The thread is dedicated to all games about building machines and systems out of blocks, in space or otherwise. Also, all these games are ded. Only ded games may join, otherwise they must have their own thread.
Whether or not a game belongs in /egg/ is a case by case matter, however games that would belong in /svgg/, space voxel games general, are automatically considered /egg/
WebM for retards:

Thanks for the input. I sort of wanted to do transport with pipes. I wanted the player to be able to have several factories on different planets, all producing and selling automatically. I wanted true resources to be counted in terms of products per second, anything that isn't renewable should quickly run out, forcing you to build self-sufficient factories. Hence the pipes, because I'd want some sort of simplified model of all your factories running all the time. I'd imagine simple buffer would be lighter in computation than a belt. I see that I'll have to rethink some aspects of this mechanic

Are you pirate or hunter?
Because I just started hunter and some faggot already mined half of iron there and I wondered if I should rather start on EU and then warp to NA with my ship, is it even possible?
Project Moon Base continues!
I fucked up badly enough in Survival mode that I'm trying to make it in Creative and then blueprint it over.

The /egg/ group is Hunter, but yeah, all the big factions have already hit the starter planets and are eating up all the ore as fast as possible, or slapping down a dozen mining drones over ore deposits to make them thousands of ore every hour.
Seems like /egg/s motivation was killed after the base got nuked? Im still up for playing.

HWS are the only servers with a large population for whatever fucking reason.
Probably because they make the game easy mode by having their special website integration stuff like storage and mining drones for you that exist outside the game. It makes the game ridiculously easy to play, and lets people build massive ships no problem, instead of being an autistic space dwarf and mining out entire mountains with your bare hands to crush your enemies with a huge capital ship.

FUCKING WHITE FLAYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERS
Hey, seems the like HWS server admins are finally clueing in on the starter planets.
Big post about it today on their forums.
>Starter Planets
>"People laughed about the "missing" Noob Protection rule in HWS 4.0. Large factions and veterans came back and raided the Starter Planets so new people got no chance in placing Auto Miners or capture a POI.
We try to implement soon an automatic way to not allow such players to return at all. It is just not good for the whole universe balance.
For now the new rule applied that you only can have 1 CV on the Starter Planets and Outpost. Either private or in faction."
>>164145905
do you have a link to that post
>>164146220
https://forum.empyrion-homeworld.net/t/happy-new-year-announcement/3239
Seems like the guy has some trouble tryping in english, but most of it can be made out pretty well.
For now they will only allow a faction to have a single capital vessel on starter planets. They plan to later make it impossible for "experienced" players to return to a home planet and rape all the rescources leaving newbies with nothing.
The game already supports a system where certain players/factions can be denied access to landing on certain planets, where they get several automated warnings and eventually their ship gets auto deleted and the pilot teleported into orbit.
Theres probably a way to have that type of system be applied to each individual player, so once they leave the starter system a switch gets turned over and they can never land on the starter planet again without getting warnings, or doing a full character reset.
Anyone have Astroneer and can verify that its a good game?
>>164148056
It's okay, you could probably get a few hours out of it. It's mega blocks tier simple with upgrade and inventory management mechanics. The rover and truck controls are floaty and wonkey as fuck. The shuttle orbiting and going to other planets is one button and not really realistic in it's approach. I could make a few webms.
>>164149372
Please oblige, I'd enjoy it to give me a better idea.
>>164149625
Also the game is in early access, it has a few quirks. When you spend enough time near an area the terrain starts to break. There is also a lot of random frame drops.

well, as you can see it, with the wrong selection of stuff, you can get 25-30 fps with a single ship.
On space with no planets and low density asteroids might work.
Maybe for the end of the next year, they will have the new "dont render what you dont see" stuff and maybe it will improve.

