Honestly this is why the western fanbase is so confused by and obsessed with Velka because of that crow symbolism. In Japan crows aren't tricksters, they're more like you said with Athena owls, messengers of the gods who bring divine wisdom, and they have a really strong link to rebirth and the sun.

This is why her Crow is what brings you to Lordran in DS1 and why she's so closely linked to Gwyn and the Flame.

You will never ever see Vagrants mentioned in any way, shape or form beyond the first game. They were a mechanic that had no lore.

While that's entirely possible, you can't deny that they look astonishingly similar. It's possible that they're going to 'give' a lore explanation for them.

See, now THAT'S the spirit. The best part of any launch/DLC is the speculation. And, the fact that the inside of the egg looks mushy and dark and is associated with humanity, and the fact that Vagrants appeared in response to a great loss of humanity, and that we're heading to the location of the furtive pygmy...there're a lot of correlations. At least, enough to merit speculation.

Extremely rare. Most people haven't seen one. I played DaS1 for 2,000 hours and only ever saw three.
>>
>>167913925
they're practically and by that I mean in all practical situations, impossible to come across unless someone is deliberately creating them.

they appear when someone in another game loses a bloodstain with a large amount of souls or humanity in it or drops an item and causes it to despawn, the item will then spawn in someone else's world and if they don't pick that up when it despawns it'll turn into a vagrant in someone else's.
>>
>>167913925

Rare even when people played all the time. They only appear when someone in a world loses a lot of Humanity or drops an item on the ground. They come in a passive variety and an aggressive one. Killing them gets you whatever was dropped from the death/drop.
>>
>>167913825
>lucifer_dyke.bmp
>>
>>167913925
You probably won't ever see one at this point. They appear when a bloodstain with enough souls/humanity (I forget) is lost. But with the state of online and the age of the community means that huge piles of souls are no longer being lost in DS1.
>>
>>167911956
God, old iron king fight is so bad, i dont even dislike the design, not even the concept of the fight even if it's quite generic, it's just the molasses speed of the fight that is terrible. Specially after you just fought one of the better base game bosses that ISNT a snail fight (Smelter). On the famous words of that e-celeb.

WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!
>>
>>167914007
>impossible to come across unless someone is deliberately creating them
I had a build specifically for this. 99vit, 76 poise, ring of favor, life ring, mom's mask, tranquil walk of peace, dark hand, and darkwraith rank 3. Invade somebody, TWoP+hand them for 10 humanity, then run away and jump off a cliff. Invade again without picking up my bloodstain so it bounces out, steal humanity, repeat.

Something about the idea of giving people crabs over the internet just made be feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

>there's an obtuse ending involving multiple random key items (and the pendant, the most important item in dark souls) that allows you to fix this and let her return to her balancing work, and then link the fires knowing the process is viable again

Well now I feel weird about the vagrant I saw all those years ago.
>>

I'd be less annoyed if this wasn't the fifth time I'd seen it.

Which probably means the fault is vaati's for taking sloppy notes, if we're being honest.

OP pasta has a heavily trimmed version of his notes that cuts out all the bullshit.
>>
>>167913196
Everyone else was more or less waiting around to die. Domhnall and Oswald had express purposes in their lives, Oswald to absolve and accuse sinners, and Domhnall to spread good cheer and odd trinkets. The guy managed to be happy in the Depths, essentially the local slums, at the gates of Blighttown, a place not known for its jolliness. >>167914238

It sounds a lot like From to give post-meaning to seemingly innocuous mechanics. It also sounds a lot like From to have planned this from the start and banked on our unquestioning acceptance of a really weird thing.

Maybe Vagrants are responsible for why Souls and Humanity disappear if you don't pick them up, and they're brought back to wherever she is for the sake of removing them from circulation? Thus, a mechanical explanation for why things go hollow the more that they die?

It's really great when you get a friendly one in your world. I've had some of the most jolly co-op with people like him.
>>
>>167917465
All spell casting is useless in the DLCs. Theoretically Fume Knight is "weak" to lightning damage, but his resistances are so high that it's better to say that it's his least-resisted element. Meaning, you take a raw physical damage weapon and apply Sunlight Blade for a few extra points of damage, and not do it to a Boltstone-infused weapon.

Hexes still lay waste to everything outside of the DLCs, and I'm pretty sure that they're still good in Eleum Loyce. But you always want some reliable source of physical damage no matter your build, solely because the DLCs were built specifically not to be as easily cheesed by spells as the main game.
>>
>>167917594
Yes. The Silver Pendant is exactly what you want for the boss.

