Reminder that anyone who gives you shit because of the way you choose to make your game is a nodev and their opinion should be discarded immediately.

Amazing games have been made using a huge variety of engines, frameworks and other means of making games, and you shouldn't be memed into ceasing development because someone tries to give you shit for it.

Reminder to JUST MAKE GAME.

>the whole problem the genre has is that every new attempt at one either tries to be an exact starcraft clone for the esports market
The whole problem is that people think that Starcraft is ideal for the esports market and that everyone else just wants either TA or oldschool C&C.
For some reason, post-Generals C&C, Earth 21X0, Rise of Legends, Warcraft 3, Dawn of War and all other kinds of RTS are simply ignored.

You can bet your ass that a shitload of people would be in love with something that combined the strengths of C&C Generals, C&C 3 and RA 3.
(i.e. streamlined but not as streamlined as RA3)

The only guys who tried something were Petroglyph and they just suck at making RTS nowadays. Grey Goo was budget Earth 2160 and Universe at War showed us why you should never make a deal with Sega and/or Microsoft.

>uberent
You don't mean the fucks that did Planetary Annihilation, do you?
Because fuck them with a rake. They brought out an RTS without terrain features and were massively overhyped thanks to their defense force.

Once you get a bit more experienced it plays differently than Downwell, even though at the surface it seems like it's the exact same thing. Other than that we're adding more items, ways to trade resources and environmental modifiers/dangers. The initial idea, at least for me, was to just expand on Downwell since it seemed like a good game but with not a lot of content.

Most LÖVE animation libraries bind animation logic and resource handling/loading together, which is a bad thing to do. AnAL was the easiest one to change so that I could use only the animation logic part of it and handle graphics elsewhere.

As for globals it just makes sense to use them a lot for small games like these.

Nah.
Jamal is off his meds again. Whenever that happens, you can expect another shitpost meme.

>Oh jesus christ this is intimidating as fuck and this is the basic stuff.
Thing about programming is that it's one of those things where you basically need to invert your mind onto itself and mind break yourself.
There's a certain amount of mental resistance, which never goes away as long as you are pushing yourself.
You will only ever realize your progress when you go back to easier things, which have now become trivial to you.

The hardest part is finding something that pushes you and then pushing through.
And, unfortunately, good tutorials on shit are really fucking rare, unless you intend to study that shit at a good university.
I learned programming at a technical university and it was one of the best things in my life, despite everything else that happened afterwards. We had to go to class once a week and do a work sheet for two hours straight, until we accumulated enough points to count as not being absent.
Then in the second semester that got expanded to three hours with even harder tasks and some really fucking strict restrictions. Shit like "do this exercise without doing anything that isn't OOP".

Which language and what tutorials are you using?

How do I time my levels correctly?

I want the average time of a level to be 5 minutes.

Should I speedrun and make sure the level is still 5 minutes?

Should I play like a normie and make sure its still 5 minutes?

Or should I make sure its about 3 minutes but challenging so if the player dies they won't have to go through the same 5 minutes of gameplay they already went through but died and have to redo?

To nail down level times you really need to do testing across a wide group. As the developer, you will never be able to replicate that data. You can be the source of an "expert" or "staff" time but nothing more.

Trying to make each level a uniform length is a pretty lofty goal, though, It will involve lots of back and forth testing and tweaking. I would finish the levels, test them, and set time limits based on the test results.

In my case, I can draw better than most people, but I’m hardly an artist. And I’m not any funnier than the average standup comedian who never makes it big, but I’m funnier than most people. I think there's been 1 in 10 threads for me. Of course that is skewed, because I only see the stuff directly replying to a non-filter post. When that happens, I check that filtered post, but so far none of them I regret having filtered. The actual false positives happen when a post replies legitimately as well as a shitpost and then gets hidden recursively. It's a drawback I am willing to take.

I don't even filter "source", because that is such a common word. Shitters keep using several unique phrases though, so they still get filtered.

I need to make an input list for a round so that the game can load replays. What's the best way to store the inputs as the game is running?

