fucking magnets edition
previous ded: >>168563252

The thread is dedicated to all games about building machines and systems out of blocks, in space or otherwise. Also, all these games are ded. Only ded games may join, otherwise they must have their own thread.
Whether or not a game belongs in /egg/ is a case by case matter, however games that would belong in /svgg/, space voxel games general, are automatically considered /egg/

WebM for retards:
>gitgud.io/nixx/WebMConverter.git

List of currently known and vaguely not dead /egg/ games (this list is not fully inclusive and if you think a game might belong here, feel free to ask):
>Algodoo
>Avorion
>Besiege
>Chode - Children of Ded Earf
>Empyrion - Galactic Survival
>Factorio
>From the Depths
>GearBlocks
>Homebrew - Vehicle Sandbox
>Infinifactory
>Intersteller Rift
>KOHCTPYKTOP: Engineer of the People
>Machinecraft
>REM
>Robocraft
>Robot Arena 2
>Scrap Mechanic
>SHENZEN I/O
>Space Engineers
>SpaceChem
>StarMade

Games that are definitely not /egg/:
>Minecraft
>The general that quite literally cannot be named. The Mexican scam artist one. With the shitposters. Fuck off.
>Hearthstone, found in the hearthstone general, /hsg/, not in this general.

Information about these games, such as where to get them if they're not on steam, trailers, /egg/ conquered/hosted servers, and other shit can be found in this pad:

>centrifugal force to keep an atmosphere
Oh hold on. Yeah it seems like it, unless some magical electo-magnetic gravitrons are in play there. A quick visit to the Halopedia told me that Halo's also use centripetal force. One would have to assume that while the majority of the gas would stay inside the ring, some would inadvertently escape due to some particles just going to fast, I think.
It's probably a long shot, however, can anyone with any knowledge of fluid mechanics please explain if an atmosphere could be kept using centripetal force alone without any leakage?
>>
>>168802797
Uranium power.
>>
>>168802815
Atmospheric depletion is a natural phenomenon, but it usually happens mostly just to lighter particles on Earth. The absolute majority of all atmospheric hydrogen gets swept away by solar radiation. At that scale, and seeing as the air is getting compressed into the curved side walls, it would be kind of hard to maintain a proper pressure. Given the atmospheric pressure gradient on Earth, it would either have to spin at a considerably higher speed than 1G, use magnetic or electrostatic forces to keep the atmosphere grounded, or constantly replenish it, as a significant portion of the "stratosphere" would be up above the actual walls, and therefore at a risk of just "sliding out" along the exterior of the walls.

TL;DR: The atmosphere would slowly flow out the top of the walls and out the sides.

You should probably reduce the profile of that turret, or if you can't bring it down closer to the body, lower the turret ring all the way down until it touches the hull. That way you'll have two layers of armor and an air gap between any incoming shell and your turret's vital components.
>>
>>168811475
Don't worry, we all make mistakes.
I once learned that my megabombers had only a tiny hallway linking the front and the back of the ship. Surrounded by pressurized suspendium tanks.

>>168812071
The turret placement is only temporary, I built it separately from the hull and prefab'd it on afterwards to see how it looked. I might lower it down by one block once I'm done messing with it
The gun mechanism itself is actually fully contained in the turret housing, which will be protected by more angled shields
>>
>>168812668

What's the most effective ammo type for Advanced cannons in FtD? I'm thinking 152mm Shaped charges for anti naval and 23mm Sabots for AA

If you have the technology to create functional walking war machines, that technology can be applied to powered armor or already existing vehicles which would allow them to fill those roles.
>>168813009
Then it would be better for your unit to not be a target that is not only much taller than an average wheeled vehicle or soldier but also much slower than the vehicle.
>>168812889

By that logic, infantry is useless.
Not to mention that your sens of scale is completely off. Not only is that thing not taller than a HMMWV or Stryker (even WITHOUT the turret), the footprint is much narrower. In urban fighting that thing would be plenty useful, moreso than a lumbering humvee or pigfat MGS that carries a single fifty or AGL at most. In open/semi-open terrain, that thing would provide quite a bit of firepower to an infantry platoon.

