Are you planning it or already deep into it? Lone Survivor would be better to start with. If you plan on using Burial Blade, Saif, Church Pick, Saw Spear, any other Skill weapon with some Strength scaling go 25 Str. If you're sticking to Rakuyo, BoM, Bowblade, etc with little to no Str scaling, go with Vit. Don't bother with 25 Blt.

It moves the extra point from Arc into Str, which is more useful since it'll let you use Loch Shield. Your best options are Military Veteran: 45/12/25/50/10/6 or Lone Survivor: 50/20/11/50/10/7, which both leave you at 98 if you care about the meme meta. There's never a reason to pick Professional over the other two unless you plan to add Arc for Tools in a Skill build.

That loop you described is actually a really useful shortcut. As trite as "git gud" is, that's really the baseline advice. The key to combat is timing: learn how long it takes your weapons to swing and recover, get an enemy alone and learn his attacks and how to dodge them, and DON'T BUTTON MASH, it triggers tunnel vision and locks you into an attack animation right when the rest of the mob winds up. As general advice for early game groups, use the secondary function of your weapon: all the starting ones have much wider swings when opened, allowing you to juggle the crowd instead of working your way through them one at a time.

Anon, the games allure comes from increasing your skill and understanding how an enemy moves and attacks. I spent a stupid amount of time in central Yharnam on my first playthorugh and now I clear it in about 1hr. The real fun comes when you encounter a boss and you have a whole new unique enemy to learn how to beat, some of the best moments where Gasgoines boss fight where every death i had to learn something from him.

I was getting the hang of the combat, using my pistol and got a couple of visceral kills and using the secondary function like you described, and it definitely helped with range. I had the guys trapped in staircases and I made quick work of them at one point. I get how you're supposed to play, dodge in, get some quick hits in then dodge back out. Agreed, the learning curve is rough up through the first mandatory boss. First, I suggest you get back to the bridge: just run past the Resident Evil 4 tribute and the werewolves and bum rush the far end of the bridge. That's going to sound like really stupid advice when you get there, but after that you'll be able to level up, and from there you can grab some echoes, pull back and spend them before going out again. Also, save your vials if you can, drop rates decrease the more times you kill an enemy.

Armor is very simplified compared to Dark Souls. Hunter garb, bought or scavenged is arguably the best general-purpose armor in the game.

Yeah just go get the free armor. The Blood you spend to buy it will let you level up 4 times or so that early on. And while it might be a bit spoilery... I recommend looking at the BB weapon list, picking you're favorite one, and start leveling up for it. Thats the best way to play BB.

My friend, have you never played a Souls games before? More than half the time you can literally just run past stuff if you don't want to fight it. And why wouldn't you? The game is focused half around combat, half around exploration. It can be intimidating for a new player, but Bloodborne straight up has the best combat of any modern From action RPG.

The cleaver is the only starter worth picking for putting together a build.

The first r1 with the axe has terrible startup time in both modes, forcing you to use roll attacks and running attacks it you want to get a quick attack out. The untricked cane has bad range and not great speed, the tricked cane bounces off walls all the time.

They're usable, but if you just want to rush the early game, cleaver r1 spam is the only way to go.

Yeah first lamp is really close to the bride. Just take the left, go into the house, up stairs, and to the right. You'll see a ogre and some crows, past them is the first boss.

Also, one super early farming spot is to the right of the house. When you exit upstairs go up stairs, kill the guy at the top. Then look to your right... you'll see the two werewolves. So early on they can fuck you up pretty good, but if you aggro them then run back down the stairs you'll find they can't fit through the door to come into the house. Whichever weapon you have, trick it, then start smashing them from the safety of the house for a few hundred easy echoes and vials.

Those wolves, in their multiple forms throughout the game, are one of the few enemies that have guaranteed drops.

You are objectively wrong. Axe is a powerful weapon that can stand on its own with no real building towards its preferred stats. Thats why its the recommended weapon for going into an Arcane build.

And if you're locked on, the tricked cane can sail right through most walls. One of the most common early cheese strats is to get Gascan on the other side of a set of unbreakable gravestones and then just whip his ass. You can do that through the entire fight if you're careful. And when untricked, it range isn't that great normally, but its power attack is a pretty good lunge with decent range, and its normal attacks have great speed.

Why is the framerate in the first area so janky? I borrowed a friend's ps4 so I could play bloodborne, but the constant framerate dips I was getting were making me nauseous. I had to put down the controller and close my eyes by the time I got to Cleric Beast (I think thats the name. Dont really remember)

Someone suggested that maybe the ps4 was overheating, but he hadn't played the game to know if it was a regular issue or just exclusive to me.

I really hope its just an issue with his ps4 because the gameplay seemed fun and I want to play through it if I ever buy one for myself.

