I'm thinking of starting my own multi-generation fort, never done it before, usually fuck the pooch after a couple decades or sooner. Even after 12 years the FPS can become unbearable like on my current large fort.

How long do your forts usually last? How long was the longest? (For modern bloatfort) how do you keep yourself occupied for so long?

>>

>>
>>167371506
Eh, I can walk across a world, and have, I know how to move myself around with gm-editor in travel mode but it's a matter of figuring out where this is:
x: 11385
y: 8932
z: 0

...and if this is where you want:
x: 5600
y: 2300
z: 0

It's handy but it's a fiddly pain, mostly just use it to hop rivers.

Being able to do it with the quest map is handy, call it an enchanted map you got from a wizard if you want, who are you cheating against?
>>
>>167371863
fair enough
>>
>>167371931
It's damn handy and really not even remotely cheaty in the situation when you unretire and all the map is black again, you can port around and reveal it again quickly without having to guess at coordinates.
>>
>>167373683
Oh I primarily rely on legendsviewer to plan out my adventures. I barely rely on the in-game map.

I've just been using wine to run it on OpenSUSE because its easier than the convoluted wank you need to do otherwise.

been thinking of replacing it with Ubuntu recently though because it has far more tech support info online than SUSE does and soon my linux machine will be my only computer for a while at least and I need it to be reliable.

[BODY_SIZE:1000:0:25000000]
Make it like BODY_SIZE:200 or something and they'll be full grown at 200.

Wait, SUSE isn't THAT different as to not have a local version of df available, I mean, arch has a native version, and incidentally I highly recommend checking arch, the wiki is goddamn informative and though the boards are a bit assholish seeming it's partially because of "the arch way" which is basically "read the fucking manual" so they tend to cover damn near everything in anything that makes it to the official version (which is a rolling release) and usually any of the Arch User Repo (or aur) packages will be well documented too.

SUSE had so much stuff mixed in with the .rpm stuff from Fedora, I recall a local SUSE type of package management, and something else.

Well, a -buntu spin might work then, last one I messed with was actually Mint for the in-laws on their computer since they are from the "if it doesn't look like windows xp I'm lost" era, and Mint has some convenient xp style themes/setups so I could wean them away from shitbox decade old OSes.

I've used mint before and might go back to it because I liked Cinnamon more than Unity.

once I can ship my desktop over I'll be able to play around with less stable distros

Well, there isn't nearly enough info on Servant races sadly so I went with trying to get them in a somewhat functional format, still gotta flesh out the whole "good at certain jobs" stuff, but right now I'm going with:

Goblins: not as goblin-like as you'd think if you were expecting df goblins, pretty sure they've got 4 eyes, will be the most common since they're everydamnwhere.
Kind People: the four-legged dudes with the broad heads and four eyes, Mammon is one.
Trolls: the big long-haired dudes you see in the background from place to place seemed trollish enough so I went with them.
Rootless: no clue at all, but the kinda mantis-like people are servants so I made these into a sorta mantis-person conversion for now. I'll work on getting the tasks/specialty stuff flesh out as I get the entities worked in more, but now is time for rest after all the research and fiddling around looking for that glorious moment when you load the arena and the errorlog.txt stays empty.

Naturally I'll need a fallback setup for the sense-creature icons for folks who don't want to use the tileset, but for now it's the 5 demon masks on the top, with demiurges on the right, un angel towards the lower middle, a master of cutting (and thus royalty) with her key lower left-ish, male/female humans (warm black flame=black smiley), and the four servant races (cool white flame=white smiley) above them.

Fucking Rumrusher.

I wanted to be able to jump around like a ninjer weaboo faggit and started working on turning propel into launch, Rum added a way to fling people you are wrestling with, hilarious stuff.

Then they made a telekinesis version to fling items, but you gotta tab over to the terminal instead of using a hotkey, neither of us could figure that out, so they found a way to kinda kick an item out from under you towards the cursor.

Works on minecarts too, but it might end up leading to some sort of eldritch horrors noticing due to the weird way it fucks with the universe itself.

The troll punched the bear in the gut and made him uncontrollably vomit. Eventually the bear charged the troll, which knocked him over and stunned him. The bear used the opportunity to retreat, and they've not gone back at it yet. If I had to put my money on the rematch though, I think the troll will win.

