nerd, this makes me happy.

If you want some more stuff that feels like it influenced Bloodborne (or just some good fukken stories) try:
>From Beyond
>Dagon
>The Picture in the House
>The Shadow Over Innsmouth
>The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath (a straight up fantasy story with a ton of really cool imagery, but it's literally a first draft, so it can be a challenging read as it also has no chapter breaks and the sheer amount of weird shit can be a little overwhelming after a while, but this story is basically where the concept of the Nightmare comes from)
>also just read The Call of Cthulhu because it's fantastic

How are these kinds of stones formed? Apparently the Doors of Pharos as based off a place in Scotland called the Cave of Melody, so what needs to happen to get those kinds of formations?

Thanks for the recommendations m8, will make note of those.
I feel like some of his works are a bit difficult to get into just because of how verbose and slow-building everything is, but I just sorta eased into things with The Tomb and got MoM from my library, and I'm having a good time of it. Shit pulls you in if you're just having a slow day and sit down with it.

>Thanks for the recommendations m8, will make note of those.

Glad to be of service! The first three are quite short reads, From Beyond in particular is a very snappy read, no wasted time, right to the point. I'm surprised you're liking Mountains so much, a lot of people find the beginning very slow, but it's also comfy, I think. And The Tomb, you might be interested to know, was his first proper story, he wrote a bunch as a kid and teenager, but The Tomb, from 1917, was his first 'adult' story in a career of writing that lasted til his death in 1937. After that is Dagon, and you can pretty much sum up every single theme and concept that would later appear from those two stories alone.

I'd like to recommend a few more, I forgot:
>The Nameless City (man goes spelunking in Loran chalice)
>The Colour out of Space (my favourite, genuinely unsettling story)
>The Music of Erich Zann
>The Haunter of the Dark (his last solo story, his true last story is The Night Ocean, a very moody story written with a promising collaborator, R.H. Barlow)

He has a few stinkers (The Horror at Red Hook, which while also being unimaginably racist is just sort of a dude), and some weirder philosophical stuff (The Silver Key and Through the Gates of the Silver Key). Honestly, you're in for a treat even if you just go by what I've given here. Everything is free and legal to read on hplovecraft.com anyway, so go nuts.

I got really into Lovecraft around October (I had read a few of his stories such as Innsmouth and really liked them but got busy) and I got up until Pickman's Model before taking a break

I then got Bloodborne in December and have been nonstop playing it since, I loooove all the eldritch shit and fantasy-horror so much
Bloodborne has made me appreciate the cosmic horror stuff a lot more too as I used to not like it nearly as much as his deep sea sorta stuff

Unfortunately between the two I've developed a fear for unseen-yet-enormous stuff like Dagon and Amygdalas (though at the same time they interest me so much I wrote a novice Lovecraft tribute story)
Living in Massachusetts makes Lovecraft tons of fun too

>I'm sure this has been discussed to death before, but what the FUCK happens after you Wake Up?

You're disconnectd from the dream, if you die you die for real, but you get to keep you superhuman strength and agility that you obtained by channeling blood echoes into strength by the doll. You also get too keep all your weapons and cool shit that you gathered throughout your journey.

>Is Yharnam fucked for the last time?

Yep, Chapel Dweller says everyone you didn't send to the Cathedral Ward turned into a beast, went mad or is dead. The whole population is gone, including all of Yharnam's big organizations since you killed the Healing Church's current leader (Amelia), the last Choir scholar (Yurie, the choir girl at Byrgenwerth), Mensis got sucked into the nightmare and you killed the last semi-sane person in it (Micolash).

>Does your character just forget everything and get the fuck out, or are they like the other hunters where they're stuck for one reason or another?

You escape the dream thanks to Gherman granting you mercy and cutting you off from the dream. You will most likely forget everything that happened while you were part of the hunter's dream, but people like Eileen and Djura demonstrate you can somehow retain the memories or maybe get them back after "waking up." However, since you are a hunter, you will go to the nightmare once you die (Unless you killed Orphan and returned him to the ocean, ending the hunter's curse).

>WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU WAKE UP IN AYYLMAO MODE?

