I played this with friends like a year ago, is it worth getting into seriously now or still pretty linear?

Red Riding Hood or Vortex Armour?

I like using bows and ranged weapons, but I'm curious if the explosive trap gimmicks are better, or at least, fun.

Because I don't have the medals yet and we're starting to get ready for moonlord. I don't want to get all the dungeon defender medals and then immediately swap to vortex if it is that much better.

But I guess it is hard to gauge "Fun".

If you're going for a normal ranger use Vortex
If you want to invest in both summons and ranged use Red Riding Good
