Crash & Burn Edition
Previous jej: >>169040360

The thread is dedicated to all games about building machines and systems out of blocks, in space or otherwise. Also, all these games are ded. Only ded games may join, otherwise they must have their own thread.

WebM for physicians:
>gitgud.io/nixx/WebMConverter.git

List of currently known and vaguely not as dead /egg/ games (this list is not fully inclusive and if you think a game might belong here, feel free to ask):
>Algodoo
>Avorion
>Besiege
>Chode - Children of Ded Earf
>Empyrion - Galactic Survival
>Factorio
>From the Depths
>Homebrew - Vehicle Sandbox
>Infinifactory
>KOHCTPYKTOP: Engineer of the People
>Machinecraft
>REM
>Robocraft
>Robot Arena 2
>Scrap Mechanic
>SHENZEN I/O
>Space Engineers
>StarMade

Games that are definitely not /egg/:
>Starcraft
>The general that quite literally cannot be named. The Notch scam artist one.
>Hearthstone, found in the hearthstone general, /hsg/, not in this general.

Information about these games, such as where to get them if they're not on steam, trailers, /egg/ conquered/hosted servers, and other shit can be found in this pad:

Don't be entitled. Multiplayer was promised by junior developer bac9, while he designed the space center for some fucking reason. He had no business making gameplay promises when he was just a modeler. Maxmaps, then community lead, blacklisted him from game development for his lying and was promoted to producer as a result.

Kerbal Space Program has a long and rich development history.

And how bac9 ruined it. Thank god they canned him after this before he could work on any parts. You should see the buttugly concepts he was working on. Amazing they even let him go without pursuing legal repercussions for his incompetence.

It would require first effort and then using a program for a "active" version of what one would call "fun", and that's verboten.

>>
>>169300764
I saw logisim mentioned in relation to Shenzen last thread - I get that the concepts are similar since they're both digital logic, but how is logisim a "game" with "goals"? As far as I know, it's actually a digital logic simulator used for circuit development, isn't it?

>>
>>169301893
>As far as I know, it's actually a digital logic simulator used for circuit development, isn't it?
NO NO NO! You are mistaken! It's a next generation sandbox physics game in the vein of Space Engineer with a extremely detailed logic simulation aspect. It was made by a group of gamers that felt that Solidworks, the direct competitor of Minecraft when it comes to crafting and building, didn't pay enough attention to stuff like the reverse leakage current of a diode! Isn't that great?
>>
>>169302198

You're not an engineer, just lazy - and not in the "good programmer" sense of the word.
Engineers solve problems, and doing so requires a varied set of mental tools, and by ignoring theory you're limiting said toolset.
Go be ignorant somewhere else.

IIRC that capsule they were in wasn't technically "part" of the ship, hence the hard vacuum on 5 sides - rather, it was a... personnel pod? Or something?
>>
>>169319439
>>169318128
>>169298334

first few times I saw this I though about how cool it was, just like the show and or game I dreamt of as a kid.

Now I realise scientifically and tactically it's all fucking wrong.

The ultimate space weapon will always be lasers. They're utterly unavoidable, have no prior warning they're going to hit, as accurate as what points it, and have very little loss in vacuum.

With that in mind, the ultimate tactic is going to be "don't get seen and hit first, and disable or destroy on hit".

So I would imagine most attack craft of any kind are going to be a very absorbant to just about everything on the EM spectrum panel on the front, cooled as low as possible, with the ship behind that, with a very hot radiator on the other side dissipating loses from the laser, any loses from the power supply and aux equipment, and of course ejecting heat from the panel. Then on firing have a window in that panel, or only just outside it (possibly deployable) to fire the laser.