You're still comparing it to a vehicle, by the way. Vehicles are fuckhuge.

It's still pretty fucking tall and I'm not sure about the thickness of it's armor but I'll wager that any modern AMR would punch a hole plenty deep enough to reach vital components. The size (and concordant capacity for carrying heavier weaponry) would make it a priority target if I had to fight it. I'm not convinced that the maintenance+fuel+lack of protection+size costs are balanced by the benefits of carrying heavier weapons.

You won't be fighting against AMRs. They are hardly ever issued. Your primary threat is short range rocket and grenade launchers, which can be defeated with compact ADS. The primary role of this thing would be defeating light vehicles, removing light cover and defeating threats taking cover in buildings.

If the systems were roughly familiar enough, the brain would adapt. There are many different experiments that have suggested this. Bionics etc.

I think one of the more interesting ones was a visual experiment where they used an apparatus to completely flip someones vision upside-down. The body brain eventually completely adapted to it.

I remember finding some video that talked about the adaptability of the brain, and the potential we have to acquire new senses, or something like that. Haven't been able to find it again since then, but it had some pretty cool stuff. There was even something about a guy who made a vest that had spots on it that would vibrate depending on information it received. He had his phone feeding it weather information, and after wearing it for long enough he basically just knew what the weather was going to be like without having to check anything.

Guns. And if that doesn't work, more guns.
>>
>>168831334
Guns and other ballistic weaponry are predominant in /egg/ games, and also designs behind several weapons are damn clever engineering

btw, I find it funny that rockets, which were predecessors of guns, are now replacing them on boards of ships, because they're much more controllable and damaging than guns can be.

I'm just here waiting. Waiting for something. I've been waiting so long I don't remember what I'm waiting for. I remember it was complicated and logical and implementable and honorable.

And I remember being given it, then having it taken away. I remember a disclaimer about things being subject to change, but no reason for change.

And I remember darkness. Silence. Like a black hole, an ancient void, a yawning chasm, a collapsing paradigm.

How do you split fleets in Airships?
>>

it's the future, guns could very well have so much firepower as to negate any benefit offered by armor
>>

I've been trying to figure that out. One of my fleets had a disabled ship in it and I couldn't move them to defend my capital. I lost the game because of that.
>>
>>168862537
This. Even today, stopped bullets can still do some decent damage tot he flesh underneath the armor. Firearms could easily develop to the point where armors would need to start proactively stopping or diverting projectiles rather than just retroactively taking the impact. Think energy shields, barriers, etc.

There's actually a scene early on with a fed ship 1-shotting a cruiser-looking thing with seemingly pretty dinky guns, so its not out of the question they're at a point in history where armor is useless, like just after the advent of high velocity firearms.

I've tried to do that mision that pits you against 3 dragon riders and a tower. I managd to kill one, but the others destroyed me.
Then the game tells me this: "Hint: It's basically impossible to stop dragon flame. Kill them before they can destroy you. Or find a way to evade them."

If you mean for the beta bullshit, the game is not feature completed, they are not folowing any software cycle standards, the beta was a PR move to try to win the indie game of the year, and looks like they failed.
But its still true, they dont give a shit about controls, not even a regular HOTAS (3 axis niga.. 3...), that will be one of the things that will finally kill it asides from the lack of focus on the netcode because its not the main point (explained by the marek himself in some interview) and the need to backpedal every shit they do because /r/spacengineers rage about it.

