What's a good way to keep KSP interesting?

Sandbox gets old after a while and I've been going through the whole career thing which is great at first - restricts your parts, gives you progressively harder missions and appropriate rewards, but pretty much from the time you finish your first manned mission to the Mun everything feels super grindy and cut and paste.

BTSM; the shit that mod makes you pull to get even basic things done is insane

Last version it worked on was 1.0.4 so you'll need to torrent it. 1.0.5 doesn't work.

This is what I built for Mars, one of the few remaining screens of when I played it. Eight individual atmospheric sampling probes, a lander, and an orbital section. No solar panels because the first ones weigh half a god damn ton.

>SETI
pros: heavy usage of procedural parts, less part cluttering in the editor, lots of new parts, lots of new science experiments, lots of new and very varied contracts

cons: somewhat easy because you have so many part and science mods that it will be a bit easier to get science. It's a fucking massive mod with a million dependencies

>KSPI-E
pros: lots of new and hard to manage tech, lots of numbers to manage, less mods required, somewhat more realistic in how energy production and transmission work, lot more resources, hard to reach and hard to use end-game content

cons: the first half of career is basically 100% stock KSP as the good stuff comes a bit later in the tech tree. Quite complicated and documentation is somewhat scarce.

SETI is more "casual" and probably more fun for short plays, KSPI is more autistic, but more rewarding IMO. The end-game stuff from KSPI is fantastic and takes a lot of work to unlock, it really forces you to think of the long term.

The best way to become more creative is to create, and I know that sounds incredibly counter-intuitive, and to be honest, it is.
You just need to make literally anything and keep making literally anything until ideas come to you.

>too stupid and impatient to learn how to use CAD
It might not be with CAD, but I do know this feel though.
I've wanted to learn to program for years but I still have this problem.

Is there a good "babies first base/ship" guide for spengies or does the game have good tutorials?
>>
>>166347751
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQg6mpjQMRo

http://imgur.com/IZekrGe

The campaign is really incomplete to be a tutorial but you can try it.
>>
>>166347751
There probably are a lot of good guides on this, though I'd probably say
>Create new ship
>Build a platform or a cube
>Add reactor or two
>Add a couple gyro's, play around with how many makes the ship turn decently well while not being overkill
>Add thrusters
>Learn controls

Optional:
>Add one or more drills
>Attach drill/s to cargo container via pipes
>Go mining

>After learning how all of these things work start again, but this time, not as a cube
Essentially, to boil it down, learn how to make things functional, then learn to make things pretty.

Also, I'd probably avoid pistons and merge blocks
They have a tendency to anger CLANG, and while I can't say whether or not that's true in this update of spengies, it's definitely a recurring theme.

#1 it's easier to shoot the block out from under the gun than the gun itself
#2 rods are your friend
#3 rails and flak are utterly useless currently; missiles, miniguns, and shotguns are below meta
#4 always include a few tier 2 healguns on the back

My great uncle was killed like that with a big tire. Old ones had split rims, which were extremely dangerous.
>>
>>166356905
>maximum efficiency
With respect to what?

>am i a retard?
Absolutely.
Producing one green chip requires 3 copper wires, meaning the output of your setup is limited to 1/3 the throughput of your wire belt.
This means a blue (2400 items/min) belt with wire would produce a yellow (800 items/min) belt with green chips.
>>
>>166357272
a blue belt can carry forty items per second
assembling machines mk2 assemble two copper wires every 0,67 seconds
there are thirty wire assemblers
30(0,5/0,75)2=40
therefore it is exactly enough to support thirty copper wires in a row but no more without clogging up, which is conveniently enough to exactly support twenty circuit assemblers
but i have not tinkered with maximizing circuit production without belts (without robots), mayhaps it is faster than the attainable throughput could ever be
>>
>>166358123
>split rims
One of the youtube videos sais its a lock ring wheel, not split rim. Split rims I think are banned now.
>>

You just dun goofed and designed something with zero consideration of potential bottlenecks.
Even the copper wire production is an excellent example of this: two belts for input, one belt for output.
Consider for a moment that one belt of copper wire would only require a half belt of copper plates.

