Depends on the class you need.
>>
>>166614195
What do you need? The 16 mobility one could be a scout shinobi. The 5 health one could be a Specialist of some kind, using gremlin ranged abilities. The top one could be an Arc Thrower Assault, but the mobility is one too low for me.
>>
>>166614467
it's because those "stupid tactics" rendered every way man had previously fought war useless

If ANY method thought up to at that point had been used against trenche lines, they were crushed horribly

hell in the end a big contributor to the ending of the war was a new form of warfare being invented that would define the next war 30 years later
>>
>>166614467
it was a stupid war but it was so bloody because it turns out white people got just a little bit too good at killing eachother; I don't think any other conflict comes close to the first two world wars and their death toll.

Always get negative dodge for that glorious increased chance to get crit. Same thing with defense for that increased chance to get hit !

I would get Ala as specialist/ranger/grenadier, Sofya as a gunner and Midori as shinobi or assault.

Aim - Defense - Health - Mobility - Will - Hack - Dodge

The "normal" stats are something like this

65 - 0 - 4 - 12 - 30 - 10

the values have individual "points" that are distributed at random
>>
>>166615052
From left to right, Accuracy, Defense, Health, Movement, Will, Hacking and Dodge.
Defense is just added defense while in cover, Dodge adds a chance to roll a graze instead of a full damage hit; Will determines chance of psi abilities affecting you or accuracy of landing them on enemies.

The rest is pretty self explanatory. Acc for classes that you want to hit stuff, mobility/life for classes that need to get closer or tank, hack for specialist. Defense, will and dodge in the positives are a bonus.

Those classes seem the best. Everyone else needs both their actions always to get stuff done, or benefit more from being command than commanding someone.
I think snipers might be an option too, due to their free holo-targetting action and once action holo-targetting and one action steady weapon.

Long War 1 is a completely different kind of beast than Long War 2.

I'd recommend Long War 2 honestly since you're familiar with the game on a good level right now. Long War 1 is amazing, but if you haven't played EW or don't remember much from there you'll have a magnificent time.

For Long War 1, I recommend:
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/556/?
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/554/?
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/502/? (if you like red fog)
https://sfx.thelazy.net/games/preset/1020/ (for a better looking game)

For Long War 2, go to the My Games folder in your Documents, the XCOM 2 folder there, then wipe the config folder entirely(make a backup if you want).

Forgot to throw one in actually
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/666/?

You'll love having this around because there's some real finicky LOS at times. Especially with flying enemies(looking at you floaters) inside of buildings.

Also a quick tip, in LW1 enemies are the opposite of ADVENT. They don't have a death wish and they respect the shit you have. Overwatching in their sights or using suppression will have them stay put, and counter appropriately. The only way you'll get an overwatched/suppressed alien to move is by either having him be flanked or by the offending alien having Lighting Reflexes(not the most common thing but do watch out). To extend on the caring for the lives thing for a tiny bit, aliens won't act stupid, and they'll actively overwatch(frequently outside of LOS without an indicator of such) and suppress you down. Be ready to deal with that.
>>
>>166624750
Doesn't the game use a seed system where if you reload and do the exact same action, it'll go the exact same way?

No I mean, let us say that you have a 90% chance to hit, but then your soldier rolls a 99 and misses. If you quit and reload, your soldier will roll 99 again, just like last time. You have to do a different action at a different time to get a different role.

not really

after year 1 you can say it's all grindy, but that power curve you ride from the summer all the way through the fall is an amazing feeling. once you finally nail the air game (at least until destroyers/battleships) and get MSGTs, Gauss/Early pulse and MECs the game really opens up. I usually got the base assault in the fall as well, which was a capstone for me

And see, this is where I disagree. LW1 is a razor-thin optimization problem that has you grinding over the same parts again and again until you shave it down just right to the optimal LW1 build.