The first area is extremely detailed and has too much smoke and particle effects from the burning bodies for the PS4 to handle on BB's engine. Old Yharnam is worse right near where you enter it. For some fucking reason the game goes in slow motion when rendering effects like those, especially up close. It happens when a giant enemy dies all over your screen, as their body vaporizes. In the chalice dungeons, occasionally (rarely) there will be like 5 poison gas pots next to eachother in some basement trap, and being anywhere in their vicinity causes the frame rate to drop to like 10fps (even if you cannot see the gas) until you destroy the pots.

I don't know why but the PS4 always shits itself over these stupid particle effects. Even Uncharted 4 has that problem to some extent, and that game was optimized like nobody's business.

And when you do the transition attack into tricked Holy Moonlight Sword, you get your own hyper armor; you can absorb at least one non-heavy attack and you will still complete your swing

Not even when using the saws? I sometimes do L1 attacks when cleaver R1-comboing an enemy who is about to strike me with their heavy attack (rather than dodge), because I know the heavyness of my transition-attack will be enough to break their hyper armor and stop them from hitting me.

I notice it all the time with the bloodletter too. The first R1 attack almost never breaks hyper armor, but the second one and every one after that does - even if the first one missed. Same thing with the tricked axe. The R1 thrust attack only breaks the hyper armor of small and weak enemies, but the R1 overhead swing after it will stop the attacks of most enemies. R2's almost always break it. Jump attacks too.

Really, it depends on the enemy and how heavy their attack is. With the fist of Gratia, you can break the hyper armor of huge bosses like Laurence in like two or three punches, and it makes him stunned for a while. Hyper armor just seems just like a different implementation of poise that is more a part of your weapon's moveset instead of your character's stats. It can even be boosted with a lead elixir.

what's the deal with Yahar'Gul? Why is it considered a different, "unseen city" and not just another borough of Yharnam? Is it cordoned off and abandoned, like Old Yharnam?

How long ago did the Mensis ritual take place in Yahar'Gul? Because it looks like it happened many years ago. Everyone who looks to have been involved is as decomposed as a mummy. But how could it have been years ago if they just did it to summon the red moon on the night of the game's events? (I reason this because the bagmen were just killed and Hypolean Gaol was overrun, and because of the notes about stopping the ritual near your cell in the jail).

And all those people lining the walls who look like they're trying to escape - are they the people of Yahar'Gul? Or are they regular Yharnamites who were captured by the kidnappers / bag men? Because it looks like the ritual was performed while Yahar'Gul was having a normal day, with its citizens walking around in the streets doing their business right up until it destroyed them

Surely Yahar'Gul was normal at one point. But the game doesn't depict it the same way as Old Yharnam. It seems more like a place of pure evil, not a victim to it

They managed to keep the whole thing hidden and out of sight mostly due to the power of the Great Ones keeping it a secret (why we can see everything after Rom). It's more or less part of Yharnam as it is affected by the Blood Moon. The ritual itself was an ongoing process which took a very long time (needed to collect all those corpses and have another Blood Moon), they just kept the scholars waiting in that building off Advent Plaza. The people on the walls are both Yahar'gul citizens and captured Yharnamites who were likely killed during the ritual, as they didn't need them to finish their little science project.

Preset Lower Himtertomb

Layer 1 pre-boss bonus room. Go through the coridoor, up the ladder, drop off the staircase with a spider on it, then run through another hallway and turn right in the room with a ladder and a ghost. Once in the treasure room kill the zombie dude hiding to the right of the entrance and then head as far right as you can WALKING ONLY push the analogue stick as little as you can. Creep along the right side of the room, get behind Clarence and backstab + visceral him. With a Saw Cleaver I was able to reliably chain-backstab him but if you arnt level 10 you should be able to kill him in one backstab.

He drops 16.5% +14.9 flat cursed Physical gems. Other effects include Slow Poison, Rapid Poison, Beast and Kin Hunter. I don't think there is any other effects in Hintertomb.

Hyper armour is Temperory poise that only lasts the duration of certain attack animations. Poise (they called it "super armour" in the offical guide though) is always active.

Players have 0 poise by default and the only way to get any is by chugging Lead Elixor. Weapons all have different amounts of hyper armour on different attacks.

Enemies can have poise, usually the bigger ones. Meaning they can do whatever the fuck they want even while you are wailing on them. Every attack in the game has a poise-damage value, EG blades of mercy R1 spam do almost none, while a Kirkhammer R2 will break almost anything a poise.

You know how the Upper Cathedral Ward is locked off from everyone else and it's the Choir's HQ? Yahar'gul is the same but for Mensis. People don't live in these areas, they are strictly Church-controlled.

The Mensis ritual is taking place as you go around doing your shit, the big melting down of the people was a single huge event that happened as you were going through Burgertown and killing Rom. The husks fused to the walls were all the people the Kidnappers took to the city.

There was a Mensis ritual before this one, too, I dunno what they did then but it didn't require all those people. I think it was Old Yharnam that got wiped out last time. The note near the Charred set says 'the red moon hangs low'. Everyone in there are beasts because the moon came down once before. I think maybe that's when Mensis got mummified and made contact with Mergo.
