Was a female protagonist really so much to ask for? Maki was destined to survive or at least have a huge role in the plot.
Ki-bo was going to survive no matter what.
Saihara is boring and also pretty good chance for survival.
The only thing that surprised me and didn't bore me was Himiko. I was really hoping for some curveballs to hit us and for the surviving cast to be more... just, prominent, but we got a lot of 'safe' characters instead.

Now that all the shock and anger at easily the weakest twists in the series has died down, I'm left just feeling... Empty.

None of this has any substance, literally two compelling survivors out of five, one of whom would've been better as a body, not to mention a character who would've been interesting as doomed but major supporting cast ending up being the least appealing main character the series has has so far. Blatantly shoehorning in the first two games' cast into the main story purely because they can, and the first-half deaths of literally every character I was excited to see go far. Like literally everyone from Akamatsu to the chapter 3 victims were people I had high hopes for. The literal fucking snowball of evidence crushing the nonzero-at-first chance that the trophy icons were just a prank.

I don't think I've ever been burnt out on DR in the five years I've been a fan of it, but god if this doesn't end up being executed FAR better than it sounds, if Himiko and Saihara and Shirogane don't end up being so much more entertaining than literally everything has led us to believe. God fuck I can't even finish this sentence man.

DR's greater universe has always been goofy and stupid and out of left field, yeah, but at
least the internal logic of each one made for a compelling story with a lot of characters you can care about. Not to mention that none of them literally killed every single interesting character in rapid succession until just shy of the halfway point of the game. It was more sporadic, and some based people managed to survive into every finale.
