Alright, I'll try to write a sort of guide. It's going to be shit but I hope that the concepts will be clear.

Because the game is really easy and getting overlevelled is even easier. That mod is basically a way to limit the excessive stats growth before the game turns into something too easy.

There are people here who don't mind the fuckton of exp the game tosses them, so I think that you can play the game as it is first and then decide. Just keep in mind that this alternative exists and use it if you feel like you're levelling up too much.

It depends on your own playstyle, but have my opinion:

If you don't care about secondary quests/ fetch quests / playing and testing different classes and generally don't dick around, and just want to do a fast paced first playthrough, vanilla is still somewhat fine.

If you usually do a decent amount secondary contents, I'd recommend the Slight plot, without that normal mode is basically easy mode.

If you usually do a lot of secondary contents, want to play as many classes during the same playthrough, and want something harder, then the Steep plot.
If you won't do many secondary contents but want something that can resemble a hard mode, then the Steep plot + normal mode works fine.

If you are a completist who wants to complete the whole game in a single playthrough then the plateau plot is essential, I'm saying that because that's what I'm doing right now.
If you aren't a completist but still want to do a good amount of secondary contens and dicking around AND you want some harder challenge, than the Plateau plot + normal mode are your best bet.

In the OP there isn't written the a really important thing about it: hard mode gives you double exp.
That means that in the beginning you get one shotted, after that extra exp and extra money make it much, much easier,
As it’s written in the OP, the actually hard parts of hard mode are: skills taking a fuckton of stamina bar and knockback/stagger/knowdown resistance. That’s the fact, now have an opinion about it: the problem is that stamina is already absolutely fine in nomal mode, increasing his consumption and the extra knockback/stagger/knowdown resistance just make the gameplay poorer (the latter is especially true for red classes). Basically it’s much nearer to the concept of “artificial difficulty” than being a proper hard mode.

You can, but less pawns means a a lot of extra exp, so in that case the AexpT mod becomes necessary.

NG+ is there for a reason. There is literally no reason to 100% the game on your first playthrough. No reason to min-max due to stats from gear. No reason to sperg about mods and being "unplayable" without.

answering this question before it even comes up. No. You can play through the game normally without even paying attention to throttling and still have an excellent experience. NG and Hard Mode were designed to expand upon this.

This isn't Dark Souls twinking try to NG+ at level 1 with all equipment. It plays as most recent bamco games do in menus and that's it.

I have 47 hours in the game, rank 9 vocation sorcerer on my main and my pawn, Sinew on both (fighter leveled). Ranger level 6 on both.

My main is level 33 and I have the entire world map opened and I've not entered into stage 2 yet.

Im building a magic archer and I have the rank 9 vocation augments from sorc and I will gain the clout from warrior.

If you cannot throttle yourself then you have no place in trying to min-max. Each level has been leveled by either sorcerer or strider for max stat gain. you can do this without mod help.

I've always seen the trading thing as bad as it encourages people to beg for things they shouldn't have access to yet. Asking for a bloodred crystal isn't so bad because strigoi aren't a big deal and rng can be a bitch, but some people go around asking for death drops when they've never killed him, or level 3 weapons when they haven't finished bbi, or late main game equips when they're just starting out. Too many people are willing to oblige and ruin the game for those people. I see it as no different from cheating and just adding the items directly to your inventory.

There's your problem. Utilitarian is popular, the other useful ones are Mitigator, sometimes Challenger, and rarely Guardian depending on playstyle. Scather is fine and pretty good IMO for a tank fighter, but he might climb things too much.

For skills, Shield Drum doesn't do much, honestly, since aggro is based off of damage dealt. Divine Defense is fine, but it might make your pawn act too defensive to properly draw aggro.

My time is awful, the record is like 15 minutes or something. Port crystal placement is the main thing, in addition to already having any quest items needed, like wyrmking ring and watergod altar slates and wakestones. There already is one in the OP. The problem is people add their pawn to the list and then stop playing but don't remove it so the rift crystals and knowledge people might get them from a rental goes to waste. A lot of people want their rentals to go to people who would actively have a use for the rc and knowledge.

I have no idea. I've been playing it since the PS3 release and never really stopped. I bought the game 5 times and on my last playtrough, I completed every quest and got every item/armors and weapons in the game.

Well I bougth it 4 times and a kind anon from here offered it to me on Steam.
I had extreme bad luck with game. I lost one, my uncle broke one. I bougth the vanilla version because I was too stupid to read the title correctly the first time I wanted this game. And the last one got corrupted god knows why, it couldn't get past the title screen.

I'm going to give this game another chance after writing it off when it was released.

How does Dark Arisen differ from the vanilla game? Is it DLC, a sequel, or a remaster with extra content? Do I need to buy both or can I buy one or the other?

Do you guys use the hookmod to delevel your pawns? was thinking of trying it and get my pawn out of the 200 abyss

apart from what the other anon said, it also fixes and breaks some bugs, rebalances classes, armor and weapons. the pc version also adds an eternal ferrystone in your inventory so you don't have to worry about fast travel
if your planning to get it, definitely get Dark Arisen with PC being the preferable version

Just as an aside do you have any advice for someone starting from scratch again? I remember having issues with long travel times and getting oneshot by mobs when I last played. Also, does the game encourage freely swapping jobs, or is it better to just pick one and go with it? Mystic Knight sounded cool, but I rarely play as an archer in games so I think I'll go with that.

That's alleviated a bit in Dark Arisen, where you get a free Eternal Ferrystone you can use to fast-travel to portcrystals. Two portcrystals are permanently installed in Grand Soren and Cassardis, and as you play the game you can collect more of them which you can place freely anywhere in the overworld.

It's a bit of both. Different vocations gain different stats as they level up. End-game equipment marginalises your character's stats anyway so you shouldn't worry about it too much, but thinking about the kind of playstyle you're most interested in and not gaining too many levels in vocations that have a completely different orientation would make sense.

Independent of stats and levels, as you defeat enemies you also get Discipline Points. As you rank up in any vocation, you unlock new skills and augments, the latter of which are carried over between vocations.
As an example, you can grind Ranger to get the Stability augment, and then make good use of it as a Sorceror.

As far as just getting good for dodging goes, I guess it's as good an argument as any.

The portcrystal stuff being added in Dark Arisen sounds really relieving, too. I'll definitely pick it up again.

Nah, it works like this:
You have a vocation (job), and battling enemies makes you rank up in that vocation, and gives you DP.
As your rank in a vocation increases, you unlock new skills and augments you can buy with your DP (and equip afterwards).

Some skills are shared between vocations (for example yellow vocations have some dagger skills in common, the magic-users share a few spells), others are exclusive to one vocation only.
For example, you may buy the sword skill Dire Gouge as an Assassin, only to find out you can't use it even if you use a sword as a Fighter. These skills are what set the vocations apart.

Augments however can be used by any vocation. These are passive buffs—they reduce damage taken, increase one of your offensive stats, let you carry more weight, climb faster, and other stuff like that.

While you don't want to gain too many levels = stats in random vocations, you do want to grind ranks in different vocations (by fighting many low-level enemies) so you unlock their augments that you can use elsewhere.

Knight is harder to play properly I think. At least getting those blocks just right isnt that easy. For me at least. I think he would be more challenging.

You can just not use the OPish skills they both have. But I think Archer is a lot more easier.
