I think it's because the core gameplay is taken from its hack-and-slash predecessors, but the action-packed levels are replaced with "explorable" dungeons full of monsters with miniboss AI, making the game look more empty overall.

Talking about Compa... am I the only one who feels like her character is almost inexistent despite being in every game except for a few spinoffs and being Compile Heart, of all people? I mean, IF has clearly way more character, a game about her, more stuff, more interaction with other characters and even talks about her life and friends unlike Compa - who barely speaks only to make short comments or emotional reactions.
CH should just make something with Compa already, since she is in every single game...

In VII Compa is the only one with good Light-based skills, and most monsters and bosses are weak to it, so she can easily double as magical DPS. Also she has way more HP and VIT/MEN than glass cannon Rom to compensate the lack of great healing skills. In past games - Compa also was a bit of a glass cannon, but became way bulkier in VII.
She is usable, way more than previous games especially, but still a "use her if you really like her"-kind of character.

I know. I'm just complaining about their functions.

Take Dark Souls, for example. Buffs are visible on your characters, and make you hit more, or preserves you from KO once.
Take Final Fantasy VII. Buffs are visible, and lowers damage you take by a noticeable amount.

Now take Neptunia. You have no way of knowing if a character is buffed or not, and all buffs are just +X% to a stat. No spell that gives you regenerating health up to 100% of your health on 2 turns, or a spell that causes an AoE explosion if you lose too many hitpoints, or anything fancy or fun. Just stats increase that are barely noticeable.
It's like fucking Omerta where all the skills you unlocks are just stats increase.

How does it compare with those games? I didn't play Bravely Second, but the rest are also animu games focused on aesthetics, with very basic/boring mechanics. I even ended up liking Re;birth 1 and Geki Noire a lot better than FFX.

BTW if you never played the original PS2 version of FFX, I recommend that over the remake. They screwed up everyone's faces, and the game doesn't have the same feel since they had to completely re-code it. Not that I really liked either version anyway.
