-Executively produced by Tim Miller, who wanted to make a more stylish film, and was kicked out of Deadpool 2 for that.

-The film will be "somewhere between light-hearted and serious" (similar to SA1, Unleashed, and the Storybook games)

Oh. Well, the OVA is decent, but the amount of new, unexplained content really hampers the film. Like, the Land of the Sky and the Land of Darkness. Why did Eggman build Eggmanland in the Land of the Dark? Does he live there? The Land of the Dark looks suspiciously like an abandoned metropolitan city. Was there a disaster that forced the humans and animals to move to the Land of the Sky, or even create it? It's just incredibly surreal.

Sans is a guy who lost nearly everything, and tried desparately to go back, to undo everything and regain what/who he lost, until he gave up and realized he'll never see 'em again. And after that, had to suffer with the realization that an anomaly in the timespace continuum was "resetting" the timeline, and since everything is going to be reset anyway, all your progress sent back to zero with no memory of it, then what's the point of doing anything? Why even try? So Sans pretty much gave up on doing anything period, and the only thing keeping him from succumbing to complete and utter apathy and nihilism and depression is the only thing he has left: his younger brother Papyrus.

Sans lost one of his brothers, Gaster. To time and space. The details of how exactly and why are shrouded in mystery. He was the Royal Scientist and it involved a experiment gone wrong, likely determention. Sans manages to maintain a connection the Gaster, but it's unknown how it all works.

Chara falls into the underground, becomes friends with Asriel and the King and Queens adopted kid.

Hating humanity and knowing full well the humans will attack Asriel in the process and restart the war between Monsters and Humans.Chara poisons themself so Asriel will absorb their soul and go to the surface world.

Asriel dies back in the castle, his ashes spreading into the flowers.

Dr Alphys comes along and becomes the Royal Scientist.

Secretly tasked by the King, Dr Alphys gets to work on making a way through the barrier without the use of Human souls.

In one of her experiments, She starts injecting determination into dead subjects to see if they will come to life. The test succeeded, at the cost of accidentally warping her subjects souls in the process. They eventually merge together in packs.

Knowing she is on the right track, she then takes the same process and applied it to something not living. Without a soul. A flower.

Unknown to her, the flower is steeped in Asriel's ashes. Monster ashes have a funny effect of infusing themselves on something they've been touched, allowing that monsters essence to live on in that thing.

Because Chara's soul was joined with Asriel's at the time of death, they are joined together in one. Without the mortal coil of a living body to hold them back, Chara fights and Asriel gives in. With the power of the two souls, their own humanity and determination, Chara is allowed to reset the timeline at will.

Sans can fight as much as he wants, but he can't stop a reset. He gives in and becomes lazy. Knowing full well the biggest thing he can do is rob Flowery of their fun until something happens.

Like everything else voice related, it's 100% on the writing and voice direction. The entire current cast has all put out varied enough roles that there's no question that they're simply doing the voices that the writers and directors want them to do. The problem lies with those and not the voice actors. Yes, including for Shadow.

Gaster isn't confirmed to be Sans' brother. Chara and Asriel's Souls ... "vanished" after they (well, Asriel) died. Asriel (as Flowey) and Chara (within Frisk) no longer have their SOULs anymore.

Anyways

Asriel / Flowey, in my opinion, is almost like what a shadow-archetype of Tails would be. Tails became who he is now because he had Sonic to guide him and mentor him and help him become stronger and believe in himself and stuff. But Asriel had Chara. Chara wasn't the best person, they hated humanity, and they were very subltly manipulative of their 'brother'. And when they had Asriel absorb their soul and they became a powerful godlike being, Chara wanted to use Asriel's godlike power to kill and wipe out all the humans. Asriel resisted and refused to attack, but was killed by the humans in the process. So when he was revived as a soulless flower, and could no longer feel his compassion or love towards anyone, they "realized" that in this world, it's Kill or Be Killed, and combine that with their new Determination and reset-abilities, "Flowey" eventually became a psycho murderous flower with no sense of "consequences", and doing everything from helping everyone to killing everyone in every possible way, just to see what would happen.

Someone like Asriel/Flowey is sort of like asking 'What if Tails had Shadow instead of Sonic?' or something along those lines.

In Undertale, once you start paying more attention to how Flowey behaves and stuff...

Flowey is obsessed with Chara. Even though he can't feel love or compassion, he is still obsessed with Chara. Flowey is obsessed with Chara and thinks Chara's the only one that understands him, and he idolizes Chara as well and thinks they're the greatest being who ever lived. And, Flowey's actual motivation for his "kill or be killed" mentality is that he feel like he betrayed Chara when he refused to kill the humans and died because of it. He feels like he betrayed Chara, which is the absolute worse he could feel, because before they both died, Chara was very emotionally manipulative of Asriel to the point that Asriel couldn't even think of doing anything to make Chara think he'd betray or even doubt them. It's that kind of behavior and mentality that Flowey had before he fought Frisk as ASRIEL DREEMURR THE ABSOLUTE GOD OF HYPERDEATH that I'm talking about when I say it's similar to what a Shadow-Archetype of Tails would be like.