LW2, on the other hand, opens up XCOM 2 into a wide variety of tactical and strategic decisions that result in a much more compelling and interesting problem with delightfully different solutions. It's a deeper experience, and one that is at once both immediately rewarding and punishing - and not just in the LW1 fashion where you're back is in a corner and you're just heaped shit on you, but punishing you through the larger ramifications of your strategic decisions on your tactical performance.

LW1 can't compete.

Not really. The way I figure, 2nd tier officer perks are both pretty bad. Crit only affects people in range and does nothing if people don't crit and killing/disorienting the opposition is always better than trying to tank. I'd probably take incoming since I usually find better use for my actions and incoming is free, and I suppose it works well if you find that one rocketeer is out of range for your bangs.
>>
>>166627328
You're trolling right? It's like you swapped the descriptions of Long War 1 and 2. Long War 2 has a set loadout for every class. The biggest tactical choice you can make is putting a pistol on someone. Support grenades are still meaningless without the medic class to use them. Long War 2's strategy depth is slightly better, but it still revolves around prioritizing results now or later, this time by devoting resources to steady resource gain or RNG mission generation. Long War 1 is NOTORIOUS for punishing the player just as you've described, with the mounting larger strategic ramifications of tiny tactical mistakes and sacrifices.

Long War 2 has known massively broken scripts, for example its new pod system, it can't even be properly evaluated in this state because we don't know what degree of the new strategic vision is actually working. Especially coming out of Vanilla XCOM 2 which had no strategic layer whatsoever.

>>
>>166634353
Honestly, I think Long War 2 was hurt a bit by being officially funded by the devs because it means that 2k wouldn't possibly allow them to toss anything out even though some of the class ideas are shitty and the Avatar Project is much more boring than actively stopping UFOs in the first game. If they had complete creative control, I think they would've made their game even more different than standard XC2.

>strategic decisions
If LW2 appears strategically deeper than 1 it's only because it's new and hasn't had years of player analysis put into it. If you were equally unfamiliar with both mods I think LW1 would have more to figure out, ultimately LW2 doesn't have as many levers to convert strategy gains to tactical and vice versa, and there's not as many decisions to make strategically either.

operator enough or no?
>>
>>166638872
Carrying 2-3 on every character is the only successful strategy because the rest of the equipment game is more stagnant. If they just let more classes equip different secondary weapons and open up strategies that the player actually decides instead of forcing every class into a niche role there would be less appeal to flashbang spam. They got classes so right in LW1 and so completely wrong in LW2, we seriously need a total overhaul on them.

LW2 compatible version of Merc plasma weapons. I think everything should be working properly, but if you find anything wrong either post it on the bug reporting thread there or post it here, i'm pretty much always here anyway. One thing i'm iffy about is if there are any differences between difficulties, that's how it was in vanilla, but from what i could see that is not the case in LW2, weapons always cost the same both in veteran and legendary, but i could've missed something i dunno.

Right now they have the same stats as the normal plasma weapons, but once i actually get to play LW2 i'll update the mod so they have their own stats, and possibly their own research and stuff.

Funfacts: I ran into a weird bug where the sheath of the plasma sword would disappear once you were in a mission, i fixed it, but either they changed how the sheath is added(for some reason, although if i were to guess i'd assume it's because of their new weapons) or i have dementia and i did something wrong the first time around.

Also i think there isn't a laser sword in-game? But there is one in the files, it's just the beam sword recolored red but it's there.

LW1 has a wide variety of weapons that are often available between classes, with a broad but shallow selection of perks that are shared between many trees allowing for classes to be built in a multitude of ways to augment a soldier's specific role within the squad. Equipment selection flows naturally from this in mundane but meaningful ways: This soldier needs a carbine because of their aim, this soldier is suitable for battle rifle duty, this soldier isn't going to move a lot so it's okay for them to have a shotgun secondary.

