The thread is dedicated to all games about building machines and systems out of blocks, in space or otherwise. Also, all these games are ded. Only ded games may join, otherwise they must have their own thread.

WebM for physicians:
>gitgud.io/nixx/WebMConverter.git

List of currently known and vaguely not as dead /egg/ games (this list is not fully inclusive and if you think a game might belong here, feel free to ask):
>Algodoo
>Avorion
>Besiege
>Chode - Children of Ded Earf
>Empyrion - Galactic Survival
>Factorio
>From the Depths
>Homebrew - Vehicle Sandbox
>Infinifactory
>KOHCTPYKTOP: Engineer of the People
>Machinecraft
>REM
>Robocraft
>Robot Arena 2
>Scrap Mechanic
>SHENZEN I/O
>Space Engineers
>StarMade

Games that are definitely not /egg/:
>Minecraft
>The general that quite literally cannot be named. The Mexican scam artist one. With the shitposters. Fuck off.
>Hearthstone, found in the hearthstone general, /hsg/, not in this general.

Information about these games, such as where to get them if they're not on steam, trailers, /egg/ conquered/hosted servers, and other shit can be found in this pad:

Man why do all these spaceship games only give you piddly little machineguns and rockets? I mean shit, Avorion looks like it'd be perfect for giant spinal railguns or colossal broadside banks of missiles/lasers, but nope it's all tiny turrets.

Unless there's some convoluted way to get block-sized weapons that I missed.

Copy pasta-ing from old bread.

Just finished the hull of my new airship. 20 guns in 4 turrets firing pen-depth 1018mm APS rounds.

Need to build turret emplacements for secondaries, though. I'm currently thinking a pair of CIWS turrets per side, as well as a couple of small rapid fire guns to swat squirrels.

I think the front looks kind of weird, I tried to make a trireme style front but it clashes with the sci fi looking rear.

Opinions?

Starmade and From the Depths are the only games that lets you build totally custom weapons.

You can just keep adding more and more blocks to the guns to make them stronger and stronger, but then because its totally custom build guns and turrets, you also have to armor them and build the joints in the turret and everything else yourself.

And in both cases it results in people just making whatever over powered as fuck weapons can be made.
>>
>>168262986
Starmade, From The Depths, Children of a Dead Earth, Besiege. Basically anything that doesn't give you total freedom. The challenge will get you skilled enough to have fun without a purpose.

What is the most /egg/ tank? I vote the Tiger Porsche.
>>
>>168263350
I see nothing actually wrong with it.
Heck, if Chode manages to fix the last kinks in the integrator and someone successfully transplant the everything into some kind of RTS/grand strategy game the whole thing effectively balance itself since the most powerful guns/lasers/ships would, most likely, require higher quality materials and processes.
At that point you go for what is cost effective since if it takes you 50 years and a Forge World to refine the various stuff at the required purity and machine it to the exact tolerances you'd end up being swarmed by not as individually powerful yet much faster and cheaper to make crafts

I tried warping for the first time, whatever it's called. I selected some coordinates in my map, let my navigation computer calculate, and jumped.

Every since then, my ship has been zero energy, and when i go to ship build screen and look at my stats, my energy is now WAY out of wack. I used to be making surplus energy, but now my ship is consuming twice as much as it makes.

I tried exiting and reloading my world and it's still stuck like this. I've gone through some warp portals too. Is there something that's sucking away all my energy constantly?
>>
>>168264050
sure it's not just your warp drive recharging?

The obvious solution being tolerances in the material, instead of making all material magic unbreakable perfectly manufactured nonsense. Too bad that would probably drive away normies even more so.

Perhaps if the breach just had a chance of blowing up that exponentially grew based on pressure required to fire the weapon. 0.001% to start, 100% on the retarded end of the scale.

>>168263814
This anon sort of gets it.
>>
>>168263350

Its why I want a game that give you all the basic weapon that are properly balanced by the devs/modders/whoever the fuck, and then people can take thos epremade weapons and encase them in blocks in their ships to make ship weapons, or build those premade weapons into customs built turrets.

Like say I have a "small railgun" weapon thats 1x1x5 blocks, and I can then take that an put it on my ship or stick it on a turret. And then theres the "medium railgun" thats 2x2x10, and the "large railgun" thats 4x4x15, with each larger one doing more damage and drawing more power.

On it, anon.

