Oh I didn't know that. So some UI nodes automatically do something when you send a global "ui_" type action? I thought they were just default actions so you got your basic left, up, right etc. keyboard controls.

Then it's probably what the other person said and action_press is internal to the input singleton and never enters the event queue. Otherwise it could have also been due to tree order, since input events travel from the "highest" node to the lowest, whereas "_process" travels from the lowest to the highest.

I think you can also send input events to viewports directly using "input" and "unhandled_input" function to bypass GUI

Using the basic ui_* actions means you can have a main menu up as soon as you have placed 2 buttons and a script that triggers when a button is pressed. Using arrow keys you can already switch selection between all Control inheriting nodes that can be selected.
Each node can be customised to have predefined "neighbours" for arrow-key navigation even, else the engine works it out based on spacial relation.

Dixie movement basics coming along nicely; crouch and crouch-walk, momentum-based slide, backflip.

Up next long jump, the all-important block/dodge, and dash-sliding. Also on the horizon basic pole climbing, surface-swimming, and as much of the Mayhem League wall-cling and grinding mechanics as I can get to comfortably carry over.

Implemented a master array to the save game of unlocked moves (both in-level abilities required to progress and purchasable upgrades) and a simple function for checking against this array or updating it.

My hope is to have all of the basic (non-combo-chain) moves done by the end of next week, though doing climbing and swimming is a new thing for me so perhaps unexpected hurdles await.

are there any tools that make the switch from unity to Unreal easier? any UI changes that make it similiar to unity i can download or something? so far the UI is pretty daunting compared to unity but its my first day with the program so its expected.

Yep. It became unfeasible to finish Mayhem League due to bad choices with early animation design (requiring me to manually animate every melee transition, resheath animation, and develop like eleventy-billion aim offset poses) and the game itself wasn't all that fun to play, so I've rebooted it as a CUHRAYZEE N64 collectathon.

Ultra-low-poly, low-bone art means I can shit out assets in a fraction of the time, and I've applied what I learned while making Mayhem League to come up with a system that's extremely simple and robust so I can slap combos and other abilities together quickly and efficiently.

I also streamlined a lot of the gameplay elements into something that's (hopefully) more fun to play, and won't take 3-5 years to complete.

Something along the lines of pic related, but she's got a magic/radioactive/whatever metal shard jammed through her eye into her brain and it lets her sort of manipulate shards of metal, I guess?

She's got a "cloud" of them that globs onto her hands and feet to let her manifest weapons and double-jump and stuff, and she creates a second set of floating hands to wield her secondary weapon.

The story is she lives on a farm in the country with her sister, only some villainous character is mining or researching or whatever out there, and there's an accident with a reactor and it blows the shard into her face. She's adjusted to it, but then at the start of the game her sister gets a reactor explosion too, and even worse, and so Dixie sets out to... avenge her? Or find a cure? I don't know, don't think too hard about it, point is, go beat the shit out of the person who's making these reactors.

Expect a whole lot of "golly, y'all"s and "we're ridin' the gravy train with biscuit wheels now!"s. I grew up in Virginia and went to school in Tennessee, I hate that there aren't more hillbilly characters in media that aren't villains or punchlines

I've actually been working on the Dixie design doc since about 8 months into Mayhem League, though in the original plan she was less "Panty-Longstocking" and more pic related, and the game was about a second American Civil War... she had the same basic abilities, but she was a snarky, lazy piece of shit who was only as valued in the rebel army as she was because of her magic abilities.

In that design doc, the game was a sequel to Mayhem League; it was going to turn out that Mayhem League was actually a simulation program designed to brainwash police into being perfect killing machines. The whole combo/style and timer system was implemented as a Shock-And-Awe focus and to get soldiers to attack without hesitation. At the end of Mayhem League, you were going to enter the "real world" but see civilians as punching-bag enemies, and it would turn out You Are The Bad Guy, and Mayhem soldiers were going to be the grunt footsoldiers in Dixie, working for the US government to quelch a civilian uprising Dixie was helping to lead.

But, then Mayhem League became impossible for me to finish and I was enamored with the idea of doing a brawler/collectathon hybrid so I rewrote Dixie's story into something more like Banjo and Kazooie's country-home backstory and here we are.

Because Mayhem League was fucking impossible.