LW2 reverses this, gear types are predetermined and every class is restricted to essentially their class specific weapon pool, although the mod itself did not add any weapon types beyond SMGs so they're forced to share primaries but never secondaries. Almost as a result class perk trees are much more unique from one another, but at the same time are a narrow-deep approach to skills where you select high impact abilities that typically only change what that class can be insofar as whether their primary or secondary attribute is emphasized.

That's not X-com, baybee. Classes were a nice addition but I much preferred the first Long War's take, which was a happy medium between classic, classless x-com and this cartoonishly class oriented TBS we've got now.

>>166654059
The techincal and rocketeer are both completely dominated by their secondary.
Grenadiers are just engineers with offensive grenade perks vs. support grenade perks again, and the weird shooting perks thrown in.
Rangers and Infantry are fundamentally the same, with shooty crit builds/perks and overwatch perks with a few odd utility and defensive perks thrown in.
Shinobi are a mix of old scout and new vanilla ranger since they still have the defensive perks mixed with perks that optimize flanking targets, but now incorporate their role as infiltrators.

A sniper in LW snipes, and nothing else. They are there for sniping and if you aren't sniping with them, I don't know what you are doing with tem.
Sharpshooters still snipe but now have some optional utility for when you aren't sniping.
Assault still shotguns stuff, they just have the arcthrower if you want them to do ranged stuff.
Gunner is basically the same. I know the knife bothers people, but they didn't even have a secondary before, and they can have a pistol now.
Specialist has struck me as a well rounded class in vanilla, and that doesn't really change for Long War

On top of all this, don't forget about weapon attachments and now everyone can get a bunch of AWC perks, including pistols perks and random perks. At the end of it all, the classes can still use most weapons, but just like in LW1, your ranger wants a rifle, your sniper snipes, your gunner has a big gun, you technical is heavy weapons, grenadier is offensive and defensive nades, assaults gonna shotgun, shinobi get more options further down the tree (some of the flanking perks make shotguns or rifles an option if you want them for combat besides just a sword).
My only real criticism is that I can't see myself using the arc launcher perks for an assault.

There is nothing classless about LW's soldiers, they have very specific roles. If you want classless, see Beagle's universal perk tree.

>>
>>166661739

>>
>>166663376
That's not true. On missions were you recover corpses you might not want to infiltrate as much. More enemies, more corpses, more dosh and research.
On some missions you might want a bigger squad, so you intel boost because you need the reward, but the small squad is risky.
You can skip missions in a region because you want to pull ADVENT strength from one region to another.
You might just feel like not running a VIP extraction.
And then you might decide that you want to run a shinobi specialist infiltration squad instead of skipping
You can skip missions at any time with no consequence, and you can decide exactly what kind of mission you do want to take on, and what kind of tools you are going to take.

LW1 expects you to at least attempt every single mission, barring the first large landed.

I still don't think there should be a consequence for failure. You already wasted your soldiers turn, why make it even worse? If you really have to, just make things have better hack defense on certain rolls so that things that reduce hack defense are more necessary.

Furthermore, psi has no consequence for failure, how is hacking any different?

I wish LW2 had more missions where you could employ LW1 tactics like suppression, map control, squadsight abuse, etc
It felt way more tactical in how you could approach scenarios, maybe it's because of the maps you could learn inside out to know the best flank routes and advantageous spots
>>
>>166667189
>The point still stands.
No it doesn't, just remove feedback penalty on enemies only.
And don't tell me that hacking is more powerful than psionics. Psionics as it stands is infinitely better on the battlefield, while hacking is 95% useless tactically but is good because it has the strategic value. If you have to add better hacking defense or add a cooldown for hacking enemies that's fine, but currently until you approach 100% success rate it is never worth it as killing the enemy afterwards will now eat up your entire squads resources on even the most basic combat mec.
But as you said, for LW2 at least there is already a perk for it, which is a good thing.
>>
>>166668006
It's fine for a work in progress. IIRC most just use and update a pastebin for this.
>>
>>166667472

