Hey are there any good guides/books on doing 2D isometric games in unity? I am thinking of making something like classic fallout esque

Not like Wasteland 2 or really low res Wasteland as both art wise and mechanics wise I didn't find them fun

I finally figured out what my game is going to be.

Over the shoulder 3rd person RPG, set in modern time. World spanning adventure. Your character joins a secret society and fights demons, ghosts, and other monsters from mythology. You are not a normal human though, you have magic power and can become supernaturally strong, fast, skilled and can cast magic spells.

This is gonna be great.

I don't get agdg jams. Jam is announced. people immediately start working on it and posting progress. 2-4 weeks later Jam officially starts.

am I wrong or is that not how jams work?
>>

It's not. But /agdg/ needs the extra time, because they're amateurs

>>167356219
I don't get it either. Like with Demo Days. What the fuck even is the point. They announce it 2 months in advance, there's not even any theme, and there's only like 3 days to submit a game. People just submit any old bullshit they're working on. How is this even a jam?
>>
>>167356320
fine by me, but lets ditch the "Jam starts in x days!" bullshit. soon as jam theme is agreed upon, jam begins.
>>
Reminder that googem is a literal nigger.
>>
>>167356450
I always like the idea of the final boss being in view but you need to do so much work to actually get there. Its a good way to set goals for the player without actually telling him what to do.
>>
I am going to start with my game in a few days. I am ill and want to chill and get more input.
Using Unity 2D jump &run with shooting (like megaman, just say spiritual successor if I get it)
Maybe 2D art, maybe 3D models, but most likely pixel I am not sure. I can´t draw so most important stuff right now is gameplay and coding

But my question is this:
How should I keep my dev blog/catalog or whatever? This is my first own software.
How do you guys handle it? Word document with : 1. Gameplay 1.1 mechanics 2. codes 3. Story 4. Levels etc. ?
>>
>>167356483
The point is to make an event that people are interested in enough that they can provide feedback. The duration between the days is so that devs have time to incorporate that feedback.

There's no theme because why would a thread-event have a theme when the thread's topic pertains to all amateur game development.
>>
>>167356450
area 6 seems like an absolute pain to get there
long corridor is kinda boring
>>
>>167356657
Why is it a jam if it doesn't have a theme and people just keep submit the same games to each one?
>>
>>167356829
Why do towns and cities have gatherings in their squares ever so often where anyone can sign up and attend? To draw crowds.

All they've got right now is 'jams'.

To clarify: don't add a general warp system. just add doors between say, section 6 and section 5. Make the placement a bit unusual to encourage exploration. Reduce the longest walks, but still keep it comfy. Essentially make the world loop.

Really figuring out the shortcut stuff now. So, there will be a core path through the game, that includes obvious shortcuts. The shortcuts divide the game into segments of increasing difficulty. And these shortcuts you can find without thinking too hard, they're obvious. But then there are extra short cuts, that are harder to find, and harder to remember how to use. But if you do put forth the effort then you save yourself a lot of work by not having to replay parts of a segment.

As a longtime metroidvania fan in the original sense (SoTN and post-SoTN CV's), you'd have to be retarded to think that area warping negatively affects the game.

I don't find programming particularly difficult, I just don't enjoy the process of figuring out frameworks and libraries. It takes some time to become familiar with a library or framework. Usually I like to see a high level view of all the things it is capable of, and then figure out the details when needed. Also sometimes useful to just go through it at a high level if you're facing a problem, seeing if it has any tools that would help solve it.

I noticed throughout my education (Bach in Comp Sci) that some people are not cut out to program. They just don't get it. I have a strong background in mathematics so it helped me quite a bit to understand how to go about these.

I also think to be a good programmer you need to THINK like a computer. This sounds weird, but hear me out: You know the quick inverse squareroot that came out of Idsoft? With the magical numbers? A programmer that is good at their craft should try to program like a computer would write its native "tongue".

Its a weird mentality but I always try to get rid of common sense and logic at programming and really think about what I am trying to do.