Specifically, pre-made weapons that you mount on custom turrets with custom feed systems.

Is there a way to quickly swap the turrets on my ship?

It's kinda annoying. I just landed in an area with lots of ore and I want to mine it, so I want to swap out most of my guns for mining lasers but that means I need to go into build mode, take off the turrets, put on the lasers, swap the system upgrades etc...

is there a fast way to do this or should i just not be doing this?

Kidding, that shit is easy. You don't actually use your email as your username, you set a custom name when you make the account that can be changed. LAN won't be a thing we can just toss in instantly, given we're using Photon, but its not impossible.

First ones are from basic
>night driving training
>waiting in the dismount seat, trying to catch some sleep because last in line to drive
>current guy gets done
>he forgets to put on the parking brake (m3's don't have actual brakes)
>we stopped on a slope to change out drivers
>suddenly, we're moving backwards
>with both the old driver and new one still on top of the m3
>latch shut closed and neither guy can't get it open
>had to throw myself into the driver's hole just to get the brake on
>ripped pants leg from thigh down do to bolts and stuff
>was 3 meters from a 70% grade slope
It was a A2 variant. The night vision optics for the driver had to be manually mounted. The mount was so old and worn, any slight bump would cause it to fall on your dick. A3 had integrated NV.

A week or so later (basic was ten years ago for me, so shit's a bit fuzzy).
>training to fire the main gun on m3
>my turn to shoot
>fired and hit the hinge of the target
>target goes down for a split second
>it suddenly goes up
>target flies off it's hinges
>somehow started a fire

My first deployment was the only deployment were we took our M3's with us.
>platoon day off from mission
>had to do inventory on m3
>included main gun, which had it's s/n on the non exposed side of the receiver
>mid day, have ate yet and woken up to do this (been running night ops for months now)
>alone because we parked our vehicles in between troop tac and chu's
>did arm and upper body burn out the night prior
>start to disassemble the gun
>hand slipped
>suddenly pinned in between the upper receiver and gun mount
>been sweating in 120+ temp
>65lbs of metal on fore arm
>turret space is smaller than a portashitter, so leverage is non existent
>stuck in there for an hour before sweated enough to slip out
>literally thought i was going to die from heat stroke/dehydration
Downed 8 liter of water in an hour just to stave off the cramps.

>towards the end of deployment
>we get a bunch of new dicks
>get promoted to head dismount (sleep all mission in the back of brads basically)
>sleeping peacefully
>suddenly end up in drivers hole
>sandwiched between driver's seat and medic
>retard drove us down a 80 slope
>front end hits the bottom at around 20 mph
>almost flips forward
>luckily gunner had the turret facing to the side, so no damage tot he gun
>either the medic or myself took out the rear driver display
everyone was concussed

Prior to my first deployment:
>doing yearly three week field training
>get on everyone's case to organize heir bags and shit because live rounds and grenades (crew members have authority over dismounts basically)
>no one listens
>go out on 'mission'
>have to drop ramp to kick out dismounts and raise it
>some one knocks over someone's bag
>had live smoke grenade in it
>suddenly fire
>everyone's shit is now fire in the back
>first time anyone had to use the internal fire exhaust system in the troop anything that was not burned was dyed red due to smoke grenade
>never got my assault bag replaced in all my 6 years in

>at ntc
>first mission, up for 24+ hours
>3 am, foot of the rocky mountains, over looking las vagas practically
>driving all day/night
>suddenly short stop
>must have been 2 minutes in before all 5 of us fell asleep
>15 mins passed with the rest of the troop trying to hail us on comms
>the co decides to climb up on the hull
>I hear my name and I floor it for what ever reason
>with the co still on the top

So the multiplayer testing we did went way fucking better than we thought it would, and we'll be moving forward with what we've built over the last few days instead of ripping it out and continuing with what we were doing. Video of some funny shit that happened soonish.

Would anyone be interested in adding in suggestions to this first draft of the tech/progression tree of REM in pic related? Keep in mind multi-grid, custom turrets are confirmed for all tiers. Totally custom weapons are not a thing we're doing. Ever. Custom rooms with custom rules are planned down the road. Custom servers and LAN will require some reworking but won't be impossible. Planned for when the game is feature complete.

