There are two types of stories: The hero is forced out of their comfort zone or a stranger comes into the town. Mysteries are always the latter: the detective comes in to a neighborhood and uncovers the truth at all costs. In Danganronpa V3, the beautiful detective character Saihara hates how whenever he solves a case, that means he is uncovering every dirty little secret of the community. Only the truth matters and that's why mysteries can function as a sociological tool.

But Umineko doesn't really do that. I honestly don't know what it wanted to be. You never really understand the whole cast. The denizens in Rokkenjima have their own backstories and whatever, but they aren't that important in Chiru. Even Battler, the goddamn protagonist, is a mystery because he is a badass dude and that's it.

The rules of the system are puzzling too. Red lines tell you only the truth and that's a neat take in how mystery rules work. But later on, more colored lines just "overcome" the red truth and that doesn't make sense in any context howsoever. The system in the game feels like the writer is just making shit up and doesn't try to make it easy to follow. Mysteries are very close to video games. Imagine playing Mario for the first time and getting the controls at level 1-1. But when you reach 5-1, you learn that not only you can jump and stomp enemies but you can also moonwalk and kill enemies that way too. There is nothing to clue you in that being Michael Jackson can kill enemies until that part. You would call it bad game design. Likewise, a mystery system like Umineko would be bad mystery design. You are given a premise and you expect the work to follow it through.

In Chiru, Umineko gives up its premise as a meta-mystery of sorts and becomes an escapist embrace for love. In the end of the game, it mocks mystery readers who only want to uncover the truth -- most mystery fans love the emotional scenes in mysteries -- and then has the characters murder them. Love is thus the only answer the game actually gives to a series of mysteries that is revealed to be "fictional" in its world. The original mystery is left forgotten -- though at that point, you would know who the murderers are but unsure how the hell they did it -- so the work can be propaganda for this delusional kind of love. Let's just say mysteries hate delusions and untruth, so this part of the game is very much not a mystery.

There's more to say, but Umineko in general rejects the characteristics of the genre. It would be weird to call it a mystery.

Back in the days of 85%, every Miyako bad end from other routes were pretty much considered the natural, good endings because it was the only way Miyako received the ending she deserved since her route translation was on hold indefinitely. Here's my take: DC3 canon says he is an extremely powerful mage. That means he has the ability use magic - and damn well. It's implied he's at least a rank 4+, enough to overshadow all the teachers and general rabble at Weather Vane in the protag's dream seeking.

But there's never any sign of it through the other Da Capos, aside from the immortality/lack of aging which 4 other characters share. There's opportunities where his magic could have aided so many people in crisis while he was present, but he stood back and did nothing. In fact, he pretends (?) to have no knowledge of magic at all.

He also has no known relatives in any of the canon. Name 1 other reoccuring DC character where they haven't mentioned their geneology, not even a parent. Because of that, I seriously doubt there are 3 descendants that are all perfectly identical.

Not only that, but there'd be a gap of 2 more Sugs between like 1990 and 2050 if they were just going to keep naming their kids who (always looked and acted the exact same) the same name. It's really unlikely and not like the DC writers to go that far in the shadows without hinting at it.

So Suginami is 1 person, at least 200+ years old. I think he has some sort of reason for never interfering in any events on any timeline. Maybe because of the true purpose of the Unofficial Newspaper Club or something as guardians of the timeline.

... It's been years since I saw that DC anime on that subject, though, and I'm not even sure it was cannon. I don't think so.

he's one of the most interesting characters in the Da Capo universe (both because of his fun character, and the mystery surrounding him). I'm surprised people don't talk about him more often.

Its probably because my taste is shit and I also read it during a bout of depression but I found the nonsense of it and mostly instead of the heroines (where I did like Akari and Maya best, and though I disliked Shizuru's route I cackled like a motherfucker at "Taa-shama") the side characters to be the main draw.

Akari is a tsundere done right imo; Sena's route and heroine I will admit looking back on it lacked literally everything; I didn't bother with Hinata's route because I have a severe dislike for Kouhai/Imouto type routes; Maya's spaghettilord antics and that her Dad's an ass, but a cool guy was nice; and Shizuru's route made little sense but I went with it because it had a moment or two.

I noticed a few translation errors myself (Amazingly enough since I'm nowhere near as nitpicky as I am now), but I've ended up learning that its just Yuzusoft. Their works aren't anything special but they don't try to be. There's going to always be plotholes and inconsistencies in a flimsy character-based moege, and its pretty much what you take from it.

I'll probably go back and re-read Noble Works since I'm not as stupid as I was a year ago, though probably still in a rickety state of mind. Also I think I had two or three embarrassment chokes in NW? I know I had more for Evangile, but that's a personal thing.

MG didn't butcher anything, the PC version of Himawari is a port of the Vita remake, and the remake is based on the latest release of the game, Pebble in the Sky, which was released for consoles, there's some stuff that the author rewrote for that version, because you can't get away with 15/16 years old drinking and having sex, or nudity of them.
So the changes are, no mentions of alcohol, even though it's very clear they're getting wasted,
no explicit sex or narration of it, though it's very clear the sex it's happening in a given scene,
and no nudity of course.

Here we are in 2016 and I'm left perturbed by the way the community has grown. Though my goal of bringing more titles to the west has been accomplished in a big way by a variety of companies and individuals, the fanbase is still content to simply sit around discussing the flavor of the week instead of venturing out of their comfort zone and exploring what's available to them. It's like we never left 2006, just with a slightly different set of games being hailed as the end-all, be-all of the medium by people who don't know any better now.
Unfortunately, I'm becoming more and more aware that my perspective on matters is irreconcilably distant from the western fanbase's. I care a great deal about eroge/VNs and am very personally invested in the subset of Japanese fiction that they represent; I went out of my way to learn the language just to further explore Japanese subculture and contemporary literature. Meanwhile, the western fanbase seems to just treat any Japanese media as an extension of anime or video games, just part of the same overall "fandom" if you will. To put it another way, I'm interested in the "canon" surrounding eroge, while people consuming translations are content to simply treat them as individual products.

Honestly, I shouldn't have even posted in here. The way I approach the medium as a whole and what I look for out of eroge/VNs are simply too far removed from the western fanbase's to have any sort of meaningful discourse with people using translations, and I accept that. But at the same time, as someone who helped build the community as it is today, I guess I'm unable to fully suppress my irritation at the way it hasn't developed into the ideal I imagined for it over the years.