On the idea of the "wrong way", this is very natural. One of the main problems I had when I started to do this game deving as a hobby was that I never knew what was the right way to organize and to break my code into sections and etc. I eventually realized that I should just do it and see if it worked. If it did that's great. If it didn't then I know more about what is the right way of doing it afterward.

Always remember: Your code will never work the first time.

Shit this was long.

I'm a CS graduate and even though I always managed to easily complete my assignments and my thesis in uni, as well as programming at work, when I'm at home I can't program at all. I become paralyzed with the idea of the growing complexity of a program that I will have to deal with by myself and dread sets in, I end up not even starting most of the time. I tried joining in on some OSS projects, but the only ones that interest me also feel like they're way beyond my level.

I feel inadequate as a programmer to be honest, most people in uni were programming since their teens, I only learned to program when I got into uni and even then I hardly ever did it outside of assignments and uni projects. Dealing with those people that knew a lot more than I did made me feel like shit, and of course it gave me a desire to improve, but whenever I seemed to catch up with them they had already moved on to greater and harder things and I was always left behind, feeling like a dumb retard.

It's probably all my fault though, I only went into CS because I never really got into anything in my pathetic life other than using computers, even though I was never proficient at it to begin with, I only used computers to play video games.

Sorry for the blog.

CS / English Comp dual B.S. here. The correct mindset to go into programming -- hobbyist programming, professional programming has a lot of compromise due to time constraints, etc -- is to be in a creative mindset. I find that a lot of people go into programming wanting to do things the "right" way, and get hung up on making sure that their code is """"correct"""".

The reality is that, especially in today's age where you don't need to work with ridiculous hardware constraints, you need to cast aside the notion that there is one right way to do things and everything else is inefficient. Just like there are a hundred ways to tell the same story, there are a multitude of ways to correctly architect and program something.

Instead of letting the fear of doing things incorrectly paralyze you, you need to let the excitement of architecting and implementing a solution energize you. You need to embrace creativity in coding in order to enjoy it. There's an art to it anon.

You basically described how I was in university. I also couldn't get myself to do anything after school related to the field. I also had friends who did weird shit like fuck with kernels or set up a server, etc. These guys are a minority in the long run.

I only was motivated to program when I finally got a job. Even the game Im deving right now takes effort to get anything done every day.

In the end your degree will mean nothing in the long run, only your accomplishments. Find a job and start working, even if its front end html or some shit. Even QA is good to get into the field.

And the hard part: do programming on your own. A project that you made and you accomplished on your own is a huge sign on your CV that says this guy gets shit done. I helped hire at a company I worked at and we all knew that a degree meant shit, its what you did hands on as a programmer.
>>
>>167364508
>I noticed throughout my education (Bach in Comp Sci) that some people are not cut out to program
I'm always surprised when I see that some people are just incapable of applying basic programming knowledge to make something slightly more complex. Like some of my uni friends still don't get the point of functions or even loops. The only thing they learn is to copy a fully written program and compile it to be honest. Pretty much 'hello world!' level shit.

>>
>>167366789
Nope its perfect. As long as you coded it then its fine. It just shows initiative to do things on your own in the field. They like that shit.

In my opinion, games are some of the most complex computer programming projects one can make. It combines all sorts of different aspects, physics, art, lighting, graphics, gameplay.

Don't be afraid to let the breasts spread out beyond the ribcage. They look constrained by an invisible bra there. They also feel a little low on the chest.

Hips and legs are looking good but the shoulders are a little wide unless you're looking for a more androgynous look.

Also, mind the thickness of the arm as it transitions into the wrist. Her arm gets a little too thin - or the wrist is a little thin. Either way, it doesn't match the proportions of the rest of the arm.

The shin area is a little odd too. On the outside line, it should be pinching in with the knee but you're showing it as bulging outwards and staying flat by it.

I have exactly the same story. Like, exactly.

It's weird how useless a programming degree is on its own. All of the basic knowledge you get of algorithms and how computers work will make you a better programmer, but it won't teach you how to program. Now I'm trying to get a job after graduating and employers are just as aware of the deficiencies of the education as we are, and so I'm having to work on a portfolio which I should've completed in college in order to get a basic entry level job.