You are stuck as a broccoli forever, since the only way to go back to being a human is by using the Caryl Rune tool to remove the Milkweed rune from your mind and the tool is now stuck in the Hunter's dream.
>>
>Meet Gehrman for the first time

>first time playing this, think he's either hiding something from me, or just trying to avoid explaining what would be too complex of a situation to take in all at once and avoid confusion
>just now realized that he's telling you this to try and stop you from going mad from insight
I dunno if I'm dense or what for just realizing this two years later.
>>
>>169358660
>You will most likely forget everything that happened while you were part of the hunter's dream
You don't, every hunter remembers what happened when they were bound to the dream. Even the doll tells you that she hopes you will have good memories of the dream, obviously implying that you won't forget anything.
>>
>>169358960
Yeah but Gherman straight up says you will forget everything that happened while you were part of the dream, so there is obviously some contradiction there: some people remember and others don't. Also, Micolash says he's afraid he will forget everything that happened while he was in the nightmare, since he thinks he's actually waking up after you kill him probably because he doesn't know his body in Yharnam is dead, so it is more likely that people forget the dream when they wake up more often than not.
>>
>>169359125
>Yeah but Gherman straight up says you will forget everything that happened
It was a figure of speech.
Micolash says "I'll forget everything" because unlike you he's dead in the waking world, so he can only keep his knowledge by staying in the Nightmare of Mensis.
>>
>>169359176
>it was a figure of spech

It's up for interpretation. I guess we're gonna have to agree to disagree because it could be that either everyone forgets the dream or people happen to use the same figure of speech to refer to the dream.
>>
>>169359489
Only Gehrman says it as a figure of speech, meaning "to leave the dream behind". Micolash meant it in a literal way because he's a corpse in the waking world.
>>
>>169359125
My theory is that, like the Hunter's Nightmare, the Yharnam which the player explores throughout the game is actually a parallel Nightmare Yharnam, and the Hunter's Dream is a dream within that Dream. The other Hunters you meet are still within Nightmare Yharnam and while they can no longer reach the Hunter's Dream, they remember it because they haven't died/woken up.

Micolash forgets because dies/ wakes up, and so will the Good Hunter.

Alternatively, the Yharnam we explore is the real Yharnam, and the Dream is the only 'level' of alternate reality the Good Hunter and others experienced. They remember it only because while they woke up, they hadn't died, but merely reawoken and found themselves unable to return. Gehrman literally kills you in the Dream.
>>
>>169359625
>My theory is that, like the Hunter's Nightmare, the Yharnam which the player explores throughout the game is actually a parallel Nightmare Yharnam, and the Hunter's Dream is a dream within that Dream
What makes you think that?
>>
>>169359608
Or both are refering to thw fact people tend to forget their experience s after they leave the dream plane. Both interpretations work so only Miyazaki knows I guess.
>>
>>169359762
"I'll forget everything" isn't really a figure of speech though.
>>
>>169359734
Well presumably everything was fine and on the up-and-up on the Good Hunter's way into Yharnam/ the hospital in which they receive their first transfusion. It's only after the hallucination and reawakening that everything's gone to shit.

That's either some crazy coincidence, or the Good Hunter never actually woke up.
>>
How the hell do you dodge Ebrietas's flying body slam? I can avoid pretty much everything, but even running to the side as early as possible doesn't do anything to stop the one hit kill.
>>
>>169359825

>>
>>169359865
>presumably everything was fine and on the up-and-up on the Good Hunter's way into Yharnam
Because the moon only affects Yharnam, or more specifically certain parts of Yharnam.
>>
>>169359941
No, because, "you'll wake up, forget the dream,..." and "I'll forget everything" are completely different phrases.
The second one can't be used figuratively unless you mean it as a project, and Micolash obviously doesn't want to forget what he knows about nightmares etc.

I don't believe that the Good Hunter not only got into Yharnam on the night of the Hunt, but was also the first Hunter able to break the curse in the Hamlet, stop the ritual, and defeat all the big bads, by pure chance.

My theory is that anyone who traveled to Yharnam to receive blood was snagged by Gherman and the Doll into an alternate Nightmare Yharnam, where they had to attempt to prevent real Yharnam's current present from ever happening.

It's sort of like how anyone who died in Boletaria was snagged by the Monumental and bound to Nexus.

