I've done more tests

Out of 100 round the human won 41 times and the human500str 59. In the second set the human won 23 times and the human500str 77.

Out of 100 round the human won 48 times and the human500agi won 52. In the second set the human won 46 times and the human500agi won 54.

Out of 100 round the human won 53 times and the human500end won 47. In the second set the human won 26 times and the human500end won 74.

These results are strange, is the difference between 1400 endurance and 1500 endurance really that big? The human400end only won 56 times in the second set.

I wouldn't be too surprised. Endurance seems to be really strong since it not only makes it easier to recover from exhaustion, but also increases the point where you suffer exhaustion penalties.
Since exhaustion is basically a death sentence against an unexhausted enemy(especially when stacked with nausea) it basically puts the matches on a timer. If it doesn't end quick enough, the dude with lower endurance loses.

Still, I would expect agility to have a much bigger impact than the others. The guy with the higher agility controls the pace of the fight, and as long as he's not wasting that advantage trying to bite his opponent's teeth out, that usually means victory.


Also, totally unrelated, but I find it fascinating that the size of your heart and lungs actually improves the effect of endurance. If you increase a human's heart and lung size by 20% each, at max endurance they can sprint nonstop for nearly an entire day before they get tired, and all it takes is a few turns of walking to recover. It's like turning the whole race into vampires.

You can only remove the raw when generating a new world. You get crashes otherwise.
If you forgot to delete keas before generating your new world, all you have to do is add the [AQUATIC] tag so they airdrown as soon as they spawn.
Other methods include setting their body temperature to lethal extremes(though this is dangerous since they might set stuff on fire or freeze nearby objects), deleting all their internal organs, or changing their tissues to water and then setting their body temperature to water's boiling point.

Not the nearest thing, but the most recently produced/imported. It's a real pain sometimes. I recently had to use stockpile links to force my cook to use some honeybee royal jelly that had been sitting ignored one tile away from the kitchen for years. If you want to go full master chef with a variety of ingredients stockpile links are the way to do it. You can have your main food stockpile feed container-free 1-tile stockpiles that only accept certain kinds of food, which in turn give to the kitchen, so the cook has to select each ingredient from a different stockpile. It's heavy micromanagement on set up, but runs itself after that.

Like have someone paint it before world-gen or an entire exported world? Why bother, I've got a world here with a town that was sacked by a hydra, reclaimed, and then ended up with a single goblin hiding in a ruin somewhere for some reason. What is going on there? I dunno, but I look forward to finding them and asking.

Got another town that was taken over by elves at some point, how and when, dunno, worth checking though!

Tileset look doesn't make a difference. Tileset size and turning creature graphics on/off might make a very slight one on your computer in general, but it won't have an impact on the max speed of your game. The bottlenecks are elsewhere unless you have a seriously shitty PC from 2003.

That's not the problem. The issue is that the new system isn't integrated with a lot of the mechanics that made the old system matter.
As far as I know, fell and macabre moods are currently impossible, and I suspect tantrums are as well, based on tests involving confining an entire fortress of 60 dwarves onto a single tile burrow and leaving them trapped there for the two years it took for the entire fortress to starve.

You can run your fort entirely on water now, with no downsides whatsoever. Just set up camp next to a murky pool and let the dwarves drink straight from the stagnant water. Unless they try to clean wounds with it, nothing bad will happen.
With the old system, the only way to try and accomplish a sober fort was to have your entire fort packed to the brim with masterwork statues, engravings, furniture, and food, and to give each individual family a palace of their own so they got drowned in happy thoughts every time they ate, slept, or walked to a new location.
Nowadays the only reason to make alcohol is because it's easier than making a well.

The new system is just useless. It might as well not even be there at all.

What should I do with my starting animals? They are just running around my meeting areas driving me crazy. Can I mark them for slaughtering? Should I?
Also, a question about water and booze. Are they the same? Like, do dwarves need both booze AND water? Thanks for your help.

