The answer I've come up with is two fold. Attacking vulnerabilities and Knight's Charge.

attacking vulnerabilities with 5* abilities is the best way for mages to build charge if they lack access to wrath or lifesiphon. Then, after the first bsb, the sentinel helps build charge from taking damage, and knight's charge helps with both of these.

FFVIII story is typical of almost all FF stories, in that you can tell they started writing each individual scenario first, then tried write an ending and overall story that tied it all together. It's why a lot of FF end games seems like such ass-pulls.

I think 8's story appears planned out just fine on a macro level. It feels more like they just went with things that sounded cool over things that made sense. Junction Machine Ellone is probably the best example of that. All Odine had to do is destroy the machine and all research on it, and the world is saved. Time Compression itself is another example, as it's never explained why Ultimecia needs to be at a certain point in the past to activate it. It's all just conveniences so they can reach the (admittedly really fucking cool) ending portion.
But there is proper foreshadowing in the game's assets and dialogue (Cid's dialogue early game, the Adel messages in Timber, "Edea"s dialogue). Not that that's a guarantee that it was planned out, but it certainly makes it feel that way to me.

As long as you're on a 4+ job panel, have a deck lvl 120+ and have at least one card whise the sicarius you're fighting is weak to, you should have no troubles with 2* battles.
If your job doesnt have a weakness advantage element you can go by with a 140lvl deck.
Just don't use cards of the same element as the boss.

Also on 2* battles you target the guard first, not the boss.

All that's really necesary is one player that can deplete yellow with high dmg attacks, and one that can deplete red bar fast. Anyone else is usually riding them.

So, you up for it?
Make sure to customize your mp deck before entering the arena.

It's up to you. I think clearing all the chapters should give you more than enough crystals to max more than 2 jobs, but I didn't really keep track. You'll probably get your first job card long before you're close to maxing the apprentice one, and early skill panel pages cost fewer crystals than the later ones, so I wouldn't worry too much about saving them.

Right now though he's hard to fit in because of his low relative attack and weak commands. He's topping out at around 360 attack compared to Firion and Zell hitting 440-450 without synergy.

Lack of equipment isn't too much of a hinderance. Sephiroth can easily overcome that because he can self-buff his attack to make up for lack of synergy.

Shadow's problem is that he has endark without any way to actually use it outside of his BSB and his kit is lacking. If he had access to Dark 4 (and RD Dark 5) he'd be a top-tier contender with the ability to do both mag buffing for ninja skills and attack buffing for combat.

Also, since you can drive certain elements to restore health to the whole party, using ability cards that make all your drawn element orbs to be of that element might be good too.

The only debarrier card I have is this black moogle I got during the event before I completely forgot about it until it went away, so I never got the debarrierga or debravega cards unfortunately. Yes, each sicarius has a debuff it's completely immune to. Shiva I think it's bio, Odin I think is slow, and the other one I don't remember.
Unguard is meh, not as good as debarrier, Ifrit is the only one who it doesn't work against tho.
Did you at least get 2 of the moogle cards that you use to augment it to its -ga version? You could do that and just ability ticket max fusion it.

Depending on whichjob panels you have unlocked, there are some panels which have some abilities that will grant you the ability to restore health when you drive a certain element the same way as when you drive life orbs.
