What do you want to do?
UE4 is technically better but it's more complicated and kinda bloated, blueprints are easy to start with but a project can easily get unmanageable if you don't know what the fuck you are doing.

It's easier to get good results in Unity but the skill ceiling is lower.

I don't really know about Godot, it's relatively new and still in active development, I would prefer Unity over it since it's more "settled".

Entering a jam can help, if the theme restricts you enough to might think of something interesting. You could also try making games from genres you almost never play. For example I never play tower defense games, but I made one and got some ideas from it. Basically it makes you think of things your brain doesn't normally think of.

The point of game jams is usually to give inspiration to those who want to make a game but don't have the creativity to whip up a "good" idea.

What is the point of joining a jam when it is essentially "Game Jam Jam! Make a game! Have fun!". Like fuck, if I wanted to literally just make any old game without direction, I wouldn't be looking at jams in the first place.

in UE4 anim graphs, how can you set up a 'Any State' Transition like in Unity? I need it for a take damage animation, and I don't want to draw transition lines for every single animation. You can't transition between state machines as far as I know. And the "blend by bool" node does not work, because that blends instead of transitioning which means anim notifies still fire which fucks everything up.

Does UE4 seriously not have a 'Any State' Transition?
>>
>>169109385
>The point of game jams is usually to give inspiration to those who want to make a game but don't have the creativity to whip up a "good" idea.
Your opinion.
For me the best part of a jam is making something new, a challenge. Because that's what I enjoy when making games, trying new stuff, learning stuff, doing something out of my comfort zone.
Go join loli jam, and I will join rush hour jam. Join both of them if you want. Problem solved.

Exactly, combining two genres would help people get "good" ideas like patapon, or crypt of the necrodancer.

>What is the point of joining a jam when it is essentially "Game Jam Jam! Make a game! Have fun!".
>Like fuck, if I wanted to literally just make any old game without direction, I wouldn't be looking at jams in the first place.

Like a challenge to make a shitty box office movie game.

Imagine a rush hour rpg that's just an abridged version of the movie with hilarious stats and quotes from the movie.
Or just a mash up of different iconic scenes but each is its on genre of game. Like the eiffel tower scene is platform beat em up and there's like a frogger car part i don't fucking know
maybe a sex game part when you try to fuck that assassin girl but have to pass qtes

Thanks. The whole idea of "hurr I'll take a game and stick the theme of the jam in it" is a meme and it's pretty much never been done.
>>
The purpose of a game jam is to challenge the participants. The theme of the jam serves as a limitation, challenging participants to work around it.
The reason loli (and most "thematic" themes that are unrelated to programming) doesn't work well is because it doesn't limit you. You can take any existing game, stick a loli in it, and if fits the theme. Since the theme is not limiting, it is not challenging.
A platformer with a loli protagonist fits the theme.
A shooter with a loli protagonist fits the theme.
Tetris with the blocks being lolis fit the theme.
Telling people to "just be creative" is a poor excuse. It is like a racing track where the finish line is 1 meter away from the start. People would complain that it's too easy and you just go forward. Telling racers to be creative would be retarded, just because someone did a 360 before crossing the finish line wouldn't make the race track better, it'd only be improved by actually making it longer and adding turns.
The challenge should be the theme itself, not having a theme so broad that you have to create your own challenge around the theme.

How would you apply a pathfinding grid to terrain? As in, once I got my grid that A*/D*/flowfield/whatever pathfinds through, how do I dynamically tell it what cells of the grid are impassable?

Obviously for shit like objects (e.g. walls, boxes, rubble, whatever) I can just spheretrace on the centre of the grid cell. How do you deal with terrain stuff, like a steep cliff? Look at the heightmap, calculate the slope, and decide what slope angle is considered impassable?

Doing it by hand isn't really ideal I think.

New people just need to take part on a demo day or a jam and they will be able to vote for the next jam.
Nobody is forcing them to join a jam if they don't like the theme.