>An arrayList where the index is the frame and the value is a list of inputs.
Fast access with the array, but lots of dead air on frames with no inputs.

>A map from the current frame to a list of inputs.
Slower to add to during game, but doesn't have to store empty input frames.

Which one will affect the framerate the least? Slower input processing or keeping a larger array in memory?

Rounds are arbitrarily long, but I expect an average of five minutes would be what most people would play.

Man it feels great when you spend hours programming and finally compile and it all works as expected.
Made a time manager system that allows you to subscribe functions to be called on various ticks
Have a json file that defines how long these ticks are, how long days are, and defines how long seasons are
And time is dynamically shown based on how long various ticks are defined. In this case it's 1, 30, 60, 240, and 480 with season length 15.

Even better is they are all various static classes so subscribing to them is easy, don't even have to tell it when to call your function, will automatically subscribe it based on the name of the passed function (passing a function called OnTick will always be called ever tick, OnLongTick ever 120, etc)

Next I'm going to work on a select system to show data about an object you select, a dynamic designate system, and stock piles.
>>

Not really, the delegate system works well because there are lot of things that work off separate time scales. Plants growing, checking what events might happen today, object deterioration, UI updates, animals updating what cell they occupy, updating certain stats of the entities (sleepiness, age, exhaustion), etc.

All of these are working at various time scales, so instead of having them all keep track of their own stats, I'm able to keep it all manageable, organized and easy to locate.

A lot of my programming time was setting up things like transferring amount of days into ticks so you can define something to happen in 2 days, or 5 years, or in one hour.

Also yeah you're right, mb

It probably can't be done easily, anon. Photoshop can't limit its usable colors to 15-bit, and using a palette/swatch set would be a waste of time anyway since 15-bit is 32,000 some odd number of colors. You're better off just using 16-bit color and following the GBC's more general restrictions:
>56 total colors on screen without programming tricks
>32 colors possible for background
>8 possible sprite palettes, 4 colors (which is 3 plus a transparency) each
If you want your sprites to look like they could work on a specific system, then just match that system's guidelines instead of the 100% exact color limitations. Yacht Club did it for Shovel Knight, and I don't recall anybody complaining about a lack of authenticity just because they added their own browns, reds, and purples to the sorely-lacking NES palette.
>tl;dr
Ignore color palettes, follow console's general graphical limits instead.

Lengths of events should definitely be handled by an external file, I would actually like to hear the reasoning on this.
I don't have to completely re build the game because I want season to be a day longer, or change how long an hour passes.

Also I tested with coroutines, but it doesn't solve my issue of defining things by length of day for example I can define food expire time as 5 hours or mean time until event triggers as a month. Instead of having a coroutine go through all the food I can just call it once an in game hour.
The system can be better explained by DF and Rimworld blogs, but regardless it's works easily, is faster, and more flexible.

>>166580573
>Instead of having a coroutine go through all the food I can just call it once an in game hour.
Uh...what? With a coroutine you can have a specific piece of food and a delay before some operation that makes the food decay. You can have it loop, too, and delay each iteration.

>Uh...what? With a coroutine you can have a specific piece of food and a delay before some operation that makes the food decay. You can have it loop, too, and delay each iteration.

My point is more that I say in the time file one hour is 100 ticks, and 10 ticks happen per second.

I can just subscribe instead of calculating how much time to wait in order to call these functions. And then having all these scripts keep track of it themselves meaning I can't disable them. In the delegate system if something is disabled I reenable for the tick, and the disable it. co routines stop on disable.

I'm really curious now to see how fast one would be vs the other, I used this system from other games like mine like prison architech, df, and I even know that rimworld used to use corourtines in Unity but switched over once tynan brought on the other dev

regardless this isn't getting anywhere, I still don't see the advantage to using coroutines with this

Okay well that's not a problem, but having a fixed number of intervals that aren't even named descriptively is bad.

You'd just say how many ticks to wait when yielding.

