Some kind of 3D pinball where you throw your character in a sea of obstacles and hope it reaches its destination

cacti would be one of the things you would need to avoid

Think PAIN (PS3 game) but instead it's a much narrower world with tunnels and shit and you have to reach a destination, there would be levels etc

So I figured my game might be a bit too big and I want to make a smaller, free, maybe even HTML5-based game that allows me to get some traction with vidya making in general because experience never hurts, but also because I want my other game to be paid and I'd feel better if i published something finished for free first

So I got this Idea where the player gets a party of 4 randomized adventurers being played by awful players, in a background tabletop game where the GM is also an awful railroader, and the gameplay is basically them walking to the right (I even thought of a conveyor belt to signify the GMs railroading even further and because lol no walking animations) and fighting everything they come across (monsters, thieves, villagers, merchants, everything) because they're awful murderhobos, and this continues on until you either get a total party kill or you kill the end boss, and you'd get some upgrades and items here and there

The battle system would be similar to darkest dungeon both in mechanics and presentation (in terms of layout, mostly)

Is it something simple enough for me to make on my own in a month or two, or is it another very big project and I'm fooling myself?

>tl;dr is a browser game with 4 random characters going to the right and fighting random enemies doable in under 3 months?

I've done a similar prototype in the past where you get randomized characters and fight randomized monsters in a turn-based environment, but without any graphical feedback (it was just text and numbers) so I have a somewhat approachable idea of what to do and I'd have to apply it to an environment with actual graphics

>if (condition) { }
>elthe { }
>>
>>168228470
use it when you want to make sure that time is consistent regardless of the game's running frame rate

like if I said
>Timer -= 10f
each frame, it might actually be different on different speed computers running the game

so you say
>Time -= 10f * Time.deltaTime
that way it always countsdown at the same real-time speed
>>
>>168228470
It's more a core game development concept than a UE4 thing
>>
>>168228757
Ok right, but then how exactly can I get a "real life second" using that ? I don't really understand "how much" a delta second is.

>>168228841
I'm not very surprised.
>>
>>168229257
delta time is the time in seconds since the last frame

so if the frame is 1/60th of a second, and you multiply a number by the delta, that number will change from "x per frame" to "x per second"
>>
>>168229257
Delta time is the time it took to render the last frame.

If your game is running at 60fps, it is 1/60 = 0.016. This is half as big as if your game was running at 30fps.

So by multiplying the rate at which something happens by this number, you can keep it consistent between framerates.
At 60fps, 'it' happens twice as often, but every change is half as big, so it happens at the consistent rate.

What is the problem, anon? I'm seriously asking, because in my experience, only people with some serious issues express hatred towards people who are having fun or enjoying themselves. But in case I'm wrong and you would like to truly argue about this topic, here's my counter argument.

Jams are for:
- practice
- have fun
- chance to collab
- chance to leave comfort zone and experience with new things
- learn time management

And, you'll be surprised, they are voluntary! No one is forcing anybody to participate or to play the games. You are not asked to leave your main projects, and those who do in favor of a jam, probably have the time to do so, or just got inspired by the theme. Other than that, occasionally jam games become main projects.

I don't see your point about the seemingly lack of submissions. I know that at least four more games are in the making for the jam, all comfier than the other. Which is a pretty big number if you think about it! /agdg/ is not that big of a community to begin with, people have jobs or school duties, so sparing time for a side project is a big commitment knowing how much time resource it requires. These guys are the true heroes of this place. They don't get frightened by any challenge, but rather answers the call, and they hold on to any opportunity when they can make a game, a new source of fun and joy for others.

I have been wanting to make a WoW raid style game in a real engine after I made one with the Warcraft 3 works editor. Is unity the best for making everything? I'm thinking of doing either a traditional 3rd person style like WoW or a top down style with wasd movement similar to Battlerite.

Hello, /agdg/.

Need your help finding the best suiting game engine for my needs.

>cant code but willing to learn
>finished game must run on Android
>2D would be totally fine
>not text only
>want player to move through a hand drawn world interacting with things and persons but not only "pick up item X to put it in object Y"
>a lot of dialogues/decisions
>need function: "player interacts with object X and things happen like picture/video gets shown
>inventory would be nice
>need an engine with a lot of tutorials
>dont know where to start

First I thought Visionaire Studio would be a good start but Im kinda afraid it could be too limited.

