We have battle map creating tools now. Only land battles and only for custom/custom mp games. Siege battles may be a possibility in the future but they're practically covering their ears and screeching at any mention of using modded maps to improve the campaign.

They sure don't, but they're also warring a lot more often in the Empire. For most threats in Bretonnia, the knights and yeomen can handle it, only for the occasional big threat do they levy the peasantry.

The unit I'm most excited for with bretonnia are questing knights.

Cheap but good and durable armor piercing anti-large cavalry. less of a charge bonus than regular bret cav but good at taking out elites.

Grail knights are amazing though.

could have a buff to their damage resistance, but they're beast. They have insane charge stats. which is befitting lance cavalry.

Their charge is powerful enough that usually armor or large targets don't really matter.

But a bit more toughness. Like lore of life or beast magic could also help. The fey enchantress was always a great lore of life user. In the book she could take any lore. Which when i played usually meant using either light or life. Life with its huge boost to toughness, or light for just making grail knights tear through units. Also her chalice always allowed her to cast a random heavens spell. would be neat if it was incorporated as an item. even if it ends up just being lightning bolt.

I think it works.

On table top though any unit of grail knights would probably out number blood or chaos knights almost 2-1. with grail knights usually deployed in groups of 9 compared to the other units 5.

so taking in to account that they're fighting equal number of superior cavalry i think they do well.

I can't wait for questing knights though since I think they'll pair well with grail knights. Questing knights sitting in a combat pinning a unit in place while the grail knights cycle charge. and with both units only being slightly more expensive then the opposing cav. Questing knights as armor piercing very armored and shielded cav is going to be really great. even if they don't get anti-large they'll be a good compliment in cav battles against elite cav.

How large do you think lore-wise could the Empire field an army if they summoned every single state in the combined Empire and emptied their treasury?

Could they surpass a great army numbering 100,000+? How large-scale are the Warhammer fantasy battles in the actual fluff?

I think if they ever did combine forces they would easily surpass 100,000 soldiers.

The thing is with the Empire, they are so used to getting fucked on so many different fronts, that it's rare to see state troops from different states fighting together. There are exceptions when there are huge battles, usually ending in the deaths of several characters (see Marius Leitdorf fighting alongside Karl Franz at the 3rd battle of Black Fire Pass).

I wouldn't consider End Times in this example simply because each sides numbers got bloated so much by merging all the factions together.

Best bet is to go by artwork in my opinion.

When the Warhammer humblebundle I was thinking about getting it then I realized I've barely touched a Total War game since playing Rome a bunch in like 2005 despite owning a bunch on steam.

So I booted up Shogun 2 last sunday and holy shit I played like 8 hours a day all week and finally finished my first campaign. Chosukabe on hard. Tried not to save and load too much even after losing some big battles and had so much fun crawling my way back.

Only thing that sucked was is the AI is retarded when it comes to its navy and actually broken when it comes to naval combat. It's constantly throwing 2 or 3 ships into my big stacks of high level ships. Then during battle it will often not move ships or run them to the edge of the map. Apparently CA broke it in a patch and never fixed it.

I'm think I'm gonna do a medieval 2 campaign next then maybe get Fall of the Samurai because that looks cool as hell. The Warhammer universe is way too goofy for my tastes.

Also my favorite unit in the bretonnian arsenal is the mounted yeomen. ranged against enemies that can out melee it, decent charge means they can do well against ranged or artillery on the charge and can shoot both going into and leaving combat while being decently fast. Mounted yeomen are great. heroic peasants are the best.

I wish I knew how to do well with them.

All they do is fire wet noodles for me that barely hurt the enemy unless I have them sit still and concentrate on them for a minute or so but then that leaves them exposed.

But they're better in multiplayer where the AI doesn't have god tier micro. but you ideal want to shoot lightly armored big targets (trolls, crypt horrors, manticores) or other lightly armored unshielded infantry,

Stay away from enemy range units

UNLESS
1. they are occupied elsewhere
2. you are in their flanks or rear.

And by all means if you are in the flanks or rear your should be charging those missile units or artillery. since with a charge bonus of 10, they have 28 melee attack and 32 weapon strength and against the flanks/rear of those lighter units a charge is devastating.

and then immediately run out and while you retreat you fire some more shots into their disorganized rear while retreating.


and then when things start breaking you can use them to run down worth while units

In another game I had them get into melee with some wild rider units in woods. they escaped with only about 24 left. but after winning the rest of the cavalry engagement they were able to come back and still get 44 kills some of which where one wildwood rangers and others chasing down some fleeing woodelf infantry or engaging goblin cavalry forcing them off the field.