A list of 10 themes gets compiled through polls, surveys whatever.
Then, one day, one of us sets up a livestream.
On this live stream, the host takes the list of themes and puts it in one of those sites that can reorder your strings in random order.
After 2-3 rerolls, the theme at number one is chosen for the jam.
This way nobody can say it's been rigged or anything.

don't do global variables

make a controller object that stores all variables you want

and there's no reason why whatever you want to implement would even need a global variable or controller object

And don't make your game depend on load orders either, all variables you need should be initialized before any object even tries to do anything.

Just don't actually create the arrow until you release button for firing and at that time do a with instance_create(x,y,arrow){pass variables based on length of time button was held, etc}
>>
>>169116514
That's pretty much what I've been doing. And when creating the actual arrow it's supposed to set the move direction speed = to strength. But it's not working unfortunately.

Along with the general notion that globals are bad, yo, GML globals are especially bad because the way they are implemented is actually quite inefficient. Granted, you'll probably not make your first game so expensive as to notice this inefficiency, but still it's better practice to just not use globals at all if you can avoid it.

In GM:S, is there any way whatsoever to guarantee that one set of objects has their step events before another set?

I want to have controller objects for each player, and the individual player objects poll their controller and react accordingly. It's pretty necessary to my game that they function this way.

But if, say, Player1's step occurs before Controller1's, Player1 will react to the inputs from last tick. One solution would be to have a script called by the player object do all the updating for the controller object, but that still doesn't solve every problem. For instance, if Player1 needs information about the inputs for Player3, but Player3 hasn't had its step yet, we still have issues.

I know this sounds like I'm overly complicating things, but for this game, these interactions are absolutely necessary.

To make matters worse, the Begin Step and End Step events have issues too. Begin Step occurs before input is grabbed, so it's useless to my controller objects. End Step occurs after objects are moved into new X and Y positions, so that's useless for my player objects.

What the fuck do I do here? If all of the controllers always occur before all of the players, I have no issues. But Gamemaker emphasizes all over their documentation that instances go in whatever order they damn well please.

Save me from this hell.

It helps make my life easier when it comes to AI and maybe networking down the road. Every mob in the game is playable, so treating them all identically (as a Character object which polls a Controller object) allows me to swap things easily (Player-Controller object/CPU-Controller object/Player-Controller object that sends or receives inputs during online play/AI, etc). It's the only really easy way I've thought of to handle everything that I need it to do.

I'm not that good though... I'm only using non pixel 2d in order to cut dev time down. I'm actually researching art styles that slaveshop animators use in order to cut corners and make efficient animations/sketches that look "tabletop ready" for lack of a better term.

pic related. Looks good when your looking down on the model from a player view during a wargame because the visible portions are shaded acceptably and stuff is generally colored alright. But if you close in you can see they use a limited number of colors and don't actually color things like the face or tidbits or clothes and shit. Its all an illusion to produce passable results.

I'm glad there's people around who want to have a mechanic themed jam, be it rush hour (which I don't fully like) or whatever they find better.

Some light progress before I get started on the real progress (which will be enemies attacking and Dixie taking damage): Idle animations!

Like all her N64 forerunners, Dixie's got a bunch of idle animations that play if you go long enough without touching anything. Moving, pressing an action (any input but Pause, basically), or being in water/on a pole/on a rail/in the air will cancel the action and reset the timer.

Here's 3 of the animations I've done so far. You can't really tell because of the shards on her hand but Dixie throws scissors, rock, scissors, losing to rock, paper, and then winning to paper... but she cheats and throws rock on the third one and then sneakily extends it to scissors.

/agdg/ is full of autismos who don't dev anything too. At least in your game's general you get the opinions of non-modders, and tips on what to do things for that particular game instead of general programming tips.
plus if it's a retro game it's probably on /vr/, which is best board

Because I feel it would be distracting. The idles are just there for fun, if they start manipulating your camera then you might find yourself frustrated because you were trying to look at something/wait for something/etc and the game started doing shit on its own.

