MiG-23 was canned and they can't say why due to an NDA. Everyone happily assumes that means someone else is working on it or at least has dibs and wants to keep it from getting out.
Here's the real reason. ED knows they are fucked by Russian laws, and will literally never ever be able to make anything newer than the MiG-21.
The NDA is ED telling devs not to tell anyone this fact, otherwise hype dies down, people leave the game, less money, etc.

Protip:
Fly with Flight Director on at all times unless you are going into autohover.
So when you look at the 5 sets of bluebuttons, they will all be on. I personally fly without the altitude button on though. That one seems to fight your pitch too much, but is more dangerous as let's you descend at will.
So you should have FD, and then everything but Altitude on. What this does is dampen the autopilot, and will reduce how much it fights you. I honestly don't understand how people fly without FD on, it's awful.
Also if you don't know, the trimmer button is what programs those channels. Where your stick is when you press the trimmer is the new center of that makes sense.
Learn to stay low, learn how to go from fast to in place hover, and learn how to quickly find and squire targets for you to chuck vikhrs at, and you will be one of the most effective CAS platforms in the game.

You should have FD and AP as off as possible. The only two blue buttons you need on are bank and pitch hold. Other than simply learning how the trim system works is the only thing you need to worry about.
And know there are times for quick press and release trimming. And times where you need to hold the trim button down while you execute a long maneuver. Really it's people not realizing they have to hold the trim button down the entire time as they change heading or do an immelman that's throwing them off

Let me shoot an AMRAAM at you when you have 80-90% fuel and all your missiles in the SU-27.
I'll let you do the same to me but I'm in a MiG-29.
Also the Su-27 techincally has a higher top speed, but operationally, the MiG-29 is so much faster. It accelerates a million times better due to its T/W and can get to ridiculous speeds even when full of fuel and weapons.
Su-27 struggles to maintain 1100km/h and you can pull like 5G's when going that fast.
To me the MiG-29 just feels like a powerful jet fighter. Su-27 just feels so slow and fat sometimes, it kills me.
I deal with the cons of the MiG-29 such as radar and weapons because it just meshes well with the way I like to fight.
Also the MiG-29 can stay up for really long periods of times if you are really good at fuel management, which I am because I fly it so much. Su-27 burns fuel much faster and doesn't get the same performance out of it.

Adding to this, they also dampen pilot inputs for the axes turned on, which makes the helicopter easier to control at the cost of some maneuverability. The Flight director, when its on (button is lit)
will keep the dampening on for the active autopilot channels, but show you on the HUD what the autopilot WOULD be doing instead of the autopilot having any actual control over the helicopters movements like when the flight director button is off.

If you want to fly with FD off (useful for making small corrections in transit or position changes in hover), hold down the trim button (which disconnects the AP the same way the FD does) and then fly to the position you want or set the attitude you want and then release the trimmer.

More practically once I'm about to show up to the target area I do a flat circle turn to bleed all my speed while not staying in one place.

Actually this is what ED wants you to think, in reality what's happening is that the autopilots are broken, and don't work like they should.
If you watch that one ka-50 video, the pilot is constantly tapping the trimmer and no crazy oscillations happen.
Even if you put the central trimmer mode on it still happens and that removes all input from the stick after trimming until it's centered.
There's clearly something wrong with the autopilots, even that one Mi-8 guy from the ED forums said something was strange and it made no sense that they give you extra input, and he's right, it would be a very dangerous helicopter to fly if it just gave you 20-25% extra bank or pitch.
Wouldn't be the first time ED doesn't want to acknowledge something.

Trimmer doesn't work like that in reality and it is impossible to emulate the real stick behaviour. Just press rctrl+enter and see where are you trying to set a trim. Of course it will oscillate if you fight with autopilot, making it compensate your input in completely wrong direction, and then you try to set a trimmer there to make things even worse. Just learn how to fucking use it and watch axis monitor.

If you are flying with us, learn the basics of the Su-27 and MiG-29. Avionics wise they are very similar. CAP is almost always welcome.
For ground pounding, if you are good in the Su-25T you will also be very useful. I used to be horrible at it, but I've been practicing lately and have improved. If you don't know, Blue Flag's system of capturing FARP's and Airfields includes killing all the units there, and then landing an Mi-8/Huey with troops.
The Su-25T can also run SEAD which is super easy but very important and useful.