>>166667329
Yeah, some missions make more sense than others regarding the reason they're timed. I understand why Jake & Co. wanted to add timers to the gameplay, but nothing rustles my jimmies like the people who defend timers with the "but it's guerrilla warfare, git gud" without having the slightest clue of what guerrilla fighters actually do.

nu-xcom doesnt really allow for much tactics outside of how you use your abilities because it lacks proper LOS like in original xcom or xenonauts

if youre in range and theres not a wall between you, you can see the enemy and take a shot at them
>>
>>166668026
I think it's this itchy trigger tentacle, pod gravitational pull towards your squad, countdown timer shit that encourages nuking everything in a perfect strike, and finishing the mission on the last turn compared to limiting your enemy's options to 0 while slowly chipping away at them. If you try and control the enemy like this then a pod of vipers are just going to stroll in, lightning reflex your overwatches, then pull someone out of full cover and kill them in with a flanked crit. All on the enemy's turn.
>>
How do we deal with no turn limit kiddies?
>>
>>166668425
Do you disagree that it's a ham-fisted argument for defending a bad gameplay mechanic?
>>
>>166668035
It's almost like hacking is completely useless against organic enemies, and psionics being useless against robotic enemies. Who would have thought?

There's almost always a robotic enemy in any given pod, so you do get use out of your specialist, and it has a lower cooldown to boot.

Psionics is weaker.

New XCOM games are more tactically challenging than old xcom games and have far better variety in tactics.

You have to prove it's a bad gameplay mechanic first. Until then the guerrilla war theme just adds flavor and the concept of in and out. And we have already had the timer discussion and there's nothing intrinsically wrong with them, except they shouldn't be 100% of missions, so there just needs to be more soft-timer and no timer missions thrown into the mix.

Because having timers makeup 100% of your game vs. 50% of your game is a completely different discussion.
The problem with 100% timers all the time is it will be boring because you will use the same to very similar tactics ever-time.
With 50% or less, you will have a mix of tactics that you adjust according to the mission. Hard-timers require different tactics than soft-timers, which require different tactics from no timers.
Mix them all together for the best variety in tactics the player will you need to master and employ.

For shits and giggles. My actual personal tweaks has Calvary timers set to the same as the regular timers, True Concealment style.
That fucked .ini has the Calvary timer set to 5,4,3,2 (based on difficulty) turns after breaking concealment, which means by the time they show up taking into consideration how many turns you made before breaking concealment, the normal timer would've already been up. On top of that for extra bullying I upped the Bucket modifier for ALL mission types to 0.5 so the normal reinforcements will show up faster across the board no matter what the Alert Modifier roll is. Now that I've had my fun I'll upload my actual tweaks now though.

Here's an actually reasonable .ini
Only 1 Bucket Modifier is adjusted, a mission type that actually subtracted from the Bucket value has instead been changed to adding 0.
Timers are all at 99 like the fucked .ini but the 8 strong Calvary of higher level enemies won't show up until 12 turns after breaking concealment on Veteran, 8 turns for Commander and Legend. On Rookie the Calvary is turned off entirely by default and I left it that way because I don't want to upset any scrubs actually playing on Rookie.
The Calvary timer for breaking concealment AND completing the objective has been properly lengthened so it doesn't overlap with the breaking concealment timer, which would potentially drop 2 8 strong reinforcements back to back on your head.
If anyone wants an EU/EW style ini with NO reinforcements and 99 I'll whip that up too.

>>166678270
The pod system makes you constantly afraid of activating a pod not on your terms - that is, moving into an enemy pod when you're not ready to shoot them when they run into cover. This means that maneuvering and flanking and taking advantage of the movement system ingame is heavily punished as you are constantly risking running into enemies that now get a free chance to move nice and close to you, you have only the remainder of your turn to deal with this and then they get to shoot you the fuck up. The alternative is to have it so pods don't get to run when activated, but then that accentuates the cheesy cure to pod activation-itis: alpha strikes and trying to take out each pod individually before they can ever respond which is thoroughly boring.
In short, the separation of rules for enemies depending on whether or not they are spotted makes it so the transition between the two is the single most annoying aspect of combat and the game would be far more enjoyable were an alternative system used to represent the difference between an enemy not in active combat and one in active combat.