Of course, that Boletaria was real and all the events were happening in real time in the real world...

>>169360579
Not him but just a reminder that "Micolash, HOST of the nightmare" is a mistranslation from "Micolash, LEADER of the nightmare."

The idea that the dream/nightmare plains were created by a specific Great One and need a Host to exist is, while a valid interpretation, unconfirmed headcannon since:

All the nightmare areas are connected, and existed before there could be any "host." There's also the fact that all the dream areas keep existing even after you kill their supposed hosts and the Great Ones connected to it.

Soulsborne virgin here. I picked up Bloodborne complete edition from the sale last week, and I'm (surprisingly) enjoying it so far. I never thought I'd actually like a Souls game, but I was really bored and felt kind of obligated to try the "bloodborne machine"s titular game.

I just beat the Witch of Hemwick which was the most interesting boss so far imo. It was surprisingly refreshing to have the "hiding" and "mook" mechanics without it being totally scripted. In any other game, you'd be forced to fight the minions while the witch fucks off into literal nonexistence, but in BB the optimal strategy is actually to ignore the mooks altogether.

My question is: how far am I? In some ways it feels like I've been playing for a while already, but I know it's really mainly because everything is novel and I'm messing up a lot as a noob. Also, plebbit says investing in bloodtinge and arcane is useless for a starter character, is this true?

Also is Blade of Mercy any good? It seems like most enemies so far favor heavy weapons.

Orphan of Kos does, the "Nightmare Slain" message appears when you kill him. The nightmares are created by Great Ones and shaped by their hosts.

The OP would answer any questions you may have. If you killed the Witch during the daytime, head to the Grand Cathedral. If you killed her at night, head to the Woods. This may seem counterproductive, but do pic related if you haven't already.
Plebbit is full of more shit than we are, Blt and Arc can be highly effective if done correctly. You would just need to warm up into it. As for BoM, it's hit or miss; PvE and against inexperienced players, it's viable, but trash against players who know how to counter it.

???

You mean the black ghost that appears after you kill Orphan? That's orphan's apparition.
>>
>>169361005
BoM is pure Skill, fun weapon but only use it if you plan on getting 50 Skill. Blt and Arc aren't recommended for beginners since they can be confusing and difficult to build while blind. Bloodtinge is mainly for guns and very few right-hand weapons, very powerful but you'll need to know how to build it. Arcane can use any pure physical weapon and convert it to pure fire/bolt/arcane with gems to scale with the stat. There's also spells that scale with Arcane called Hunter Tools. The main game doesn't have a lot of decent gems for Arc builds so it's more difficult than a standard Phys build (Str/Skl).

Doesn't matter, the principle is the same.
A Great One creates it, a human being shapes it.
>All the nightmare areas are connected
True.
>and existed before there could be any "host."
False. The nightmare world did, the individual nightmares didn't. And even if they did, they were still shaped by the human hosts or whatever you want to call them.
>There's also the fact that all the dream areas keep existing even after you kill their supposed hosts and the Great Ones connected to it
That's because they're material places. A house doesn't disappear if the people who built it die.

Saws are pretty broken for PvE (and PvP). Serration, fast moveset, god-tier r1, l1, l1, etc stun locks most enemies with high modifiers and rally. Axe is slower and not serrated but has better reach and the trick charge r2 is one of the best moves. It's no surprise why shitters spam it, they'll hyperarmor through most attacks while gaining health back.

>Frontier and Mensis are actually in the same plane of existence

All the nightmare areas are in the same plane of existance, but according to you each area had a specific host and great one to create the landscape. So which great one and which host lead to Frontier being made?

>>169361652
Orphan of Kos. "Nightmare Slain" appears when you kill him.
>Nightmare Frontier

But Orphan of Kos is the Great One that created the fishing hamlet nightmare area (according to this theory), not the Hunter's nightmare (the part that looks like Yharnam). So who's the host and who's the great one that created HUNTER'S NIGHTMARE?

>Nightmare Frontier is just nightmare wilderness, that's why it's not shaped after any place in the waking world.