With that in mind the ultimate detection system may well become what is missing visually. If the star-field is continually checked, when something is missing, then there is something blocking the way.

an obvious failing of the proposal is that from the rear it's really fucking obvious. But it's not really avoidable. You're either visible from every side, therefore vulnerable to laser weapons, or you can make all or nearly all but one side very hard to detect and try to keep the side that's easy to detect away from where you think the enemy is.
>>
>>169323989
Keep in mind that they might not have lasers yet. It's not 100% clear what kind of technology they DO have - yeah, spaceships and terraforming, but spaceships are easy by now and terraforming could be just splitting things into gasses etc. on a massive scale. Lasers are still difficult today, and chemical lasers (IIRC) are still the way to go. You'd need a massive energy source to power them (again, IIRC) and a thin layer of reflective film might be able to stop them.
>>
>>169324419
Laser Weapons are a thing already.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0DbgNju2wE

there's other such devices being developed and tested. The above one actually remained installed on the operational ship after testing as they were so impressed. So they may well use it, if such an opportunity arises. Although it's not super destructive, it is very very accurate, so the more sensitive or critical parts can be targeted such are warheads, engines, optics etc.

>>
>>169323989
We've tested this in chode, lasers are expensive as hell and the sheer amount of waste heat produced by the reactor to power it makes stealth even more impossible than it is just from the body heat of your crew. Instead it might just be swarms of laser drones trying to take out swarms of super small drones and missiles before they can reach the cap ships. We don't have every technology though, co2 lasers might tip the balance since they're very efficient and co2 is cheap as hell. Also in The Expanse they use their handwavium super thrusters for missiles that can accelerate in the low tens of g, good luck shooting down a swarm of those with lasers.
>>
>>169326631
>Also in The Expanse they use their handwavium super thrusters for missiles that can accelerate in the low tens of g, good luck shooting down a swarm of those with lasers.
But why would tracking even a very manoeuvrable missile be difficult from a distance? sure a human can't do it, but should be piss easy for a tracking system. And that's what makes lasers so dangerous.
>>
>>169326984
you realize how big/powerful a laser has to be to instantly shoot down a missile travelling at that kind of speed? it's doubtful you can even heat it up enough before it hits its target. remember, we're talking about "realistic" lasers, not Star Wars ones.
>>
>>169326631
Also I forgot about the part with cooled panels, space is really, really god damn empty and cold. If your panel is even a few degrees hotter than the rest of space it'll be detected from tens if not hundreds of thousands of kilometers away. Also, when you thrust you throw a giant plume of heat much wider than the panel, so they can tell where you're headed and when you'll arrive judging by the amount of energy in the exhaust plume and the estimated weight of the now very obvious ship. Here's a massive compendium on all the reasons why there ain't no stealth in space http://www.projectrho.com/public_html/rocket/spacewardetect.php

>>169326984
It's not about tracking it, it's about shooting down these ultra fast missiles before they blitz past your laser. Once those missiles reach the maximum effective range versus whatever material the missiles are shrouded in, you have to shoot them down before they reach you, and they could already be moving at tens of kilometers per second.
>>
>>169323989
Have fun cooling them and the generators.
>>169323191
Proximity fused shells are literally the exact same thing but significantly more efficient and all the shrapnel actually hits.
>>
>>169327527
That's what the hot side is for.

Have fun with your magic stealth ship that "radiates heat internally"

>>169327182
>>169327196
Wasn't talking star wars ones either. Watch any video of a tracking head in action and even civ ones are incredibly accurate. Aside from that, I'm not talking star wars lasers no. I'm talking lasers that impart energy onto a target to cause failure. which comes back to the first point, the key will be stay far away and detect first, and disable a critical system on the enemy ship, i.e what they'll try and detect you with, attitude control systems or pressurized tanks, from a really far fucking range.

There are technologies now for satellites and ground stations to communicate with fucking lasers. Huge ranges, big rotational speed with huge accuracies, yet it works.
>>
What's with everyone here using the argument of "lol radiators" as a way of undermining any argument made in favor of Expanse? Are heatsinks really that far a stretch of imagination in a sci-fi world?
>>
>>169328034
I don't think you understand how much heat you're dealing with. Your crew will boil. I'm not even talking about staying stealthy at this point. Lasers in space capable of defeating the kind of threats we're talking about will dump massive amounts of heat into your spacecraft along with whatever you have to power them with. You will not be able to radiate it fast enough to not melt.
>>

>>
>>169306364
>animal abuse

That was all catraper desu
>>
>>169328386
Refueling your heatsinks working fluid is way bigger problem than disposing of it.
>>
>>169328034
Again, it has absolutely nothing to do with being able to accurately target the missile. It has to do with imparting heat to cause failure many times over to destroy the many missiles that are screaming towards you at tens of kilometers per second before they reach you. Staying undetected isn't an option, if your gigantic laser ship can be stealthy, then a few thousand spy satellites spread in orbit around the body you're defending will be even more stealthy, and they can get all sorts of angles that your panel will be useless against.
>>
>>169328226
Yes, how do you actually make radiators that dissipate useless heat? Background radiation might be able to transfer heat but it's pretty much useless when we are talking about mini power plants floating in space.
Entropy is a bitch.