Their rage was the reason why planets came to existance, and why the entire development went into making them work properly so early that they forgot about the rest of isssues or core gameplay mechanics, thats where they lost the direction and marek started to do evaluations like he does now.
>play for 5 minutes
>see something he dosent like or something "cool" to add
>demand a change withing a month or 2
>development time and effort gets wasted in that instead of actual fixes
>comunity rage force them to revert its shit because it was a terrible idea
>more time and effort into remake stuff to please the "comunity"
>bug tickets gets delayed indefinitely because other shit is more important
>update fixes get half done, and they bring new problems into the table
>depending on the priority, they could be on the freezer for half a year (like something i reported in september 2016)
>people with modder-scripter rank decide if new people is worth to join or not, so its basically a circlejerk by now
>they have a voice in what to do up to some point, thats how you have 20 updates of the scripting and modapi instead of fixes on basic shit (bugs that they exist since 2+ years ago)
>they want to wall of scripting: the game, becuse failed codemonkeys without a job that needs to be pet by someone else
>they will force the gold because PR reasons despite being a broken piece of shit still

Forget it, spengos is dead from the inside, not even a good builder with a mountain of bugs and issues, needing a 4k machine to run at 60fps at 1080p, and depending of replicafags and the mod comunity.

>thief deadly shadows was released in 2004

If people care about the game, it will eventually turn out good, with or without the vertigo mariachi in charge.

It looks good, but it's not that great for the cost [about 30k]
It mostly relies on shields for defense so it chugs fuel while in combat. And if more than one of the shields does go down, especially the ones on the sides protecting the thruster pods, it'll probably be going down too

It might not be a total success, but it's at least a decent first attempt

only game in this general that is actually a game with a clear progression and a definite endgame.

it suffers from a lack of comfiness, since you're always the ship eve-style and there's no interior or anything like that and for some reason no matter where you are in the universe there's a constant stream of pirates after your butt, but it's also liberating since for the first time ever you can make a gigantic functioning ship in 10 seconds with 10 parts. scaling blocks are a wonder.

avorion is fragile but looks promising. definitely a buy if you like singleplayer games, i'd wait and see if it gets better when it comes to multiplayer.

from the depths isn't really going anywhere, and nick is too thick to realize what he's doing wrong, but nevertheless there's hundreds of hours to be had just fucking around with the different systems.

starmade is still roughly where it was 4 years ago and only NOW are they thinking of reworking the godawful power system, something that should have been done from the very start although their proposal is about as unintuitive and pants on head retarded as the old system was dull and tedious

skywanderers seems to be corneroids++, the game that everyone wanted, but there's no telling how good it ACTUALLY is until we have our hands on it. the dev actually mentioned he didn't like the idea of letting connected grids collide with eachother because it creates lag and prevents you from doing things like hiding doors in walls etc. definitely a unique approach to solving the problem that even the physicsless connected grids of starmade have to wrestle: CLANG

spengies is basically released already, keen gave up and i wouldn't give them any money

empyrion has some things going for it but if you don't enjoy hunger bars and rustlike multiplayer i'd stay away

machinecraft is free to play, and has the single most options for retardedly autistic builds out of any of the games here. it's basically comparable to a CAD program at this point, which turns people off.

I haven't really fucked with em. Let me give it to you this way. The actual block variety and scaling and shaping is some of the most robust I've seen. There is not anything special you need to do to make systems work though. You slap X volume of generator on and you have power. You slap X volume of shield gen on and you've got shields. The most complicated thing regarding systems is having enough power to run your shit, and dealing with weight/thruster placement. Thruster placement is probably the most complex thing in building but it's not hard to squeeze out those Rads/S if you're not a retard.

Does that help?
>>
Enjoying Factorio obsessively right now, and I've got a question.

Let's say I'm bussing gears because of their 2:1 iron compression property. Therefore to saturate a single belt of gears, I must pull two full belts' worth of iron plate. My bus' iron section is four belts, and I'd like it to have priority over other, later iron consumers.