Everything here is of course subject to change, but nothing written is out of our ability or reach. Most of this stuff we've been planning forever. Initial ground stuff released will be "Tier 1". Initial multiplayer will be invite only, due to our server implementation only allowing 100 concurrent players. We could have a gorillion player accounts that could log in individually at any given time, but only 100 at once. Also worth noting we're going to be testing 6dof a bit more to start with as its by far the most taxing and difficult to sync properly. Get that good and ground is easy.

This number (100) is temporary until we start actually making some money for our work, as we'll need to pay a monthly fee for the servers over the single fee we paid for 100 slots. Can't make other people do it for free.

Players in an individual match are technically speaking unlimited, but practically speaking somewhere around 16-ish. Probably. Further testing is required. The hard cap is the limited bandwidth, which increases exponentially with every player added.

Thanks for reading the blogpost.

>how hard is it to go full dieselpunk
Your base constantly consumes coal; remember that every 4 MW means one piece of coal per second, and stone furnaces need about one piece of coal for every copper/iron plate.
What it means is that you must frequently acquire more coal, lest your entire factory shuts down from a coal shortage.
I believe it'll also be somewhat more difficult to remove ayy, compared to simply spamming laser turrets with personal roboport.

>Can an oil derrick with speed modules even produce enough oil to power its own speed modules?
Without any modules, a single pumpjack would produce a net 0.8MW when accounting for power consumption in refineries and chemical plants and efficiency loss in boilers.
Keeping this in mind, it should be fairly obvious that more modules means more power.
>>
>>168289727
I think you have a bunch of operational components (adders, xor, and the like) and you use a pair of multiplexers to route the two inputs to the correct component, if you use a clock (and buffers?) you can synchronize the whole thing.

Pretty much you should have 4 inputs (Register 1, Register 2, Clock, Operation) and one output (Result)

This is from one that knows jack about shit tho
>>
>>168302770
>Totally custom weapons are not a thing we're doing. Ever.

Will you make the implementation lass enough that it can be eventually modded in?
>>
>>168302965
Is the constant pressure to expand too much? would dieselpunk be more viable on rich deposit maps?
>>
>>168279168
Find a high tech level research station, go back to the edge of the galaxy and make a few hundred turrets for as cheap as possible. You want the highest rarity, just use as few components as possible. Bring them back to the core and research them into oranges, then research the worst ones into purples. Equip them and farm the boss. Repeat.
>>
>>168304069
Probably. You'll need to start on coal anyway, unless you shove in the quick start mod and add a few pumps and basic oil industry.
I'd be interested in an oil-centered modpack, though. Just an ever-expanding industry of fire.

I'm doing something like that. No laser turrets, solar panels or logibots, mainly to get the achievements. I've got a proper defense set up and I'm building oil stuff now, but turret creeping is hard with gun turrets.
Also I'm about to run out of iron. Closest vein is covered with big worms, and gun turrets do jack shit against them. Hopefully I can get a tank before blue biters start showing up.

For a computer-science-related games, yes. But this is not really an engineering matter, it's science and math.
>"Block-based engineering-related video games are better than snap-fit engineering-related video games."
What do you exactly mean by this? Snap-fit as in "less freedom of choise"? If so; The more freedom of choise/complexity, the better.
>"Stress and breakage simulations have no place in an engineering-related video game."
They do have a place in e-r-games. Those aspects are essential for mechanical engineering. And mechanical engineering is the root of all engineering. Well, but nowadays they have to learn a lot about programming and some electronics too.

Battleships Forever doesn't really fit, because you get to tweak every little bit of your ship with no limit. You can easily make a ship that is overpowered enough to delete everything on the map instantly, and it's mostly for creative shipmaking and sperging on custom factions and things you'll never get to play with because the game is DEAD.

The core game is just an action RTS and wouldn't fit into the general whatsoever, it's only in a grey zone because of the editor.

in spirit we all know it fits though

Honestly? Stick with your guns. You've got a little 6DOF space shooter first game project, make that first and make the game proper. Then make the tonk game as a separate one or some kind of future expansion.

I'd rather see REM become an actual game than die to feature creep because one or two anons scream for tonks.

But how would you make a game out of it?

Aside from metallurgy I'd like to see a game that does materials processing right. In most games we have magical ore processors, just throw one or two ores together and materials magically pop out. Ideally one would have to beneficiate rock to get minerals, break up and separate these minerals and then chemically process them into materials. Oh yeah and having the whole process be mass conservative, so you'd have to deal with waste.

