Is there any trick to making up your own build besides just making sure that you grab a lot of health? I never feel like I never know what keystones are worth leveling towards and end up with a build that can barely survive in merciless.

Playing sire of shards cwc incin fireball nicebuild™ i made s scion

i grabbed deadeye and ranger start but i cant figure out what to grab as my second class, im torn between slayer and berzerker.

Slayer would give me good single target which is all i need right now with the culling strike+30% inc dmg vs rare/uniques and the overkill leech is nice

Berzerker gives the nice 10% more damage and the 1% leech and thats all really. The 5% increased damage taken is a big downside that slayer doesnt have and the cast speed on a savage hit is useless for me (if anything detrimental because it will fuck my mana).

Is the 10% more worth it over the 30% inc+Culling strike? It shouldn't be because the culling is more or less a 10% more anyway isnt it?

I personally love cwc + scorching ray + ice spear + GMP. I'm addicted to that ice spear sound and this setup just shit them out fast enough. And with the proper setup my ice spear do fire + chaos damage now anyways so its basically like fireball that crit a lot.

e.g. sr cwc firestorm has synergy because you scale duration for both, and firestorm has a long cast time that is bypassed by cwc, sr provides decent trash clear, sr+firestorm is good single target

sr cwc fireball has poor synergy since you want lmp/gmp for fireball at the very least, does nothing for sr
you want aoe scaling, does nothing for sr
both are decent at clearing trash but mediocre for single target so you're not patching out each other's weakness

rule of thumb: if you can't get most of the potential out of a skill on a 4L, don't use it with cwc

Congratulations your retarded idea just made life equal to ES but life can still gulp and build defences.

The problem with life are defences: evasion, block, elemental and physical resists are memes and getting 250-300% ES on the tree is better than 200+% hp and defensives nodes.

Remember when 150% was the minimal amount of hp for a functional life build? I would say if you don't have at least 200% nowadays your build is trash.
ES is out of control because our defensive options stagnated or are broken (armour).

The objective is to make it so that your skill tree isn't entirely pathing from life node to life node so every tree isn't a copypaste of going to the bottom left of the tree to get 200% life and then you have maybe 10 points to splash for flavor.