And it's fucking hard. When you had to program something crazy in school, they lined it out for you. They told you the functions to use and sometimes even the order to use them in, and they just let you sort out the details. Most importantly, you always KNEW it was possible to do what you wanted to do with the tools you had. So, they were good exercises for understanding the concepts, but they didn't teach you how to program.

There's just this major expectation/reality mismatch with a programming degree. Not like I regret my time in college, but I think that if you want to be a programmer and you're resourceful enough to self-teach, you're better off doing it that way

Torpedo Dodger - all there in the name

this week and last:
-implemented separate hit boxes for bow, aft, admidships
-fixed lots of broken and stupid shit and implemented some dedicated debug functions
-learned how to do version control
-implemented echelon torpedo pattern
-improved torpedo hit detection
-implemented 'tactical ring' to notify of incoming offscreen torpedoes
-ship movement feels more shiplike
-found myself enjoying challenge of test scenario

The tactical ring thing is the first thing about this game that seemed legitimately cool and video-gamelike. I know that mathematically a circle and a line segment may intersect, but seeing it play out in real time, updating every frame, is amazing. I'm not a particularly experienced programmer so it's sort of like magic.

I just love these shaders. But I can't figure out just what they're doing as screen-space and what is a fragment shader. There's clearly tons of depth buffer value usage here. But I'm starting to think that they also use the normal of the geometry to determine the strenght of the fog (the [insert color] fade effect on practically everything).
I'd like a slightly cleaner look.

Also I wonder if they intentionally left anisotropic filtering off for this mode or if that's just what they did in general. It's the PS3 afterall.

Does GML have bit operators? You can check the first bit, if it's on it's always odd, otherwise it's even.

Mod is a better solution though.
>>
>>167370516
Why do you need something faster than a mod? If it is an extremely trafficked operation, that is somehow causing stress on your code, you can use a lookup table for even numbers. This assumes the numbers will be within a sane range.

But it's extremely unlikely that the mod operation is actually having any performance impact whatsoever.

Combat is quite a bit tougher now, since i worked over the AI and animation blending.
Actually two of these guys can currently badly wreck your shit.
Still need a stamina system for enemies though. That should balance it out greatly.
Also gotta tweak the player stamina, since block breaking attacks currently don't work the way they should.

Oh yeah... enemies are also supposed to block. Current AI is cheap but okayish. Still gotta implement some kind of sensory system for stealth.

that can work, but you will need to be able to adjust the time on active alarms if the timescale ever changes.

if you dont, and say an alarm is set to count down at a time scale of one, and then the timescale changes, it will still be counting down at normal speeds and not the adjusted rate

I still have lots of prototyping to do, but so far:
Melee and pistol as base weapons.
Pistol has limited ammo but only gets weaker after it runs out (it's needed for puzzles, I will either add pickups or remove ammunition).
Then you have other weapons with limited ammo/usage but more power.
Also there is secondary weapon slot for harpoon, shield and usable items.
There will be few weapons, but lots of upgrades for them.

I'm a firm believer that they would be able to understand if they actually tried to acquire literacy in the subject. They just haven't been around the process enough.

I didn't start programming until like 2 years ago but I don't think I'd know even a portion of what I do know if I didn't play video games so much, mod(as a user installing mods and troubleshooting some issues, not actually making mods), and do random stuff in games that kind of had to do with programming.

>Setting up work orders and job management in dwarf fortress, using built in workflow systems
>Doing redstone/piping/complex automated systems in minecraft
>Setting up my own UI/Macros in WoW for certain stuff even if its just simple shit like tinting the screen blue if my mana dropped below 75% and water shield wasn't up.
>playing tabletop games like D&D and Magic the Gathering. These might seem unrelated but the simple literacy of having stages in a process kind of helps. DRAW PHASE, UPKEEP, MAIN PHASE, BATTLE PHASE is similar to program lifecycles and simple Update() Draw() execution, or separating ideas into different code blocks with event based programming being kind of like instants that can happen in any phase.
>Seeing mods, dealing with load orders(oblivion/skyrim), dealing with the concepts of assets and scripts, models, animations etc even if its just seeing the different filetypes, even if its just understanding that through mods you can switch out a texture or alter a model and the animation/texture are completely different parts of the program is a literacy that might not exist.