Any help is appreciated.

Let's say I have a function in C++ which returns a bool. Something like this:

bool function(int x){
if(x>10){
return false;
}
}

As you can see, there's no "return true".

Now let's say I have this part in the code:

bool variable = true;
variable = function(5);

What will be the value of "variable"?

It might sound weird, but as I see on some machines variable stays true, while on others, it'll be set to false.

Comfy Sailing
https://youtu.be/znZOwqN-Pgs
- Nice idea. With polish and more work, I could totally imagine a fun kids game with this set up, like those Humongous Entertainment games but with 3D.
- I originally imagined a game like WoW but on water based on the progress, and pretty much got what I was waiting for.
- The camera is horrible. Just let it stick to the back of the player, or add something more responsive key to control it like the arrows. There's no point for it to gain momentum.
- Even if "S" is fun for sailing, I just got used to "W" for going that I started to fish many times when I just wanted to go.
- Nice animations and models.
- It was fun to explore and sail around.

Stay Woke
https://youtu.be/NvHeP76DuRc
- I'm kinda sad that you don't seem to be a regular /agdg/ visitor, but whatever.
- I think the game has a good set up, but the writing needs some work. I feel that swearing is absolutely unnecesseary and adds nothing to the character.
- The graphics needs some work. I was not always sure what can and can not walk on. Not to mention that sometimes items look misplaced. Like that sink feels like it's not placed at the wall.
- I've got a huge drop of FPS when I went outside, but in general the game had a feel it's going to fell apart.
- The enemies stick to me like glue, I felt like I have no chance to defend myself other than hoping to shot them before they get near to me.
- The music is very nice.

Much more flexibility. Basically, if you want to make a Visionaire game Visionaire works pretty well.

If you want to make something that deviates from that in any significant way, you better be ready to pour through its poorly documented API and constantly post threads/replies in their slow moving forum to build what you want.

That goes down to even how the conversations are presented. If you want to make a game that's like the Blackwell games - it's a good engine for you. If you want to make something different, it'll fight you every step of the way.

What programs you use to make your art's up to you. Unity takes most of the popular file formats. If you want to do 2D backgrounds, Adventure Creator and Unity can both more than handle it.

There'll be some time to adjust and get yourself acquainted, yeah, but once you're up and running (and there are several examples provided that come with both Unity and AdventureCreator that should help you along the way) it shouldn't be too hard.

This is hard. Right now, I have it so that the player can't jump unless he's Grounded.
However he also counts as Grounded if he's touching the side of an object, such as a wall... So he can "jump" using a wall, as if he was jumping off the ground.

My friend is suggesting I use raycasting and work out arrays. That shits scary. This is hard.

You should at least look at some fully implemented platformer movement systems. Don't outright copy one, since so much of a platformer's feel depends on it's unique movement code. But at least be aware of existing solutions and the tradeoffs that exist.

Also there are some notorious bugs that show up whenever someone naively codes movement, for example diagonal movement being faster than straight movement.

I would like to design a game of absolute horror. Not shit with jumpscares (only a couple)

But something that has an environment so fucking creepy, characters so fucking scary

The fucking pinnacle of horror and terror. It cant be done with shitty zombies and stuff. You need to go to the roots of what makes something scary and intensify it by 600000X. Like a fucking nightmare. In nightmares it's not jumpscares. But theres something genuinely horrifying about them.

UML is snake oil. UML is only necessary if you are planning out a large OOP architecture with lots of inheritance and coupling because that makes your code brittle. So...just don't write code that way.

Well, that's UML class diagrams, specifically. In any case, UML is formal and meant to be a standard for communication. If you're just doing stuff yourself then you don't need to follow any particular format. Always prefer to program in a way that is flexible (restrict access to mutable state, follow single responsibility, don't make unnecessary classes that you only make one instance of, etc.) rather than resigning yourself to writing bad code and wasting even more time planning beforehand.

There's an old j2me game called darkest fear, made by Rovio (the angry bird dudes). Great game, had two sequels.

There's also closure, a free flash version and a commercial remake, where only the parts of the level in the light are the ones you can collide with. I assume it's what >>168233709 was talking about.

I had them set up to hear noises from one full screen length away.

