Lost Planet had a way to solve this I think, you took double damage at the very start and end of your dodge, the iframes were in the middle part, which worked great as risk/reward

The problem with rolling out of it, is that it still leaves the warden with an advantage because you can't punish off of rolling away, it costs atleast a third of your stamina and bears the risk, if only minimally, that you miss the dodge and get grabbed.

So it leaves you with a potential way to reset the fight, while the warden gets a risk-less chance for a grab or whatever.

Attacker's client decides if the attack is on target either at button press or midway through the animation depending on the attack. If your client decides you were on target, your model will just slide after people and connect from wherever.

You need to press GB early enough for your game to decide the other guy is still in range. If you wait too long to press the button then the reelback animation on the guy being parried will move them out of detection range, and the grab won't follow them.

The mechanic of dodges having enormous invincibility is not only badly communicated but also incredibly ridiculous.
Presumably the reason you can actually attack from two sides is to catch those side dodges ala tracking moves in Tekken but the fact that you can dodge right through them completely invalidates that and makes dodging by and far the best option in defense.

Dodge isn't a free way to get out of any and all pressure, because it's beaten by GB. GB is the safest form of offence in the game, so throwing GBs around isn't risky. A move which loses to something that people can chuck out regularly at low risk, isn't free.

I'm jumping in at the end of this shitty comment chain because you guys aren't being realistic about this. Timing and direction for dodging stuff is variable depending on the attack, so you either have to read every animation in time to make a decision, or you hit dodge immediately when you see an attack.

If you're able to read every animation in time, you'd just parry everything instead of dodging it. If you're hitting dodge immediately then you're going to be caught by feint>GB. Dodging isn't the problem you're describing it as.

You know how in DS both players can move and attack with no input delay, and the game takes information from both attacker and defender's clients to decide if an attack was on target, and if the dodge was timed correctly, allowing people to still dodge in latency?

You know how this system results in "phantom range" where if you're moving out of range and the attacker swings, you'll appear to be hit by something that's nowhere near you. Since you were still in range on the attacker's client?

For Honour uses exactly the same system to compensate for latency. The difference is that instead of deciding that an attack was on target at the point of impact, the game makes that decision at the start of the animation, and then slides player models around to make it look like it actually did reach.

That's why when hitting players that are sprinting around your character will suddenly acquire rollerskates.

To my fellow Samurais, as a long time player of massive PvP (and PvP in general) in other games, here are some tips I've learned that we could apply in For Honor:

If possible, always fight 2v1. In Guild Wars 2, we call it plus one-ing an opponent. A warrior's greatest weapon is not his sword and shield, but it is his ally with him. Even if it's 2v2, position yourselves so that you could 2v1 an enemy and then follow it up with the other enemy. Always be aware of your team mates. If a team mate is looking like he is in trouble, move your position to help him. Be a reliable ally, as you would rely on your team mate. Fight like a pack of wolves on the hunt, like a pride of lions on the kill.

A warrior's second greatest weapon is still NOT his sword and shield or katana that bends (but the longsword doesn't), it is his skill in fighting. Do not rely on classes and weapons and builds, rely on your skill. And skill is only acquired through practice. It is not something you are born with, it is something nurtured. Do not be ashamed to admit you know nothing and you suck, because it's the first step to your evolution. As a side note to this, do not rely on one skill set, ie. only good at one character class. For example, if a developer decides to change something on a character (aka. nerf), then you are fucked if you only know how to play Lucio.

Really, if Ubi intended you to wait out duels they would punish you for interfering, or make it impossible to do so. Part of the strategy of 2v2 is trying to hold out and play safe if you're losing the matchup, or go for a quick, clean kill if you can rely on your teammate.

Respect one another, even if you are a commander. Leaders are there as examples, not to be treated as kings (because kids act like that and they do not know the ways of the world). Leaders are meant to teach and guide people, not to belittle other people.

Population is a key factor in massive PvP. We need to recruit more people in our ranks. But ofcourse we should not rely just on numbers. We need to train recruits on how to be good at using their class (for a start).