As an update, they did start fighting again and the bear absolutely fucked up the troll, but there was never anything more than minor injuries to either party. I'm not sure either one is even capable of killing the other. They fight for like 3 pages and then over exert themselves and collapse, afterwards they just fuck off and lick their wounds. I think the bear is bugged though, as the only thing he does is scratch. If he could actually bite, I think he'd win handily.

I like seeing full ecosystems, not like rimworld were it's always the same handful of creatures
Though you're right we have a ton already where most are just space filler
Animal men as well
I'd like to see more attention given to animal/animal men
Maybe more "natural" so while they're spawned so they hunt and feed like real creatures

And animal men "civilizations" could use some work, maybe give them actual little villages and a way for your fort to interact with them if they're friendly
Maybe even adopt them like human civs do sometimes
>>
>>167446069

>>167446676
>>167446470
I was thinking more along the lines of resulting dynamics, like population cycles, and necessity to hunt for food (or find grazing grounds) not just a simple hostility flag.
>>167446805
>animal men "civilizations" could use some work
In my opinion the problems with animal civs, FB's, were-beasts, giant/men variants, vampires and undead are all the same: their ridiculous abundance makes them really mundane. If they would exist in much lower numbers and not in every world, encountering any of those would be much more interesting instead of being just another day-to-day mechanic.

As one of DF's strength is its emergent storytelling, I feel that this is an important point.
A vampire in your fortress doesn't make a very interesting story if it happens to every player every goddamn fortress, often multiple times.

Although I have high hopes that the myth generation will allow us to easily not only set the degree of "supernatural-ness" but also the frequency of such supernatural occurrences for a given setting.
So you can decide between "slightly supernatural - commonplace" and slightly supernatural - very rare".

>>167445130
>>167446069
>>167446805
I agree entirely. We need quality more than quantity, and quantity of species makes it more difficult to improve quality. I honestly wouldn't have minded if instead of adding lots of real world plants and animals Toady had made all the flora and fauna somewhat divorced from reality but with much more developed characteristics and interactions.

>>167448158
I'm hoping that the fantasy slider will be a lot more complicated than just a one-dimensional slider of "more fantasy" or "less fantasy" since nobody's going to agree on exactly what that would mean. It's a good point you make about frequency and overabundance though, except that I think I disagree about giant animals. I think it makes enough sense for certain parts (and ONLY certain parts) of the world to be chock full of terrifying beasts, so long as it's something special about that place and not something that can be easily tamed or exported. But yeah, for the most part, encountering a lot of things like FBs shouldn't be so routine as it generally is right now. It's kind of ironic that "forgotten" beasts being so common have gotten some people to FORGET that megabeasts, titans, etc are technically different, calling them all forgotten beasts.
>>
When is toady going to give a fuck about sieges? Right now I've got my drawbridges down with a clear path into my fortress that is full of fat juicy dwarves and these goblin invaders are just wandering around where they came in at, soon to wander off the edges never to be seen again I'm sure. I could send my militia after them, but that defeats the entire fucking point of the fortress.
>>
>>167451228
>you might want to submit Relicwebs to the bug tracker
I plan to at some point. There is a lot of weirdness with the extreme verticality of the map, although the climbing is probably the worst of it. I have a whole folder full of saves to demonstrate one bug or another, but they're poorly labelled and it will be a lot of work to figure out what's what and make good reports for them. Plus I don't want to put Relicwebs "out in the wild" before it's ready. There's stuff going on that I've never posted that will be more fun for you guys to explore if it isn't spoiled before I offer up the save.

>>
>>167460281
Getting the creatures in has been tricky since a lot of the information simply isn't available, I've got the main races though, a framework to build on for devil binding, crazy swordsmanship, and goddammit the angels are fucking terrifying as shit to fight. Like seriously fuck that shit.

Pretty sure I'll be able to get each demiurge to take over their own civ via the [POWER] tag and lining up spheres, I'll mix the different races around to get a varied world that way.

Still need some of the flavor stuff for the demiurge abilities, and figuring out how to get it fully set up with a playable fort mode at some point.

I'll probably try to get some of the other important devils and angels in as semimegas for additional flavor.

I'm pretty sure I can get the devil binders AND art of cutting practitioners to go around teaching their secrets and setting up towers properly, so that's nice.

Still wanna get keys that can be linked to companions/stolen/etc, but thankfully the entity and interaction stuff will just build on a lot of the creature work I did already.