These illusory walls respond to light sources, rather than being hit. It's one of those "this only exists in the DLC" mechanics, the Sunlight Maggot is best for this since you just have to walk near the walls.

Pale Shade invades in only a specific part of the area, same with Heysel. If you hug the right wall as you enter Farron Keep from the ladder bonfire, Pale Shade should invade. Heysel comes if you walk around the area near the back of the third bonfire.

There may be a glitch that makes them not spawn if you're playing in offline mode, but I'm pretty sure that was patched long ago.

Is this a bad build? Should I just go full caster?

I've never played with sorceries in DS1 or 2 and thought I might give them a try in DS3 before the DLC. What are the hard hitting spells everyone hates to play against? What are some good spells for pure caster?
>>
>>167920403
He is one of the easiest or the hardest depending on whether you try to get his tail weapon or not.
>>
>>167920475

Replace White Dragon Breath with a slower soul arrow or farron dart.
>>
>>167920475

That build is alright in terms of pure stats and weapons, though I would change the Parrying Dagger to a Caestus since the dagger is worse for parrying. You also might not need the Sage's Ring+2 if you're keeping that amount of Dex since you're almost at the cast speed softcap with that alone. That amount of Vigor and Endurance you have is kinda low so if that doesn't work for you I would recommend lowering Dex to about 18 and bumping Vigor to 39 and gouging End and maybe a bit of Strength to use things like the MLGS.

On to your spells, if you're doing PvP none of those are really good save Crystal Magic Weapon if you're relying on buffs. First replace HCSM with regular Homing Soulmass. Regular Soulmass is the best tool in a sorcerers arsenal by far. While the Crystal version costs far more in terms of FP cost and cast speed for the slight damage boost it has, regular Soulmass has terrifically low FP cost and cast speed. This allows you to keep Soulmass up all the time and pressure opponents with it constantly by keeping your back to them and angling shots towards them that you can do consistently.

Other spells you should consider with your ATT are Great Farron Dart, Farron Hail, Farron Flashsword, Soul Greatsword and (Great) Deep Soul. Dart is a throwing knife for sorcerers that doesn't have a use limit for fight with low FP cost and damage greater than knives at 60 INT with the same speed. It's a terrific way to deal a bit of damage to your opponent consistently and also a good finisher. Farron Hail is like a shotgun version of Dart, cheap and covers a wide area relatively fast. When used well it's a good area control spell and chip damage dealer for people that roll through it. Flashsword is a free straight sword in your offhand that pairs well with most mainhand weapons. Soul Greatsword is slower but has good range and can go through walls and such depending on the area. The Deep Soul spells are slow but cheap and easily spammable to force rolls.

>>167921023

To continue, the main goal of Sorcery in PvP is death through attrition. While comparatively pyro pvp is focused on landing 1-2 major hard-hitting spells, Sorcery has a comparatively wider field to work with in terms of consistent damage and the best area control/finishers in the game aside from Fire Surge. Think of it as a 'death of a thousand' cuts playstyle to force opponents to either take constant damage at a distance or get close so you can force combos with your spells and mainhand weapon. Sorcery on the other hand suffers from its main nukes having a huge FP problem. While Crystal Soul Spear does good damage when it hits, its FP cost is very high meaning the cost to benefit ratio for such a slow spell usually isn't worth it. We shall see if the new DLC Deep Soul spell is a better alternative nuke.

As an aside if you're looking for more options for a sorcery build Heysel Pick, Crystal Sage Rapier and Crystal-infused basic weapons such as the Longsword are all terrific options at only 60 INT with other base requirements. Heysel Pick is a low weight hammer allowing you to stack poise better than most weapon that also can R1>Soul Greatsword combo when at high cast speed. Crystal Sage Rapier is the longest rapier in the game with decent damage at only 60 INT. And Crystal-infused weapons such as the Longsword pair excellently with the pressure game while Soulmass is active in punishing players that advance towards you.

>>167921483

MLGS is a bit different from other greatswords in being a single-stat weapon that is able to get all of its damage from INT investment. This actually lends more flexibility as a result. You can go 60 INT and pair it well with your staff and spells as the 1HR1 greatsword buff makes it a great choice for punishing people that get close to you when Soulmass is up. Or you can only go 40 INT with it since you don't get much damage from 40-60 and invest in vitality to poise stack with it. MLGS is the best greatsword arguably for stacking poise due to its single-stat nature, so you if want to do something different you can min-max with it enough to get enough poise to tank through other greatswords and everything else save ultras while attacking easily.