I could see programming being very hard to understand if you just haven't been exposed to any of these things and therefore don't develop a familiarity with any of it. But I just refuse to believe that "some people just can't do it". The same goes for drawing and art. I remember when I couldn't paint warhammer models for shit. Understanding layering changed everything.

Maybe some credence to this. Even a basic bitch nerd goes into it with more background than a normalfag who up and decides that he wants to program computers to do his bidding.

But the problem, after that, is getting the normalfag in question to lay aside his pride. That's probably not going to happen.

So a^2 + b^2 = c^2
c^2, being the hypotenuse, is the radius of the circle of my hexagon.
Since I'm splitting the triangle in half to us PT to measure the halfway point, the get the inner radius, I know that a^2 is the radius / 2.
So if I want to make a hexagon with a an outer radius of 5, I know that:
(5/2)^2 + b^2 = 5^2
b is the inner radius I need to find, so I can use basic algebra:

c^2 - a^2 = b^2 --> sqrt(c^2 - (a/2)^2) = b

I-is that right..? That seems like where it comes from.

>using if/switch for getting data

A smart man would have used a data table and a get data function.
>>
>>167384683
>>167384760
Switch in some languages can be compiled to a jump table, where the cases are indexes into an array of addresses to jump to. For lots of cases, this is typically faster.
>>
>>167384592
See this
>>167384792

That's not applicable to what he's doing at all, really, unless you mean implementing a jump table directly.

> unless you mean implementing a jump table directly

yes that was my implication
>>
>>167384285
>>167384389
>>167384429
Switch is not better in any way. It offers no benefits, is less clear, and has unintended effects that can come up, like drop-throughs. Plus, you can not handle any binary logic in a switch statement, so if you need to add conditions to one of the cases, you're out of luck. Chains of if/else statements are a great and fine way to handle that. His code there is perfectly fine.

t. Been programming professionally for over a decade. Switch statements are gimmicky.

>>
>>167385279
I'm talking in UE4 terms, sorry if that wasn't clear.
>>
>>167385402
While anon isn't in general correct that you can't switch on strings, it defeats the point since you can't index a jump table with a string. Switching is only better if the value is an integer and many of the cases are contiguous or if you have a lot of case fall through.

Ideally at the language level you'd just have pattern matching.
>>
>>167384592
create a map of char to function
create a function for each input and insert it into the map

then, his entire if else chain becomes a single line only a few characters long, like

map[c]();

I hate to get political here but you're looking at this the wrong way. Milo is a provocateur, yes. He doesn't give a shit about peoples feelings, yes. To him, rationality is more important than feelings, and I agree with him. I say things IRL too at work because I know it'll piss off some liberals. Why? Because I find it ridiculous that they get mad at such silly things. I guess I'm passively trying to get them to stop being a little bitch about everything.

He wanted to hold a speech, and if people don't like what he has to say, guess what? They have the choice of not going to it. For the people that are interested in hearing his point of view, it's pretty fucked that these protestors are so far up their own ass that they won't even allow others to hear what he has to say. His speeches aren't just gloating that Donald won, he explains how crazy the left has gotten and why Donald appeals to so many of the people tired of the lefts nonsense.

It's not even Milo that got attacked. The people who were there to hear him speak got attacked. "who would have guessed" is not an excuse for that. There is no excuse for the type of violence we saw just because one man wants to give a SPEECH.

Only those afraid of the truth will seek to silence debate.

Going to work on cleaning up my inventory script - its 700 lines long and the bloat isn't too helpful, moving some commonly repeated code to functions and replacing bad conditional checks with switches.