Lost a human spearman because he jumped down off the wall and was immediately swarmed by ~30 melee goblins. A goblin hammer dude kept smacking him in the upper arms which was only being protected by a cloak since I never saw a message saying his chain mail deflected anything, despite wearing masterwork large steel chainmail. After he got hit with two paralyzers and dropped his shield and spear, he lasted till the end of the battle as his armor deflected nearly everything, but he bled out before he could make it back to the hospital. One of my axedwarves followed him off the wall though and was only surrounded by a few goblins, prompting him to enter a martial trance and turn into a whirlwind of gore and severed limbs. Alas, he could not save his human friend.

Yar, since only a fool would learn the ways of the sword, but women are traditionally the best at the sword so it's a human female caste with the extra maybe sword limbs so they can just fling out flurry of death attacks.

You could hack off all four limbs at damn near the same time, but since I made them small/internal they aren't targetable/visible, which is great.

Only thing that scares me when I'm running around as a fully skilled up destroyer is an angel, they're still a really fucking tough fight since the blades keep skittering off their armor.

The first poster has it right and the other two are seriously missing out. Lemme tell y'all why dragons are objectively the best and scariest (from an in-character perspective) megabeasts in the game.

Rocs are nothing but overgrown birds that mature at 20 years and are subject to all the failings of any animal.

Bronze Colossi are strong, but they were formed that way in the beginning of the world and will never grow again. Their substance can only be chipped away, never replaced.

Hydras are formidable, but the severing of a single head can do great damage to the whole, and they are far smaller than other megabeasts as well.

But dragons are something else. First off, you must understand that Dwarf Fortress dragons are not traditional dragons. They breathe fire and are reptilian, yes, but they have no wings. They are lumbering, quadrupedal hulks of scale and incredibly dense muscle that tower over everything. But the intimidating thing is, this doesn't happen overnight. To quote the wiki:

>At 23 years, a dragon is the size of a giant cheetah.
>At 100 years, a dragon is the size of a draltha.
>At 200 years, a dragon is the size of an elephant.
>At 320 years, a dragon is the size of a hydra.
>At 800 years, a dragon is the size of a bronze colossus or an adult roc.

Thereafter, a dragon is the largest predator found on land.

If you see an adult dragon, then you are looking at an organism that grew to full strength over the course of a thousand agonizingly slow years, each one having been filled with brutal warfare, questing knights, and battles with other gigantic monsters. This monstrosity has survived it all and has amassed a kill count along the way that goes well into the hundreds. And now you, a mere mortal man who perhaps has a handful of friends to support him, is staring it right in the face.

Really, what makes you think you'd ever stand a chance?

I agree that the 1000 year growth rate is a good thing, shortening it just seems kind of lame and ruining the entire magic of the Dragon.

but they are "traditional" dragons, not every dragon has wings.

for some reason cave dragons do though

>>
>>167478406
>for some reason cave dragons do though

Funny that.

You know, the dragon pic I included actually has some significance in regards to that. He was the antagonist of a children's book in which most dragons were winged. He was much bigger than them and had no wings, and wished to devour them all. The winged dragons stood no chance against his strength, and so all they could do was hide in the far reaches of the world, hoping they wouldn't be found.

One could surmise that a similar event occurred within the universe of Dwarf Fortress. In a time before time, the winged dragons were driven far under the ground but their larger, meaner cousins, and atrophied into the cave dragon we see today.

maybe, they are significantly more common
or maybe the underground is just a much more fruitful habitat with far fewer dangers beyond the odd Forgotten Beast
I think they were probably just dragons who would nest in caves and eventually became fully subterranean

Hydras should be like they're in DCSS where if they're hit with a bladed non-flaming weapon such as an axe or a sword a head is cut off and two more grow in its place.

I wouldn't call the industries described in the pic as overly complicated.

First, all of them follow a pretty simple logic, and just a vague understanding of how things are made IRL should make it easy to produce them in the game. On the most basic level, every person with a working brain should know that wooden items are made by carpenters in any pre-industrial society. The division between masonry/carpentry and stonecrafting/woodcrafting is a bit more arbitrary, but it's not that important to learn early on.

Second, half of the things mentioned aren't necessary to set up a working fort. They're comfy additions when you manage to set up their respective industries, but nothing a new player has to drop the game in frustration over. Glass is a perfect example of this. We generally make glass windows because they're comfy, not because they're useful (even though they have some practical uses). The only thing that you absolutely need glass for is aquariums, and even those are a luxury that a fort will do just fine without.