Oh and one last thing; if you're doing PvE the only spell that matters is Great Heavy Soul Arrow. Soul Spear and CSS both come far too late in the game to be useful damage dealers and every other sorcery either takes too long or does too little damage comparatively to work against enemies. GHSA even then is just plain better compared to the Soul Spear spells as the Soul Spears cost far too much FP for the damage they do. So while Crystal Soul Spear will do more damage per cast, the amount of FP it costs will always make GHSA deal more damage overall with a full FP bar with repeated casts due to how many more you can do with it.

They're faster, they last long enough to get a few hits in after the length buffs, and the damage buff they give is slightly higher than standard charcoal/gold pine resins. Yes, start with DaS1, and go up from there. The first game is still superb, and you're doing yourself a disservice by not playing it.

It's hard to explain what I mean. It's like, there are places that you're able to go to but definitely shouldn't. And the only real indication of this seems to be the enemies being way too strong. So you die, but then you have to go back there and get your souls without dying again.

I'm new to the series myself, 3 seems way more obtuse. I'm seeing people fucking talk about juggling catalysts and weird scaling spreads and bullshit hybrid builds
in 1 you pick a stat you like, find weapons and spells for it and then pump the rest of your points into endurance and vit.
>>
>>167924710
high as fuck
>>
>>167923405
The interconnected world stuff is only present in the first half, and quite straightforward, I doubt it'd be a barrier in itself. To go a little further in detail, when you arrive at the hub area there's a few different paths available to you but it's pretty immediately evident which is the better to take first from the difficulty of the enemies. Then once you're done with that path you can handle all the others easily enough.

Beyond it just being the first in the series I'd recommend anyone start with 1 on the gameplay alone. The combat is slower and with more importance placed on choosing when to heal and how you manage your stamina, which I'd say develops better habits than starting with 3.
>>
>>167924710

>>
>>167924779
> 3 seems way more obtuse

3 is simple though, you build 40/40 str/dex and then just pump health and stamina and win at everything.

or you go pyromancer and go 40/40 int/fai and use one of the handful of pyromancer weapons but who are we kidding you'll use the onyx blade because it's the best weapon for it's star investment you'll ever get as a pyro

everything else a shit
>>
>>167923405
The game does an excellent job of using subtle cues to key you in to what it wants you to do, and I'm gonna give you the most important pro tip you will ever get about souls

souls don't matter, just leave your bloodstain on the ground you'll make them back in a minute or two, don't walk around with so many it's an actual progress barrier to lose them.
>>
>>167924710

Depends, there's already quite a few 'best in their class' weapons by a decent margin so to do that moreso seems hard. I do think they will mostly all have strong niches at least, the pyro casting Curved Sword for example is guaranteed to be great unless it has some combination of low range, shit damage or shit spellbuff. The only other thing based on what we've seen so far that might be potentially OP is the greatsword that might be pure STR scaling.

Yes, but it takes a lot of customization and getting used to. Also will require mods if you want the interface buttons to actually have keyboard prompts.

Even if you progress the "wrong way" you can still find useful. And the first NPC you meet straight out of the tutorial will flat out tell you where you need to go just make sure to talk to people but fore the most part you can figure things out just by talking to Firelink Shrine NPCs.

But as said, if you think that's too complicated then pick up DS3, roll knight and R1 mash your way to victory so you can post so hardcore omg- memes on facebook and wear a Hot Topic Dark Souls tshirt.

Lothric Spear is great

I used that on one play through and had no problems (I buffed it with Lightning or Dark depending on the enemy; Faith spells)

Dragonslayer Spear (Orn's) is quite powerful (with Leo Ring), and makes the game easy if the enemy doesn't have lightning resistance; it's an end game weapon, though. Lothric Spear can be had early on.

>>
>>167927047
DS3 has the smallest estus pool of all souls games and also the weakest estus. For majority of players those checkpoints are really needed and boss checkpoints are just a harmless quality of life option.
Besides, even back in DS1 checkpoint structure was absolutely fucked up.
>>
>>167926931
I was never super clear on this. Does dying count as using a bonfire? Since you respawn back at it.
>>
>>167927047
For some levels, yeah.
But take Lothicc castle for example, it has a whole bunch of physical shortcuts and the whole level can be reasonably expected to be played starting from the Dancer bonfire because the shortcuts come back to it, same applies for a bunch of other levels too.
>>
>>167925776
Dark souls 1 is shit with keyboard and mouse if you dont mod it

Dark souls 2 requires a hotkey fix because of retarded programmed delay on mouse buttons but beyond that it controls fine

Dark souls 3 works perfectly with k+m
>>
>>167927218
Dying does not count as resting. Nor does using Primal bonfires.
>>
>>167927218
Nope, dying is the only way to restore your estus, so you basically run straight line lighting every bonfire you see until great bonfire to teleport back and go another way
>>167927258
I think archives would better example
Lothric castle still has retarded bonfire after first knights room
Honestly dancer bonfire is here only for the oceiros boss fight, so moving it forward and removing second bonfire would make more sense
Bosses leaving checkpoint des/bloodborne style made many bonfires placement too retarded
>>
What weapon should I use to maximize damage with dark blade?
>>
>>167927218

Even lighting a bonfire doesn't count for the callenge. You can set up checkpoints this way to be used with homeward bones. Only resting at a bonfire counts.