So the question is: what would a two-lane priority splitter look like? That's to say, it should yield two packed belts of iron, and leave the rest balanced across four belts. I've been thinking about this for the past hour and a half and tbqh it's doing my head in a little.
>>
>>168927045
Abortion is a very different type of autism. The most basic ship construction without any aesthetics consists of slapping bigger and bigger sized block modules onto it to make it better. Since shields are pretty much mandatory to use unless you want to die to stray air, armoring things up is only really necessary early game. The core of the game consists of getting more materials, better turrets, more money and better modules on your way to the center. There is no programming, no moving anything. The game could be compared to an RPG, but instead of leveling up, you make your ship larger, and you get new, better gear that increases your dakka. However, building pretty ships is pretty satisfactory as the quasi-voxel based building system makes putting the shape you want rather easily. It terms of pure, objective autism it's lacking, however it's a very enjoyable /svgg/, maybe one of the better one until Dual Universe brings salvation to us all.
>>
>>168927681
Kind of. The most interesting thing I got out of that is >thruster placement matters
Does this mean if all of my thrust is port of my center of mass, I will spin clockwise?
>>
>>168928035
At the moment, you don't have to worry about Center of Thrust- BUT having thrusters farther away from Center of Mass will increase your Rad/s on Pitch/yaw/roll.

It's slightly arbitrary, but dev doesn't want to make it too complicated right now.
>>
>>168928374
Oh, neat, so maneuverability is directly affected by ship design? How is combat? Autotargeted everything that makes maneuverability a rather moot point or does dodging things actually help?

i think he just wants a clean slate where he can do whatever he wants without people bitching at him because they preferred something else. He said he wants to try out a new UI since the current FtD UI is pretty terrible. He doesn't want to do it in FtD because there's a shitton of existing UI that he'd have to port for what might not be an improvement at all(mixing is out of the question, that looks terrible)
>>
>>168928568
Yep. Different materials have different mass, and you need to counteract with thrusters and engines. Combat is fun, and allows for different strategies. Early on, I use hit and run tactics to take down stronger ships than me, but midgame I start building up a strong shield tank and ripping people up with close range weapons while all of their friends shoot at me.

Maneuverability is a lot more realistic on the recent beta patch, though, so you will drift a lot if you're not being careful. The retrograde burn is now almost a necessity for getting from A to B in the shortest amount of time.
>>
>>168928804
And I think the final questions, that I didn't even think of before looking at the store page: How does it run and can you have a fleet or at least snub fighters? I'm sure small simple ships are ggez, but how taxing are large, complicated structures? I assume physics calculations are rather limited so I can't imagine it's anywhere near as bad as games like Spengies.
>>
>>168929068
Yeah- Honestly hearing what he had to say about it made me not so concerned. Working on the same game for years is not a good way to stay fresh, and this way, FtD will still be improved by proxy.
>>
>>168929106
With setting turned quite down, multi-ship, explosions everywhere battles involving hueg ships on 60fps should be doable. Currently you can have multiple ships with AI captains you can order, but those are rather limited at the moment. Well, so is most of the AI, but that should improve as time goes on. There are also fighters you can launch from your hangars, but they suffer from the same problems. And somehow, the physics aren't that bad. The flight system is simplified Newtonian, same as Spengies. Each ship, station, block and asteroid has its own physics, and can be moved around with bumping. Currently, the collision model is optional, but it's very temperamental. While one time you might be able to harmlessly bounce off, another time it will take off half your ship. I would recommend turning it off if you don't want to lose 20 hours worth of a ship due to a tiny rock that barely touched it.

God damn, campaign is fucking hard. I got ass fucked within days on my first three attempts, then got an advantageous worldgen. Killing off the last faction took a ton of work and got really tedious at the end, trying to play whack-a-mole with existing stocks of $1,200 cannon destroyers and trying to keep those fleets from completely depleting. Really, really need to learn how to split fleets. There was a point I needed airship fleets to attack across water but my most powerful fleet was half tanks, so I had to unceremoniously sell off a bunch of landships. Sure I got a bunch of money to put into more airships, but it was disappointing. Tried a light APC. Results inconclusive.

Overall it was worth the $10 I spent on it. Stayed up way too late.

You can hook belts to the circuit network. Directly after the splitters, put red wires on the top two belts for the gears, set them read contents and hold. Then set the rest to be on only when the iron plates are greater than 13. Might take some jiggering.
>>
>>168930997
But what if the two belts aren't packed? Nevermind though, I figured it out: 4 cascading 2-belt priority splitters, twice, followed by the 4-to-4 balancer in your picture.