Usually that sort of stuff only ever gets used by the older students, since by that point they and the teachers know each other well enough that the students can pretty much do what they want (or at least when/where without getting into trouble).
6th form in our school was great since we had no uniform and classes were small enough that we were finally able to just talk to the teachers like people.

Yeah that one
Here in Britland years go up to year 11, then for whatever reason they get dropped and 17/18 is just called 6th form.
And then college/university happens and there are no year systems there anyway.
And every country has a different system to make everything easy to understand.

The design of rod logic memory I'm using to store the carry/borrow for a full adder/subractor means it has to be reset before the value is inputted. On top of that, in its reset state the output is actually 1 instead of 0.

Why didn't they just make ARMA-like scenario editor. Having to switch constantly between their Visual scripting tool and the game fucking sucks.

Since this update does literally nothing to your existing configuration.. No. You can if you want, though, and should expect these things on beta branch.
>>
If, to prolong its usefulness, you were to equip a program with the ability to recognize and avoid things which may reduce its efficiency, would that constitute a sense of self preservation? Would reducing the program's ability to perform its function be tantamount to inflicting physical pain against an organism? Would that program, given that its goals don't particularly cross any lines of morality, deserve at least the same rights as animals?

How far are we from creating things that can recognize the information they are given and accurately decide whether or not something is hazardous to it? Is the HURTbot, which seems to learn an respond in a Pavlovian sense, and seems to be designed to avoid "negative" stimuli, deserving of basic rights?

>>169343181
What, to you, would determine whether a program is sentient or not? How do you know if a program truly feels pain, joy, sadness, fear , or anger?
Machines are incapable of feeling pain in the same way we are, but pain in organisms is merely a basic self-preservation response. Would giving a machine the ability to know when something is dangerous to its ability to function not be the closest analog to physical pain?

You can do it with some creative retrofitting. Build your adventure raft into a little self contained module with only engine, fuel and heartstone then include that same module in your battleship design somewhere.

You might need extensions to stop the heartstone exploding during the retrofit it took me a while to figure than one out.

Never.

We're making an entirely separate game with specialised shit for that, but there's a lot that can be ported over. Particularly the drive chain, control, building, saving, damage, and multiplayer.

We wouldn't be able to integrate this into REM because Unity doesn't like changing the overall physics settings on the fly as you need it, and some other specific bullshit I won't bore you with.

Our working title is "Ramshackle."

Always taking suggestions on the name for REM and our other projects.

We even got bored one night and modeled a bunch of shit that would be expected for a successor to Robot Arena 2, which we've played many hundreds of hours of. Multiple motor, battery, wheel, control module and belt sizes.

Baking lightmaps for large open areas is a pain, if anyone was wondering.

The effect of pain and suffering on a living organism is empirical, even if the level of acceptable suffering is not. Empathy is derived from a common evolutionary path and thus common indicators of suffering.

The morality of pain and suffering as applied to an artificial construct is dependent on the exact nature, complexity and agenda of the construct in question. At a certain point it might just be that certain complex intelligences deserve the benefit of the doubt in what hurts them and what does not.

There is a Story mission where they teach you how to set up lasers.. This is all I know
>>
Does loading a gun off multiple ammo controlers decrease the shell time to clip?
>>
>>169362695
Laser warner must have LOS to the outside of the ship. Smoke consumes fuel and ammo. Pretty straightforwards other than that.

>>169362885
It does not.
>>
>>169363128
Do the warners only work in the direction they face? The ship is covered in warners but the smoke almost never deploys when needed
>>
>>169362695
Laser Warners will detect laser damage taken in a certain radius, as long as they're connected to a mainframe. Smoke dispensers in that area will be [triggered] as long as they're connected to that mainframe too.
It's a good idea to change their settings [Q] so that the warner only launches one smoke at a time, so you can stagger your smokes to cover each other while they're recharging
>>
>>169363323
Thanks. Do multiple smokes give more protection or will a single cloud give the maximum protection?