>compact belt factories
But your proposed design isn't particularly compact.

don't they exclusively place wire on one side of the belt? i wanted to fill both sides so needed to feed them plates from the outside, but if they fill both sides by default then i'm just a massive retard
not sure what you mean about it not being compact, it's made for maximum output on a single belt with as little spacing as possibe
what about this one, still retarded?

the inserters place items on further side of belt. if they're on end of belt, it depends on their direction. Generally you don't want to belt wires

They do.
Surely you can think of a few ways to use both of the belt's lanes.

>not sure what you mean about it not being compact
How about the aforementioned bottleneck, which basically means two thirds of the assemblers will be idle?
What about the belts which don't have their full throughput put to use?
Compare it to this setup, which uses 80 T1 Assemblers to produce 1.9k green chips per minute.

You guys are always pretty keen on survival, eh?

Good news is that this is exactly similar to what we dicked around with in starmade, calling it "King of the Ring."

Idea was that two players went in to duel, winner stayed in and the loser was killed. The winner's ship was not allowed to be repaired between matches and had to wait for the next wave of fighters to enter. Pretty fun stuff.

This is something we can add once we start working on the framework for tournaments, which is soon.

Glorious... I think of ideas about REM a lot actually since I don't play any of the /egg/ games here, and just check in to see how REM's coming along. I'm the anon who donated forever ago

Another idea I had for when gravity becomes a thing, is an infinitely long hallway with weapons shooting at you from the roof or sides, and the goal is to see how far you can make it before crashing to the ground. Small game modes like that to play in single player.
Keep up the good work Remanons <3

There's a semi autistic fag who plays on some of the popular servers who uses exploits and changes client side text. Keens has yet to fix these and it allows anyone to change the ownerships of blocks, give themselves unlimited antenna range and track almost anyone. He'll crash a server just to update the text file and upload it. It's widely used on Fountain Core now a days but still. He also uses pirate assemblers and Refineries just to go over his allowed block limits and lag out the server. Then when he pvp's and gets his ass handed to him, he'll do the stereotypical crying in chat he wasn't prepared or he got suckered punch. He has to cheat to win. When asked about it, he claims anyone who uses gravity generators and mass blocks to make a grave drive is exploiting and thus cheating as well.

Would factorio be fucked up much if conveyor belts needed power to run?

for an autismal game this one thing is really tweaking my autism the longer i play
>>
>>166382528
Well yes and no
it would require people to be a bit more careful in where they place their power poles
it would require a lot more power poles for setups where you are transporting things on conveyor belts between other power-using devices
early-game setups would require more power since you would now have to factor in the conveyor needs, unless they use some tiny amount each
conveyors would be unusable until you get power like yellow inserters and electric mining drills

but it would satisfy the need for things to be consistent
>>
>>166382528
It wouldn't add anything new while being massive pain in the ass to setup.

Well, saying it is one thing, doing it is quite another. The current system is, as always, temporary, but its basically just tinting white objects (the panels and struts) individually. Default is grey, and you can color things as a whole or on a per-part basis, with the exception of functional modules, which will have another system later. We've made some great progress on decals, so those aren't out of the question once we get ricochet marks and scorch marks in properly.

Well, not quite as silly as this, but this is what five minutes a month ago can do. When we put actual effort into it, it'll be less awful.

Missiles are my fourth fetish, so those are going in with a vengeance. Macross missile swarms confirmed.

Mines... eh. Take em or leave em, not that interesting to develop or play with. Easy to do, I suppose.

Lasers, yes, but not in the standard sense of star trek magical bullshit. They'll tie more into the heat and resource system than, say, the penetration mechanics. More melting, less instant slicing in half.

Not right now, no. Everything is on the LMB. Running plan is weapon computers, which are linked to specific keys, similar to mechwarrior. Mouse 1, mouse 2, mouse 3, and so on. Keyboard binds too. One computer for the 35mm's, one for the 105mm, one for the missile array.

These are then configured individually, with target leading and target acquisition modules placed separately. or perhaps the modules are just 'slotted in' to the computers via a dropdown menu.