Looks hella ugly and maximalist and what-not, but works. First time messing with red wire too.

Are you saying that all consumers of gears will also consume iron plate, and is therefore better off making gears in situ? Because to me, having a fuckton of gear assemblers close to smelting makes sense where bussing copper wire doesn't, because of the 2:1 compression (where copper wire is less efficient than plate); but sparing the effort of pulling them off the bus would tilt the scales.

Again, why would you add another belt to your bus just for gears?
The things are used for three things basically; science, base building and engines, all of which have a low average demand.

You seem to be caught in the idea that pulling iron off the bus and inserting gear wheels in its stead will somehow increase the net throughput of iron.
I don't quite understand how you've reached that conclusion, and would like a more detailed explanation of how this works.
Further, you should outline very precisely what your limiting factors are (in terms of what you're optimizing throughput against), as this is currently vague.

Also, the material the turret is made from only affects what blocks it can be placed on. Iron turrets roll the same stats when you research them, and you can place them anywhere, instead of needing a high-level block for weapon mounting. The exception is salvaging and mining lasers, you should start with as high level material as possible, as those don't mine above their level without taking a big hit to their efficiency.

Read somewhere if you managed to launch your dumb ass out into space, all that'd really happen would be you'd turn into warm human jerky with all your water evaporated off because pressure is what keeps water a liquid and not a gas.

dear lord why. That equation is dreadful.

Why would you simulate heat transfer inside the hull? Then you have to know what's inside the hull and what the shape of the inside of the hull is.

Although it would be pretty simple to do 1-d heat transfer through a circuit of radiators and what not like pic related. The bulk of your cooling is going to be through your cooling system not through conduction. I don't understand why you would have multiple cooling loops or really anything more than what CHoDE has.

I mean I guess you could model coolant pipes getting fucked?

>Space is cold

no it isn't. Space is almost nothing, and the something that is there is often very high velocity particles. By Kinetic Theory, those particles must have very high temperature. So if you want to pick a "hot" or "cold" it's "hot". But the temperature your thing in space will be won't depend on that, it'll depend on it's emissivity - how good it soaks up and throws out IR light, to some degree on albedo (visible light) but that's pretty minor compared. A black object in orbit is the most extreme thing. In direct sunlight, it'll get to hundreds of degrees. In shade, it'll get into seriously low negative temperatures.

However emissivity works both ways as the name implies. As long as you can keep sunlight off of high emissivity surfaces, they'll spit out a lot of IR by "Radiation" taking energy away from the radiating surface as light. Making the thing in question cooler.

You often find different colours are used too. The ISS panels are white, this'll partly be down to keeping low albedo as it is difficult to keep out of the sun all the time. (you'll notice these are always faced as close to 90° as possible) there's also mirror surfaced panels with high emissivity, for the same reason. These are generally used more often than black panels.

The high heat conductivity of the panels part is wrong. The radiator panels need high emissivity. Behind them, that's where high conductivity is needed. Either one of two methods is used, bolt the thing making heat straight to the panel, or if that can't be done use heat pipes. If that really can't be done, pump coolant around. Coolant is super rare though. I'm only aware of the ISS, Space Shuttle, and a few nuclear radar satellites that used it.

The space is cold meme gets my back up can you tell

Because movies love this meme. Much like spacecraft engines always have to glow in movies even though plenty of satellites stay up without using an engine at all? Hell even a lot of Interplanetary satellites don't use an engine for anything except minor course corrections. (because it's far more effective just to slingshot off of the gravity of planets for course changes)

You don't explode in space either without a suit. It'll be the same as the problem high altitude pilots have. You get a few seconds of conciousness to try and do something about it, pass out, then have a few more seconds before your body runs out of oxygen entirely. If you attempted to hold your breath before getting exposed, you're already dead - your lungs just ruptured.

So todays lesson in space exposure, don't hold your breath. you'll live longer. fractionally.