Except that's the way they should've designed DS3 in the first place, giving only level start and end bonfires and teleport you into the hub instead of being able to freewarp.

Bloodborne checkpointing for DS3 would've made the game so much better.

lands.png
10KB, 636x410px
I think I've figured out how the whole converging lands thing works. It might have been proposed before, but I want to share it. We know the overworld is basically a cell, resting upon the canopies of the archtrees. Several of these were destroyed in the Great War and we see some restoration in Ash Lake, but maybe it wasn't enough. The world is starting to collapse in on itself and, assuming it has a positive curvature, the "radius" of the world becomes smaller. Whole regions get buried underneath while others (presumably those with somewhat healthier archtrees) manage to stay afloat for a while.
>>
>>167927710
I would take the third option
>Archdragon Form
>counts as medium or even heavy armour
>changes your bare-handed animations
>powers up twinkling dragon stones so dragon breath now starts and ends instantly and Daimon Stand summon now works like a flashsword and has multiple attacks and combos

I just despise Iron Passage.
I managed to have fun through the game even through areas that were bland and uninteresting to look at [Huntsman Copse, No-Man's Wharf], but Iron Passage is a disgrace of an area. Like the flying buttress run from Dark Souls 1, except in a dull location, you have to do it three or four times in a row to reach the boss, there are additional Silver Knights blocking the path you take to reach the archers, and with absolutely no reasonable payoff after you finish it.

Other than that, all I can do is nitpick things like not liking how they changed the design of Undead and how covenant leaders are all plebs compared to those of the first game.

Gwyn would have known about the power of the Dark Soul, so he probably figured it's best to be buddies with the Pygmies, even if they didn't do shit against the dragons.

The Pygmies seem to be content living in the Age of Fire with their Dark Souls/Humanity, until Kaathe comes along and tries to subvert them due to knowing that they'll be the leaders in the Age of Dark (compared to Gods in the Age of Fire).

That chick holding the cracked egg is most likely the daughter, yes.
>>
>>167929148
>then the pygmies must be slightly different to humans

Humans are just the kids of the Pygmies.

The further the generations go, they seem to lose their memory of how the Dark Souls work, and their Humanity along with it (for whatever reason; whether Gods trying to subvert them or superstition and whatnot), which ends up turning them Hollow near the end of the Age of Fire.

Linear level design that doesn't feel like a 'real environment' like DS1/DS3/BB does, short levels and bonfire checkpointing instead of physical shortcuts.

Also the sluggish and unsatisfying nature of the combat, no ragdoll physics, dull lighting in areas that could be cool if you actually had a reason to use a torch.

The combat in 2 may be more tactical, but in PvE it feels less visceral, fluid and satisfying the way DS1/DS3/BB do.

I really enjoy most of DaS2 but it's also one of the most tiresome of the series. Lots of content but a lot of it is pretty damn mediocre. The lack of sense in the area progression bothers me as well but it's also sort of a pedantic issue to have with the game over other stuff.

Gameplay wise it always felt like a pretty big step up from DaS1 and I've always liked the 'feel' of the game, although DaS3 is also a pretty big improvement by comparison.

I'd definitely rather play it over DaS1 at this point, but I've developed a massive hatred of DaS1 that I just can't explain and can't stand playing it anymore, might just be burnout because I've invested by far the most time into it.

Do charged R2s in DS3 do more damage like in Bloodborne?
>that feel when Kirkhsmmer fully charged R2
>>
>>167916325
For the record, killing AF isn't what gives blues double ears. Most of the time they don't get jack shit for it. Rather, there's some unknown property about invaders in general that AF sometimes has, which results in the blue getting double ears when they kill that invader. Reds have them more often than AF, really.
>>
>>167931628
Yes, but they're not nearly as rewarding as BB charged attacks and you're often better off spamming r1 instead.
>>
Greirat can't survive Lotheric castle, right? And there's no other way to get exploding bolts?
>>
>>167931628

They do. Uncharged R2s are quite useless in DaS3, they barely do more damage than an R1.

