Righto.

A good chuck of the performance at the moment goes on the ambient occlusion, which I force on because tracks currently have no shading. Hopefully after some baked shadows it'll look fine without it.

Would you mind (or anyone with an older PC) going to the menu, opening the console (with `, the key next to 1) and copy pasting this whole line:
>stat fps | t.maxfps 500 | scalability 0 | r.ambientocclusionlevels 0
It'll make it look terrible, but I'd like to know if it becomes more playable. Your framerate should pop up on the right.

Alternatively

will attempt to find a good setting

1/3

Finally finished first pass of art update for MoGiSho (Moth Girl Shooter) my eyes burn because I have been going at this for 4-5 days solid on 3 hours of sleep and a ton of caffeine....

The Moth Dust (bomb) animation is still placeholder from the prototype, the progress for the first stage is about 50% done and the art for the stage is about 70% done. There is another parallax background the stage switches to after the mid boss (the encounter at the end of the webm) which is the city proper.

I feel like I am right on the edge of burning out because I pressed myself pretty hard to do this in a few days so I am going to get back to level layout and mechanics progress before I touch art again. I have no clue what I am going to do about music since the last time I even attempted to compose anything was about 15 years ago but I will do my best. Also I need to find some female voices for reaction sound effects like a yandere laugh during the moth dust ability (Violet Hollow Laughter).

Forgive the video quality, I am still learning how to record and convert properly. Two still screens will follow so you can see what it looks like without the messed up artifacts/noise.

Aye tracksdev, I was the guy who made the multi-track drifting fan-art, played the game and loved it.
One question: I accidentally did something (don't know how) and my cursor separated from the tracks and became the white circle thingy from the flying mode, but I couldn't move up or down and could only delete track pieces with the right click and switch to the train cam. I had to restart the game and only then the flying/building modes toggled properly. You might wanna check out what's wrong.

>>
>>168436491
A PC game where regular updates were not seen as a bad thing. You can still play current games on high settings and good framerates with hardware that is half a decade old.

And when you convert 3D models to sprites, it really doesn't matter whether you have 2 perspectives or 16. Bastion did the same.
>>
>>168437204
Out of 150 IPs per thread there is less than a handful of really dedicated shitposters and maybe a dozen that fall for it, perpetuating the whole thing.

It's funny because in America we don't just let any retard wander in off the street and make our laws. You have to be accredited.

For a gamedev it's as easy as putting your game in your itch.io account. Don't have a game? Then you aren't really ready to represent game devs.

why is this a problem though? everyone can vote even if they don't make games. that makes it fun, other wise the people who make games are just choosing what games they want to make... and also like 10 people at most will vote which leads to a shitty poll

the whole reason the poll went to shit is because of the spamming-bot that rigged the poll and made stupid shit win. if you need an itch.io account then you can't spam votes, one vote per person

If that's what you call stating reality as it is. I'm sure you see people telling the truth as some kind of ideological enemy. It's easy to appear as if you are controlling the narrative when others share your opinion, like moving jam votes to itch.io.

No need to do that with the current jam though as it appears it will be COPS

In the collectathon platformer mechanics realm:
long fall damage now works. Falling (at a certain speed) for too long starts an inescapable fall animation (no jumping, attacking, etc., out of it) and triggers a stunned landing. Damage taken is proportional to how long the fall is.

As a bonus, the landing animation can be recycled for attacks which send Dixie flying.

In the cuhrayzee brawler mechanics realm:
attacks can now specify that they will "Use Stored Attack" when listening for an input. Every time an input listen window is triggered, the attack it WOULD play if that input was triggered is stored. If an animation that wants to Use Stored Attack is then triggered, when it hears an input it will dynamically select whatever animation was queued when it was triggered.

The net effect of this is that some attacks (right now, the double-jump and backflip, but also crouch attacks and a couple other situational command specials) which can be arbitrarily triggered at any point mid-combo will now no longer interrupt that combo, but will instead remember where it was and resume there.

This logic will probably be expanded a bit further when I reimplement Block Stocking, since I still love that mechanic

As an aside, I'm replaying Banjo Tooie and I'm wondering: were the warp-pad and warp-tunnel mechanics worth implementing here? Or is it one of those things where if it's worthwhile to teleport around the level, the level is too big and pointless to begin with?

I want to do a game where you control a merchant and you go from town to town buying merchandise. You buy low and you sell high.

Basically, mount and blade without the combat, maybe a bit of spice and wolf in there.

I need to find a small game-loop to have while you travel from town to town, preferably not combat-related. Any ideas?

So seriously, r8 my game idea.
>Dungeon Crawling tactical RPG
>Control a group of adventurers going through a dungeon

>Very brutal difficulty, get hit once injuried twice die, characters don't come back once killed
>Risk vs reward style game; once you have some treasure you have to debate stopping or carrying on

Make a game then and put it in your itch.io account then you will have a voice. Should anons who can't play any instruments go to /mu/ and start attempting control over group activities there? Would enacting easy common sense solutions to prevent this be construed as censorship? Things to ponder.