You can see man-made poles and tombstones around Nightmare Frontier, and the tower in Amygdala's boss arena is clearly man-made, as it has statues of Amygdala itself, like the ones you find in Cathedral Ward. If anything, Amygdala is Frontier's Great One, so who's the host of nightmare frontier?
>>
>>169360267
Just imagine different hunter factions coming in to the dream.
>Powderkeg Hunter that made brief-but-frequent visits when he blew up himself along with his targets
>Crowfeather Hunter that treated the dream like the batcave
>Mensis Dropout that had a little too much interest in space slug magic
>Choir Member that had WAY too much interest in space slug magic
Really this is just me wanting more Bloodborn content but it'd be nice
>>
>>169362156
>So who's the host and who's the great one that created HUNTER'S NIGHTMARE?
Orphan of Kos. Fishing Hamlet is part of the Hunter's Nightmare.
>You can see man-made poles and tombstones
Some of the monoliths are split open, and as you can see they're organic. Clearly not man-made.
>and the tower in Amygdala's boss arena is clearly man-made
Arguable, it looks nothing like real world architecture.

>>169362240
I know this is a stupd idea gameplay wise, but I would love it from a lore perspective if:

>you returned to the Hunter's Dream everytime you died since that's what's supposed to happen but the game only does it once to show you the dream and because it would be annoying.

>If you died while in the hunter's dream (like if you killed yourself with bloodletter or Chikage) you wake up in yharnam because dying in the dream is what liberates you

>lossing to Gherman kicked you into the Yharnam sunrise ending

>dying in the nightmare areas kicked you into a bad ending where you are eternally trapped in the nightmare

Gascoigne, Cleric Beast, Blood Starved Beast, Amelia, Witch of Hemwick. I think.

I'm not sure? What are the normal triggering conditions? The only unusual thing I did was jumping down the church workshop tower to get into the Grand Cathedral without having to spend the 10k echoes(although I died and lost like 20k dropping down those goddamn planks anyway).

>>169361297
>This may seem counterproductive, but do pic related if you haven't
Actually did already. It wasn't really intentional, but those fuckers hit hard and have weird timings so yeah. But I don't really see the point as the place they take you is just filled with more of them which I'd rather not tangle with right now?

>Blt and Arc can be highly effective if done correctly. You would just need to warm up into it.
That's kind of what they say, but I think their stance is basically to "err on the side of caution" and stick with a more straightforward Strength/Skill build when just starting out.

>As for BoM, it's hit or miss; PvE and against inexperienced players, it's viable, but trash against players who know how to counter it.
What's the counter? Like I said my surface impression is that the increased speed isn't really worth the decrease in damage and range. Most enemies I've encountered so far are pretty slow. But theoretically it seems like it'd be a decent PvP weapon to me?

>>

>>169362770
They're not part of each other, they just exist in the same dimension.
You can see the Fishing Hamlet from the Nightmare Frontier, but you can't reach it because it's a separate place.
You can walk from the Hunter's Nightmare to the Fishing Hamlet though, and if that's not enough for you the connection is reinforced by the fact that when you kill Orphan the scenery in the Hunter's Nightmare and Research Hall changes drastically.
>>
>>169362770

I think as a concept killing any boss enemy is a Nightmare area gives you "Nightmare Slain" as a generic "boss killed" message since you're in an alternate dimension where you're not hunting enemies of Yharnam so you'd get a "prey slaughtered". Going into the Nightmare dimension is its own thing and killing significant enemies there is something above and beyond merely slaughtering prey.
>>
>>169362156
>but according to you
Woah, woah, no.

According to me, Nightmare Frontier, Mensis, and Hunter's Nightmare share space because they just do. Whether it's because Kos, Nightmares just happen to be in that space, or some other reason, I have no idea.

As far as I'm concerned, the Nightmare is a parallel world/alternate dimension, something, and all of the Nightmares that are relevant to the game, and theoretically many many more, just happen to occupy it.