>syncing litterally thousands of bits of shit over a network
You dont sync the position of every vertex
You sync changes done upon it
That's the whole benefit of synchronization based netcode
In SupComm 1 and 2 they did it like that i think, the netcode would send and receive orders for units, not their positions and movement.
So sometimes those games had desync problems when the game tried to give and unit an impossible order because it was dead in someone's game and alive in another.

I always think about the vacuum pulling on my eyeballs. You ever take the ink cartridge out of a pen and suck all the air out, and let the tube hang from your tongue? Imagine it was stuck to your eyeball instead, except it's the size of your whole eyeball, and someone's pulling on it. Meanwhile you feel the spit in the corners of your mouth boil until your teeth bond to the parched insides of your cheeks and your tongue swells to fill your mouth, and the only thing worse than what feels like icepicks in your ruptured eardrums is the burn of vaporizing vomit in your nasal passages, squeezed there by your futile struggles to keep your air in. Through all of that though, still foremost in your mind is the understanding that the building pressure in your ass is not a fart at all, but your own intestines threatening to prolapse if you let your clenched cheeks relax even a fraction.

Please remind yourself how sweating works.
The heat of vaporization for water (at 373.15 K) is 40.66 kJ/mol or 2257 kJ/kg.
For a human at 80 kg, of which 56 kg worth of water, meaning a loss of 126.4 MJ worth of heat just from evaporation alone once all that water is gone.
Assuming this heat is taken solely from the entire 80 kg of human, and assuming said human has a thermal capacity similar to water, we'd see their body temperature drop by about 380 C.
For reference, absolute zero is 0 K, liquid nitrogen is 77 K and normal body temperature is 310 K.
Needless to say, you'd end up very cold.

>pressure is what keeps water a liquid and not a gas
Nearly all liquids (and even a few solids) have positive vapor pressure, meaning there's an equilibrium between liquid and gas.
This vapor pressure is a function of temperature (higher temperature means higher vapor pressure), and when the vapor pressure exceeds the surrounding pressure, you'll see outright boiling.
So when you're saying "water boils at 100 C", the implied statement is really "water's vapor pressure at 100 C is 1 atm".
Of course, if the surrounding pressure for some reason drops (rupture of space suit), then boiling would also occur.

In short, it's a bit more complicated.

Small one (ship is just about 300 meters long). 5 sectors without tech upgrades. Personally, boosting the thrust of 330 m/s pleases me much more.

It is.
If the calculations needed any semblance of accuracy, I would've accounted for that.
For back of the envelope calculations such as those above, ignoring such details is perfectly acceptable, so long as you keep the inaccuracy in mind.
Given that I also set the human heat capacity to equal that of water, and ignored the gradual mass loss, I figured it'd be obvious that we're dealing with rough estimates.

Depending on the enemy, a whole volley of the missiles until they overheat is often enough.

They do 84% damage to hull so once the shield pops, a whole volley kills any enemy. The problem is piercing the shields; some enemies take three volleys (3 overheats)

I haven't entered "the ring" yet, so I know this amount of firepower isn't enough

It's nice because I have a 10.5 km range and the missiles home-in on whoever I have targeted, so I don't even need to be looking at my enemies to be killing them. I can fly around salvaging while I fire off my missiles

Speaking of fucking retarded creations, here's this thing I shitposted to /tg/ a few years ago. Here's what I had in a text file that was in the same folder.

"So I had this idea, the rules of water walking state you will hover 2 inches above water, and if you are partially submerged you will rise 60 feet per round. So, with the water walking ring and stream pointing at your feet, you could either constantly be rising so as to try and be 2 inches from the stream, or set it to geyser (20 foot long, 1 foot wide stream 30 gallons per round) and hopefully be considered partially submerged (Maybe being covered in the giant stream would count at submersion?) for the same effect.

What if you did very short stilts with jars attached so that your legs were submerged about a foot down?"

Shame that by the time you can reliably make it in decent quantities, anything that could be considered as a challenge sees a forced visit to the Astral Plane as a minor annoyance at best.

Good for eliminating swarms of weaker enemies, but a fireball or other wizard spells would be more cost-effective (unless there is some "protection from magic" enchantments involved)
