There's something off with Shens kit.I'm thinking he plays like a fighter rather than a tank, yet doesn't have the numbers or abilities to be an effective tank, nor does he have the abilities to be effective 1v1 as a fighter. I don't know if it's the way Q works or how lacking his E is but something not right. As if I'm too reliant on everyone else doing better than I am to be useful.

I haven't experienced this same problem with Poppy or Malphite and I can't figure out why.

If you can stay alive and get pot shots at their front line or their assassins as your Alistar juggles them you'll be doing a lot more work then positioning in the open and getting caught.
Only go for the sneaky squishy slaying if they aren't able to reach you when you ult, or if their way to engage you is on CD.

Poppy, Naut, Mao, and Malph top. They provide enough utility, have enough built in damage, and have enough inherent tank stats/abilities that they don't need to win lane to be insanely useful later on.

Amumu, Zac, Rek'Sai, Xin for jungle. Simplistic champs with high impact at all stages of the game. Build full tank on all of them and just CC whoever you can.

Cait, Jinx, Trist, Sivir for ADC. Again, simplistic auto-based carries that are generally safe in lane and spike in power after 2 items. Just avoid walking in melee range late game and right click who ever is closest to you.

Janna, Nami, Soraka, Sona for Support. Pretty much the embodiment of "you do all the work, I'll stand behind you and press buttons" Just suck the dick of your team's highest damage and you should collect the Freelo pretty quickly.

In regards to recent champions, Jhin, Aurelion Sol, Ivern, Kindred, Illai and Camille have some pretty great lore and characterization though.