Pic related is my next megaproject, by the way. It's a shame that ville contemporaine and ville radieuse never became reality, but we should at least be able to realise Corbusier's dream in DF.

no, he's shitting up the modding community by making all modders work for him for free, while he's getting big donation shekels. modders don't dare to say no to him, because they know that 99% of all players just download his pack under the assumption that "all important mods are there".

it's unclear what he even needs all the money for, considering that he said in an AMA that comes from a rich family and makes big money leasing out family owned flats.

he also has the nerve to beg his players for money to pay for his psychotherapy after having a mildly bad time on one of his numerous luxury vacations.

he gets money from sponsors who pay him to use their stuff when he travels. one condition for these sponsorships is that he keeps some kind of log or blog where he uploads photographs he took at different locations.

I guess he just lost some of those photographs.

according to a popular rumour, all his masterwork stuff was on the drive, severly delaying the next release. I haven't found any proof for this, though.

>>
>>167504082
he doesn't have sponsors as a modder.

he has this gimmick where he goes bicycling around the world (essentially perpetual vacationing). he gets sponsored for that.

he's known to constantly mix up his roles as a "world bicyclist" and a modder, and often uses mod donation money to pay for his trips (he said it on an AMA). and like I said above, when he got robbed in Lebanon, he begged the players of his mod to compensate him for the things he lost.

Nope, the worst you'll have to face is bronze or iron, you won't even have to fight against steel. This means that you basically will never have to worry about an edged weapon going through your steel plate, so the upgrade to adamantine would be pretty pointless, even if it weren't for the next point: steel's much higher mass relative to adamantine helps it to absorb the blunt force of all attacks, including the blunt force caused by an edged weapon being successfully blocked by the armour, so your troops will take less bruises, cuts, and the like in combat. It is useful to have addy mail, as non-rigid armour like that can't block blunt damage anyway, and it will block the incredibly rare attacks that might have a chance of punching through a steel breastplate.

Weapons are what addy is best for though. An addy blade basically treats all armour as if it's not there (besides shiny blue armour, but you will never ever encounter an enemy wearing it unless you engineer the enemy yourself). It can also cut clean through enemies made of stone and metal. So use your addy for blades, and only start making other things with it when literally everyone who you could ever want to use a bladed weapon is wielding adamantine.
Sidenote: do not make adamantine blunt weapons! Absolutely useless things. Silver and steel are the best for blunt.

Also there is the chance to find large armor in abandoned forts. Like a... 100% chance sometimes.
>>
>>167523739
The armour found in dorf fort bedrooms is human sized. It only shows up as "large" for a dorf. For a grizzly man, it'd most definitly show up as "small" armour, just like all other human sized armour.
>>
>>167521074
steel forgotten beasts and titans are still a thing.
>>
>>167525310
Yes, which translates to blunt impacts by (extremely large) steel weapons, something you can mitigate best with steel plate. And isn't it a good thing that you used your addy for bladed weapons so that you actually have something that can damage this steel monster? I mean the only thing that can do meaningful damage to a steel creature is an adamantine blade, after all.

t. lost two forts to steel FBs before resolving to equip my dwarves with adamantine axes.
>>
>>167521074
Do you not believe the speed advantage your dwarves get from super lightweight adamantium armor is worth it? If you outfit them in adamantium, you can afford to put 6 cloaks on them and 4 hoods and all the other shit since they won't be moving like a maimed turtle.

>mods that add only a few things and yet the raws are embedded in vanilla raws/the download is the entire dwarf fortress folder
>>
>>167526039
Nope, don't think so at all. A legendary armour user will move in full steel plate as if it were cloth, and let's face it, you probably aren't handing addy out to raw recruits. Besides, if you're even contemplating the kind of industry required for full addy armour all around, you probably have time to train your dwarves properly. Basically, (confirmed by extensive arena tests) a legendary dwarf in steel with addy mail will generally beat a legendary dwarf in full addy, provided they're both using steel or worse for their weapons (iron or worse if their weapons are spears or large daggers). I mean, when they're both raw recruits, sure, the addy armour wins because the steel armour user exerts himself faster, but this isn't a thing that happens to a dwarf who's been sparring nonstop for a couple of years (or had all his stats raised to max by arena fuckery).