After getting nowhere on the phone, we eventually sent someone out to have a look at it. It was one of the old QIC tapes, the ones that have a hefty metal plate down one side that physically prevents you from putting them in the wrong way around. Our fearless customer was not to be deterred, however. When she couldn't push the tape in (because it was the wrong way around), she tried forcing it in, but to no avail. Then she resorted to getting a spoon and using it as a lever to force the tape into the drive. Not surprisingly, it wouldn't come out the following morning. She needed a new tape drive."

Transport Fever. The cities build themselves around your supply of resources, and you have to build railroads and trucking/shipping/plane routes to connect production chains and move people. Arguably more simplified than Transport Tycoon, but nicer to look at.
>>164208283
That's unfortunate since there's no seperate city builder and management general. /beng/ - Building & Engineering would be neat.
>>164208283
More than anything city planning barely qualifies as civil engineering. The game automates all the engineering aspects that reshapes the terrain and makes the little grey concrete squares your buildings go on. Dwarf Fortress has greater claim to being Civil Engineering than city builder games.

Mind you, I found your base by that second day (remember this picture?), which made your incompetence obvious.

Now you're just taking the piss. It's not like in city builders you go "commence the city building" and everything does itself automatically.
Just to take Transport Fever as an example, I have to plan railroads with extreme caution to terrain in mind since they can only have a very low inclines, train speeds drop the tighter my curves get and building tunnels, bridges and banks drives up the costs exponentially. Furthermore certain rail types or bridge types have limited top speeds. More likely than not I'll have to account for multilane corridors, passing points, junctions and so on. Then I have to plan routes from stop to stop, outfit them with signals and waypoints so they won't hold up each other, and put trains together from different locomotives and trailers available to me in that era given their purchase costs, running costs, lifespan, power, tractive effort, top speed and the expected passenger or cargo volume.
Surely Dwarf Fortress is the pinnacle of autismal complexity, but unless you're playing Transport Fever on a flat map on easy difficulty you're usually going to barely scrape by.

That's a part of it. I teach English in general, including literature, rhetoric, composition, and English as a 2nd language. For what it's worth I'm at the college level; I pity high school teachers; having taught English in China for a while and dealing with teenagers...ugh. Nothing convinced me to teach at a college more than that experience.
Relevant to the thread, though, I'm about ready to leave this planet, perhaps for good. Built my moon base and might have enough leftover material to make a capital ship. Once I do that I think I'll feel confident enough to join y'all in some multiplayer shenanigans if that's okay.

Critique of literature from a feminist perspective, that is, examining how certain literary texts reinforce patriarchal power structures and the oppression of women. Most recently I did a piece on Terry Pratchett's novel Equal Rites and how it's not really as female-empowering as it looks at first glance. Before that I presented at a conference about how Piers Anthony is just plain gross in general.
It kind of hurts to eviscerate my favorite authors this way, but that's how it goes.
I don't really keep up with which wave of feminism is which, hence my definition above. But as I said before, literary criticism is only one of the things I do and probably the smallest. If you want to talk about teaching composition, though, let's do this.

Makes it sound like you're in the deep south of America. I've never encountered anything like that, being a Canuckcuck.
Also, fun thing worth noting; January 15, 1987.
That's when that book was published. How is it relevant to modern outlooks on society? Granted, 1984 is becoming a fuckmothering instruction manual for the government of most countries, so perhaps I'm entirely incorrect.
>>164215661

Not quite the Deep South. I'm in Kansas.
I chose to do Equal Rites initially intending to compare it to a later Pratchett novel, A Hat Full of Sky, to examine how the author developed his ability to create heroines that were viable from a critical standpoint over time, but there was enough to say about Equal Rites that it kind of took over the whole research.
>How is it relevant to modern outlooks on society?
The late 80's and 90's saw a huge boom in young adult fantasy literature. Most of it was Conan-the-Barbarian type stuff, you know, big strapping heroes going up against other big strapping heroes. I picked a novel that ostensibly went against that grain and put it under the magnifying glass. Turns out it doesn't really hold up either. Is it relevant to contemporary studies? No, but historical research is valuable in its own right.
>>164216103
>otherwise you'd be just coming up with various ways of labeling literally all literature as sexist
I had a Big Long Thing written out here but I don't want to stay off topic. In short, though, lots and lots of literature (and everything else) IS sexist, and as a society we're so used to it that we kind of stop noticing after a while. That's what people mean when they say 'the patriarchy'.
How do you go about joining a MP game? Gotta fix up the roof and then install that turret, then I might give it a go.