Also, got the basics for preventing items to be moved into slots now. Right now its just a simple variable 'Can Equip Weapons' but later down the road it could be something like

>Does the player have the skill for this item
>Does the player have the special amulet

You sound a bit new so ill give you a bit of advice.

You need to consider what kind of game you want to make before jumping into training yourself.

>2D ( Pixels or Photoshop )
>Better then 3D at ease of asset creation ( Don't have to create a mesh )
>Worse then 3D at asset use ( Having to redraw the entire sprite dozens of times is much harder then simply animating a basic model to move its legs )

>3D
>More difficult in asset creation ( Have to create the mesh & texture map it )
>Easier to use in asset use ( Animations really are easier. )

>UI ( Trading Card Games, Grand Strategy, Puzzle Games )
>Limited in what you can do in comparison to the above choices - cant really make a story centered on individual characters unless you are creative
>The easiest option to do - the visuals of your come just come down to making Microsoft Office colored blocks.

So much of my game is premised on there being only one spawn point. No checkpoints, or warps, or anything. I think I will need to communicate that clearly in all the messaging around the game, and in the game itself more. People aren't always sure what they're getting into.

And there is no worse feeling than seeing someone die, and then go "I have to do all that again?", when they don't. They opened a shortcut a don't realize it, they can skip all that stuff they already did. Ughh

Anyway, did a lot of work on the level today. I'd say in terms of mass its like 2/3 done. But obviously I need to go through and polish it all after its in place. So in terms of work its probably only 50% done or less.

Yeah, if you have some huge ruins with huge panels and huge ancient dudes, it makes sense, but right there with just the MC it kinda felt weird.
Or maybe the corridors aren't wide enough. I don't know what it is but I feel like there's some issue with proportion.

Just trying to make something i find fun :)

The animations for the intros are wonky because im not very good at art and they take a lot of time so i need to rush :)

The game is only random garbage at the moment because its still relatively early in development, im still trying to work out how the core game will work

Netcode makes games very difficult in my experience so im going to spend a while on the foundations

And as for the random stuff

I really want to make unique content on each planet :)

No man sky burned me pretty hard so im trying to make the total opposite :)

Everything i can dream up im trying to ram in there

And it wont be perfect and itll always look wonky

But my hope is that if i try hard enough and generate enough content people might try it and have fun for a bit just exploring and trying things with their friends :)

And the videos are to motivate me into making sure i make progress each week

If i can see people watching and judging me it forces me to make sure i get stuff done even if its a busy week (like this week , i cant work today because my grandads in hospital)

and as for the mentally ill comment

i think you have to be a bit broken to spend so much time on making a video game haha :D

I've even seen fucking stat system tetris, it was disgusting
>>
>>167408993
Personally I find it charming.

I love going back to Dungeon Siege 2 every now and then and the inventory system there doesn't bother me, because its tetris-style, but with plenty of room.
>>
>>167409116
Do you? Is that not just a generic inventory space? How does doing tetris with it make interesting choices? Defend yourself.
>>
>>167409147
If you have so much room that it doesn't matter then it is a pointless thing.

Sure you have nostalgia for it. I can imagine you can keep your nostalgia by having some sort of expanding space so you can visually sort your inventory or something without having to actually play the tetris part.

It gives the player the illusion he's actually fitting stuff in his trunk and not just moving it to a magic pocket dimension.
>>
>>167409193
not him, but it's not really about interesting choices, it's a skill test in which someone with more autism will be able to squeeze out better results with his inventory than someone with less.

-> P R O G R E S S (?) <-

I've gone back and forth with the ammo and armor systems.

>AMMO
Adding ammo limits (instead of the infinite ammo but limited mag size as before) effectively forces the player to collect & conserve ammo, but I still need to add a way to fight even with 0 ammo.

I'm thinking of either melee attacks or adding a sidearm that requires no ammo (like Quake 2's blaster pistol).

4 different types of ammo: bullets, shells, power cells and grenades. The player can have 2 weapons at a time.

Gotta implement different max amounts for different types of ammo, currenly all are maxed at 100.