Loli has never been censored. It loses every poll and is only boosted by VPN attacks which stink and are obvious and we all watch them and then move on with the real options like we already have.

Moving jam votes to itch.io instead of poal.me or strawpoll is the future. AGDEXIT now.

That's actually a pretty fair point. It does seem like common sense and this argument appeals very well to my moral beliefs too. If you don't contribute to society or a group in any meaningful way then your opinion on the future of that group or society is basically negligible imho.

That's based on the assumption that loli really has never been censored.

Your argument checks out though. Its like homeless, non-tax paying, illegal, criminals, people to stupid/lazy/insane to get ID or function as normal citizens should not be able to vote in elections. They're opinion shouldn't matter because they don't assist the country in any way, they're literal drains on humanity, parasites.

Would probably have more fun being able to perform a killer bee from 2000 feet high than I would having to worry about fall damage (unless you're going to go the SM64 "groundpounds negate fall damage" route and make it so that a normal fall is damaging but a 2000 ft. killer bee kick isn't).

Yeah, unless you can put all your sprites in the same sheet (which is harder the more colours you have, of course) you're much better off doing it programmatically. Then you're also open to animating the colour and other effects that wouldn't be possible with separate graphics, and it save you some offline work.

In C# can bytes and shorts do math or are they converted to ints?

Speaking of style alone, what you have is fine and very standard.
Depending on your language there may be a clamp function [so speed = Math.clamp(speed+accel, 0, maxspeed)], but it's not even a upgrade in clarity really.

Oh, and specifically the issue with how you're doing it is that the object is likely to overshoot the target, then overshoot back the other way, and jitter in place as the process repeats.
>>
>>168448020
Why don't you try it? I'm pretty sure they'd get converted but why are you even asking this, it takes one line to check..

Unless you're working with library functions that specifically use bytes and shorts, like low-level color work, you should never have a use for these types anyway. Stick to ints, premature optimization is the root of all evil.

On the CPU, all integers are processed as words. So a byte will be converted to a word, then back transparently. Compilers can sometimes "vectorize" multiple operations on smaller types into fewer operations on larger types.

In terms of you writing code, however, the result of a byte added to a byte will be a byte.

It's still a terrible waste of time
Adopt good encapsulation practices and instead of wasting an hour reading months-old code, you have a simple abstraction layer to work with which can be understood in a couple of minutes
Leaving comments for occasional debugging while it's still fresh in your head is also smart
>>
>>168449268
It's just that I'm a complete novice at coding so I just code the way I understand how it works. Then as I go along and learn a new way of doing something more efficiently, I see that old code and wonder how I even got it to work. And the problem with changing that old code is that it might affect something else I coded somewhere else like another event or object.

I'm always asking myself if I should refactor everything while it's still relatively early in development, or if I should just buckle down and make the game and then go back and fix things. Result is that I haven't touched the game in at least 6 months, probably more.

Unity has a function called Look At which you could use though it might give you some stuttering movement. Once you have the lock on working it should be easy to use the player/lock target positions to figure out relative strafe directions.

I'd probably cleanly separate the camera/movement logic for the free roam and the lock on and give it two states that toggle between the two.

Nope, I mean the 2nd and 3rd jumps.

Look at the moment when velocity.y suddenly inverts at the top of the jump.

It should be smooth, but it suddenly flips.
I assume that when you press the up arrow you jump, and when you press the down arrow there's a sudden velocity down. Make this transition smoother.

Unless of course, this feels good when you're playing it. But as a spectator watching it, it feels wrong.

Nobody will though, because it's technically inferior to other programs and has a terrible workflow and language. Anybody serious about making a commercial product with an engine is using GM:S, UE4 or Unity. Godot is strictly for dabbling hobbiests and even they don't dabble long, as evidenced by the zero completed noteworthy games from AGDG and the godot community in general.

Why isn't my sword adding to my inventory when I click it?

Also, why are arrays so weird to set up in GM?
Normally I'd just say var foo = [] or something similar in another language;

But GML wants me to assign values right away it seems.

Here's the code for the obj_swords step event
if (place_meeting(mouse_x, mouse_y, obj_sword) && mouse_check_button_pressed(mb_left)) {
global.inventory[0] = "Sword";

You can be a lot more forgiving with networking if you handle each player's collision, damage taken, damage done etc. on their own client and tell server what happened. Though this opens up ways for a lot easier cheating so it is up to you and depends a lot on the type of game you're making.

For something like RoR which you play COOP and in small groups it wouldn't matter that much if the game was vulnerable to cheating as long as they can't compromise other players' files.
>>
>>168460286
there's really no way for us to know why this isn't working from just this
it could be the click event not firing, it could be the inventory not adding properly, it could be your "check what's in the inventory" function isn't reading it right

I'm not all that familiar with GML and I've only built small choppy platformers, so this is my first time building an inventory system. Right now I'm just trying to get simple output of the inventory array and object grabbing.