Until they do something about this, you can move items from the train into a chest that is on the circuit network and then move them back again later.

We use lasers because it's cheaper, faster and easier to place power lines than making ammo and a supply line AND making a power line for inserting said ammo into turrets.
Also lasers do more damage.

Nah. Gun turrets are too good. Plus, I've already done all the research for gun turrets and firearms. >how the fuck do pipes and pumps work in factorio?
Liquid goes from more full pipe segment to less full pipe segment.
The fill level of a pipe is also referred to as pressure - meaning liquids behave similar to what they do in real life.
Pumps transfer from the suction side to the pressure side at a maximum rate of 30 units/s.

>can i just make a long ass pipe instead of messing with trains or belts?
See below.

>apparently speed drops to 30 liquids/tick but since each pump gives ~0.3 liquids/tick i'd need 100 pumps to ever reach the limit without pumps and then i could just make a parallel pipe instead?

Assuming maximum upgrades, a single gun turret dishes out more damage than a laser turret.
Remember that gun turrets have three different incremental upgrades that affect their DPS (firing speed, bullet damage, turret damage), whereas laser turrets only have two.

>>168404445
>>168403996
Assuming your resource bases only output one resource each, you could just reserve a few "resupply" slots in the normal wagons.
A cargo wagon would then hold a small number of repair packs, walls, turrets, magazines and what not, while the remaining inventory would be reserved for the base's intended output.
You don't need to use the circuit network at all, just a lot of filter inserters.

This brings to mind Ring Runner (which may have been mentioned a few times over the last ten threads).
Like any space sci-fi setting, it needs a means of conquering the vast distances involved in space travel.
In RR, space travel is achieved by the use of an Anchor Drive, which effectively make the vessel stop. Completely.
Given that most of the universe is moving around rapidly, you'll be moving at a great relative velocity by using the Anchor Drive.

In order to facilitate such travels, lanes in the universe have been almost completely cleaned of any material. Think of empty the bands in Saturn's Rings. Don't ask me how travel between lanes is accomplished.
Considering the velocities involved, a collision between two modern cars would result in an energy release around the scale of a nuclear blast, meaning these lanes are absolutely necessary to reduce traffic accidents.
Unsurprisingly, the Anchor Drive has also been weaponized. Instead of sending bullets flying towards an enemy, the projectiles are simply "anchored", wreaking havoc on anyone downspin of the weapon.
It's somewhat more limited in use than a typical projectile weapon (because it can only fire in one direction), but the destructive potential is unmatched.

And considering that most stations would need to be 'boosted', since almost all orbits decay after a while, especially ones around atmospheric objects which can produce drag against your stupidly huge solar arrays.
which is why the ISS goes into "hybrid night glider" mode or whatever it's called, rotating the solar arrays to be parallel with the Earth or angling them whichever way to produce lift when it's night time, and just tracking the sun when they're on the day side. It reduces the drag by over 30% and saves them on reboosting.

>>
>>168410025
Lasers also start firing faster. I think. What matters with guns isn't the damage - since you can stack up fifty of them and kill basically anything - but the range. With a turret, a spitter can start damaging your walls or turrets before it's even engaged by the turrets, but with lasers it usually doesn't get off even one shot.

>The International Xenology Report Quarters (IXRQ) was a network covertly run by several international bodies in Russia & Europe. The exact location was never known, and communication was primarily in the form of unique encryptions via satellite networks, sometimes being music or strings of repetitive phrases. Like that of the old number stations after the Cold War, some of the recordings were considered to be quite strange and unsettling. The focus of the IXRQ network was real time interception of extraterrestrial signals, and communication between spies. IXRQ was said to have ran from 1982 until June of 1998. Preceding the closure of the network, there were several leaks causing public controversy. Many deemed the organisation to be fictional or conspiratorial due to the nature of the information. The leaks were several encrypted audio files recorded from the network, which were being broadcasted sometimes for days. The decryption, arguably entirely speculative, resulted in strings of odd coordinate-like number and letter sequences. According to navigation experts, the coordinates suggested that they were not geographically based on earth, leading to far fetched conspiracies about the origin of this information and the secrecy surrounding it. There was strong evidence to suggest that a man,'John Titor', later to be labelled a 'time traveller', was coincidentally heavily involved with the organisation, as IXRQ were said to be behind the design and development of communication technology which allowed them to connect with other 'timelines' or 'dimensions'.
>>
>>168420141
>Within a few months of the leak in 1998, most traces of IXRQ were removed online. However, It is rumoured that the organisation are still active today and using acoustic means of communication, typically being in the form of repetitive electronic music, which serves as easy access and ability to be shrouded in online databases. The purpose or function of these broadcasts is not understood, but it is thought that the organisation now communicates in a network that is entirely out in the open in our society.