Here, I can animate 25 standalone punch animations, shuffle them around, and have a combo library as big as Bayonetta (and there's a reason this is how Platinum does their combo systems).

With one set of floating hand animations, I can do full aim offset functionality for every single action Dixie takes (this is why Nier Automata uses the Pod Gun; again, learning from Platinum here).

I can do in 2 weeks what would take me 6 months of solid animating work for Mayhem League.

And anyway, ML wasn't fun. Anon, it just wasn't. Trust me, I played it more than anyone. The core combat mechanics were fun (if a little bit convoluted), but the THPS approach doesn't work for a brawler-platformer thing. Skating games are 100% acting; brawler games are all about REacting, and having to wait on enemies is contrary to a game built around a constantly-counting-down timer. It forced me to strip levels of every interesting quality and I wasn't happy with what it was becoming.

This game will feature like, 99% of Mayhem League's core combat and gameplay elements. It takes the fun of fighting and puts you in a setting where you're actually permitted to fight for fun.

I'm now more or less satisfied with the looks of this thing and I think I've squeezed out as much performance as I possibly can. I compute almost everything in background threads and on the GPU - this world is rendered with just 3 512x512 textures and 3 quads, for example.

I'm kind of scared to move on to the next phase, but I guess it's time to finally stop enginedevving and start working on creature AI and pathfinding.

Scythes aren't really that rare, they're a pretty generic undead bad guy weapon. I also think they're kinda silly looking.

- Delay on jumping when standing still and bouncing off crates doesn't feel good. Should just be instant all the time.
- Camera follows you too slowly up and down.

I know some programming in C++, but I haven't really done much beyond take a version of GoldSRC already prepared and compile it. Does /agdg/ have a link to a good tutorial on how to download and compile either an idTech engine or the source engine? I'd like to start with one of those as a base for programming a somewhat simple game, but every time I try to compile either, I just get a bunch of errors in visual studio.

I'd really like to just use the original Quake engine, but I don't know enough C to make use of it.

I've always thought rpgs could be switched up a bit. Some kind of health system that works on some kind of combo, so doing more stuff boosts your level maybe, and not performing actions makes you maybe calmer, but more likely to take damage because you're not on enough of a high enough to tank hits. I'd want to avoid complex number systems though and allow people to hop right in.

The frog idea is more original, working like the level structure to star fox, each level is a bowl of noodles, and what you eat out of the bowl on your lunch break decides how you perform at work and then goes on to change up how the boss sees you and gives you raises, more jobs, time, etc etc, (the workplace aspect are just story elements and don't contain gameplay)

the only place frogs come in is that they are the characters, nothing really having to do with lakes or anything.

So Godot has a TileMap, but it just works in big blocks. So, if you want to add details, you have to add whole new blocks to your tileset, even if you're only affecting a few pixels. Seems like a lot of work to change a few pixels.

Do most people just create their map in their painting program and then export it as one big thing, not using the tilemap? Many games are made up of tiles, the same way Godot has them implemented. You don't edit the tiles after placing them. You make a bunch of tiles and use those in the engine to make a map.
If you need extra things within the world like interact-able objects then those will be made as separate objects that aren't part of the tilemap.

Day 1 of opening Unity and trying programming for the first time.

Well, here it is. My first game (that I copied a tutorial to make). The tutorial provided all art assets and instructed how to write the scripts. I basically typed the scripts word for word on the tut, but it was still sort of tough. Programming seems a bit more scary now. Everything not script related was easy to understand.

How do I edit webms to cut parts?

Tomorrow I will try making a sidescroller, while studying the scripts I wrote today to try and understand their purpose.

Say I have a brick tile and I use like 20 of them to build a wall. What if I want to add, say, a vine to the wall? I would have to create a vine that goes through like 4 blocks, so I would have to create 4 unique tiles and add them to my tileset just to add this simple vine, right? I guess I could prototype the thing outside of Godot and then add it as a separate object on top of the tile map, but if you have many such objects then your folders are just overflowing with detail pngs which are all just part of the same map.

Copy and pasting detailed flavor details like flowers or bushes can be easier and more flexible than making a shit load of tiles with flavor items in different patterns.
For stuff like grass tufts and clover that you would want to repeat a lot, making tiles is definitely a time saver.
For very large items like that boulder that will fill up a whole tile, it wouldn't really matter much whether you made a tile or an overlay.

