Because it's hard to distinguish the background and foreground leg it looks like the arms are in the wrong sync.

Head size is fine, that's a style thing, but the body itself should bob more.
Bring the body lower when the legs are apart, but keep the legs hitting the ground at the same pixels.

Well, try to see what ideas work well together. It isn't too bad to abandon a project for a while if you are bored with it.

Also, consider reducing your game's scope if it gets too big. For example, if you only have one great idea for the ending and aren't sure about how to start the game, you could try starting your game in the "final dungeon" and explore earlier parts of the adventure just in playable and nonplayable flashbacks.

I'm just using the mv rtp right now. I'm debating whether or not to make custom assets. It's a never-ending rabbit hole that can prevent you from ever finishing.

But yeah the slime is a slime. The player can talk to it and they will always ask for items and money infinitely until you tell them no. If you tell them no early on then they get mad and attack buff themselves. If you tell them after feeding them twice or more then they fuck off.

The next few enemies are recolored slimes with slightly different behavior.

Saps will ask you a random philosophical question and then attack you unless your answer is stupid. If you pick the "obviously wrong" answer they also give you an item to commend your "intellect".

Freshbloods will ask to drain your health infinitely until you stop them. If you feed them at all they will feel entitled to attack you afterwards. If you don't feed them they go into slime negotiation mode.

Goos do a random one out of the 3 previous.

Mess is a dungeon midboss but you can still negotiate a truce with it. You have to shame it for attacking you 3 times in a row without hitting back to make it give up.

It's not that bad. I actually watched the whole thing. She's a soulless asian for like 30 minutes but opens up halfway through.
I played the first demo and noticed that the health went way up. She never did any upgrades or extra battles other than the forced ones. She actually gives up on the last battle because it was too hard. She said she was going to try in another video to finish it.

I think that there is some truth to the fact that she didn't play as well as she should at some points, but she did say she had never ever played an rpg before. Given that, I'd say she did surprisingly well for the most part.

It's a really tough challenge to balance things out. My top priority is to make it challenging and interesting, so there isn't that much balance that needs tweaking as its stands now, only minor. That being said, any time a player says they are "confused" I try to take it as a lesson as a developer. Maybe some things should have been explained better. I already identified a few places where I can help clarify stuff like how even failing a release ability will still grant an effect, just not as powerful. The explanations stop after the Farm area (the demo), so it's important that I spend as much time as I can there laying the groundwork.

I really appreciate her uploading this, it's insanely helpful to hear someones random thoughts as they play the game.

Takes a while to rename everything to spec, but I'm doing this so none of the future devs will have to.

Everything so far is sectioned so Physical skills are Techniques, Magic skills are Magics, and unique or special skills are called Originals.

I-I feel kind of bad right now. I'm currently trying to build up a dynamic AI, rooted in responding to needs.

I started with food and hunger. In the test, when the NPC is hungry (hunger meter == 75), she walks to the food plate, eats, and returns to her old spot. To save myself on waiting time, I started her hunger meter at 76 and set eating to fill it only 5 rather than 25.

So everything works fine, but in this setup, I realized that by the time the NPC returns to her old spot, her hunger meter has already returned to 75, leading her to return back to eat, creating this endless loop of walking and eating.

It's like I've created a child and only given it a desire to feed, with no way to satiate itself. I-I'm sorry, little NPC2.

Damn. I moved the arms too much and now it looks like he is dancing or something.

Also, somebody in /aco/'s /weg/ told me to give him a shirt, but I think it doesn't look good. Besides, my idea for the story was that he was in summer vacation with his aunt in some rather warm town with either a lake or a beach nearby. So I imagined it would make sense if he slept shirtless.

What do you guys think of the walking animation and character design now?

Try to look at some walk cycles from other animations to get some help, but mainly:

Oh, wait. That might be one of those 3-in-1 animations. If you notice that it's more suited for going straight top to bottom without the left and right frames, you may need to split the three columns into 3 separate $dance.png files.

Unless using the starting frame as the top left and turning off walking animations somehow maintains step-consistency when turning.

The plan is a priority system which should factor in convenience as well as intensity of need. So if it happened to meet the threshold for sleep and eating at the same second (it updates per second), it would factor what it's currently doing along with how far the nearest bed/food source is to decide which it will do next. It may even finish its current action first if that has a higher priority value, which is pretty likely since just meeting the threshold is fairly low in priority.

I want to include a queue or scheduler for successive actions, but that's proving to be a bit more tedious and messy than I wish.

Designing puzzles and trying to fix this one glitch that I turned into a feature.

It was kind of working. Music would stop and game would just hang with nothing happening.

Eventually i managed to do an escape battle item by checking for "can't escape" state and if it's not on aborting the battle through a common event but damn.

Don't even use any scripts right now, wonder why that didn't work. Here's hoping i won't forget to put that state on when needed.

Anyone had something similar? Common events are fine but if i could get a simple tick box working it sure would be much more convenient, already using plenty of common events could keep it more organized.

It was a comedy-focused zombie game featuring my group of friends as the main characters. It used the rm2k3 default battle system and was full of such obtuse inside jokes that I don't get about half of them, playing it about ten years later. It had all custom assets, though, so i think it was still a decent bit charming.

Some project I did just to learn how to use RPG maker. It was some sort of parody with a self aware MC who kept trying to beat the first boss and failing each time due to having simple things locked before each defeat, like item vendors, skill trainers or believing he was your stereotypical jrpg swordsman hero when he was a squishy mage with a cripplingly low str and vit.

It was supposed to transition the tilesets and graphics from shitty paint 20 second works to RTP to actually decently made tiles, and supposedly going to end with the "it was all a dream" punchline.

Several in middle/high school where the MC was someone like me - loners who hated authority. Usually stuck in some crummy military academy. Mostly (but not always) gifted with some kind of power. Occasionally joined by a girl who either liked him, was as snarky as him, or both. Otherwise, it was a nice kind girl who only wanted to help the MC overcome his edgyness (and then later they'd fall in love).

I also tried to make more than a few in the WRPG vein where the main character was highly customizable. I kept making more options than I could code, so it fell through.

I get so stuck trying to make character creation varied and interesting that I don't even develop a plot. I like making systems like FFT or Morrowind where your character can have all sorts of subtleties. Seems kinda silly now, making an RPG with the gameplay as the focus. Much easier to fiddle with classes than learn how to write good chracters

I've been workling on ym current project for too long. I feel like if I drop it and start over again, I'd get so much done. It'd be true for a while, but the honeymoon would surely wear off and I'd be stuck in the same rut as last time: Unable to finish. The drive running out before the work. Reminds me of fighting games a bit: Beating certain people just seems impossible until you figure it out, and then one day you beat them and in retrospect it all make sense. I gotta bust through this, or finishing will never make sense.

Exactly my man. I've had those moments too, I know that feeling. What helps me is to think about how much I am learning with art/music/game design. Though stumbling is expected, you're still doing something creative and constructive. To me it's more productive and eventually fulfilling than watching tv all day or grinding in an MMO. Just remember that sweat and work is most of what makes you successful. Having the ability and determination to see a project through is what separates sucessful people and non sucessful.