>And then having all these scripts keep track of it themselves meaning I can't disable them. In the delegate system if something is disabled I reenable for the tick, and the disable it. co routines stop on disable.
Are you using Unity? I assumed you weren't and thus would be implementing the coroutine system yourself in which case you can do fucking anything you want because it's just a state machine. Unity's coroutines are garbage though so it's understandable if you are.

>I still don't see the advantage to using coroutines with this
Way nicer code. Instead of splitting it up across various event handling methods which require some way to have state go between them, etc. you just have a single piece of code that yields for a given coroutine.

I wanted to make mods for the original HL way back when, I might be... 20 years too late, but I still thought I'd give it a try. If nothing else, it'd be neat to post it on /vr/.

I just have no clue how to start. Any sort of actual use for old game code has long since dried up, so the only documentation I can find for it all is written with older tools in mind.

>Way nicer code. Instead of splitting it up across various event handling methods which require some way to have state go between them, etc
I'm not sure what you mean by way nicer, I feel like having it centralized has made it easier fix something. Regardless I'll look into it, I figured others use it because of speed, which in that case I'll have to stick with it since this will become an issue after keeping tracks of 1000+ objects, but if it really is faster to use coroutines then I'll make the switch.

Regardless thanks

I mean that you don't have to have the code for a process before and after a delay split into two different methods (one being executed when an event is fired). You just yield in the middle and it's chopped up by C# for your central system to consume as an IEnumerable.

I think if you weren't using Unity it would be more useful.

With coroutines you just do:
>// do things before the delay
>yield return 60; // wait 60 ticks
>// do things after the delay
You can yield in a loop, whatever you want.

The system in charge of running the coroutines would have them all in a priority queue based on the delay time remaining (or something), and every tick decrease the delay time for all of them and advance the ones that are finished delaying (which calls the code after the yield, which might yield a delay again or might finish). And it just does this through an IEnumerator<int> interface.

Performance wise, Java is generally the best managed language. C# can do a bit better in certain cases since it has value types and contiguous arrays and thus you can write cache-friendly code relatively easily, but overall it is slower.

Where Java really sucks is distribution and actually writing in it - things that affect you as the developer the most. There are a lot of shitposters that have no idea what they're talking about and just want to shitpost, and think Java is the worst language ever solely because of performance (I mean, I hate garbage collection, but if you're okay with garbage collection and potentially working around it with object pooling to prevent spikes then Java is about as fast as you can get).

It literally never was. Although if your game works well enough, uses some form of pixel art, and reminds a dipshit hipster at Kotaku of the only game they played when they were 5, you may strike it big for absolutely no reason.

Indie gamedev is and always has been a volatile as fuck market. I mean shit, look at Hopoo. Deadbolt (their second game) has sold like absolute shit compared to RoR. RoR is also a buggy mess of a game, with shitty multiplayer and lagging/crashes if there's too much going on, all thanks to being made in Game Maker 8 (an almost 8-years-old software).

Make games for fun, and don't ever plan on any of them making money. You want a paycheck? Get a job with a studio.

people do well with fine motor control on both hands but not as well with gross motor control, which mice use

like, try to rub your belly in big circles and pat your head on the same consistent spot at the same time. most people will either make smaller circles rubbing their belly or start to circle with their head tapping hand. but even children and old people only need a few minutes to start using a modern two stick controller, and learning to touch type takes maybe a month if they're really bad

1. The speed of the "foam" coming off the rocks and boat are moving really fast, I'm talking like hurricane force wind tier fast.
2. The waves should probably move more or less in the direction of the wind. I say probably because it is perfectly possible for the waves to not follow the wind, but if they're going against the wind then you're still going to get ripples and foam on the surface that correspond to the wind and so on.