So basically, ironically, the only time you want full addy armour is when you're planning on equipping raw recruits with it. Which I should hope is never.
>>
>>167526598
Also I should point out that an unconscious dwarf with an addy helm will get his head pulped much faster than a dwarf with a steel helm. Neither helm can be penetrated properly by anything that hits them but the "death by a thousand cuts" happens much more quickly due to the inability of addy to dampen bluntforce properly.

Ok, to the bastard fuck that has made me get into KSBD by making a mod out of it

fake first/0. Fuck you. For real. I already procrastinate too mch for my own good. I didnt need to get addicted to a semi-philosophical, highly emotionall-well drawn webcomic
Fuck you and the horse you rode on

First, why does everybody know fucking everything of the story, the weird religion and the seven gods when we are so early on the story? The comment section is weird as fuck

Second, why is every fucking character on this webcomic a female, seriously, its ruining my inmersion, pol shit aside

Third, why have a seen the whole webcomic in one sitting in just one afternoon, this wasnt a good idea

fourth, is angel guy/girl gonna betray Allyson?

and fifth, Is Ciolysson confirmed by now?

When I know the answers to these questions I'll be freed from anguish
>>

Oh god, I just saw the comment sections' dates

Please tell me that the fuck of a drawer does not put a pic of the webcomic each month
I'll kill myself right here, I swear
>>
>>167547302
Sorry, it's great though.

Second lots of people discover it way later on and then go back and comment on things, and a lot of the background parts of the story are actually taken from comments and suggestions.

Third, it's addictive, yeah, imagine how those of us who discovered it a year or so back felt waiting for updates.

Fourth, they were ordered to do so, what that means is hard to say.

Fifth, Cio is shipping CioxAllison in her fanfic-ship on a ship.
>>
>>167547432

Oh, women have earned a name as the best users of the sword, blue devils are generally female, red seem more male, jade are weird, gold are weird, ebon seem to be a mix but we've only seen like two plus some shadowy outlines, Zaid, Incubus, Zoss, Jagganoth, Mammon, Solomon, angels don't really have full genders, but 2 Michael and Metatron 1 are both masculine, the previous Lord Om who Allison blew up to Mottom's chagrin was male, as we see more of the white flame inheritors (angels/servants) we'll see more masculine characters I expect, as they are from the god Ys, the black flame inheritors (humans/devils) descend from the goddess Un and that's mostly what we've been dealing with besides the handful of angels we've met.

And for like the doors, I should disble allowing pets through? Though most dogs and cats sit in my dining hall.

My fort ended up dying to the siege anyway... Time to start again.

Are small or pocket sized worlds that much better in terms of FPS? Or is it negligible.
>>
>>167568489
You should allow pets through as far as I know, or they get stuck pathing. As for world size, wiki says there's a certain impact but it doesn't look like anyone knows how much, I've asked this before and didn't get a satisfactory answer, if any at all.

My forts are usually on small or medium worlds, and although I can't pinpoint what the issue is, often forts in a smaller embark and with less population start dropping in fps or getting clunky out of nowhere. Lately I've been playing 3x3s with a controlled population, works fine for longevity, I've tried betting against the Toad and it never works.

What are some of the strangest/most interesting mods you've made?

I once modded in Tanuki (pic related).

Inspired by a discussion in the forums, I also made an adventurer reaction "shit bricks", which produces a block of worthless custom material.

In the same vein I also made a mod for teabagging corpses.

And finally, I modded in the double club and the manure golems from this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WA5bq29-Xis

I made dwarf sized/shaped dragons and forgot to look at those tags at the end where it sets all the tissues and materials a really high melting/boiling point, right?

Started an adventurer, looted a mead hall, put on a bronze helm, walked outside.

>grass catches on fire
>burst of boiling bronze
>what the shit?

My tears kept melting my helmet off, I fixed that but later discovered that I could spit on people and set them on fire, so I left that in.

Used it as an assassination tool, the molten loogie of death.

>Oh no, did one of your hearthpersons just spontaneously combust?

>What are some of the strangest/most interesting mods you've made?
Imagine punching somebody so hard that they turn into a door. Then you found out that's where ALL doors come from, and you got initiated into a murder club that makes doors. The stronger you punch, the better the door. So there are like super strong murderers who punch people into Venetian doors and shit.
>>
>>167663940
So if two of these murderpunchers had a little girl who took after her parents would she be a-door-able?