Well from a gameplay perspective it's definitely worth it since the Handmaid just add his entire inventory to hers.
Storywise, I had my qualms with the idea at first too, but seeing his dialogue when he brings up the idea, he specifically mentions how much he does NOT want to end up a forgotten and unremarkable thief rotting at the shrine as the world ends around him, and that if he has to go out, he wants to go out in proper style.

The fact that all the areas are shitty little FFXIII style corridors that wind around annoyingly but basically funnel you in a narrow line through as much artificial padding as possible (fragrant branches being the biggest offender). They give you fuckall reason to explore, and encounters are basically just thrown here and there as toll booths to slow you down, rather than designed to be actually fun. The areas are all hastily stapled together too, and there are A LOT of them, so the game gets very long, but becomes tedious in the extreme to actually go through.

I've managed to do 10 runs or so of DaS3, despite it being "more "linear"". I could never finish DaS2 twice.

DS3 has more linear game world progression but actual levels are so fucking god-tier it fully makes up for it.
I was amazed, for example, how much ways to traverse the Settlement there is. You can skip 90% of it if you wish or go for 3 different routes to explore it that branch even further.
>>
>>167933049
I've never understood the appeal of DS2's Majula hub concept. Yes, you can choose to go to any of four directions you want. All of them are then just smaller chunks of extremely linear area progressions, and aside from Heide's and the Forest as obvious newbie areas, pretty much the same difficulty.
>>
>>167933049
That's definitely part of the reason I've gotten so much replayability out of DaS3. Nearly all the areas in the game are great and very enjoyable to go through. Plus it has the highest quality roster of bosses, at least by comparison to anything besides maybe BB.
>>
>>167931489

>>167931535

>>
>>167932829
Any success beyond killing more endlessly reanimating monsters would imply some measurable success against the inevitability of entropy, which is kind of the opposite of what the game is about.

>>167929126
Soul memory matchmaking, the incredibly flat and lifeless animations, the ugly textures and weird overall color scheme, FUCKING IRON KEEP, the fact that red vs blue didn't work at all like they planned it to, cracked red eye orbs, straight swords being too good at everything, enemies swiveling as if they were on goddamned rotating platforms, attacks that hit me despite visibly being ten feet away from my character, enemies that walk at you faster than you can backpedal and their attacks come out faster than your parry animation and also there's three of them after you (but that's just being redundant with iron keep), petrified statues arbitrarily blocking off random shit, the inconsistent as fuck world design, and the lore that did absolutely nothing to clarify anything, even within itself.

Still enjoyed the game overall, though. There was enough good going for it that it remained fun, some of the boss fights were actually really cool, spells had a ton of variety and viability unlike the other games, everything was at least functional even though ugly, and I still think Pilgrims of Dark invasions were the best shit in the whole damn series.

Overall, I'd say it's the butterface of games. You don't fuck it because it's pretty, you fuck it because it's a good fuck.

Nice to see Undead Settlement singled out, one of my favorite areas in the whole series. From the get go you have the option of going into Lothric Castle and from there Untended Graves. Later on, Road of Sacrifices fork into separate branches, one of which forks again into a semi-secret area, and later on forks again at Irithyll between Anor Londo and the Dungeon.

Really all it seems to be missing is a Darkroot Basin/Valley of the Drakes style level that connects two or three of the branches to one another, but bonfire teleportation being enabled by default made that kind of redundant..

Another problem with Majula-like hub is that developers were forced to balance areas in such a way they are very close in terms of difficulty. In DS3 there's actual difficulty curve that jumps with every major boss you defeat, in DS2 first 70% of content is balanced at around the same difficulty level which means the game gets progressively easier after you take down your first Lord.

And it's not like DS2 gives more gameplay options than 3. I would say that between early access to Lothric Castle, ability to make boss weapons in an hour of gameplay and access to Ariandel after 3 bosses DS3 has LOADS more of gameplay options for your builds since the very beginning. And with Ringed City we will get actual endgame content even for SL100-120 characters.

The big selling point of DaS1's interconnectivity is Darkroot going into everything. Post Anor Londo it drops considerably. DaS3 gets kind of an unreasonably shitty reputation on grounds of its linearity.

You have the high wall->settlement->sacrifices as the asylum->burg progression, with the option to skip to endgame through the dancer, like you could with new londo. You split into the cathedral/keep that you need to do both of, like the parish and blighttown in 1, then come back to the main path of carthus->irithyll where sen's->anor londo was before.

You can sidetrack at this point into the smoldering lake->demon ruins as you could into ash lake (or darkroot if we want to count that as the midgame area it sort of is). Then you break into Anor Londo/Irithyll Dungeon->Profaned Capital/Lothric Castle->Grand Archives for your endgame mcguffin gathering, as you did the Duke's Archives/Tomb of the Giants/Lost Izalith before.