>Flaws were observed in Titor's stories, and none of the specific events he predicted actually occurred. This led to the general conclusion that his story was an elaborate hoax. A 2009 investigation suggested that Titor was likely the creation of Larry Haber, a Florida entertainment lawyer, along with his brother John, a computer scientist.[4]

Avorion and Factorio

>Applicability of degree
2, ChemEng so far has only been slightly applicable in Factorio, in parts of industrial design and Lean. I don't think my field would make a very interesting game by itself, but I'd love to play an factory building game with in-depth chemistry and fluid mechanics.

>Rotors
If the game involves designing moving vehicles or mechanical machinery there is no excuse to not include them. Not necessary in larger scale or in games that have no mechanical engineering (Shenzen I/O, etc)

>Turing complete
People tend to figure out how to make pretty much anything Turing complete anyway

>Block vs Snap
I can deal with either to ensure good performance. Just don't make a block based game that can't actually handle more than a couple thousand cubes at once

>Stress and breakage
Fuck them. Shitty stress physics ruined Kerbal with wobble and cursed Spengies to always have shitty simspeed. They are funny for the first fifteen minutes and after that all you get out of them is the occasional laugh when they shit themselves on someone else.

Yes I have bought over 20 engineering games in the last week

88, I am currently studying space engineering

Rotors are absolutely essential for engineering games. Even electrical engineering games should have them

Yes, engineering games should be turing complete and should have an api written in a compiled language

The question of blocks versus snaps is irrelevant. Engineering games should at the very least allow creation of custom shapes and have constructive solid geometry.

Engineering games must have stress and breakage. In addition it must also have finite element capability with nonlinear elasticity and plastic deformation simulated.

Russians.
Too bad it's sort of a meme now. In the 90s, russians were gods of optimization, as they had to work with shitty computers in USSR, and time spent using the mainframe was strictly rationed.
However, in early 00s, old engineers started dying off or retiring, companies like Google poached god-tier OПTИMИЗATOP russians, and Russia itself was left with idiots as bad as ordinary code monkeys in western companies.

There are prodigies springing up here and there, but that can be said about any country, and none of them are going into indie gaming.

From what it looks like, it's basically "point where to want your ship to face", rather than direct control of pitch and yaw. It might make more sense gameplay-wise in a tight combat arena like shown in the video, which is why I said I'd like to try it first.

When I copy-paste my ship design from my palette, why do many of the parts become iron? They weren't iron while I was making the ship
>>
>>168485767
You kinda of ruined your profile there in my opinion, try expanding to the sides instead of closing in the middle.
As a personal aesthetics suggestion, i would recommend abusing corners(The tetra, anti-tetra or whatever its called and the pyramid)
But dont go to small(specially with scale)or it can become a pain.

You dont really need a shitton of frontal surface area to put turrets in, as long as you are shooting at a decent range, most of them will be ble to aim, just keep in mind the relative position of the camera focal point to your ship, if its above, turrets on the bottom of your ship will have more trouble aiming at a target that is above your ships own horizontal plane.

Try using auto-targeting turrets on the rear areas of your ship, or use them exclusively, since they use the AI's targeting algorithm, and focus entirely on maneuvering.

Im not exactly sure on how it works, but it looks like blocks have an internal hp which sums up to form you overall ship hp, if you have integrity fields, the internal hp is multiplied, but your final hp still uses the original block hp, meaning that if your ship were to take a lot of damage on a single block, it would take damage normally, but that block would take a lot longer to actually be destroyed. Armor feels like kinda of a waste early on i think.

To view this more clearly, if you ever get a ship destroyed when it had ifields, the wreckage would look almost intact, so you dont really have to worry about turrets dropping as long as its on a large block with ifields.

And by the way, you're planning to never fucking ever do any mining or salvaging right? You have way too many turrets(did you get a literal exotic fucking turret mod?)