It's possible to set a creature to leave an item behind instead of a corpse when it dies. That's why bronze collossi leave statues behind, for example.

To my knowledge, it's NOT possible to have an interaction that turns people into items (and believe me, I've looked for it).

It should be able to turn them into a certain "door monster", however. And you should be able to set the door monster to leave a door behind when it dies.

Still, I'm 90% sure the original post was trying to trick us.
>>
>>167666323
>it's NOT possible to have an interaction that turns people into items
Huh, that's strange. You'd think if we are able to turn items into creatures then we would also be able to do vice versa, especially because turning creatures into items seems a lot more simple.

It's been years since I've used PerfectWorld, but it's likely something about the amount of large evil biome tiles.

I remember disabling those. The puke-coloured ocean looks disgusting.

I feel like you should get a bad reputation for doing this sort of stuff, like you won't get any visitors to your tavern, merchants will give you slightly harder bargains, and you may even receive threats from other civs or even the mountainhome.

I hope I live to see the day dwarf fortress is finished :o

that should only happen if nobody talks/knows about that
I liked the idea that you could have certain nobles dedicated to dark affairs(torturers, assasins, etc.) that wouldnt talk about the evil deeds of the fort (i.e they remain silent)
you would have a fixed ammount of possible nobles of this kind so you wouldnt make all of your citizens a silent group of conspirators
>>
>>167684076
Thats a good idea, governments have their own networks of people who do bad stuff in the name of good, without the rest of us knowing much about it. It would make sense for this to work similarly in df.

I modded in destroyers as a learnable/teachable secret, the art of cutting, they've got extra limbs to perform slash attacks at hyperspeed using their sword skill, they use the godbone material properties of demiurges, and are super fast, with their own class of gaits (angels have their own gaits as well) so they can stride forth and feel the ground crack beneath their feet--metaphorically speaking--yet I am still terrified of these angels.

If I'm armored up and skilled up and get good enough combat rolls in my favor I can probably kill one, but it's far from certain, and the biggest difference between a master of cutting and a regular human swordmaster is that after the angel kicks my arm off and punches me across the screen, I'll be able to stand back up, usually (>>167565308) but not always (>>167565407) so yeah, they make great peace keepers: you goddamn definitely want to be peaceful as fuck when an angel is around.

They're not the same civ. Dark fortress is the name of the site. The race indicates which civ controls it. So a "dark elven fortress" is a dark fortress controlled by an elven civ whose occupants will continue to behave like an elven civ.

Weremammoths.
I never lost a fort to a were, that's kind of .40+ thing. Before then they would usually arrive untransformed. And they didn't stealth then either, so you would get the normal popup announcement for them on the edge of the map instead of whereever they got caught. I never even saw a transformed werebeast until four or five forts in, and by then I was proficient enough with military that they weren't much of a threat.

hehe sucks for you then

also I mentioned before my attempt to write a bunch of books on life and death with my adventurer then drop them off by a retired fortress (as well as various towns)

when I reclaimed the fort a bunch of my dwarves were nice friendly necromancers

the issue was that the undead they would re-animate at every opportunity were not as friendly.

I got in the habit of locking up my meat products well and moving my necromancers to other parts of the fort.

it went pretty well until a seige arrived and a minor issue of killing a few goblins turned into a big fight against an army of zombie gobbos and their various body parts.

my fort is now basicly all undead with just a few necromancers still hanging around doing their jobs

Their attributes are (supposedly) fixed, not their skills. Every creature has a hard cap on attribute gain, so most creatures aren't much better off than a necromancer in that regard, and a training-montaged adventurer isn't going to lose much at all from it.

Hmmm, so far I can manage to get 4 out of the 7 demiurges to take over the right civ, one usually ends up living in the woods (gotta give them a lair or they can't be capped with megabeast limits), while the other two end up taking over the wrong civs entirely.

A guard, confused again, ran over and demanded the location of the figurine. The lord was like, "Over my dead body!" They would have started fighting if I didn't break out to debug. I think in this case the guard didn't understand furniture, and also didn't think about their loyalties in the context of item encounters, and so flipped out when the item became "invisible". I'll keep smoothing it out! I've also cleaned up some other random issues.

>complaining about muh UI is high quality discussion
Are you by any chance the anon who always drops in, complains about how the game got worse, and then tell anyone who disagrees to "get off Toady's dick"?
>>
>>167745118
No it isn't. It's a "funny" though misinformed article. Half the things he says in it aren't true.
DF has plenty of interface issues, but that article is bad.