You have to manually use them for their best effects though, and only put them on skirmish mode when not directly microing them and their not facing against arrows.

I've had games where even though they don't get tons of kills, the ability to distract ranged units away from a more fragile to ranged pole arm line allowing them to close relatively unmolested.

Can a 40k fan explain to me how a Slaanshi Daemonette would affect a Space Marine? Aren't they like supreme autists in that they don't feel many of the human emotions we feel (i.e. lust)? Also they're supremely brainwashed and devoted to the emperor from birth. Furthermore, they're adorned with human skulls, which are supposed to stun daemons. So, how would they fall prey to a daemonette?

And the dwarf players deployment. An army with a lot of armor peircing with quarrelers with great weapons and hammers, and two cannons. as well as the slayers. Also note that its a cannon army with a master engineer. with plenty of ranged support.

Especially tricky considering my army is a Peasant Crafstman trebuchet build, with two rank 6 trebs as artillery. So even though I brought artillery I'm wondering if I can actually win the artillery exchange. I need my artillery to take out his infantry. but I can't ignore the cannons with the master engineer.

Space marines don't have penises. so the slaaneshi daemonettes just kinda try to kill them the old fashioned way. using lots of wonderful pain. Taking pleasure in inflicting pain is also a way a space marine can fall. especially if its against the great enemey. Or other excesses. extreme adrenaline combat highs + stimms leading to greater thrills. Bonus points if the space marine was already fighting Khorne.

Marines can still fall to chaos, the hypno conditioning isn't 100% guaranteed to protect them. Standard procedure for marines that fought demons is mind wiping them to be sure.

Slaanesh can also take hold on your soul from pride, which the marines are all about, and other stuff.

He moved his crossbows up so my cav charged forward, forcing him to move his crossbows back and his infantry forward. And he starts shooting my cav. I can't lose grails knights now.

My archers while numbering less than the quarrelers. have over loaded a flank and are aiming at the weakened unit. with my yeomen in support

They are. They are premium anti infantry units

but they will lose to cannons in an artillery duel. My trebs are key (they're ranked 6)

if you look at >>168206639 it literally is 2 seconds in. his artillery hits hard, but there's one unit of quarrelers that is already at half. this is 2 seconds in. with a salvo from the trebs.

Pulling through, the knights. unman the 3 cannon artillery piece. the damsel uses buffs, the slayers commit to the armored threat, while my yeomen drop some slayers from the back.

Any dead slayer is good, you need to kill them all anyways.

we've traded archer units, and he's delt a lot of damage to a unit of men at arms. but i'm 5 trebs to 2 cannons now.

23 dead grail knights, is worth shutting down that cannon. those slayers did good work. I didn't realize the quarrelers had great weapons, and getting stuck in too long was a mistake.

but 11 dead grail knights on the slayers is bad, my mounted yeomen get some revenge. killing 8 slayers and they'll finish off that cannon crew. as well as charge towards that now undefended cannon up top.

the cannon i killed had 30 kills, it was the 3 cannon unit. just a minute later and its 2 cannon brother has 66 kills. these cannons need to be shut down. luckily I have some fast cav nearby. My knights charge the flank of some dwarf warriors.

His quarrelers are winning the skirmish fight and my peasant bowmen are retreating back. but my artillery is now hitting those quarrelers and hammer units. At this point my infantry also start advancing. (one unit of men at arms being destroyed by quarreler fire.)

my infantry line engages and does work against mostly quarrelers and dwarf warriors, being able to fight 2 on one allows them to quickly overpower the shattered weakened line

My cav retreats, leaving a nice bunched up group of dwarf units. Perfect artillery fodder.

I take out that 32 dwarf hammer unit with my knights. down to only 9 grail knights, but worth the 80 kills they have. especially on key units like hammerers.

The peasant trebuchet crew has come back, they'll get one shot off on the hammers before being slaughtered by his lord.

and my peasants skirmish with his quarrelers. using their superior numbers to make up for quality.

here's the final battle tallies
Peasant men at arms with almost 90 kills. bowmen were solid. grail knights with 90 kills. treps with 97 and 70 kills, mounted yeomen doing tons of work that allowed for those kill counts.

you can see with 90 kills on his artillery despite me taking them out early.