Basically, their hearing works in pixel radius around them.

Your walking footsteps produce 10 noise, so it adds 10 to their hearing radius, which means you can't just walk up behind them, but they won't immediately notice you if you walk into a room with one not looking your way.

Running adds 50 currently, but I'll probably bump it up to 80.
Having the flashlight increases the noise by 180, one screen length, but enemies behind walls only hear 1/5th of the noise you make, so they won't even notice a flashlight since the light doesn't go through walls.

A gunshot is dependant on the weapon, but currently a pistol creates 450 noise, enough for an enemy in the next screen to hear it, shotgun is 650, knife makes no noise when stealthed, 10 when not stealthed.

Different loot containers make different amounts of noise when you loot them. Cloth bags and any non weapon item laying on the ground make no noise, so you can stealth loot dangerous areas.

The trashcans you see in the beginning make 180 noise, since they are pretty noisy.

I'mma add perks that allow a player to be more stealthy, etc. Plus more enemytypes with better/worse vision and hearing.

My goal is to make the game big as fuck, and release it for 2.99 a pop. I want broke people to be able to afford it, and people with crappy computers to be able to run it

Let's say I would like to make a game similar to AudioSurf where the level is generated based on the music.

Any C++ libraries which helps to analyze music data like that? Aside from that, any must read materials to understand how sound data is stored and processed and created? I think that loli is the term for 2D little girls.
You don't see people calling real little girls lolis, they're just different.

Some lolis get sexualized because they have little body but with women's curves. If you look at that picture, a little girl is not supposed to have those curves.
>>
>>168249530
Audiosurf just looks for boosts in the low frequencies. Nothing fancy there.
>>
>>168249910
anon

Loli is russian to little girl
>>
>>168249530
Towards your analogy, what would a "pixel" of a song be?

There are tons of libraries for audio in C++, but you probably need to narrow down your approach. As in, what do you want to get out of your audio? BPM? Maybe if you had the BPM, you could parse the song into beat-sized chunks, and do something based on the volume of each chunk. The main problem with audio data is that now that everything is so compressed (in audio production terms, not data compression terms) it's hard to analyze anything useful because songs are smashed up to 0 db throughout the whole track.

IMO, this is why user generated beat-map games are more popular. For example, AudioSurf just kind of speeds up randomly when the song gets loud, so it's not very cool.

I looked into it a little and found this: http://www vsxu com/what-is-vsxu

Completely free. Of course, this is audio visualization, but there must be some useful functions in there for extracting some basic information about the audio file.

in unreal you can use Lit or Unlit sprites. can you make lit sprites look as good as unlit sprites with an ambient light? I was thinking about using lit sprites and adjusting the ambient light for night and indoor areas, and using spot lights for torches and campfires.

Fair points, thanks for the answers!

I think I'll dig a little into music data to understand how it works so I could understand what I really want.

Using pre-generated beat map would be the safest option.

It just triggers me that so often the action is not in harmony with the music. The only occasion where it wasn't a rhythm game yet the music perfectly matched the level was in DKC Returns on one of the factory levels. I think there's a gap in games.

fun game you have there anon, grats
few things:
-merlin bugged off screen one time(was it too fast??)
-bgm and whistled intro really got me in the mood 10/10
-i got very excited everytime i defeated a huge ass fish(bosses) thats a huge plus
-normal fishes are too fast slow down them a little
-bait dont float and its moves too fast in both directions
-when a fish bite your bait it's position get snapped into the corner of the screen too fast (idea °1: lerp to position slower, idea °2: no snapping to bottom screen but fish stay in place and their strenght is based on distance between dock/boat in the moment they bait was bitten but that means that the fishes you try to catch under your feet are the tougher fuckers ever)

i hope it helped

Quite a bit of progress today. First, designed some new attack animations and started stitching more branches together; one thing I love about the Dixie system is it's trivial to say "I want XXX*X and X*X to lead into the same string" by just selecting a "next attack" that's the same for both, which means a lot more dial-in variety.

Also rewrote my input detection system a little bit to better detect the difference between "pressed" and "is pressing" of an input, which enables charge-release-charge combos, seen here with the YY heavy string (the latter of which makes use of per-charge-state animation tweaks, but is missing particle effects and windup tuning).