Can't really think of a situation where you'd need more than 5 computers at any given time, but initial support will be for up to nine, I think.

first impressions of avorion

+it's everything i expected (it's basically the same game as the demo, but with loads more shit happening)
+there's an upgrade that lets you legit BREAK THE SPEED CAP just like the glitch from the demo (webm related is the demo glitch)

-there's a bug that makes some people unable to launch
-he still didn't dial down the frequency of pirate raids in ""safe"" sectors
-stacking thin solar panels is more space and weight efficient than the power generators of the same tier, still no requirement for solar panels to be exposed

In the demo, some of the speed upgrades are glitched and cause your speed hard cap to periodically increase for mysterious reasons

In the full game, there's an upgrade which removes the hard cap in exchange for massive power draw or some such, making the highest speed you can reach about 20km/s which seems to be the soft cap. (Only a 2-block microship will have low enough power draw to ever see 20km/s though)

We are engineers, we overcome problems within given constraints.
No surface friction? Only the blocks on contact get damaged?
Picture related with a lot of speed should suffice.

>Mines... eh. Take em or leave em, not that interesting to develop or play with. Easy to do, I suppose.
You could have a small ship zipping around laying mines to impair the enemy's mobility.
Even better it could be used in conjunction with a bigger ship (if multiplayer is confirmed, even if it's a "instanced" system a-la Elite: Dangerous) to allow it to bring it's full firepower to bear on the now trapped target.
Plenty of payload options too! From explosives to gravity generators, maybe even a thruster and a magnet so it sticks to ships and fucks with their movement (maybe causing them to slam into a wall)

Well, its not going to be a big open world, at all seriously just go play elite dangerous if you want that, but a squadron of mine-dropping drones is totally a feasible thing. Granted, the drones wouldn't be so extensively simulated in the structural mechanics, but they're so small as to make that hardly matter.

1080 Ti will be the same price as the 1080 today. Nvidia has never launched a GPU above $800 (8800 Ultra), and has only launched two at $700 and above (8800 Ultra and 780 Ti). Both of those were considered premium lines and had a lower cutdown of the same die with pretty close performance (8800 GTX and 780) for much lower prices.

Basically you're fucking dumb, this is 980 vs 980 Ti tier we're talking about. 1080 is GP104, 2560 shader chip, 1080 Ti will be GP102, 3840 shader chip. They may not launch it with all shaders enabled (3456 likely), as they're already selling a 3584 shader version as the Titan X Pascal. Look up benches for that, and imagine it with a higher clock speed. Full 3840 shader dies are reserved for workstation currently.

Nvidia could shit this out any day, but as a company their purpose is to make you pay for the cheapest product they can make for the highest price you will buy it for. They're waiting for Vega from AMD to come out.

GP100 will never be seen in consumer spaces, same shader count as GP102, but with HBM2, full FP64 support, and more FP16 support. Games use FP32.

Multiplexer was easier than I thought. I just had to construct the truth table and go from there

it takes one bit and a control input. If the control rod is pushed, then it inverts the bit changing a 0 to a 1 or a 1 to a 0.

Decided to make the OR gates using T-bars instead of pure rod logic. With such short bars there won't be much twisting force from being pushed off centre, and making them without the T-bars would more than double the delay.

It's easy to make them like this visually, but I won't know that it actually works until I splice them into a grid and add springs and cams to everything, which'll take ages. Goddamnit.

The design in the foreground doesn't even work in singleplayer; every once in a while a sliver of asteroid would sneak through.
It'd usually disintegrate after an hour or so.

The design in the background is much more stable, and I've successfully used similar miners in multiplayer environments.

can you make your own weapons platforms or is the entire weapon a component you stick onto the hull of your ship
>>
>>166449968
Oh thanks, I was looking for these.
>>
>>166469338
A bunch of different weapon types, with varying quirks and bonuses. You start with 2 lasers and 2 mining lasers and 2 projectile weapons. The rest you gotta get as loot or buy from stations
>>
>>166469338
It's just a component you add to your hull sadly
>>

Hold R in build mode and click the axis wheels
>>

Thats unfortunate

Seems like you could make fuckhueg battleship scales in this game but if the weapons themselves are only of a set size you'll probably be forced to cover the entire surface with a gorillion weapon components and thats no fun compared to large custom-built turrets

Atmospheric lift+drag/wing parts is amazing. Not perfect, but it essentially lets you make planes and use less thrusters in atmo.