Factorio time. While i blitzed though research after making good ratio of assemblers (5/6/12), and will probably end is soon after making everything run perfectly (0.15 can`t come soon enough) i want to use circuit network to optimise it.
Basically - there should never be more than X science packs of a given pack. Including the ones lying on belt.
So, i connected all my science pack assembler inserters and want to count their output. Arithmetic combinator, Input - B - packs, output - B, connected to itself via a green wire. (classic i = i + a) The goal is to store B and increase with each pack passing through the inserter. But it doesn`t work.

Consult the forum, there's a billion different circuit designs.
However, you should not attempt to output B, as it'll feed back into the combinator.

Instead, where B is a single-tick signal with an integer value corresponding to an added item:
Input: B and A
Output: A as A+B
Feedback unto itself

That being said, only counting the input is destined for eventual failure.
Keep in mind that several techs have uneven consumption of science packs.

Speaking of weather systems, the way those clouds on the western side just terminate at the edgedoesn't make sense, which ends up making the whole thing not make sense.
Given they would follow the path of least resistance, they would travel along the edges, being occasionally fed into by additional cloud cover originating from those central bodies of water.
I'm no meteorologist, but the edges of a setup like this would probably have near-constant cloud cover, assuming said clouds were left to do their thing.

Thanks. It appears that decider combinator can work as a memory cell.

Red feed with inserter readings. Green output feeds on itself. When science packs > 0, output the science pack number. 4, each for one color

All the output from science machine inserters goes through arithmetic combinator and multiplies by -1.

It may have some bugs, and may not count perfectly (i still have to refine the design), but it seems to work.

4 decider combinators read the item counts and disable or enable assemble inserters, by setting 4 virtual signals 1 or 0.

Some techs have uneven consumptions, but it just means some part of setup will sit idle for a bit.
When i`ll have only rocket silo left to research, i`ll dismantle the science factory and research the silo with the buffered science.

No, it means that your laboratories can go into deadlock, requiring manual intervention.
For simplicity's sake, let's say you're feeding the labs with science in 1:1:1:1 ratio, even though the actual requirements are 2:1:1:1.
As research progresses, the red packs will become increasingly fewer, whereas the other packs will take up an increasing portion of the belt.
If going for long enough, the actual contents of the belt will be 0:1:1:1, while the research requires 2:1:1:1.
Seeing as there will be no space on the belt, research will stay stuck like that until you clear the issue or start researching something that doesn't require red science.

For example, if i`ll start to research a 200/100/100 recipe, i`ll produce 100 of each, fill the buffer and my other labs will stall while the red will produce 100 extra packs. The right side of feeding belt will be empty while left will be filled with green packs waiting.

The point is not having extra 9000 blue packs at the end of research tree, wasting resources.

It knows that it produced 1100 packs of each color. It knows that the system took 100 of each, except red, which the system took 200.
It now assumes that it has 1000 packs in storage, stopping production. It also assumes that it has 900 red packs and continues to produce them and only them.

It's more that railguns in the Expanse throw around 10kg rods of tungsten. The armor (either in solid plates or whipple shields) would be so heavy that it would compromise a ship's maneuverability. While their Epstein drive allows ships to have huge quantities of Delta-V, a ship with enough armor to actually stop a capital ship railgun would probably need much larger/more numerous thrust cones, drives, and fuel supplies. This would probably cut down on the number of weapons systems you could build in, which is probably the only reason left in the Expanse universe for building large warships.

Except you still use thrusters for sidereal movement. If he gave the option to entirely separate thrusters from angular acceleration and buff them in side movement (or, for fuck's sake, just allowed us to add side and front engines), that would make them pretty great.

Finally thought of a way to do my quicker memory latch that doesn't have to be reset for every memory entry.

The bottom blue bar is the input. It's either to the right (0) or to the left (1). Depending on its position, it allows 1 of 2 green sprung rods to pass through which cam the top blue bistable latch to the left or right. The position of the latch can then be read out using an identity latch to reinput into the adder.

I'm going to stick with the clunkier mechanism for the registers and use this one just for the adder-subtractor