After that, their relevant space is formed by the consciousness(es) of those who pushed to reach that plane. The Nightmare Frontier is "undeveloped" Nightmare "landscape" that happens to be guarded by an Amygdala on the way to the memory of Mensis, formed by Micolash and all of his disciples/students who were sacrificed or otherwise died in the process, leaving Micolash in that region of the Nightmare given Mensis' form, where he could read an converse with the captured Mensis Brain.
I'd guess the Lecture Building is somewhere in the Nightmare too. And then lastly the region of the Nightmare given the form of the Hamlet is caused by the memories and anguish of Kos, its Orphan, and everyone else involved in what happened there.
>>
>>169362778

>And then lastly the region of the Nightmare given the form of the Hamlet is caused by the memories and anguish of Kos, its Orphan, and everyone else involved in what happened there.
Happened there in the real world*, of course.

Mensis might also have been a real place beyond the player-explorable regions of Yharnam, but I kind of wonder if maybe it wasn't actually "built" inside the Nightmare.

They've been in there for a very, very long time. Nothing ever changes, they never speak to each other and since it's a fantasy dream world, they probably don't even need to get up to eat or shit. The only thing to do in there is sleep, which they do often. On top of that, they know that a horrifying alien is watching them and preventing them from leaving, while also pulling innocent hunters into loops of death and rebirth.
One thing that is at least something interesting is the hunter passing through, but they've seen countless hunters do exactly the same thing, and likely have become desensitised to what their doing. The Doll especially, who is solely as a level up tool for hunters who eventually leave or go insane without really anything changing (unless you kill Maria/Bring her the hair ornament).

When Laurence Beckoned the moon a deal was probably somehow made, trapping Gherman there. Moon Prescence probably created the Hunter's Dream in the image of the Abandoned Old Workshop where Gherman started the Hunter's workshop because Gherman had a lot of fond memories there (Maria's grave being there along with her hair pin and the real-world doll that HE made). You find a Great One umbilical cord in that workshop which was used to beckon Moon Precense, so that being the place could have something to do with it.

Ludwig
Orphan
Laurence

wow that was embarrassing

I just helped a random host beat NG+ Laurence or something (he did crazy damage and took forever to kill, I had like 3 potions and no bullets left by the end) and I was sure he was doing his death animation because his health bar was empty and the host just hit him, but it was just a flinch animation or maybe a windup even. So I start doing the hunters rally and Laurence kills me with one final swipe before the host kills him. Shame

got any specialized weapons?

I have a second HMLS (normal) that has leftover nourishing gems at +21.5% (w/ HP drain) and +19.3% ATK UP, and then has a +26.7% beasthunter gem in the third slot. It destroys nearly all beast bosses (except for H/BLB and Paarl because they are hard to hit with the blade + beam).

For some reason the weapon does less damage to beasts if I make it just one 21.5% ATK UP gem and two 26.7% beasthunter gems.

No but I've been wondering how useful are poison gems? I've been tempted to get some slow/rapid poison on the blades of mercy and see if I can just poison things to death.
>>
>>169382930
They are pretty useless. You can only really inflict it with the tricked wheel because it hits with the poison multiple times per attack. You can inflict slow poison much easier and more safely with poison knives. And the damage on successful rapid-poison buildup is pathetic; like 250 damage plus 3% of their max health. You could do more damage than that with an R1 attack if you had your weapon gemmed normally

>>
>>169383879
When you spawn in the very first area, make sure to read all the notes around there. They are developer tutorial notes that will tell you the controls and about parrying and stuff.
>>
>>169384031
Nice, Thanks bro, glad you point that out
>>
>>169383879
i'd reccomend starting with the saw cleaver, but any weapon can be viable. just pick what you like the look and feel of.
Learn how gun parrying and rally work early on

When you take damage a part of your health bar will turn orange, if you hit an enemy while its orange you can het some of that lost health back. after a short time the orange bar will run back and the hp will be lost.

As for gun parrying, try and time a gunshot just before an enemy's attack would hit, there's a specific soundbit that'll inform you if you've been succesfull. just quickly walk up to them while they're down and press R1.