It seems the kind of item you'd put on soldiers whose turns are too valuable to be spent lobbing grenades, like gunners or assaults.
>>
>>166678952
The other side of the discussion is that no one has really found a better system. So ever since X1, people have been able to articulate on why they strongly dislike the pod system, but in that time I have not actually seen a better system.
I would say the greatest weakness of the two point action system + cover system is that it appears to necessitate the pod system, which people still don't enjoy. Furthermore, soldiers are not expendable in XCOM1 and 2, so while in the original x-com you would be unhappy when someone died because of reaction or an ayy charging out of the fog of war, you just kind of shrugged your shoulders and moved no.
>>
>>166679327
In the early game, having a couple of soldiers who you can be pretty certain will not panic is one of the best things you can have.

>>166678738
Oh, and just adding on to this: the core of the pod activation's issue is that it breaks the understanding of how turn-based games work. The expectation is that you are able to respond to the enemy's turn on your own turn, but should you activate an enemy pod on your turn you now have not only a new set of information (oh, there's enemies here) but a new set of actions (these guys just ran into cover possibly in positions that put units I have already used up the actions on at risk) to respond to. This breaks the formula of turn-based combat and feels mildly more bullshit than getting shot out of the fog of war by some asshole Sectoid in UFO Defense.

>>166679596
Indeed, it is easy to diagnose the issue but very hard to come up with an effective alternative.

The downside is that advent force will increase faster, but it's going to increase gradually regardless because you are operating in that region. I assume the tradeoff is more detailed late game where you may want to keep force lower for longer while you prep to take a facility or something, but early on you're just delaying the inevitable: You'll have to operate elsewhere eventually.

You can only see red tiles from enemies and civs if you have them in your current los. If you reveal them into your los during your movement that's what will happen. You need to be careful of your blind spots, entering doorways, rounding corners, climbing up / jumping off roofs etc.

Better to maximize intel on the region you're scanning and ignore the other, switch region once ADVENT increase the forces in the main one

>Do this, and you get even fewer supplies. I'm hemorraging money by focusing on intel.
Most of the missions don't give you supplies, and intel boosts are worth only for very important missions

>I did not know specs increased infiltration time on data recovery. Thank you.
they don't, i meant send 1-2 soldiers to do a fast infiltration

Intel should only be used to expand, when you hit max, then you use intel for infiltration. Expand out as fast as possible because each new region is like 150 per month and lets you tackle easier missions

Money lost due to "External causes" are caused by faceless: send a military advisor

As for the 1 soldier infiltration is very important to cut LOS and call the Skyranger before going for the hack, use peremptive smoke to protect soldiers from patrols and bring only SMG

You can also do VIP extraction with a solo shinobi, as long as you can keep the VIP away from patrols

The only problem is that in some cases the enemy will move to your position even when concealed, and that will be fixed in 1.1
>>
>>166702038
>Money lost due to "External causes" are caused by faceless: send a military advisor
Noted. I usually have them in place, but I kinda fell into the habit of pulling them out when I needed another body for a mission. I guess that was a mistake.

Troof. Can't count the number of times mouse control on the Geoscape locked up on me, and I've only been playing LW2 for three days.

It might be smarter to go with 2 narutos and 1 specialist, or one of each. Specialist calls firebrand and hacks the package, while naruto scouts.

Any of you guys playing LW2 with Alien Hunters on? The weapons look so off, it feels like playing with some pre-order package
>>
>>166704760
Just a tip for doing thee kinds of things: minimum ways XP can be split is 3, so taking minimum 3 soldiers makes sure you lose none.
>>
So my haven got attacked, and I went in with one shinobi and the adviser, saved three closest people out of the 13 on the map. Had 3 resistance fucks in hiding who weren't present on the map. I figured 6 people would be sufficient to continue operations in the region, but apparently saving 3 wasn't enough, and the whole region got wiped out. 0S 0I 0R 0H, and no radio mast.