Archdragon Peak and Consumed King's->Untended Graves are the secret and optional areas, like the Painted World of Ariamis and revisiting the Ayslum.

It's pretty much entirely presentation.

Having forks does not make something non-linear.

Going into Lothric Castle early isn't progression, since you hit a dead end until you go back and do what you were supposed to in the first place. It can't even be called a detour, it's just a dead end that stops being a dead end when you complete certain story objectives. The only reason to go there isn't plot progress, it's to get a few items early which has the added consequence of making all the Castle Lothric loot shit for the endgame since it has to be balanced for early game players getting it early. I never felt rewarded for killing Dancer early since nothing there was any stronger than my starting gear. It's just different, is all.

Cathedral of the Deep is not a fork. A fork is when you can pick either road and walk it to completion without looking back. CotD is a dead end with a necessary plot ticket, and once you get it you have to backtrack and do the other as well since you couldn't progress there without doing Cathedral. Demon Ruins isn't a fork, it's a purely optional dead end that at least has a pile of sweet loot unlike Lothric Castle. The Yhorm and Aldrich routes aren't a fork for the same reason Cathedral of the Deep isn't, it's just two different areas you have to do both of in order to progress.

Dark Souls 3 isn't non-linear for the reason that you cannot change the order in which you achieve plot objectives, at least not in any meaningful sense. The most you can do is pick which one of two necessary objectives you accomplish first before you're allowed to move on to the next set of which two necessary set of objectives you get to choose the order of doing. It's an illusion of choice, is all. Dark Souls 1 was about the same, but the first half of its world design was interconnected as fuck thanks to Darkroot and Valley of Drakes spilling over into everything else. Dark Souls 2's world design wasn't linear at all, but huge sections of it were purely optional.

It's a "cross-community" event. Meaning the guy is posting it everywhere in the hopes of having a ton of people to play with.

The thing is, I don't actually get what the end goal is. Is it just "hey guys lets have one last playthrough"? Because if that's the case, invasions are an intended part of the playthrough experience. If anything, that'd make it more interesting than a playthrough would otherwise be since invasions were basically nonexistent due to cracked eye orb fuckery.

I'll probably invade them, but purest twinking is exhausting in spreadsheet souls.

But they don't, though. So far there isn't a single known weapon in TOR that used those stats, not to mention the players weren't supposed to talk about them in the first place (vaati actually kind of broke contract on that one).

TOH and AoA preview stats looked like they were rolled up by a random number generator, even though AoA's were meant for pvp videos and to actually show off new weapons. It's bizarre.

For the same reason you can kill Dancer early and get everything up to Dragonslayer Armor, then kill Oceiros for the Path of the Dragon gesture to visit Archdragon Peak early and get all the stuff there, etc. I'm convinced Smouldering Lake is also supposed to be a late game area just based on how tough the enemies are and how powerful all the spells there are.

No lore reason, likely to be just a completely technical thing.
In DeS they had a ragdoll, in DaS they don't, in DaS2 and BB they have, in DaS3 they don't. Generally if you don't have to manually get the loot from the lizard then it just vanishes because idk, some technical issue probably.

Don't expect MGS-tier "there's a reason for everything"-worldbuilding from Souls, you'll just be disappointed.

What's the board's thoughts on these kinds of battles, what are some of the better and worst examples of each type of fight? What makes them good or bad and what could have been done to improve them?

>what makes them good?
Some sort of balancing element, like Sunken Kang's and BB's gank squads had a good arena that allowed you to separate the enemies, Abyss Watchers brought in the 3rd Watcher that attacks everyone and so on. DaS1 Gargoyles and DeS Maneaters had kind of a timing mechanism where you aren't fighting multiple full health enemies at once. Also, scripting enemies so that they go kinda in sync with the attacks like Pontiff and Homoprinces makes it more fair.

>bad?
Coupling multi-bosses with moves that go out of sync, arenas that give no cover and relentless spam of movement-limiting small mobs is no good imo.

>examples
Chalice Dungeon Rom is a pretty good example of a boss that's okay in the story but shit in the Chalices because in the restricted chalices the spiders are able to bodyblock access to Rom.

Another good example of a shit multiboss is Ruin Sentinels because again, the arena has barely any cover and the bosses can get out of sync. Or DS2 Gargoyles.