4 units of warriors did nothing but that was due to them being destroyed by my artillery.

While empire survived with technology. bretonnia always used older units but with special tactics. defensive stakes, lance and arrow formation, flaming arrows. And a martial pride that makes their young nobles want to charge headlong into any battle.

To me I always liked how the peasants were secretly bad ass. And i'm talking about mounted yeomen. always one of my favorite units on the table top. Just super versatile.

Unlike in total war warhammer, Bretonnia was mostly cavalry.

Every noble in bretonnia is raised knowing that he's there to protect his land. and as such trains as a knight. A knight doesn't even get recognized as such until they're seen achieving a victory on the battlefield. And they're well trained, well equiped, use advanced cavalry tactics, have thoroughbred warhorses.

It wasn't strange for me to bring 40+ knights to a game, while still having trebs and bowmen. when most of my opponents would have 5 knights. and more infantry.

Also in the table top, knghts inspired peasants. each individual knight had a mini generals aura for peasants.

And peasants are dirt cheap with good equipment so they can be spammed and boosted with magic and knights leadership.

Bretonnians don't really see peasants as a force to win a war. just to be there to hold a line so the knights can charge in. The knights want to charge in and there's plenty of knights who refuse to give peasants glory, and they ride only with posses of knights. and Bretonnia has a shit ton of knights. since every single noble man is a knight and honor bound to fight when called. Also magic imbues them with power and they train to accomplish legendary feats etc.

tl:dr, Its fucking magic.

Honestly speaking, I find WH's load time pretty acceptable. Even on a laptop hdd the game still takes less than a minute to fully load the map. The worst offender of loading time has to be Rome 2, shit always take 2~3 minutes to get into campaign map, at least for me.

Ignore the other guy, space marines do have penises (and way larger than normal human's at that, at least according to the few sources that talk about the matter) and do feel lust, but it's like the saying of "they shall know no fear". They DO know fear, they just have mastered it beyond what any normal human could hope, so they might as well be fearless when it matters. They still have that sense of danger and precaution, since without fear they would be straight up suicidal 24/7. Same with lust, except, well, it's not like they get a lot of opportunities to feel lusty in the first place considering their lifestyle, and when they do they react the same way. But if a daemonette spent all day long for a long while tempting a space marine, he might eventually turn into a horndog. They're not infallible.

Additionally some 2Handers have other unique traits, like Greatswords and Black Orcs. And while they possess good AP, they are also good against unarmored units because they themselves are the most heavily armored units you have available.

You can try hiding in the woods with hidden encampment for some turns until the enemy armies and agents go away. Then you can send an agent the long way around to scout for the Empire.

You could also just start moving into Bretonnia to look for them with all your shit.

Originally the plan was three releases of equal size and them trying to slap everything together into one campaign only at the end.
They released a lot of factions in the first release though, and they've stated that they're making the next release bigger than planned. Maybe the campaign map will be linked with that, maybe not.

It is very smart to have heroes outside your armies. You will basically have no agent problems(except if you are at war with the whole world) and their use outside assassinating is significant.

You can deploy captain heroes to make you able to create silver or gold ranked armies or make a city hold out forever. You also have agents with good economy buffs.

Witch hunter type heroes can block armies which is a really important skill. You also have the very useful sabotage wall skill(very useful in the early game) to make hole in the walls.

Playing Empire has become really boring. I propose a small change:

When you confederate a state, any existing army stacks present and any future troops recruited from settlements within that provinces will ALWAYS use that provinces color scheme for their armies. With the tiny exception of a small sigil or emblem to denote them being Empire infantry.

That way, if you confederate Middenland, the soldiers still look largely dark blue/purple. Only when you brute force invade another province will they completely assimilate into the Empire.

Chaos Dwarfs are coming out before Ogres.

Think of it in practical terms; Ogres means adding in the Mountains of Mourn. Between the World's Edge Mountains (current eastern border of the map) and the MoM is The Dark Lands, which is the home turf of the Chaos Dwarfs. You'd have a lot of trouble from a map design perspective if you had to add in the Ogres before the Chaos Dwarfs. Which is also why Chaos Dwarf's are listed before Ogres in the leak.