Point to me a reformative cause in all of history, and I will find you a man covered in shit.
I agree with a lot of what """REAL"""" feminists have to say. My girlfriend is openly bi, and I've gotten her to be a lot more confident and comfortable around myself and others. That's my "BUT I HAVE A BLACK FRIEND SO I CAN SAY NIGGER TOO" equivilent.
But I'll never support the cause actively, or even associate myself with it, because there's too many men running around, waving LGTBQ+2/5^7 flags, screaming how much of a feminist they are. Covered in shit.
>>164217848
I took ladybug from workshop mainly for it's good drill placement that allows it to dig perfect tunnels and then climb it 90 degree upward like crazy and built a turret on it since world is full of underwater meteorites. I think turret screws with tilt, but when I added another hover near it tilt reversed instead. Thinking about adding artificial mass near cockpit to balance stuff out.
>>164218260
In other news, the Moon Base is up. Any good cap ship designs from the Workshop you want to recommend? Time to move on to the next level.
Initially I was trying to build my own Moon Base (and I still have half of it up in Creative mode) but it got frustrating and tiring so I just grabbed something off the workshop and made some modifications to it.

If you would look at the handy dandy image, with that pink trajectory that you won't actually ever see in game, you'd realize that it looks kinda strange compared to an actual free return trajectory, right? Like the injection and ejection paths don't cross?
Maybe that's because you can't switch focus to any body in KSP, shit for brains? Maybe because KSP doesn't actually simulate N-body physics, and the focus is always on the sphere of influence? And maybe, more importantly, it's because it won't model the Moon's influence until you're in its "sphere of influence", and therefore can never actually get a free return trajectory in relative retrograde, you know, like an actual free return trajectory is meant to be done?
Just in case, I'll quote it for your stunted half-chimp brain, alright?
>A circumlunar free-return trajectory around the Moon. The spacecraft passes behind the Moon. It moves there in a direction opposite to that of the Moon. If the craft start in a normal (west to east) direction near Earth, then it makes a figure 8.
Notice the "in a direction opposite to that of the Moon." In KSP's stunted retard-mechanics, you can only achieve a bizarre fucking prograde orbit that's just a plain old fucking hohmann transfer.
And before you can even ask, no, the other method, the 'cislunar method' is not even remotely possible in KSP, as it requires lunar intercept rather than a capture.

It wont run so good on planets, but may do on space and with not that much stuff.
I wish there was a really good way to weaponize heavy objects and throw them into ships, or build reasonably sized rail guns that are not a pain in the ass to load.
I've experimented with ultra heavy objects and grav gens and they DO pack a punch, but they're pretty much stationary and difficult to load properly.

That's a level of granularity that's not typical of city building games. I know Railroad Tycoon has similar design challenges but then they ONLY do trains. Most other games you pretty much can say "commence the building" and it happens, because the emphasis is on synergy of the gameplay elements, not on searching for a suitable site to begin with or dealing with the challenges of a less ideal site (again, Dwarf Fortress can be made or broken just from your starting site), both of which are core elements of actual civil engineering.