Is there a magic number of resistance guys you need to save for the mission to be a success, and do I now just hope for a mission that gets me extra guys in the region, or is the whole area buggered?

That shit was pretty intense, but Lily's technomagic powers really help out. Keep Julian suppressed and use Lily + another Specialist to hack whatever MECs he throws at you. Suicide the hacked MECs for guaranteed armor shredding.

Of course, if you don't have a gunner or another specialist, then it's a bit more difficult.
>>
>>166708347
Shen's is the only good one, followed by Alien Rulers if you want an overall harder experience.

Be warned though, Alien Rulers erases the customization in Recruitable Advent aliens.

Anarchy's children is worthless. It's only cosmetics.
>>
>>166708240

What are the most clunky and annoying missions inlw2 and why are they haven defense missions?
>firebrand comes to drop in squad
>gotta go, I'll be back after my mandatory coffee break :D t. Firebrand
>now have fun trying to grab any resistance guys while the ayys drop all around you, flank you, and rape you with explosives

I honestly have given up trying to defend havens anymore. If they get attacked, they can burn. It takes a while to get them back up to speed, but losing a squad has more of a cascading effect and getting a replacement takes even longer.
>>
>>166709071
My first Haven mission I cleared with three soldiers. It thought it was pretty easy.
>>
>>166709217
Therre are different variations. In one, you need to defend for 7 or so turns while aliens drop reinforcements every single turn. It gets out of hand fast when you can't control them since they're dropping in and getting their free moves, and there being 5 ayys in a pod.

Not to mention the faceless who'll pull your naruto out of stealth if you try to use him to grab resistance guys.
>>
>>166709513

That's the one I did.
>>
>>166709567
Then you must have been there really early, because explosive using mechs will absolutely rape you.

I'm having a lot of trouble seeing how you can defeat 20+ aliums with just 3 soldiers.

i mean speaking as a casual i found his X2 stuff boring because it was either a complete joke stomp with no tension whatsoever or setting up mods for 2 hours before he streamed for 30 minutes and got bored. i'm liking the new LW2 series right now because it alleviates both of those issues for me
>>
>>166709702
I had a high ranking assault, a ranger high ranking with a laser rifle+AP rounds+Advanced scope, and a marksman with some holo-targetter perks. I did have a reistance mech though, and that bit the dust.

I killed the first couple of drops while my sniper grabbed rebels while holo-targetting enemies. My assault and ranger pretty much did all the heavy lifting. I lost rebels, and people were hurt, but I made it out.
Every mission is different though, maybe I just got lucky, but as you can see, I felt like with a full squad I would have rolled that mission easy.
That's just my experience, maybe it is bothersome.

This is what a single enemy drop looks like. A different mission, but the haven defense was the exact same shit. All of those in the picture got dropped on my naruto.

Reaction fire could only take down the drone thanks to armour and graze:1, and laser sniper with AP rounds and blademaster's slash could only take the berserker down to that health.

If you really did succeed in that with just 3 soldiers, then I'll happily admit that you're a better player than I.
>>
>>166710407
Well I think you are further into your campaign then mine first off. And second off, what was the ADVENT strength in the region, because that probably affects how much stuff they get to throw at you. I was getting smaller reinforcement drops than that initially.

Nope.
You gotta manually guide the dudes to the extraction zone, too.
Try to kill things off immediately because every turn more drop in and if you fall behind a turn you will be swarmed. Maybe delegate a single person to grabbing civvies but if your dudes have faceless among the ranks they could be hidden there too.

I have noticed that a few times. This is why I really hate the binary cover system of the new X-COM games. I know Firaxis won't return to the simulation style of the original games but I'm kinda hoping someone will.