On the back-end, finally came up with a good method for manually calling the death of summoned hands, meaning I can do a better job with the block-and-release visuals. Also that lets me attach more freely (since you don't have goofy floating hands in front of you if you cancel early), which means I can now make the block aimable in real-time, which is nice.

The aforementioned also lets me do hands for my hover, which now has not only a sweet new animation, but modified mechanics; it now lasts twice as long before "ending", and when it times out, rather than just ending, it simply increases gravity substantially (still not as much as a normal fall). This lets me pretty effectively prevent hover-cheesing to cross should-be-impossible gaps, but looks nicer with the glide animation, which I really do like.

I mean "the system I use for Dixie", which (as opposed to the one I used for Mayhem League) uses standalone attack animations and an automated blending system; the "input listen" in each attack just names the animation it will trigger when it hears the input. So rather than animating a string of attacks, I can mix and match them freely as long as the animation exists.

A coroutine is mostly equivalent to a state machine. It's just a function where you can yield a value and then be resumed by the caller as opposed to returning and finishing.

If you chop a coroutine up into chunks delimited by the yields, you get a state machine. This is how e.g. C# implements its coroutines (although they're not full coroutines as they don't allow the caller to resume with arguments).

I would like to post in the recap but I have only been posting progress since Friday so I am going to wait until I finish the first round of art upgrades and post at least a few more times and come next Monday I will re-evaluate if it feels alright to recap.

But basically right now I am redoing most of my prototype art but it is at the expense of progressing the mechanics/systems. Maybe around Thursday or Friday I will have something to show again.

your assumptions about the existence of my game is completely irrelevant to the subject at hand and the fact that you so desperately try to derail the conversation onto the subject of my game goes to show that you have no sensible arguments against the bans of the lolisimdev, which implies that you are actually well aware that there were solid grounds for said bans, but you deliberately choose to ignore them as you like the content lolisimdev was presenting
also "where is your game" is /agdg/'s way of saying of "i ran out of arguments"

you make a very much valid point
memetic scenes from porn movies like "i'm the cook" or what you just posted are often tolerated and don't yield a ban
however, i'd say that this could be the case because these particular scenes don't contain any content that can be considered as explicit enough to make for solid grounds for a ban
there are things that are tolerated in youtube videos but could possibly yield a ban on the boards, but the enforcement of the rules might not be as strict when it comes to linking content from youtube
still, this is not entirely comparable to the content posted by lolisimdev - his posts often focus on the, let's say, naughtier bits of his game and are posted directly on the board, which might be pushing the mods over the line

>>168262892
a good lot of the content posted by the lolisimdev focuses on things like naked sprites of children that sure, could be rather harmless when taken out of the context, but definitely no longer are harmless when put in the context of the game and charts of sexual activities that can be engaged in with these children, showing dozens of different ways an encounter can go down in.
i have not seen any situation in which lolidev would have been banned for completely harmless looking content, all of the material i've seen had the core theme of the game showing through.
therefore i do believe the actions of mods were not baseless and as to why, i'd have to repeat things i've already said in this thread at least twice.

I'm feeling 0 force behind a strike. It just feels.. bland. Of course there is no impact to feel, since it's just swinging in empty space.
Instead of acceleration, you use velocity. It's not like the PC is swinging the axe, but calmly rotate the arm in which the axe just happens to be at the time. There is no purpose behind the swing.
The most harmful thing, I think, is that the view stays absolutely still. This completely removes any dynamic the swing could have. Strong swings are made from the waist, not the shoulder; you put your body in it. Left arm is completely unfazed by the right arm's actions.

not that guy but
>follow through
when striking with something like a sword or cudgel, the swing extends past the intended point of impact because you have to put force into slowing down the weapon (or just the limb, in the case of a punch or kick or w/e)

he probably means that the axe doesnt travel as far as it should

Sprite has inconsistencies with box/not bow
Controls feel heavier than the sprite, but not that bad after a short introductory phase
Dashing controls are horrible, double-tap is garbage
Found two bugs with slopes and one more where her head would clip through a slope from the bottom, but the latter seems to be intentional to avoid getting headclipped by tiles. When standing on the left-/right-most pixel of a slope, the sprite spazzes in a kneeling position. When jumping to the V made by two slopes on the upper left of the level, hitting the middle from the bottom of the two slopes causes the character to clip through to the top.