Just came in here to say fuck FTL. Bullshit game has way too much RNG for how fucking short it is. Managed to get hacking on the Noether ship with a second beam weapon and was fucking cleaning house.
Then I got the "intruder event". No problem, I prepared. Doors can lock so I started to suffocate them. Now whatever the fuck its called when the station fires at the ship, manages not only to hit me, but to fucking hit the oxygen door control and breach the fucking ship. They run right to engines for some reason so I open more of the ship. Then it the station hits again and hits THE FUCKING OXYGEN.
I start attacking the intruders as I can, cycling them out to heal, and the NEXT FUCKING SHOT HITS US AGAIN AND HITS THE FUCKING MEDBAY

It is fine. I used to play Space Engineers on my laptop which had a mid lowend gpu. AMD m265 R7. Spce played ok, planets were laggy as fuark but...
>i5 6500
>z170 motherboard
Non-K Skylake processors are able to be overclocked on Z170s. Just do a google search for a guide. It is easy.
My desktop specs are:
i3 6100 overclocked to 4.3ghz
AMD 380x 4GB
24 GBs of RAM
240 GB SSD and 480 GB SSD for storage
I get more than 50 fps on planets, all settings high. The problem with Space Engineers is that the game only one core, one thread for physics calculations. Thus, if a lot ofthings were going on in Space Engineers, your i5 will only have 25% of the CPU usage, that's assuming there is absolutely nothing else running in the background.

That game is so much fun. I remember the developers released a huge patch for additional content for free. I bought the game 3 - 4 times. That's why I continue to even bother with indie games these days.
Anyway, Send your cews to the back room, one of the your crewmates to the door controls, open the airlock and the adjacent rooms the intruders are in to make them die of suffocation. If they break the door down to another room, do it again, letting air out of the room they just etered.
One of the first upgrades I do on ships on FTL is upgrade the door security systems, especially with the weakling crewmates like those energy beings.
>>164264837
Even better idea,>>164265984
I didn't see the medbay at first(I never used that ship layout before), send all your crew to the medbay making sure the medbay is powered. The intruders will eventually make their way to your crew to fight your crew in the medbay. The heals from the medbay is a tad bit more than the dps the intruders deal.

I'm making a post on ftd steam forums about balance, I want your opinion guys. Currently I see 3 problems:

>forumite designs on the campaign

>>164285179
I know, but I have time on my hands and I don't care about being dindu banned from the steam discussions. Currently this is what is going to get posted (incomplete version)
When will the development of this game will gear towards making what we already have and what is planned to be added work together nicely? I know the developer doesn't have the luxury of abundant time at hand but there are things which impact the game greatly in my opinion and that have been going for a long time and haven't been touched. My list currently is
1) CRAMs are better in almost every way in comparison with Adv cannons, and have the bonus of not being explosive. That in a game where currently armor of both the turret and the ship is checked for explosion damage is a big thing.
2) A similar thing happened to steam engines, they are better than normal engines in almost every way except size.
3) Leaving the designs of campaign ships for the community is a sensible decision for a developer without time, but it needs filters. Most ships outside of the first enemy faction is completely min-max metagamed shit. Which forces the player to min-max and pick the specific meta of that version to win, either be crams, propellers, n shield layers etc
>>164285268
Is not checked together ***

Why do I do this.
It's supposed to be kind of like the Super galaxy dai-gurren, that is, a ship-shaped body with a bridge sticking up from the top. Ideally there will be cannons and hangar bays on the sides for fighters and heavy weaponry. Assuming I don't give up though. Would /egg/ be interested in this?

How do I into long range in ftd?
I want cannons on coast but while I've had some success with the crams, they're too slow and I think advanced cannons would be better for this, correct?
Can I avoid using railguns? What is a good caliber/ ammo design?
Target is lightly armored shielded vessels (white flayers for now), I'd be satisfied with being able to hit reliably one square away, ideally 1.5.
Also, what's the size of the grid on the map?
>>164296497
A decent 152mm gun can reach 5000m (maximum AI targetting distance) with long barrels and armor piercing rounds, a 203mm can do it much easier and gives you the chance to carry explosives.

Yes, bigger will in theory always be better so long as you can accommodate the shell with longer barrels and loaders. There is some ballistic drop, but I'm not sure if it's air drag or gravity. Instead each shell has an arbitrary effective range after which is loses almost all of its speed over the course of a few seconds.

