I'd say so. My biggest problem with LW2 is the infuriating moment where you have an excellent shot on an enemy, nail it, and leave him with 1 hp due to Graze:Memed. He's ALMOST dead, but for all intents and purposes he's still a fresh troop in a perfect area to exploit your own position. I don't like it because it just amplifies t he advantage ADVENT already has, that of them having the ability to bring in fresh troops whenever and wherever, while you are stuck with the same guys you started the mission with.

Red Fog mitigates that danger a bit, I find, although if you play with it applying to your team as well, as you should, you'll have to keep in mind that taking your own wounds can end up being crippling to a troop and making him effectively worthless.

Personally, I like it because it adds realism.

If you're going to give it a try, give it two episodes. The first one drops it right in the middle of the story to get your attention, but it turns a lot of people off since it doesn't make sense without the context of the second episode.

If they can fight back DURING the start of your ambush, how are you ever going to survive a mission without multiple deaths? Its the very first thing you should do when you get back to the Avenger from Gatecrasher. Having a healthy amount of supplies is not nearly as important (nor will it really happen unless you really prioritize the WRONG things) in LW2. It's called "Yellow Alert" or something like that, and I doubt they're going to "fix" it.

Recon is king, as it was it vanilla. Know where the pods are, know which direction they're moving, and know how far away from them you are. Try to be far enough away from them that they don't go on alert when you ambush another pod.

It's tough, but it's manageable.

I don't agree with yellow alert as it now makes the turn system assymetrical. You can't give one side time to adjust their cover, but then punish the other side for the same thing.
It also gets even worse now as reinforcements often drop behind you. You are already flanked, but now you might even get attacked when the pod activates.

yeah the re-install is on a fresh computer, so when i booted it up the first time it there weren't any folders or configs to delete. after i edited the xcomengine.ini to no avail i deleted the entire folder to have it regenerate itself.

Unwinnable is a bad argument as the game is plenty winnable even with it on. However, it's still a poor mechanic imo. Activating a pod midway into your turn is bad. And now having a pod activate on your turn is bad. Basically, activating a pod is now always a punishment in the majority of cases, no matter how or when it happens. Have your guy crit out of cover from behind or to the side when it is impossible to replicate the same maneuver on the enemy is just bad gameplay that only punishes the player .

You are pushing towards an objective. You are doing so at a decent pace, because timers. A pod wanders in from the right and spots you. They then scamper to flanking positions. Two ADVENT fire. One grazes somebody and the other crits your guy and kills him. This can happen technically at any time. Technically the only counter would be having complete intelligence. However, on a timer mission that would not be possible, and on a non-timer mission I also argue it would only make the game more of a slog. Giving the enemy three actions on activation is an unfair mechanic, but more importantly, it is not a fun mechanic.

Well I can give you basic theory.

One, color for environment. In natural environments, tan is a color that can't miss, followed by green, and brown (or red-orange). White and grey for arctic, tan and brown for desert. Never go solo color and black is bad for camouflage.

At long distances, "blob" camo such as M81 Woodland is better while at short distances, digital camos reign (they tend to blur together at long distances).

Yeah, this is a common mistake. Even at night, you want mottled greys rather than true black. Same goes for solid white in arctic environments. It blends in with the snow, but it's rare for even frozen regions to be plain white everywhere.

The main idea is always to break up your outline. You can't do that with one color. Here's what US Marines wear as arctic overlay. Note two colors. Back in the day, they would just spraypaint grey onto the big white oversuits, same effect.

Never wear one color, don't use pure black or white. Big patterns at range, small patterns up close. Tan is a color that can't miss (except in snow).

I'd argue that the counter is having enough intelligence. Granted, how much intelligence is "enough" is variable. If you know how many enemies you're likely to be facing (which you should) and know where they are likely to be coming from (which you also should), you can at the very least orient yourself towards the best cover possible. Best strat would then be to not drop concealment until you are ready to weather possible reflex actions or until you have no other choice.

This is not possible when you have to be moving towards an objective. You draw a path a path and take it, and switching your patch midway through would just mean you don't make it to the objective. And of course there are the reinforcements I mentioned which can drop behind you. Once that happens, there is no correct position, because no matter where you face, the enemy is moving towards you from both directions.

LW2 fixed the most glaring problem with vanilla, which was cover was terrible and allowing any alien to take a single shot was a massive liability that almost guaranteed people would die. So the meta was completely nuking pods before they had a chance to fight back, and it was easy because grenadiers could annihilate any cover with even starting equipment giving your soldiers easy shots.

LW2 gives a massive boost to cover, making firefights longer and more forgiving, in turn this encourages the use of movement tactics like flanking from multiple angles so you can actually get reasonable hit percentages.

However, this brings the 2nd most glaring flaw of vanilla to light, the pod system. Splitting up your squad and attempting movement based warfare runs a massive risk of activating pods out of your vision, instantly placing you in a losing situation where you have a small part of your squad completely flanked by enemies you can't handle. Because of this risk, firefights in lw2 often become ww1 style stalemates where both sides stare at each each other exchanging low percentage shots, spamming overwatch, and abusing whatever few guarenteed damage options they have. Your squad is forced to stick together and move slowly due to the pod system.

