Hunter retainers are good because they made HW monster mats such a pain in the ass, see all the HW leather, dragons blood (though this is less important), and deepeye tears.

If this trend continues you'll be happy to have them in SB, there will always be miners and botanists hitting nodes regardless of server, and BOT>MIN because quantity of resources returned. I think the only real reason to go MIN over BOT was the soil but that's pretty irrelevant for the time being

BOT gives you high yields on ventures, MIN noticeably less solo but ore/sand have more uses, however there tends to be more amounts of ore on the market at a given time for whatever reason, probably because it's easier to gather and more generally would want it.

Battle retainers get you all kinds of useful things that are actually expensive, nobody wants to go get the mats for HW glue, chimerical felt, any leathers etc, it's why leveling HW items fetch a penny even in comparison to ironworks crafting gear and so forth, people would rather spend or buy some lore related items and craft a level 60 piece of gear.

If you mean in regards to the field explorations, people only care aboit those for pets, and FSH is the most valuable, which it could be handy to have at least 1 FSH 3 BOT 2 MIN 2 battle if you're a ALC/CUL person

Eh, I think there's merit in MIN retainers simply because it's really easy to be jewed by that market otherwise. Miner retainers have value because alumen and dark alumen are always neat, and all ores before Meteorite can be requested, so you can lazily make gold ingots for i195 tool crafting to sell, too, Cloud Mica Whetstones, Chrysolite whatever and anything using Hardsilver which has an oddly strong market. Also MIN retainers provide the sands for each Enchanted Ink

BTN retainers make a ton because of the CUL ingredients you'd otherwise hate collecting, and Dark Chestnut Logs you use for leathers, a ton of ALC materials and such.

Honestly, the weakest retainer is likely FSH for anyone not heavily dedicated to CUL and/or ALC

I am not sure to what degree FSH is useful, however it has come in handy before as fishing is generally expensive both to buy fish and spend your time fishing, so when some retainers bring back even like 7-10 or even 15 of a particular fish it's a pretty good deal.

This is more important on a less populated server, as on a more populated one you'd be willing to just buy the fish instead go deal with them yourself.

And FSH exploration got pretty bad i think when they made waterfowl feather more common, it's only fat cats now I believe, maybe one or two other pets

FSH does still not do that much for CUL/ALC

A single FSH retainer lets you jew people through Shark Oil without actually having to get the sharks themselves. Ores will get nerfed, but not to the point that people can't jew every market. I think if more people had been spending time having retainers collect simple materials and ores ever since 3.0 then the HW accessory markets wouldn't be as hilarious as they are right now, where they're still going for an unreasonable amount HQ. Hell, stuff like Electrum Earrings HQ wouldn't go above 20k if people used retainers more, because that's a real non-existent amount of effort and time invested to make some really gross low level gathering earrings.

MIner retainers basically cut all the corners I'd otherwise use the market to cut, and then I'd just be selling to crafters anyway. Like I posted that example of Star Rubies yesterday or something because I've spent a month laughing at them, and that market never would have had the ridiculous cost per ruby if people had realized miner retainers gather both materials you need to mass produce them while watching anime

The thing is while those are good investments, it depends how you spend your time crafting too, not just others. You can easily go gather 99 raw of each gem or buy even, then mass produce without worry. The poster asking this to begin with is crafting a ton of potions and consumables, he's gonna be feeling having to go out and farm incessant amounts of mats constantly. Instead farm it with the retainers and go hit mining nodes because you usually don't need as much (except for ore which should be fixed with diadem)

And again to emphasize the importance of hunting mats, you dont want to go out and farm mobs, it's painful and dull, taking just enough effort to be super annoying and you're competing over resources.

It is all relative and server dependent though, but even on the smallest server, I can buy a stack of raw agate and be satisfied

The issue is, you don't need to invest in multiple hunting retainers. Combat retainers bring back more of the material than the other disciple retainers do. You start with two retainers for free, you don't actually need more than two at any point for mob materials. The ventures do not take long enough.

For example, you used Chimerical Felt earlier. You can mass produce that and it has a fair market, as do its crafts. Chimerical Felt uses Fleece, Chimera Manes and Natron. You can either buy 99 stacks of natron, you can buy 99 stacks of water and mass produce your own natron, or you can be the ass that jews the natron market because your one retainer brought you the water back while you were in Alexander

What takes more time. You going out and mining said material, or you having one retainer that does it while you are doing literally anything else ingame?

In the time it takes you to do an expert roulette, your ventures are mostly done. In the time it takes you to do A9S-A12S for the week, all of your ventures will be up unless you sent them on Quick Explorations for no real reason. Only one of these has to be a miner. In the time it takes you to clear A9S-A12S, you have the materials you need to craft several of any item within reason, ergo any non-masterbook craft.

To use the Chimerical Felt example. I send retainer A to get manes, I send retainer B to get Fleece and I send retainer C to get water. At the end of A12S, Retainer A has brought back enough manes to make 3 felts, B has brought back enough fleece to make 30 felts, and C has brought back enough water to make 30 natron. At no time expense to me, because I was doing my weekly. After that point, you can send the same two combat jobs off to get more chimera manes while crafting your felts, and sell those. And you'll have them back after you go into Frontlines for example.

The point of retainers is most definitely convenience and time, but not paying out to the market when everyone sells in stacks of 99 should most definitely count as convenience, especially when the materials needed to produce that given craft are coming from the time I spend in an instance otherwise unable to gather them until I exit.

you're missing the point that the person this discussion started with is a crafter, and as that you have to consider the cost of not doing something else gil-wise, it's assumed that someone will go gather as well as buy mats when needed as long as it makes back more gil, however what combination of retainers would alleviate gil and most importantly time the most?

on balmung manes cost 1.1k, natron is 400, you should just double up on manes instead of taking the time and effort to craft the natron for instance

and generally speaking, monster mats are the biggest pain in the ass coupled with gc seals which no retainer can help you with