"Effective range" or whatever with slower projectiles.
>>164301562
Just looking at a modest 293mm/3m gun not set up for long range with a slow 360m/s the "effective range" is about 9km. At that distance wouldn't accuracy be a bigger issue than speed dropping off beyond that?
>>164285268
CRAMs really are better in every way
Except accuracy
... and speed
... and rate of fire
... and useful range
... and the ability to bypass shields
... and the ability to bypass armour
... and the ability to fuck shields and bring them down
... and the ability to go through water
... and the ability to autism APS systems into exactly whatever you want
But what good is that?
No, not much at all :^)
>>164306603
Crams mostly ignore shields afaik and they can do the fusing tricks. The biggest weakness is how easily they're stopped by laser systems imo
>>164308335
I feel they're really only good at point blank. The only effective CRAM platform I've built is the little 20,000 cost early game flyer that fires four cram cannons straight down, reloading at almost exactly the rate it makes passes and firing EMP missiles to hopefully slow enemies down and make them easier to hit.
Shit's situation as hell, but it eats slow and stationary opponents as long as they don't have AA, shields, or yeah it sucks other then early campaign.
I feel they really just need a piece to increase flight speed.
So I've built a big wall around my base in factorio, but there are a lot of nests inbetween my actual base and the wall. What are mechanics for spawning the nests? Will they respawn if I kill all nests inside walls at once? Should I plop turrets on green debug circles until they are no longer green?

Fighting a 150 Lighting Hood group. One of their ships's propulsion breaks and a jet follows it into the main tile for the Grey Talons. Suddenly mid battle I'm at war with them. Their main defense force spawns into the battle.
I - did - not - know - that - could - happen.
It was the first battle of the campaign where I didn't make a profit.
Then later this evening I accidentally had to fight 3 150 strength grey talon groups when I pathed through their tiles with a fleet I wasn't paying attention to. One of my jets pushed one of their tankier units 3 tiles away while I was looking somewhere else. It was so injured I just despawned it. All of my water craft are slow as hell, like, 14 m/s. The battle took ages and cost me over 40,000 material in repairs and fuel. I saved their and then spent a few hours mopping up the south east of the map and building more ships.
I captured a Lightning hood Beluga just as it was despawning. It glitched, causing it to be a blueprint but still count as an active ship. It constantly fell at 1 m/s through the world; it could not be repaired; it could not be taken out of play. It stopped the game from letting me save; it just errors when I try. I have to start over again at that last save.

All that code is bullshit
The good thing of programming is that they follow BINARY logic. For example, when you use an if(), the code inside the ( ) has to be a logic funcion that equals true or false.
Then these landwhales come here and decide that binary logic is too patriarchal, so they change the if for that perhaps (which is using an if anyways). That perhaps uses a random generated number that has a 80% chance of being 0, and making the if, and by extension, the perhaps, true.
TL;DR: They created a binary logic funcion that uses RNG to decide if it's true or false and call it "non binary".
Just imagine how fun it would be if you can't pay a transaction because the RNG says that it's not in the mood and tells you to check your privilegeI just woke up, if i'm mistaken with the code, please correct me

>lose 2 bases and like 10 ships when enemy tracks down a stolen ship to our base through a massive fucking bug
>dump all rescourses into a bigass capital ship and then promptly lose it on our first expedition into space with it, and then die multiple times trying to get it back, and fail