Most importantly, have fun.
>>
>>169383621
All weapons are viable, read weapon and item descriptions, don't level bloodtinge on your first walkthrough, armor stats don't matter – only fashion.
>>
>>169384126
Yeah i heard parrying is kinda crucial in the bloodbrone, so might thinkin geting used to it for the first time
>>169384130

>>
>>169384581
katana only guy, fire katana guy, tonitrus guy
>>
>>169384581
this:>>169384657

It's so tempting to kill the fireball one first because he is annoying as fuck, but you just end up fighting all three of them at once and getting ganked. Use the tombstone to block the fireballs and back up vs the two katana guys so you can fight them one at a time. Katana-only guy is always in the front because the other guy is always blowing flames, so he naturally dies first.
>>
>>169383621
have you played a dark souls game before?
>>
>>169383621
When people say Git Gud they mean exactly that. There aren't any really unfair fights, just a lack of ability and understanding of the elements of the fight. WATCH YOUR FUCKING OPPONENT AND HOW THEY ATTACK, THEN USE THAT TO YOUR ADVANTAGE.
Don't get stuck using the Holy Blade the entire game.
Chalice Dungeons are something you should check out as early as possible; not only do they have treasures and special variants of weapons, they're usually good ways of grinding blood later.

And most importantly: GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE GENERAL AND PLAY BLIND ON YOUR FIRST RUN. HALF OF THIS GAME IS EXPLORATION OF THE UNKNOWN, WHY WOULD YOU COME TO A GENERAL BEFORE EVEN PLAYING IT?

There's more to it than just insight.
Gehrman knows what happened in Old Yharnam and how, if you think too hard about what happened there, you might end up like Djura, which is bad for Gehrman since he wants you to kill beasts, not protect them.
Gehrman knows that, should you choose to submit your life, you'll end up like Eileen and Djura, no longer dreaming but still stuck in Yharnam, so you shouldn't think too hard about it, just do your job and then off yourself.

If you're careful, maybe, depends how bad the curse is, but I'd have a back up in case of hitting off walls and stuff. You can always make a quick trip back to the dream once you open the huge shortcut.
>>
>>169398415
If you're gonna cheese the crow just lure him down the stairs and throw Poison Knives. He won't attack while he backs up so you can shoot shit at him or get some free hits in.
>>
>>169398415
He'll stop using it after a point, it's not a reliable source of damage, and what's more, he will heal himself, but only once.

Alternatively, he can't leave the cathedral, so bait him down the steps and stand outside and hit him with ranged attacks and poison knives. I think it takes two knives to proc. When he starts to retreat back in, just bait him out again.

I just created a dungeon that has a third layer a lot like like kkvk (the main ithyll one people use to farm for cold abyssals). There's a roaming descendant guarding both the path to the lever (from one of those massive outdoor areas) and another one in the bonus area before that layer's lamp.

I tried beckoning randoms for the first time ever, and was surprised by their skills. They cleared out hemwick witches and pthumerian descendants with me like nothing. Then the boss was Pthumerian Elder, who we easily ganked. Hopefully one of them got a cold abyssal from him, because I just got a cold damp gem with ATK DOWN. Then there is a layer 4 with the end boss being HBLB.

Does the dungeon glyph disappear forever if I remove it from my ritual altar, even though other players have visited it and even though I set it to "open"? Would it stay so long as someone else had it open via a glyph?

When a dungeon is created (while online with PSN+) it's stored on the game's servers for a while (about a month AFAIK). That doesn't have anything to do with your save file itself, so that's a pretty clever idea I'm surprised no one has thought of yet.

Are you talking about spelunking in your own dungeons? Maybe you have to press square at the tombstone and say "Open Dungeon?" Even when it does work, it's gonna take at minimum like three minutes (usually more) after you ring your bell before someone joins. I usually just play through the dungeon like normal and they follow the trail of bodies to get to me.

>>

Blood echoes stop becoming a problem once you do chalice dungeons. Also, it's not like you're constantly wasting bullets anyways. You don't rely entirely on tools.

arcane builds aren't JUST for hunter tools, anon
>>
>>169417039
>>169417056
>>169417059
All of it just seems to use a ton of bullets and when I tried using a cannon on my str character I just ran out of bullets immediately and put it away and never touched it again.
>>
>try out the saif to see if it's a fun SKL weapon
>it's slow and has awkward leaping attacks on basic R1s

So why is this thing good?
>>
>>169416887
Hunter Tools are helpful and you do end up blood bulleting a lot if you enjoy using them/if you make use of the Flamesprayer, but the real draw of making an ARC build is infusing your weapons with fire or pure ARC damage.
>>
>>169417197
>what are blood bullets

>>169416887
Blood Bullets and converted weapons mang
>>
>>169417197

The cannon consumes massive amounts of bullets. Plus, with blood bullets, you can use your tools and guns a LOT before you run out.
>>
>>169417467
Collapse it and it's easier to use. Untricked is nice for delayed attacks and the l1 trick attack. The dash on the tricked r1 closes gaps easy, as do most of its attacks. The scaling is close to Saws so it's comparable when it comes to damage and speed. Not as great as Saws imo but it's very close.
>>
Is there a good combination of blt and arc which doesn't go towards BL 120? Or would I have to cut much in vit?