>>167940307
I consider Ornstein & Smough a good examle of a multi-boss fight because both characters have unique movesets and designs, the order in which you defeat them alters the second phase of the battle, and they serve a role that complement one another nicely. For example, you can run easily circles around Smough and never be hit by a single of its attacks, but Ornstein's moveset is mostly long-distance poking and projectiles that punish you for focusing too much on the positioning it takes to not be hit by Smough's hammer while ignoring at what distance Ornstein is at any given moment from you. On the other hand, Ornstein's attacks themselves can mostly be easily evaded by well-timed rolls or blocks, but focusing solely on that and being out of position will leave you very vulnerable to Smough's sweeping, very damaging hammer attacks or charges.

An example of a terrible multiboss fight, on the other hand, would be Double Pursuer in Drangleic castle, where the movesets are obviously not made to be stacked on top of one another, and where fighting a single Pursuer is an easy task, fighting two of them at once is probably the most unfair experience in the entire franchise.

Really it's just a dps race that tests your ability to engage multiple hard targets. Although ruin sentinels does the same thing, with somewhat less emphasis on the dps part.
>>
>>167941790
Yeah, this.
The Twin Pursuers aren't designed to be a fun or interesting challenge. It's a very simple "we tucked an obscure challenge away into some obscure corner of the game that you can willingly subject yourself to if you want a challenge." It's a very straighforward "two easy things make one hard thing" encounter and there's no concession made to less challenge-prone players to make the encounter easier or more enjoyable because that's not the point.

That said, it's also not a particularly unfair fight like that one anon is claiming. Even with two pursuers, their moveset remains slow, telegraphed and with terrible tracking that can be avoided by sprinting and strafing. The difficulty comes primarily in finding openings to attack, which seems to upset casual players who grow accustomed (and feel entitled) to enemies giving them free and clear openings if they wait long enough. When openings are less clear and more oppourtunistic, it drives casual players into a frothing frenzy. Many DaS2 bosses do this (eg. Ruin Sentinels) and those bosses tend to be the locus of "criticism" that's really just upset players whining that something was hard.

I don't really know why casual players intentionally seek out a pointless challenge tucked away in an irrelevant dead-end room in NG+ if they don't want to feel challenged. Clearly they must not hate the game as much as they say if they're so desperate for more content that they subject themselves to that.

Oh, I see. I don't think there's any separate link to download patches. Keep in mind that Dark Souls is primarily a console game ported to PC made by a company with little to no experience in PC ports. They aren't going to offer external support like that.

Unless some other PC person wants to help you out by copying the patch into a file for you, I think you might be stuck with the unpatched game. On the plus side, DaS3 was the least broken on release.

Regular ones, typically.
Auto-invade covenants always take longer than just popping an orb yourself and I tend to feel like their mechanics are either too gimmicky, or too hand-holdy.

The DaS3 auto-invader covenants, for example, skew things way too hard in favour of the host. I went into Crucifixion Woods on a level 80 +10 pvp character and popped a finger, expecting to get some activity from fully-leveled NG+ Watchdogs. Instead, I consistently caught invasions from people level 30-40 using +4 weapons. It was physically impossible to lose, even 3v1. I didn't even know the upward range was so monstrously skewed.

The Bellbongs in 2, conversely, felt like they were too skewed in favour of the invaders and were more or less the babies first invasion covenant for people that couldn't actual invasions.

Pretty much. On top of having the normal invader health penalty, watchdogs seem to prioritize the upward ends of their range and their range is massive.

I think this is also why watchdog invasions always take so long to find, even when the zone is active and you're the appropriate level. I assume how it works is that the system begins by looking for players at the maximum end of your range, stays there for a few minutes, and then very gradually expands the search downwards until it finds somebody. The DaS2 arena did the same thing, with the initial range being +/- 5 levels. After 5 straight minutes of searching, it would expand the range slightly, then search the expanded range, then expand it again after another few minutes and so on.

Watchdogs probably start at within 5 levels of the maximum they can invade and then gradually works down. Meaning if you're level 30, your matchmaking range is looking exclusively for level 40-60 for like the first 20 minutes.

Just swamprot.
I don't know if you've noticed, but most of the monsters in souls games are, or once were, humans. People transforming to suit their surroundings is like an ongoing theme.

As an aside, Hawkwkood has a special dialogue encounter at Firelink where he's outside, praying at a grave with a Farron GS propped beside it (probably his own). If you talk to him, he tells you that the Undead legion succumbed to the curse. They aren't fighting each other because they're abyss-corrupted. They just went hollow.

Even though in an interview prior to ashes of ariandel Miyazaki said the dlc will not affect the base game (self-contained), the wording being used now as well as the lore implications point to well, a whole new ending. Or at least some SIGNIFICANT implications for the current endings.

The city of the pygmies (plural) who found the dark soul?
Not to mention the painter who will make a new world entirely with THE dark soul.