It's important that none of the idles interferes with anything.

For my game inspired by Zoo Tycoon, does this seem like a reasonable order in which to do things?

>ability to place fences
>ability to place animals that can move around but only inside their enclosures (unless there's a gap in the fence)
>animals have needs that must be met
>visitors can come to park
>visitors have needs
>visitors more likely to come if the park is "better" based on certain criteria
>visitors bring in money
>shit costs money

I added a small NPC spawner, before the NPC and the NPC spawner were the same thing and the NPC just changed how it was dependant on its NPC ID by pulling information from the DBC. Now the NPC Spawner handles creating the NPC and the NPC handles the rest.

This way if the NPC spawner fails for whatever reason it will just lead to the NPC failing to load rather then a buggy basic NPC standing in that NPC's place.

Game developers do this all the time with youtube channels who are... less than savory... and who they might not want being affiliated with their game or using their game to promote the channel.

What's a good way to implement short jumps and full jumps in a platformer?

>Start a timer on button down
>If button is released before a given threshold, then short jump
>If button is held beyond threshold, then full jump

This works, but it adds a few frames of delay before the jump starts.

Then I tried this:

>Apply upward velocity for x frames on button down
>If button is still held beyond a given threshold, apply upward velocity for x more frames

This also works, but it makes the jump feel "floaty", because the velocity is static throughout the first few frames. Gravity can't act on the player until after the full jump threshold.

Change the amount of gravity applied each frame so it's lower while the button's still being held down. You'll need to keep a bool that checks if the button's been released (so you can't do a weird thing by tapping repeatedly)

Once your up velocity is in the negative, always use full gravity regardless of if the button's being held down or not

The main idea is, for each 5 fruits a "bonus" with a fixed duration is started. In that bonus all enemies killed drops coins based in the fifth fruit score + enemy score. Those bonus could stack if you pick another 5 fruits and could be extended by zawarudo (look how the COMBO value in the webm increments which multiply all score)
Fruits are drops from enemy groups or hidden chest in the levels.
That effect represent that "bonus" duration. I want for each fruit attach a LUT texture with a different effect.
I'm still need some testing to consider the possibility of negative shaders like the fourth one in the video.

keep a timer that's as long as the animation takes and destroy the object after the timer's up

I have it so that a slashing animation appears in front of my player, collision and damage all working. What I want to do though is make it so that the slashing animation is always locked directly in front of the player, so the animation stays with them if they're falling or something. Anyone know how to make this work?

Where h and v are offsets to make it appear in the right spot.

I've met many people like this both in real life and in other online communities, usually gamers or other tech industry people. Web developers are the fucking worst of the worst, closely followed by indie game devs and 'career' gamers. General non-gaming programmers are a close third.

I'd like some help for my terrain height algorithm, I'm suspecting it's just faulty logic.

I start by making a list that stores how probable it is for any given tile to be heightened by one block, then I define how probable it is for the center tile (width is the full tile size of the map) to be heightened, and then the same for the edges. passes is self explanatory.

A loop goes in where the smaller chance is subtracted from the higher chance, and distributed across the whole thing (width of the map). finally, the elevation change applies if the condition is met (random(1) returns anything from 0 to .99...) with the added condition that if we go over the center (defined as width / 2) we start going down instead of up.

in the end, a final for spawnes these tiles. but things are not going right, can i get some help?

I was thinking of making a game where you play as pepe and you're an art collector.

The goal is to collect rare pepes and sell them on 4chan.

Would this piss off alot of autistic ppl tho?

I'm making a game in Löve, and dont how to hide the source code and assets of my game when it's ready, should I care about that right know and go for a compiled language or there is a way to do that in Lua?

If you're making this in GM:S, doing what you're doing right now is so simple it should barely take a couple of hours to work out.
I get the feeling that you have to be doing something extremely retarded for it to be that hard.