Here's the draw event for the obj_inventory, the obj_inventory object is created when I press shift and the inventory is a global array declared in the obj_players create event.

for(i = 0; i < array_length_1d(global.inventory); i++) {
if(global.inventory[i] = 0){
draw_text_colour(obj_player.x - 100, obj_player.y - 30, "Your inventory is Empty...", c_black, c_black, c_black, c_black, 1);
}
else {
draw_text_colour(obj_player.x - 100, obj_player.y - 30, "You have: " + global.inventory[i] + " ", c_black, c_black, c_black, c_black, 1);
}

>>
>>168460286
That first bit (place_meeting) checks for a collision with an instance of obj_sword. If you have that in the step event of the sword, then you've asked your sword to essentially move to the mouse coordinates and check for a collision with a sword. The sword isn't colliding with a sword, so it returns false.

The function can be overloaded with 'all' or 'other' to specify whether you want it to be self inclusive or not. You'd still have problems in cases where, given multiple swords, one being clicked would return true for all of them.

An easy check would be to compare the swords xy to the mouses ala
if mouse_check_button_pressed(mb_left) && abs(x-mouse_x) < 10 && abs(y-mouse_y) < 10 where 10 is some closeness threshold value.
>>
>>168461254
reading this comment back i realise it might be completely unhelpful, so

>>168461035

the line:

if (global.inventory[i] = 0)

is setting global inventory i to zero, and should probably read:

if (global.inventory[i] == 0)

so it checks the value instead
with just = it's setting the value to 0 every time, which works, which means it evaluates to true (roughly), which means that's the code that executes every time
>>
>>168461506

Like maybe a really low percentage to run into one of the dudes you lied to later on and he calls you out for it and robs you or something. >think of your very favorite video game that has a plot (even if the plot can be summed up in one sentence)
>bring its story down to its simplest core points
>figure out how you could tell that same basic story with an entirely different style of gameplay

Except for the fact that Godot preforms better than GM:S, has a better workflow than GM:S, which workflow is more of a personal preference anyways. Godot also has more features than GM:S. GM:S has a made up language just as Godot does, so I don't see why language would matter. The truth is Godot is simply superior than GM:S. Unity is a mess, but people use it regardless. Unreal is a better engine but its focus is on 3D games with good graphics, something that indies don't usually make.

The intent is to have it so that if players want to get in good damage they have to get in close for the initial hitbox of the swing, if they want to be safe they can fight with the weapon arc at a bit of a distance instead. Weapons have different swings and arcs depending on the type

If you think the fact that a very simple story idea is used as part of the idea generation project means a game conceived of in the way I described would necessarily be a story-based game, you're also mistaken.

Yesterday, I resolved to stop messing around in Blender and just get some basic features working. Today, I spent my time getting the curtain to react when the ball hits it.

The path from nodev is truly a treacherous one.

I literally described aptitude, the difference is whether its natural aptitude or developed aptitude.

Talent describes natural aptitude and it essentially says if someone with talent competes with someone that doesn't have talent then the person without talent can literally never catch up, its not physically possible, there is no scenario in the infinite possibilities in the universe where the person without talent can become better at something than someone with talent so you shouldn't even try to compete. That type of thinking is wrong, it isn't correct, and you can catch up.

When you posted the un-animated model you mentioned the feelers on the womb/egg tending to it. Obviously it all depends on how much time you want to spend on it, but I think it'd look much better if the tentacles had a semi-sentient arhythmic stroking of the womb, rather than the pulsing you've got going now.

Theonian here,

I went down to the beach one winter morning and found huge flakes of ice with almost perfectly circular holes in them. They were spaced evenly.
In the water edge, semi-transparent blobs of roughly the same shape and size as the holes were being washed back and forth by the waves. They were soft and looked a bit like some sort of fish eggs.
Felt pretty X-files.

Bubbles that big?
Also, how do you explain the egg-like things in the water?

Regret not taking better images of it. There were huge flakes with these weird holes. I've never seen it before.
I suppose it must have been stones lying on top of the ice and being warmed by the sun so the melted through, or something, but it was weird.

The point isn't to make a game that tells a story. It was never about the story. The point is just that if you consider the very basics of almost any story, you find someone struggling to DO something. Since a game takes the form of a struggle to do something as well, you can use that as inspiration for the type of challenge you might want to present to your player.

That's it.

Quick question for the thread incase anyone has been in my situation before.
I am currently working on a turn based rpg reminiscent of early SMT games, dungeons would be viewed from a first person perspective, but then it will switch to a separate format for the actual combat.
I was wondering if there are any resources for going about implementing this system, and what the best program would be to design a game like this (or if I would have to make one from scratch)

If you meant engine, then anything can do it. I'd suggest Unity assuming you're comfortable with C#.