Other than that, you don't really NEED mods. I tend to run some aesthetic parts ones and maybe armour ramps or something.

People are memeing you about spengies multiplayer but it is feasible with a small amount of people. Just be prepared for lots of lag/slowdown problems and keep space master/admin tools/cleanup ready to use often.

Also don't do anything with rotors or pistons ever at all.

Railguns and coilguns can easily be made thousands or tens of thousands percent efficient, we don't have badass efficient lasing mediums like co2 or free electrons, no batteries, can't set rtg fuel mass below 100 grams, can't set gun loader power below 10 watts and the loader is most of the weight on my mini drone gun.
>>
>>166495540
Have you reported those to the dev? If so, did he respond with an affirmative?
>>
>>166495837
Loads of people have reported the efficiency problem, and he said he'd be working on it. It's partially fixed now, it used to be possible to make railguns that'd launch at several megameters per second (Significant percentage of light speed). Not sure about the following four.

Depends how easy it would be to figure out their physics/texture systems. Don't know what engine they use, haven't played in so long I can't remember.

>Also, not illegal
My initial idea was to just go back and murder them, but that would draw too much media attention.
I say figure out the textures so that they could be replaced with a similar system, but not as odd-looking (or just more accurate to placement restrictions when building, I remember larger guns being bastards to put down sometimes), then they'd just be extremely suspicious of how this 'Piratecraft' game suddenly appeared and looks like their old work.
If they'd even recognise it, that is.

Unity. Fun fact; several groups have tried creating Not-Robocraft(tm). I talked with a few devs from two of them, and told them about my own game REM, with the intention of getting some good critique about implementation of features and the framework of building/saving, and hopefully physics.

They said I needed to completely halt development and make everything pretty.

Their whole project fell apart litterally days later. Gave me a giggle.

I think there's only one group left, but I've not been paying any attention at all so they might have died off too.

Really, to create a clone of Robocraft would only take a few weeks, assuming you know what you're doing and had the capital to pay for the servers until the F2P revenue started coming in.

>>166496040
Well, its something. Can't speak for him but sometimes you just need to step back and """recharge""" before continuing devving. Give him another few weeks before declaring the game abandoned.

>In lieu of servers, couldn't you set up Peer to Peer multiplayer, at least at first? Let people host their own servers and matches until some actual capital started flowing?

Well, that's the thing. The only unique or compelling thing about robocraft and the team-based f2p games like it (war thunder, wot, crossout, LoL, ect) is the way you can just hit play and be assured you'll be matched with someone you have the faintest chance of defeating on fair grounds with an absolute arbitrator, without it being a boring AI.

Peer to peer and player run servers ruin that, to a more severe extent when you have to work for any ability to retaliate, as seen in spengies and gmod. There's always some cunt that is amazingly good at the game and kills you over and over again, giving you absolutely no chance to learn and develop your skills.

If you're going to have matchmaker multiplayer, it has to be done when the game is conceived, not some time after.

which makes testing REM's multiplayer a fun little fucking experiance, let me tell you that! Probably going to get a few eggmen on and that's it, to confirm everything works, then just go full matchmaker, with private servers some time down the road.

Pottery. Light trails off of glowing shit like thrusters and little accents, though, we can do that. Tron is probably going to die out completely at .39-ish. Certainly before multiplayer, as it makes it incredibly difficult to discern what the fuck you're shooting at. Granted, there's also going to be targeting bounding boxes around ships if you have a targeting computer.

You can lock-unlock rotors or landing gears with no problems if you are not shaking like crazy already.

In terms of resources, the difference is neglible - one iron plate and 1.5 copper plates.

I've had more blackouts due to not enough power to keep the miners running or fogetting to expand to more oil/coal than sabotage
Usually the fix there is to disconnect a few things, add more boilers/engines and drop some coal on the belt and then reconnect things once it starts again

Most reliable option seems to be landing gears plus thrusters.