So I played with it. The control system isn't horrible, by any means. That being said, if possible, it'd be cool if we could get an alternative control scheme. Something like the view (and guns) locking forwards, and the ship turns more as the mouse is further away from the center (see attached, ignore the roll).

What is FUG, and why does it count up?

>By the way, are you aware that you can spawn multiple engines inside one spot and increase the power without increasing footprint?

Yes, we've just not been doing it as a debug thing. This is going to be fixed before the multiplayer release. The game does not check in the builder if parts are clipping. When you lose a thruster, however, it will collide with parts remaining on your ship, effecting a physics explosion if enough parts are stacked.

>So I played with it. The control system isn't horrible, by any means. That being said, if possible, it'd be cool if we could get an alternative control scheme. Something like the view (and guns) locking forwards, and the ship turns more as the mouse is further away from the center (see attached, ignore the roll).

This was the original control scheme for REM way before we showed it off to you guys. It was awful and really disorienting. REALLY bad. I mean, we could allow you to choose other methods we've previously used, even add a few like raw keyboard input with zero auto stability, but you'd only be kneecapping yourself in terms of control while fighting others in multiplayer. As a test, try lowering the 'sensitivity' on the cockpit and attempt making hard maneuvers.

Fug is a little in joke for the damage readout when we were testing to see if it would actually function. Its just a debug command we didn't take out. If you run into a wall after pressing it once, lose a thruster or whatever, then press it again, it won't stack/count up.

Stack thrusters bro, you maneuverability could be better.
They literally dont do shit with volume
Pretty sure if you get 0.25 scale thrusters running along that entire bottom part you get more brake thrust than actual thrust
Also you dont have to feel guilty about it because they dont really make a lot of sense, what we should have is smaller, more fragile, but more powerful thrusters that need to be placed at strategic positions instead of fucking space cheese graters everywhere.

My theory was that it would be removing a step from the chain, going from "Tell ship which way to point>ship decides which way to turn>ship decides what thrusters to use" to "Tell ship which way to turn>ship decides what thrusters to use". I dunno, I can sort of see your point as I play around with it, but it's still be neat to at least try it out.

Probably not well, considering I used what I believe to be the weakest of the struts (carbon fiber). In fact, using nitro causes the large thrusters to detach in the first place. It was more of an experiment with the physics and ship building than really anything else. It rolls when it yaw-s because I didn't think to put side thrusters above center of mass, but it's neat that such a thing happens.

Also they say they are going to enter beta soon. What the flying fuck. I remember like 3 YEARS ago they said they were in beta. Now they've changed their minds and are saying they are only in alpha? Are they going to milk it for another 3-4 years saying they are in beta/alpha to avoid any criticism?

So if you dump them in a way that they'll move out of delivery roboport only when there's not enough of them in main network

Don't buy into his shit. REM is not even remotely engineering anything, it's just a shitty arena shooter that happens to be in space.
Machinecraft would be the closest thing with some actual engineering, even though it isn't f2p; it just has plenty of the other characteristics of f2p. Then you're only left with Robocraft and transformice
>>
>>168516325
oh and I think Machinecraft had some free weekends, so that's a thing, too.
>>
>>168516325
>Robocraft but not REM
Considering they're basically the same style of game, I don't see what you mean. The only real difference is that Robocraft builds with blocks and REM builds with lines.
>>
>>168514267
Higher difficulty just means you reach the steamroller point later.
>>
>>168516325
Point me to Machinecuck's terminal ballistics simulation. Machinecuck is nothing more than rigging ragdoll animations around pivot points and you should gas yourself if you honestly believe otherwise. It is Roblox 2 and nothing more.

Sandboxes are fucking cancer.

damn, I guess it's going to be shelved until there is actually a game around the building mechanics. Just like every other /egg/
>>
>>168516629
Robocraft is at least a game with a playerbase, although a rapidly declining one both gameplay-wise and numbers-wise.
In fact, both are pretty shit. Then it's just Machinecraft and Empyrion in a near decent state, with the totally ded Starmade flanking the back with even more /seg/.