There are numerous, grave issues with the UI, and the article tackles one of the biggest issues - control consistency and convenience in menus. But this "article" is so short, focusing only on one menu and so shallow in that it doesn't properly analyze just what is wrong with it all or how it could be improved, that it's just disappointing. It's not an article, it's a fucking blog entry of someone complaining about something, impressively shown by the text being structured like a fucking standup comedian routine.

I'm not trying to defend DF here - he's absolutely right in everything he says, but what's with the quality of this piece? Who wants to read these incoherent ramblings?
Doesn't the author (and more importantly the editor) have any kind of standards?
>Here’s a picture of a numpad for reference
Who even is the target audience here? Wasn't RPS focused on PC gaming some years ago? What PC gamer doesn't know what a numpad looks like?
>>
The UI is the only thing keeping retards away from the game, I believe in Toady's capacity not to let normalfags completely ruin DF, but I wouldn't bet on it.

I dread the day he actually decides to change it, all this garbage constantly complaining about therapist update will become the norm. There's no community capable of surviving popularity, they all turn to shit.
>>
>>167746730
It's the cracked.com audience they're after.
>>
>>167747258
Even though I don't share your hatred for "normies"(I happen to be one), I largely agree with your sentiment.

In EVERY online review I've seen of the game, there are 10+ entitled shits in the comments who say:
>"I would have given your quaint little game here a try, if it didn't have such an awful UI"

Well, don't. It's not like the community here will miss them. Toady makes enough from his donations to live an upper middle class lifestyle, so it's not like he'll miss them either.
>>
>>167744359
Why do people bitch and moan about the interface so much? Even though it can be slightly confusing at times, it really isn't a big deal.
>>
>>167748654
it's a "want dorf but can't dorf" kinda thing.

people with a short attention span get lured to the game by the stories, then they get butthurt when they realise that they're gonna have to put some effort into learning it.
>>
>>167748798
That makes sense.
Also aside from the +- 82 arrow keys etc. stuff the interface is actually pretty efficient once you memorize. Like simply [b][b], to build beds.
>>
>>167748798
I wish people would play video games because they were interested in the gameplay.
>>
>>167749049
Gameplay and aesthetics go hand in hand.
I think you need both.
That's why I always bitch out that one anon whenever he starts complaining about there being too many types of wood.
The music, art, story, etc. of games is important, and so is the gameplay/mechanics.
DF actually has a good aesthetic (party because of the sotries) as well as fun gameplay. If the creatures were just called "creature 1", "creature 2" instead of dwarf, elf, etc. then it would be a less enthralling I think, even though it wouldn't affect the "gameplay" per se.
>>
>>167747694
But what if Toady decides he isnt content with the 4k a month he gets on patreon?

He could decide to dumb it down to lure in a wider audience that will bring more money to his patreon
>>
how do you get dwarves out of trees?
i tried building ramps but it didnt seem to work

>>
>>167748798
I can agree with this

I started playing a week ago, the menus were quite daunting at first but after a while of just fucking around and building a shitty fort I was able to get good at navigating them and learning more about the game
>>
>>167749347
Listen to his talks.

His artistic integrity is clearly reinforced by his extreme autism. He simply lacks the cognitive ability to even consider dumbing it down.

I did not know about this, it seems toady is actually a man of great integrity, rare in the games industry

Yes he is based as fuck.
>>
>>167636208
Those were removed at least in the sense that they don't appear in-game.
I was thinking about this earlier. If he was to add sex using actual genitals, then I feel like he would feel pressured to add rape, and he (or in my opinion mainly Threetoe) doesn't want to add rape, based on what he's said.

But honestly I hope he adds shit, piss, and consensual sex at least.
>>
>>167750161
Its also possible he doesnt feel like including descriptions of each monster and spider-persons genitals
and all of the various cross-breed children people would ask to be included if sex was in the game
>>
>>167750161
And I hope the consensual sex and pregnancy involve semen actually interacting with the womb.

That way in adventure mode:
>You thrust into the elf child's vagina with your penis, bruising the skin.
>You orgasm!
>Your human semen is injected into the elf child's vagina.
>Your human semen is injected into the elf child's uterus.
>>

>I hope Toady adds """""consensual""""" sex with children