Every ship/base has a "core" in it, which is like the central computer. The core is what keeps the faction on your ship, and lets you acess all sorts of settingsn and other things.
Somebody shoots the core out, and whatever it was in stops functioning completely. Put your own core in, in its place and change the faction to your own and the ships basically yours now.
But theres a thing in the game that lets you track the location of your ship, and theres a glaring fucking bug that lets you track it ever after somebody blows out the core and puts their own core in and changes it to their faction.
We had a guy steal a ship and change the core and store it at our base, and this edgelord faggot tracked it to our base hidden in deep space and looted everything and then posted the co-ords in public chat so people could come take whatever he left behind. All while we were offline of course, and the offline protection is disabled on the server we are playing on.
>>164378178
That's sounds pretty much like a multiplayer killer bullshit...
>>164378002
>>164378178
fucking lel. You'll just have to not steal ships then for the time being. Just strip em of devices and fugg off.
Hopefully the CV will get a salvage laser holy shit that would be cool. Wouldn't be hard especially with the mining one they're working on.
Anyways I may come play with ya's but I'm a busy man between the 11 hours of sleep and all of the other procrastinating I gotta do during the day.
>>164378548
The best part was that the admins posted a big warning letting everyone know about the bug and that they will punish players for abusing it, after we threw a big stink about it.
But they wouldnt do anything about it happening to us.
Its also a tactic player factions have been using for a while to be dicks. They just leave bait ships around for players to "steal" and take back to their bases, so they can be tracked and ransacked when they go offline and offer no resistance.
>>164375378

>>164379549
Yeah we know to do that shit now, but we didnt when we had out deep space base and got fucked.
There were no warnings posted or anything. Players were using it to fuck people over and keep it hush hush from the devs and admins on servers.

Heres an upgrade to the Excrementus if anyone is interested. Pretty cheap, fairly mediocre armor but enough to keep you safe while you warp away from would be attackers. Great acceleration. A few guns to take care of any PoIs or some such. Has a hangar area for small HVs.
Only thing is, it doesn't have the best fuel efficiency, ~90 minutes of flight time on planets. But you can always refuel. Seats six and has an advanced constructor/fridge/o2.

i haven't played space engineers but i can review empyrion. i have 10 hours in the game because my friend got it for me. its not very good at all. all the enemies are braindead except STATIONARY turrets. the world generation is boring, there are no caves or interesting mapgen at all, only mountains and pathetic 'forests' with water that has no physics so you can die of fall damage in it, even mining itself is boring. and wouldn't you know it, sometimes worlds don't even spawn with all the minerals you need to even get off the fucking rock so enjoy restarting after spending 2 hours running around barren fucking nothingness spread far as fuck apart. last i tried it there wasn't even much of a punishment to dying you could just respawn where you died and thats that pick up your shit and move. the whole game is just you walking aimlessly until boop a waypoint shows up and points you to a deposit 500 meters away not even in your eyesight, its mindless. a lot of the features are frustrating; the first player in the game will spawn in a ship with a chest full of resources, second player wont, and progress relies on that box since you cant even mine without the tool in that chest so you rely on the first guy. you have to micromanage stupid shit like food and oxygen, pickup all the raw material individually after mining for no reason at all other than padding, deal with weight management, etc. i didn't get too far in the "mechanical" aspect as my friend built all of that while i roamed the world collecting food and resources and just strafejumped away from any enemies running into abandoned stations not a care in the world as the drones just miss and die in 10 pistol shots.

Kek. Press F4, find 355 Aquanaut pirates and press apply or something like that. Game won't allow us to invite ourselves, you need to apply.
>>164429495
I've already sent my application, an hour or so ago. It's still there. I guess only admins can see it. Are there any wildlife to kill on that planet? I'd like to progress through the tutorial if anything else.

Head back to base and I'll give you some stuff mate
Empyrion keeps fucking crashing on launch and fucking nothing works. I've tried verifying the cache through steam, reinstalling EAC, even redownloaded the whole fucking game again. The worst part is it was working fine this morning.
>>164429559
Actually git back next time, I'll remove core from one of our speedos and give you to it, then you just install it back and you probably will be able to use it. Either hunt stuff or you can just repetitively re-enter atmosphere to get tons of xp
>>164430681
I'll come again tomorrow
>>164414681
Our faction caolors are almost identical except I use gold instead of that neon blue.

>>164438821
I've actually seen this done twice irl. One guy test drove the car all the way around the block using the vice grips to steer and a bean-bag for a driver seat.
>>164440478
You've tried restarting the machine right?
>>164415756

Thanks anyway for your help, I think I'll try redownloading the the game again and that doesn't work I guess I'll file a bug report with the devs.