Resonators a shit, we've got bombs for anti materiel weapons

You want EM radiatioin emitters to eliminate the biomass and keep materiel intact
>>
>>168515696
No - robocuck is decomposing, Jewout is OBT soonâ„¢, that airship mmo is probably already dead, Machinecraft is a glorified 3D modeler, Algodoo is 2D physics simulator which may or may not even be f2p, Starmade is Java and soon will have it's power system completely redesigned from scratch, KOHCTPYKTOP is of short and having of small aspect engineering, REM is a meme.
You're shit out of luck my poorfag tovarisch. Pirate paid ones, although even then there is no guarantee it won't be shit too.
>>
>>168516920
You could build shittier ships to impose limitations on yourself haha. Like right now I'm too lazy to add more generators, so my warp core drains my battery after a jump and I can't use half my weapons.

>>168517123
unfortunately that kind of mentality never works for me. The point of playing is exactly the opposite: you face greater and greater challenges so you have to adapt in creativity and tactics. Just adding guns and increasing the size of the ship is not a challenge nor progression.

It's the same problem I have with factorio. I know that for most just building a 10/10 factory is enough, but I need an actual game with game mechanics and challenge.

What if some game - for example Avorion, with some changes - took the shitty old Starmade generator system and, instead of making the power based on virtual volume, make it based on surface area and dimensionality?

Very understandable. You could speedrun to the center- That would add some urgency. I know when my game kept crashing I was playing it like a roguelike and it was more challenging and immediate.

I can see it working well with fixed weapons, but it wouldn't work at all if you want to manually aim gimbling guns and fly at the same time.
>>
>>168533458
You could have a "look around" button to disable mouse control of flying while held, allowing for gimball aiming.

That said, it's not terribly different than the current setup. You still shoot where you're going to be pointing the ship, it's just that the turrets turn faster than you do.
>>
>>168479004
That change is still currently in the beta branch, koonschi posted some numbers of further changes he will make to the beta branch before sending it to stable. If you want your ships to work the same afterwards, build them with the thrusters divided into 4 plates and then fuse them into a single block after the update.
>>
>>168533734
>That said, it's not terribly different than the current setup. You still shoot where you're going to be pointing the ship, it's just that the turrets turn faster than you do.

You can hold down right click to turn off your thrusters, and still aim with your guns.

Yes and no, conceptually. We could make them go off like 2L pop bottles with dry ice jammed inside them, but I don't think that'd be a good idea for gameplay. Damage applied to a thruster and then you try to boost with it might work as a catalyst, but I'm leaning more towards your cooling going to hell after being smacked around a bit and then you override the safety mechanism, so its less of a random "OH FUCK" event and more of a calculated option for a last stand.

PhysX, then. The awful unity implementation that disables hardware acceleration. We went pretty far out of our way in REM to use it as little as possible, due to its tendency to clang and randomly detonate in multi-grid systems and fluid dynamic welding system. We didn't even fucking bother attempting it over a network connection, that's a recipe for going nuclear levels of insane.

It can be replaced with something else via some light hacking, but it requires more fuckery than its probably worth, and then you have to license the new physics engine.

If you press two objects together, does the resultant abomination fly/recieve phantom forces? It should on default settings.
>>

>Since i've heard you (or the REM guys) had to replace most of the physics engine i thought "what the fuck? they developed their own shit and now they have to license it to use it?"

Yeah, that'd be a fun pound of bullshit. Well, if we're being nit-picky, we're not using a totally custom engine, but rather a script plugin that simulates stress and other such nonsense through multi threaded scripts rather than relying on the locked down proprietary nonsense of physX which only uses one thread ever. The issue was control of how exactly physics integrated and applied force to parts, which had a very specific bracket at which they were viable. A deviation within [0.01] could fuck the whole game's physics.

We're still using physX for positional data and reporting collisions, mostly because it'd be a lot more pain and time than it'd be worth to integrate another system just for that, especially since there's a lot of custom code in the unity implementation that makes it werk well enough for most games made with unity.

That all being said, I think I've only ever seen one game to use Unreal Engine, the direct competitor to Unity at this time, and be a halfway decent building game. Brickrigs. I think it uses havok, but it uses a similar implementation of custom scripts for stress and break off.

Totally custom, courtesy of REMdev's insane rambling and black heretical magicks. Its more complicated and more simple than you think, but most of the work went into the theory. Actual implementation took about 5 days of solid work and then a few more of bug fixing..

I was going to just start attacking Bottan since I actually happened upon the quest where I deliver goods to him a SECOND time, but when I got closer I noticed he had 170k shields and hull, NOPE, not taking that on

That actually was quite interesting mate thanks, I'm dreaming about delving into unity someday to make spengies in spelljammer and physics is very important part