Second, they're clearly not demons born of the Chaos Flame, the game multiple times drive you the point that Old Demon King and the demon at the bridge are the only actual demons left [well, before Ringed City, that is]. They've broken into the demon ruins and slaughtered whatever survivors were left, it's clear they're not the original inhabitants of the place.

This is sort of true, but the primary purpose of a sword is to cut shit. It's the most efficient way to kill someone in melee; just keep cutting them, they bleed out or go into shock extremely quickly.

Reality is on a battlefield a well-equipped knight would likely use a mace or polearm. Mace against other knights, unless they are trying to capture them.

Blightown. Until you get the spider shield, it's a pain in the ass.

Shrine of Amana and Iron Keep. Too many ranged attackers.
Maybe Earthen Peak too, if you don't know about the burning trick, the beheaded snek is a pain.

Lost Izalith is an unfinished mess, which is a shame given how beautiful the architecture looked otherwise. Tomb of the Giants is atmospheric and pretty beautiful, but fuck running around in the dark and having to fight those fucking skeletons.

Shaded Woods always pissed me off so much, fighting those invisible assholes was always a chore and you could never see where you were going because of the fog; they really should have made the torch dispel the fog in a radius around the player, like how it works in the Harvest Valley tunnels. And speaking of Harvest Valley, were it not for the desert sluts it would be up there too. Otherwise, the furnace room in Iron Keep is one of the more retarded places I've ever been.

Farron Keep is a pretty neat area, but frustrating the first time around because there's so much loot spread around, plus those fucking Ghrus. Propane Capital just feels incomplete, and fuck those screaming corpses in Irithyll Dungeon.

Notice a pattern here?

Fuck, maces are sexy as fuck.

N3 is my favorite, looks balanced a f. N4 is too short, N5-6 have the tip for stabbing, but the huge balls on the handle make me feel like weight its not balanced as gud as in N4.

Demon's Souls 5th archstone. All three parts.

First area is upper blighttown, except you can't backstab the giants, there's no poison-proof shield, the enemies like to fall on you from above, poison halves the effects of your healing items, and plague (toxic) halves it again while also halving stamina recovery. Also, your poison meter is invisible so you can't see how close you are to being poisoned. The boss is also made of leeches, covers you in leeches with every attack, and the leeches stack with poison and themselves twice.

Second area is blighttown swamp, except three times as big, you can't sprint or fastroll through it but the enemies and red phantoms can, there's actually treasure worth exploring for so you're gonna have to go out into the swamp at some point, and the red phantom that Maneater Mildred is based off actually has a really fucking strong weapon instead of a kinda shitty one. Also, same problem with invisible status meters and poison halving healing items. Oh, and there's an NPC questline here that becomes unavailable if you died at all in the area before it. The boss here is a golem made of garbage and shit who shoots flies at you from his arm cannon. The flies stack with poison, and you have to "cure" them by setting yourself on fire with the nearby torches.

Third place is everything from before, but concentrated into a single boss room and multiplied fifty times over. The boss is an immobile cleric at the other side who casts WoG and Great Heal on herself. In front of her is a plague (toxic) swamp that you can't sprint or roll through at all and has an infinite number of teleporting plague-inflicting reanimated abortions that'll bodyblock you and keep you away from the boss. The only path to the boss that doesn't go through the plague swamp is guarded by a heavy knight who makes Leeroy look like a chump by having an actually good shield and a greathammer in the game where greathammers could be reliably used in PvP.

It's just a way of visually distinguishing enemies.
Sometimes it means "This enemy type has more HP, watch out" like with the sickle hollows in the Settlement
Sometimes it means "This enemy is a strengthened variant of a normal enemy" such as with the red-eyed Lothric knights
Sometimes it's to visually distinguish that an enemy has something special going on (Abyss Watcher)
And sometimes it's just to draw attention to the eyes because you wouldn't be able to tell they were eyes otherwise (Pus of Man) or because there's some mechanic with the eyes you need to be keen to (reviving skeletons).

It's a game mechanic thing, there's no lore significance.

Each DLC has an area specifically intended for multiplayer co-op. They are optional, and are all cancer incarnate. Only Eleum Loyce's is arguably worth the effort for the greatsword that swings like a straight sword and the fashion ring. Provided you like taking giant electric horsecock up the ass all day every day, that is. Sunken City's "co-op challenge" area deserves a special mention for having a gorrilian poison statues in one room spitting at you, except instead of poison they inflict curse, and also the boss is literally a gank squad. I can't emphasize that "literally" enough. Yes, there are curse statues in the boss room.

Iron Keep is awful, but the DLC behind it is easily worth the effort.