>ARMOR
The current system has 7 different armor types, each ramping up in power. The current armor determines how many % of damage is absorbed and how much armor points the player can have (seen in the bottom left corner ATM)

>ITEM SPAWNING
Made the item spawning somewhat logical instead of completely random. Now guns & armor SHOULD spawn in mostly remote locations to encourage exploring.

Also, 2 kinds of ammo pickups: small (5-10 ammo) and big ammo boxes (25-50 ammo).

Ded thread, gonna repost in new thred also.

That looks cool. Is it more about adjacency bonuses or do you place those big shapes?

Combo system would be complicated. You'd have to accept certain presses as combos and others as just two commands after one another. It'd be based on things like which keys are grouped together, what keys came in after the original key and such. It'd also be a balancing act between responsiveness of general commands and the ability to successfully combo.

Maybe some sort of tree structure to represent might be useful. Could attach different timing nodes and such as well as combos and then the leafs would be commands to execute.
>>
>>167409393
Just fitting as much of the stuff you like in the allotted space as possible. A combo thing sounds neat though...
>>
>>167409374
Aren't you the guy who hates anime?
>>
>>167386298
This is a perfect example of the finnish game industry.

They made a game that would've done great on the PC or consoles. And they made it for mobile.

You wouldn't believe the amount of fucking retarded mobile circlejerk we have in the industry over here. Everything has to be mobile. Just because a few companies made it big with mobile they think everyone HAS TO do mobile.
>>
>>167409361
That would be a retard test, because it really just comes down to if you have space or not. At least, in any tetris inventory game I have played.

You could imagine bigger, complicated shapes that are hard to fit. But that isn't fun, that is tedium.

>>167409343
As if a trunk is a grid array and things are made up of smaller block shapes.

If you want to do that and it has some actual use, do it like just sorting things visually. That is realistic and useful, to some degree.
>>
If I have something bound to number keys 1-4, what should that correspond to on a controller dpad?

Starting up and going clockwise?
>>
A game where you send things in the mail to the developer, and they add it to your inventory in-game
>>
>>167409489
No.

up or right.

>As if a trunk is a grid array and things are made up of smaller block shapes.
well, do you fill your trunk with liquids ?
>>
>>167409490
It's probably because they can get away with shitty optimizations, shitty gameplay and infinite micro-transactions on mobile.

I did try some of the supposed AAA good looking awesomeTM mobile games and after like 30min of gameplay you have seen literally everything.
The rest of the game is usually just a stupid slow progression that you can only do by showing some $$$, like building another essential building with a 1week cooldown.

I mean, think about it. One fucking week cooldown. Who the fuck thought it was a good idea?
>>
>>167409721
In this posters universe, things are either shaped like a grid of cube or are flowing like a liquid. There are no inbetweens.
>>
>>167409767
It's not for you. Seriously. Go play real games. Retards with no impulse control will prop up that industry just fine.
>>
How do you set the default take when importing from Blender to Unity? Mine keeps coming in as the walk cycle which fucks up the rigging.
>>
>>167409809
Oh yeah buddy let's do everything exactly like it is in reality. THAT is how games are fun.

IIRC he said "fuck anime" which either means he hates anime or loves anime sexually
>>
---PROGRESS---

Posting in this general every saturday is becoming my only highlight in life.
Anyway, changes since last week.

-Added sprites for the player and enemy_1
-Made everything react and change to slowmotion, including animation speed, cooldowns and bulletspeeds and various effects
-Various effects for game feel, i dont like the screen effects 100% but i needed something and it's ok for now.
-Added sound effects for most things that get pitched down and up which im quite proud of, sounds cool.

Next step is actually a level and some level art to see if it can be a game on its own.

Redid the wave gun and shotgun to match the new style and made them lots smaller to not look retarded. Railgun still needs better sprites.
Going to add grenade launcher that shoots bouncing grenades.

The menus looks like shit and aren't even all functional. I hate UI design.

I like it. This is an inventory system less for the player and more for individual bags/pockets/boxes.