Build the initial "climber" around the tether and place four landing gears symmetrically around the tether. They'll provide a buffer around the tether that will let the climber ascend or descend without physically scraping against the line. Then just use a combination of thrusters to ascend, descend, and decelerate before hitting the base or platform.

The real question is how to deal with timing for the ascent/descent sequence. Ideally you want some kind of trigger to go off at a certain altitude that starts slowing the climber down.
>>
>>166516476
>>166516780

>>
>>166517024
Not quite. Burner inserters will always prioritize fueling themselves before fueling the boilers.
If fuel supply is temporarily disrupted, like if you're rebuilding the coal mine/switching from coal to oil, and the power goes out before fresh fuel reaches your power plant, burner inserters will still be able to shovel it into the boilers, restoring power.

Sorta, most of the time that's happened it's been more coal mining/oil pumping has ground to a crawl, and my set up just suffers blackout in between surges of power (it spits output then dies THEN the coal/fuel reaches the inserters), if I used electrical inserters it'd die and not start back up without me shoving coal/fuel into a burner

The other big problem is going to be scale.

It's... what a little under 50 km to orbit from the big planet? That's ~20,000 large blocks for a one-block tether, and every single additional tether you add for stability or whatever is gonna double that. And that's not including all the blocks for the actual base and station.

That shit adds up quick.

I dunno... and I'm actually genuinely curious now. Might try doing something tonight or tomorrow.

>>166523621
Not sure if it would work on the top or bottom, especially if you find yourself going fast enough that maybe it doesn't "catch" in time.

Alternatively, though, you could have a docking ring at the top and bottom maybe a couple blocks tall and have autolock landing gears on the side to catch the ring as you go through. Doesn't completely remove the risk of flying into the station/ground at top speed, but it could make a difference. I'll do some experiments.
>>
>>166529380
Which is why you'd employ several "catcher" gears or, indeed, turn the idea inside out and have a little "landing strip" at each end of the elevator.

So, just gave it a try with a ~1 km tower.

The good news is that the symmetric 4-gear system works perfectly for keeping the thing stable around the tether, don't even need gyros.

Using external gears to catch on the way down works great at low velocity, but is disastrous once you get faster than like 20/30 m/s, whether it's lag or the gears just taking a long time to decelerate the climber isn't clear yet.

The landing strip idea has some merit. I'll give it a try tomorrow. My thinking now, however, is that the best option is going to be some kind of altitude based trigger that either turns the autolock on the 4-gear system on or switches on some emergency brake thrusters, or both once you get high or low enough.

The idea definitely seems to have merit. While not necessarily faster than just taking a ship up or down, the fact that you could make the whole setup basically automated would mean you could get into orbit without having to worry about sitting through the whole ascent. Would work especially well with one of the speed limit mods if you could get it working consistently. Hit a button, go grab a snack or a drink, and by time you get back you're in orbit.

>>
>>166534221
so i should place another normal signal during the turn into each station to make it work properly?
i don't really know how either of them work, i just know that i was told to place signals every train block, probably so they don't crash into each other, and then chain signals at entrances, probably so that trains cannot enter the unloading place while there is another train there, or exit the station while another train is exiting

Llano's had malfunctioning temperature sensors, they all read like that.

THIS however, had a perfectly functioning sensor, was freshly repasted, heatsink spotless, fan at full tilt, and it actually downvolted. They stuck a 45 watt CPU in a platform meant for a 20 watt CPU and I got it for dirt fucking cheap.

This was before they made them throttle as well.

And there is your problem.

While they generally run hotter than Intel, their sensors don't play well with Speccy in the first place. I had the same abnormally high temps when I had my AMD CPUs.

If you want a real number, get AMD overdrive, find out the T-Junction of your CPU and find how close it is to that.

also it was down purely to the platform, it was intended for a 20 watt tdp chip as I said, and even then it was apparent it'd run hot with that.

A fucking 45 watt quad core isn't gonna go down well Intel or AMD in a laptop like that.

The engineering mechanics of waste management are a genuinely interesting topic, part liquid dynamics and part semi-rigid body physics, across a wide range of operating regimes (from zero gravity to 9+G in flight.)