The funding that an indie studio needs for a month could last smalltime indies or even small groups years. It's the studios that really need those deals and they're probably making a product that has good chances of making a return.

We'd be a high-risk investment with low chances of any return, since the advertisement power costs the same no matter whether the game is smalltime or large.
Most likely scenario, a large publisher offers you a deal only to get rid of you as a distraction from a larger product they're working on.

I've heard a lot of people do just make the map as one big image and then cut it up in the engine, simply because the artists prefer to work that way. I don't know if HLD necessarily did that, since there are a lot of repeating patterns in that game that might suggest tiling in some areas at least.
Either way, tiles are great for side scrolling games and can potentially do flat environments that look as detailed and natural as drawing the entire environment does. You could probably even assemble large images out of tiles in PS if you wanted to.
In the end it comes down to what you prefer and what's more efficient and effective for the art look you're going for.

I'm working on a roguelike in GMS and hit a wall. I'm using ds lists to track inventories, for players, NPCs, and containers. All items are an object that's created with are script that changes its properties.

My problem is, I created two backpacks with two different inventories. In my inventory screen, it shows the first backpack with the contents of both, and the second one empty. I assumed giving each container it's own ds list would let them have their own inventories... am I wrong about that?

Sounds like your position is the one kickstarter is made for, maybe it's not such a bad idea.

I feel like you just have to know your scope. If you know your scope, then you can probably think of a couple of things outside your scope that you would love to do in a stretch goal. Working on making the starting area more distinct and memorable. So much of the game involves opening shortcuts that loop back to the starting area, that I want players to be very clear when they have arrived back. Firelink shrine is the example here. The music is one factor, I am implementing safe sounding music in this area.

Trying out a newer animation system so modifying things should be a little easier. Still have to change over most of the moves though. Also buffed most of the physical attacks in various ways so the spinning aerial attack wouldn't be the best MP regen choice 99% of the time.

The standing physical attack now only has two attacks but it can now be mashed (kinda) to attack fast. The other attacks now have slightly larger hitboxes and do more hits as well. The spinning air attack should be roughly the same except the hitbox is now larger.

You have a class called InteractiveMedia. And you extend that class into VisualNovels and then into VideoGames.
VisualNovels "is" interactive media, as is VideoGames, but VisualNovels is not VideoGames, and you can't cast it as such.

Personally I think Visual Novels should be fine on AGDG, and whether they're video game or not depends on what sort of content they have (Rance/Kara no Shoujo VS Symphonic Rain) but your post was so goddamn stupid I had to say something, sorry.

I watched Magnetic Rose as recommended; I think my artist might've been Katsuhiro Otomo in a past life or something since a lot of what's going on there visually we've been trying to translate into the game. I was originally thinking something closer to Venus Wars or VOTOMS, but I suppose we've kind of fallen in closer to the Magnetic Rose game for the Sega Saturn that never existed.

Pic related is some old concept art from when we were first trying to nail down a style. It's got in game sprites, but it's a lot rougher than the cityscape; Hopefully you'll be able to see it soon.

God I'm so done trying to get the type of camera I want. I guess I don't have the skills to make a wind-waker camera system like I want, and after 20 hours of fiddling with the camera, I'm at a point where I'm like "good enough". I know that's a shitty attitude to have, but maybe later on in devving this game I'll learn more and come back to it.

Got it so when the camera hits a wall it'll act like it's hitting it and not clip through(Still need to work on it though as there's still a bit of clipping), and when you hold down the scroll wheel you can move your mouse up/down and it'll correspond by moving the camera vertically. I figure I don't need to have the camera move on the X axis manually as long as the camera is able to rotate around the player already automatically.

I just love how they always forget that it applies to artists the same. There are thousands of jobs where they can apply for concept art, webdesign, book drawings and overall anything that needs visual. There are far more things that needs visuals than coding outside.

For the last time only the high level programmers are getting the high money. You will need to go through all kind of tests and show fucktons of degrees and experience before any employer agrees to hire you at the level.

Since you're on an interior, I always thought that railway cameras always worked better in that sort of environment. Think God of War. They always had control of the camera. The player could never control it, and therefore they could always determine the best way to focus on what's happening and also the surroundings, but from the best angles.