Are we still alive enough this weekend for FC?

I have the itch to come back and play an oldass character of mine, even if she's not min/maxed
>>
>>169417792

The saw spear is okay, but honestly I find the BoM are the best of what I have right now. I don't have the Rakuyo, but the BoM hit the fastest and hit almost as hard, but also have a better moveset. The dashing R1 is insanely good, and while the R2s are slow they also hit really hard as well.

I just feel like I'm sticking with these almost exclusively. With 18 ARC and the AoB I have almost no issues. Kind of disappointing that I picked up the Saif, upgraded it, and it feels so weird to use.
>>
>>169417197
The cannon uses 12 bullets, the most expensive damage spell (A call beyond) uses 6. Executioner's gloves uses 3, and augur and blacksky eye use 1. It's a lot easier to manage blood bullets when you're using that few at a time rather than fucking 12.
>>
>>169417020
No worries m8
>>
>>169417827
NS: 40/8/10/14/40/40 puts you at 102. That's the minimum you should go for Blt/Arc. You could start with WoS with 14 Strength for Letter instead of Chicago but you'll lose out on most guns. 40 Blt is decent for Blt weapons, 40 Arc is meh for converted weapons and Tools. If you don't mind going higher, put points into Arc to help them.
>>
>>169417934
BoM is a fun weapon, but Saws dominate it in PvE due to serration, ease of use, decent speed, scaling, etc. For PvP Rakuyo, Saif and Saws are pretty top tier, BoM does well on its own especially with its dash attacks. Try out the Saif in PvP and you'll see why it makes people complain about it.

>>
>>169418701

That's fair. I was using the spear exclusively before I got the BoM, but honestly I like the speed and the moveset of the BoM too much not to use it. I guess with the 50% bonus to beasts on serrated saws it could be better to use it, but... I dunno.

I guess I can try getting used to the saif. Just a pity I'm not a huge fan of it,

Iirc serration only adds 20% damage vs beasts. It'd be pretty insane if it was 50%. You'll get use to the Saif, especially against hunters. Untricked mode does feel a bit weird.
>>
so where do I proceed to after beating Rom

If you're comparing the Cane to Saws then of course it's gonna look terrible. Some people consider it "hard mode" if you start with it since it's not as great early game as the other options but it's honestly not that bad. Take advantage of its tricked mode, that's where it shines the most. Untricked is as fast as a Saw, downside is no serration and lesser AR. Fun weapon in PvP, decent in PvE.

I can't decide between STR/ARC and pure ARC. Pure ARC would have more powerful tools, but STR lets me use more fun weapons like Logarius's Wheel and Amygdalan Arm.

Just wondering though, what's a good stopping point for STR and ARC? 25 STR/50 ARC?
>>
>>169428167
Yes, 25/50. Amy Arm is not good for Str/Arc, only Pure Str. You can go 50/25 Str/Arc for both but then your Tools will suck. If you don't mind going over 98-117, you can get 40 Vit and 50/50 Str/Arc without going over 120.
>>
>>169428167
Str/Arc does not let you use the amygdalan arm. It has REALLY shit arc scaling, like the burial blade and the blades of mercy. That said, you can use Logarius's tricked mode really well. You can also use HMS, which is really fun.

If you're doing Str/Arc, 25/50.
>>

I don't really care much for PvP, but I don't feel the need to go excessively high BL unless I'm just going into NG+ and on.

Best Cainhurst Hunter Build?