300k is obscene and fucking amazing to make from any endeavour that lasts any fewer than 10 years but not everyone can be Hoopoo

the reality is that, unless you have another job, you will make less than minimum wage (in salary terms) to make even a "successful" game. you might make 40k making a game, but the manager of a mcdonalds makes more than that per year and your game probably took two. it seems impressive, but you could make more at a real job

that said, i dont see why people dont just make a game in the meantime. making games is fun enough to be a hobby, at least to some people, theres no reason you couldnt hold a job while making a game. i dont understand this phenomenon of going to kickstarter or patreon and then demanding a year of leave or outright resigning from a position to make a game. why not just do both?

Well I'm not saying it didn't sell, or that it's not any good or whatever, I'm just saying it's sold pretty badly so far when directly compared to RoR. There wasn't much loyalty to Hopoo from most RoR owners. So if you happen to hit it big on your first shot, that's really good! You could very well be on easy street and coast on that initial success into your next game.

I'm only being realistic about the chances of making a livable wage as a "regular" indie dev. If you get good publicity early on from reliable sources, deliver a playable product when you say you will, a popular streamer or two pick up your game, and nobody suddenly finds out you're secretly a diaperfur or something, you may have a chance of doing well. You could also do everything exactly "right" all the way to release day, and then with a week to go, another much more popular indie dev reveals the Kickstarter campaign for their brand new game and kills all of the momentum you thought you were gaining.

I'm only saying it's not safe to bank on indie gamedev as a career, and that it never really has been for the majority of indie devs, so you should just do it for fun and to learn new skills. If you happen to make a shitload of money along the way, that's great! Not trying to discourage anyone developing anything by any means, but I also want people to remember that for every Risk of Rain, there's easily hundreds of other decent games that won't "make it" for one reason or another.

Just like have fun making game.

I don't believe this.

Every time somebody says "le sometimes good [product]s just don't sell" I look at their examples and it's obvious why they didn't. High quality games don't just fall through the cracks. If you game is actually amazing then it will be successful. Most people don't make it because most people don't develop amazing products.

Show me literally one example of a game that had zero problems and executed an interesting concept flawlessly with good art + music but somehow still sold like shit because of "bad luck".

Here's a poorly drawn chart. We have 4 corners, that can be each be either 0, .5, or 1, in any configuration. Placing a coordinate in there, you should be able to figure out a scaled value between them based on where you are. If it's in the certain, it's logically .5, because it's between .5, and .5, as well as between 0, and 1. But if you shift that around, the number changes. What would the best way to calculate this be?

they're not wheeled vehicles and at least some glitches are canon to gameplay through game integration: in F-Zero X and GX, flying is circumvented with checkpoints. And even if you don't like that, at the very least, Staff Ghosts actively go for Shift Boosts in GX.

F-Zero GX is literally perfect. The Staff Ghosts don't use customs or fly, but some of them take massive skips on stages like Big Blue Ordeal, and actively go for things normally considered glitches like Shift Boosts and big dives and MTSing on gentler curves

People like things they already know they like. There's no reason to innovate when there are still things that people like that haven't been explored properly. What about you? Did you do your best today?

Do any of you have a system like this in place to remind you to work on your game and have a goal for each day so that you don't "just maek gaem" and give up an hour in because you're overwhelmed?

It's just for me.

I have categories of stuff I have to code, maps to make/change, assets I need, bug list, all the little ideas one gets in bed.
Ticking them off feels good.

Hearing Tom Francis talk about constantly cutting corners for the sake of incompetence makes me sad for nu-devs.

Stop fucking spamming the thread if youre not going to post examples of your art.

If you were good enough to demand demos from people you either wouldn't be here or you would be a known artist in the thread. Since you are neither, everyone can only assume you're just another shitposter.

reminder that anime is the only thing that can save agdg from this fate
>>
>>166580824
Thaaaat's kinda fucking disgusting. Not only because of the futa but also because of the walk animation reminding me too much of an atari 2600 game.

Then again, I guess it's just not my cup of tea.

>nostalgia. As a developer, I can say you one thing, pixel art is far more difficult that 3D.

I have no nostalgia for it. My first gen was snes/genesis and I only do shitty NES style pixel art. It's just easy.
>>
>>166600506
low poly is objectively more efficient than pixel art as soon as you start to do anything with animation