I was thinking about going into a crazy crusade so I could create some vassals and get that sweet, sweet gold.

That said, I think I lack the power to maintain a long war.
I have one army securing the northern cities and occasionally sailing to fuck with the norca guys, another army securing the north cause Chaos (the big boys) is going to spawn in ~10 turns, another army is over there too dealing with beastmen and stuff, Karl is just fucking around, usually dealing with the orcs in the south cause they are going to CRUSH the dwarfs, is just a matter of time and another army is in Hemgart, in case the tree huggers decide to pay me a visit.

ones their armies get wrecked by attrition they won't be as effective. the east and west settlemetns are the best to target.

Honestly the skarsnik campaign is made easy with the elves being so agressive since its so easy to raze and sack and raid athel loren.

But yeah just a bit of pruning now and then can solve any wood elf issues. and sooner rather than later.

It's not that easy for the player because you can't confederate like the AI does so you actually have pretty big income issues in the beginning.
So you'd have to wait for the other guys to move out and backstab them, maybe then try to go north. Takes a while for the research to prevent attrition too.

Vargheists are useful as fuck. Mobility out the ass and they throw a huge weight into any fight they land on. Of course they aren't straight up as killy or tough, but you can't beat straight up removing entire units of archers from any angle.

Terrorgheists aren't quite as fast but they will really tip cav fights over (anti large) and again they can come from any direction, even straight over the enemy's head.

Varghulfs are most battering rams than monsters. They don't kill super effectively but they'll tarpit more than their weight. being a single entity with a ton of mass let's them do a good job of pushing right through enemies and hitting their heroes or artillery.

I'll admit though that spamming basic infantry + cavalry + ground monster is very effective for someone with no imagination/desire to take risks.

It's not difficult but won't work all the time either. You just have to wait for them to declare war on somebody. When they've left their settlement (and maybe get blown the fuck out) you attack theirs and take over.

You won't break their garrison and a full stack of theirs if you're playing on higher than normal so this is really your only chance.

Then by some random mechanic, a winning faction is chosen if they sent a unit, and they get a small temporary reward. One thing my friend was saying, to do with the lore, but LL's should have some unique interactions they can do to others or other factions. He was basing it on how Gorbad let loose wyverns in the Altdorf palace, as a funny bit of fluff.

So basically, if you choose a LL and they have some bit of appropriate lore, they can enact a special event towards another faction or specific LL, either positive or negative action. Probably just once per game per specific interaction, and it wouldn't be much more than just an event, not like a battle or anything.

Do not under any circumstances ever use radious.

Battles are about winning the majority of engagements.
Engage the enemy force with a stable core. Your anvil.
Flank and crush certain enemy units from behind, this frees up the unit holding them in place as well, and then you flank further along the line etc.
Missiles are for weakening the enemy prior to engaging, removing the enemy's missiles or for flanking and shooting the enemy in the sides/back, but you can only do that if you have already dealt with the enemy's cav.

On the campaign, concentrate on making money before getting more expensive units.
Don't break agreements unless you really can't help it.

Show some power. Get a few full stack armies. AI is less likely to declare war on you and more likely to get treaties with you(depends on the race too though)

Heroes and monsters wrecking shit on the battlefield has been part of Warhammer for 30 years, if you don't like Warhammer I doubt you'd like the game. And positioning and tactics still matter. Your lords can't solo an entire stack

It depends on your difficulty setting and your number of holdings. A wall plus a general and some trash units can easily do the trick though.

It's also good way to level up your lords. Just keep sacking them with the lord you need to level up(with a small sized army) every turn. Useful for the ghal maraz quest too.

Several. Maybe 5-7. Not entirely sure. It's better to use as a level up thing while you have the chance(other factions will probably raze it in the end)

So I finally bought Warhammer and I gotta ask, how do you guys deal with the marauder tribes in the north when playing as Chaos?

It seems I can't awaken them all and doing so just increases favor and grants me a military alliance, rather than subjugate them, which is what I assumed it would do.

Should I just raze all this shit in the north to the ground and head south?

Everything's managed through horde growth and needing to both sack and raze each settlement turns into a hassle. You're supposed to be a snowball faction where you slowly turn into a rapetrain but you're constantly distracted by the need to replenish/re-recruit and the loss of an army can end your campaign in some cases