Feature: Healing enemies.
>>
>>168272160
did you tried making it a int before checking?

(int) transform.localeulerangles
>>
>>168272160

So then what you need to do is figure out the relative rotation of the sprite to the camera to get a range from -180 to 180. The sprite angle could just be decided arbitrarily or via whatever systems you use, camera angle is simply Mathf.Atan2(camera.forward.z, camera.forward.x) * Mathf.RadToDeg; Just subtract one from the other and you should be fine.

Once you have your angle, you simply categorize the angle into whatever increments it is you want. Mathf.Floor((Angle / 45) + 0.5) should get you a different integer for every angle.

If you have problems with the range being something other than 0-360 you can always do (angle + 360) % 360.

Looks good anon, always like seeing your progress!

An observation on your swing, unless your character had that weird accident like the kid in Rookie of the Year (1993). There should be a brief moment before swinging through where the axe is brought back a tiny bit more.

You might be able to swing a flyswatter without much windup, but an axe is trying to cleave through something, it's gonna neat a little oomph.

(And if you want to get a bit more silly with it, slicing motions generally happen over an elliptical arc, sort of reaching out as you swing and drawing the blade back towards you and the edge across your target. Whereas hacking and smashing motions generally happen over an more spherical arc like swinging a hammer.)

Pulling back before a swing is verboten in nearly any martial art, involving weapons or otherwise.

With that said, conveying movement is more important in animation, so in this case, despite the fact that your advice isn't founded in reality, it's still sound.

i'm the anon that was asking about structuring my code yesterday. found this article while i was slacking off at work today, it feels like it generally describes the problems i was having and how to solve them. does anyone with more experience in unity have opinions on this? should I be erring on the side of extrapolating every individual function into its own script rather than grouping by "unit"?

it doesnt look like theres any kind of smooth lerp in your animations. The axe should go further and slow to a stop, also it should ease slowly into bringing it back toward you. Remember that the heavy part of the axe is the head so u need to think about that

I know how computers work but it seems you dont

>SPREADING YOUR GAME WITHOUT CONSENT OF THE RECEIVING MACHINE'S OWNER IS ILLEGAL.
If you open up a internet tracking program like wireshark you will see a bunch of data going through that you didnt consent to. It would be impossible to consent to so much data
I think its only a problem if it is a bad program

>If people want to spread your game, let them do it. Do not program a fucking virus.
I said before its not a virus its a game and I want a lot of people to play it

Loli was there from the start. There is no reason to remove it.

Do you honestly think this is anyone's thought process?

Guess you didn't read the terms and conditions of your software.

c# question:

when I register something like this, and all references to the object "lose" are gone, does it garbage college "lose" or do I have to manually unregister before it will get rid of it from memeory, e.g. (lose.Clicked -= GameOverClicked);

what if the object that GameOverClicked is on is garbage collected?

also when I say object I mean c# object, not gameobject
>>

We already had a loli jam with 0 (zero) participants

>Do you honestly think this is anyone's thought process?
Not when its new but once a few people try it they will tell their friends about it.
Do you think people naturally picked up shit colored chocolate or cow tit juice and thought "im going to eat this"? No, its because their friends did it and said it was good

I'd be interested in which discipline you train in where they stress never pulling back before a swing, unless it's to beginners in order to break the habit of swinging for the fences on every strike.

As you train more the pullback is still there, it's slight and usually happening in conjunction with a re positioning of your feet but it's definitely still there. Usually as a result of driving the strike with your hips -> shoulders.

lose will become equal to null and running that line of code will throw a nullreference

It's the same layout it's been for months

new jam hasn't been decided on, and comfy jam is just finishing, hold your horses.

>I'd be interested in which discipline you train in where they stress never pulling back before a swing,
not that guy, but Aikido is all about counters and throwing from a ready stance, and what few strikes there are are from that ready stance. you dont pull back to punch or kick
>>
>>168277076
oh is this a martial arts game?
>>
>>168278327
well the axe in his animation is not at a ready stance. If it were it would probably be offscreen
>>
>>168278367
Is the game being or not-being a martial arts game at all related to whether a counterargument to the categorical statement of "that axe needs to come towards the user before a strike" is valid? Work on your rhetoric faggo.