>>
>>169429108
50/25 STR/SKL
>>
>>169428998
The Imgur link should have the basics to follow. Early fire gems on a Saw Spear will do most of the work as long you pump Vit and Arc. Rush through Cainhurst for Exe gloves and it'll melt almost everything. The gems are available after BSB, and Tools after Amelia. Before all that, use BB Pellets and Papers. Also whatever Phys gems you pick up along the way. Molotovs scale with Arc too.
>>
>>169429108
>>
>>169428998
It means you can basically pick any weapon you want as long as it doesn't have more than base skill as a requirement. The only weapons you can't convert are HMS, Logarius, Boom Hammer (which all have from decent to fantastic arcane scaling anyway), Rifle Spear, Reiter (because of the gun), Amy arm, BoM, and Burial Blade (which have terrible arcane scaling). Also, dont do Beast Claws because elemental damage doesn't scale with beasthood.

To spam tools there's also executioner's gloves, and blacksky eye if you wanna go into the DLC. Other than that, literally any weapon not mentioned above will scale entirely off of Arcane if you stick just one elemental gem on it (and you get a fire radial as soon as you beat the first chalice).
>>
>>169429341
>>169429509

That's not too bad. I don't really want to use the SS though, since I was using it in my last playthrough. Would the Hunter's Axe be a bad replacement, or is there something with the SS that makes it so good (potentially the serrated)? I figured if I wasn't going to leave STR at base stats it would be a decent option.

Sounds like I'll be going to BSB and getting that fire gem first and foremost, then rushing for the gloves. I think the eye would be a little too hard since Ludwig seems kind of tough for a low level character.
>>

Yeah you can use anything converted, SS just makes it easier. If you're going Str/Arc the extra Arc will definitely help the Axe with Physical gems before getting fire/bolt/arcane gems.
>>
>>169430171
Why ARC?
>>
>>169429897
Hunter's axe is fine, people just recommend saw spear since it's broken and a lot of people have trouble with early arcane builds. I personally use the whirligig, and also the stake driver and HMS.

>>
>>169430228

I might get the spear then, since I imagine the moveset and serrated is why it's considered so good. I was just being stubborn.

I AM also thinking of trying a variety of different weapons, since once I have a single fire gem I can start using them without worrying about scaling. Specifically, since it's right at the start, I might try out the Kirkhammer.
>>
>>169430419
Kinda? You have to get used to it, and it's very short range. And I personally prefer the boom hammer, since it's the Kirkhammer with exploding but without the sword.
>>
>>169430419
Everything's viable and Kirk is fun. Either Str or Arc is good for it
>>
>>169430482
Yeah fair enough. It'll give me a reason to use the Healing Bell, too. Is there a good pure ARC build? Closest I've ever gotten was my hybrid build with 20/40 STR/ARC when I wanted to be an executioner.
>>
>>169430531
The hunter's axe is also considered really good, and it has two awesome moves, so I'd personally suggest that. I used that until I could get the stake driver, then used exclusively the stake driver until about yahar'gul when I started using the whirligig.

Kirkhammer's also pretty neat, and can do similar things to the stake driver. Also, when you beat the watchdog, coop and help someone else beat it and you get a second good fire radial.

50-99, 70 is an okay spot. CF: 40/12/10/11/5/70 for 98 meme, don't listen to 99 Arc memers with shit Vit. You could fit another 20 Arc without going over 120, 90 is a a great spot. 11 Skill for Saif, you could drop 2 points if you don't wanna use it.

>>169430952
That's actually one of my problems with Kirkhammer. I don't really like the ground slamming R1s. It's okay in Monster Hunter because you get the golfswing after two of them, but if I'm gonna be pounding the ground I want a god damn pancake. I mostly use the charged R2 for Kirkhammer, with L2s when I need to clear out waves of enemies.

I don't have PSN+, but can't I just remake the chalice and run through it again for a second fire gem? I wouldn't mind terribly, it shouldn't take long. I'll stick with the axe, and try and grab the wheel and saw early ish since when I found the saw on my SKL playthrough I REALLY wanted to make a STR character for it. It's cool as shit.

Yeah you can, if it's worth it for you then do that instead

Wasn't totally sure that was how it worked. Sounds like a plan, my man.

CHRIST I'm bad at this. A couple more fights and I gotta get dinner, though.

I dunno, Bloodborne PvP isn't the most fun to me. Maybe I'll try my hand at spelunking, though.