Now, we enter the 3rd most glaring flaw of xcom2, the turn timers. In vanilla, they did make some sense because of the heavy offensive alpha strike meta, it was the best strategy to move forward destroying pods quickly. In lw2, we see this isn't the case, it is very easy to get bogged down in firefights scared to move at the risk of activating other pods. Once you get caught in the stalemate, it is very hard to defeat the turn timer.

Obviously this has never been part of xcom, and with good reason, the turn based methodical combat is the entire appeal of the game. The original xcom was known for mass carnage on both sides with entire maps destroyed at the end. For some absurd reason, pavonis sycophants have actually attempted to use lore as an argument to justify this new misplaced design (its "guerilla warfare!"). This is a complete nonstarter as xcom has never been intended as a stealth game, and no one wanted it to be a stealth game. The game systems are completely illsuited to stealth and it usually involves gaming LOS as hard as possible (in the context of xcom2s extremely flawed LOS system, where walls might as well not exist), with a good sprinkle of luck thrown in to not be caught by wandering drones.

In short, LW2 turns out to be an attempt to fix the flaws of vanilla without actually understanding why they were flaws in the first place. For it to be a true "overhaul" mod it needs to go deeper and completely reinvent the gameplay of vanilla instead of just placing a few bandaids.

The map layout doesn't make a difference. Enemies are theoretically scattered at random throughout the map. Audio cues won't help because even if you hear them, you have to advance forward. And if you are in the middle of a firefight, you won't even get audio cues.

It's unrealistic. Moving in a manner that would keep me safe from potential flanking patrols is not worth it because I am now too likely to fail the objective, and since I'm moving forward, it is still more likely I will take contact from the front.

Any map with decent resistance in front of the objective, and this won't happen. Reinforcements can drop pretty early once you engage.

Your assuming I'm not playing unmodified LW2 right this second. It's a bad gameplay mechanic, but I'm probably not gonna remove it until I beat a campaign or they do. A mechanic that can be worked around or doesn't make the game impossible does not magically qualify it as a good edition.

It seems like stealth becomes less of an issue as your squads rank up. Eventually you can blow up enough cover and have enough guaranteed damage that it's not a problem.

Although the pod activation needs some work. They moved into los, dash to new positions, shoot/use psi on you and then can still somehow activate ready for anything and have half of them overwatching. That's only like 5 actions.

Hiding drives it down, but doing missions in the region will drive it up. What you do is start hiding and shift intel and missions to a different region, and just ignore any missions that generate in the hot zones except troop columns. And then wait for Advent to shift to different zones.

All it really needs, desu. Slap some tactical rigging on that shit like you could in EU. Maybe take some notes (or even straight up lift some pieces) from the FPS ports and stick some knives or grenades/handguns in the rigging.

You could also maybe do some class-specific decor, sort of like how there was for the Titan gear in EU. Heavies got thicker armor/chest plating, Sharpshooters had ammo strapped to them, etc. Maybe Specialists could get a wrist-computer and/or a high-tech radio backpack thing. Antennas or satellite dishes and shit.

Honestly I'd take a look at the Halo/ODST mods and the variations they have in their gear and that should give you an idea of what you can do to the Warden armor to give it class-specific variations.

I'm not sure but I'm assuming you're supposed to put a ton of dudes on supply. I didn't do that at all and now I'm in July with an income of 20 after faceless tax, 90 before. Everything is expensive in this mod, I've had Psionics, Lasers, and Predator armor teched for months but can't build any of those things because they cost so damn much. I can't even get the radio towers up on my continent because what little supplies I gain go straight into replacing casualties.

Putting 4 on intel and 2 on supply in the first month seems to work very well. You can add more to recruit if/when you get a jailbreak for resistance personnel.

If the mission timer is very short (<5 days) at the beginning when you have no suppressors and other things to reduce infiltration time, then yeah it's perfectly fine to skip missions. You can try to stealth "hack the train" missions and some others with the shinobi/specialist if you're up for it. Depending on the reward, and especially in the first month, it's probably worth spending intel to boost your infiltration and get the very light rating down (plus bringing an extra trooper). Check the infiltration time calculator. Often you'll get an intel reward that will cover the cost of the boost anyway so if you can get and engineer or a scientist I would definitely consider it.

personally i've been specializing havens into either supplies or intel and that seems to work really well. with enough guys on intel near every mission you pull is doable with a squad of 6, and max supplies with an engineer advisor gives ludicrous income

I think my favorite part of the new update is now SPARKs sometimes confuse their heavy weapon abilities with beatdown and so sometimes like to dash across an entire map just to punch a Muton instead of firing a rocket.

Not really much to know, you infiltrate one mission at a time, and how early you learn of the missions depends on your intel gathering, and how long it takes to infiltrate depends on troop number, perks and items.

Mission launch screen tells you the specifics for each mission. If you have too little time to bring a proper squad, consider sending just two shinobi if it's a hack/rescue mission and go full splinter cell on it.

How much troops they have available on missions, how tough the enemies in pods are, how often they have reinforcements, as well as how likely they are to go after your havens.

I'd recommend staying away from regions with strength at 5+, I had some missions at advent strength 10 and it was horrible.