No idea how good that is, as I haven't used it myself. Make some farms and farm plump helmets, gather plants from outside. You can assign zones for animals to graze i > n > N. Getting some pigs is a good source of meat, as they don't require grass to survive and can be holed up underground pretty much.

Get farms, get still, get diningroom and well. The rest will fall into place over time

Ban kitchens from using plump helmets, plump helmet's don't give seeds when used in kitchens. Make a fishery and start with turkeys and you'll never run out of food if you build nest boxes.

Put into a pasture. i, then n, then N, then select. I usually just leave them and make sure to add all new animals to the pasture whenever a migrant wave arrives.

Dwarfs slow down over time if they don't drink alcohol, to the point where making a single thing will take months. Make alcohol, and make a well with a floodgate (have fun drowning your fort once or twice), because injured dwarfs and animals can't drink alcohol.

The dining room is asymmetric because I'm a retard and relied on muscle memory for counting instead of actually counting. I accidentally placed the starting table one to the right of where I meant to put it and before I realized it I had already put like 5 down. That I will admit was nooby.

The workshops are 5x5 because by putting stockpiles of material around them the dorfs have to move as little as possible to get pack to their workshop. My craftsdwarfs always have hauling disabled.

Strange moods happen semi randomly, there are multiple types, they all give artifacts. Artifacts are items of the highest quality possible, and are worth extreme amounts of dwarfbux. Weapon artifacts hit far harder and more accurately, armor artifacts absorb more damage of its type, etc, etc. Amulets and shit are basically useless for anything but raising the value of the fortress and being cool.

For some reason, ambushes disappeared as of 0.40, along with snatchers. 0.42 brought the snatchers back, although they're now pretty rare. The ambushes are still gone, though.

Cave crocodiles are what you're looking for. Not as flashy as tigers or grizzly bears maybe, but far more common and more dangerous too.

Animals suck in combat though. Crocodiles are probably among the best ones combat-wise, and they're unparalleled in their ability to mangle limbs permanently, but like all animals(or anything that relies on biting) they struggle to kill anything. They don't inflict enough bleeding to make blood loss a reasonable possibility, they don't do anything to torsos, and they can't sever or pulp anything, so unless they get lucky and decide to bite something's head off, they're going to pick a target, cripple them and then sit there biting them until a dwarf comes in the finish the kill.

So, there's the layer system right, and you can supposedly give a creature as many layers of different tissues as you want, all of them with declared different material properties and thicness. Not only this, but different body parts have different sizes and layers and materials
Then you combine that with the combat system that actually calculates forces and resistances for each body parts' tissue
Goddamn, fuck Spore. If the game understood stances/positions when atacking, and shapes of body parts, among other stuff, this alone would be the best creature combat system ever created
And its not even one of the most prioritized mechanics

All you're getting by playing 40.24 is worse performance, fewer features and several major bugs that have been fixed since then. It has literally no benefits over the current version.

It does actually.
Go into test arena, make two dwarves with master observer and have them fight, then control one.
Stand next to the other guy, look at what attack he's making, then check the attack menu and see what's easiest to attack. Then press , to advance the game one tick and check again.
There's a ton of depth there. Some times its best to wait for the enemy to attack, block it, then counterattack. Some times its better to attack while they're swinging and land a quick hit to the leg, which is vulnerable since they're putting all their weight on it during the swing. The best time to attack something's throat is right before it bites you, but if you're too slow it guarantees that the bite will land and you're definitely going to miss. Not to mention that positioning matters too.
If you use your left foot to kick someone's upper body from the front, it's more likely to hit their right lung, and vice versa for your right foot, but if you're attacking from behind it flips.
Attacking someone's left arm while standing to their right is nearly impossible, but if you're on the ground and someone is standing over you, it's almost impossible to miss their legs or lower body.

The combat system has a ton of depth to it, and it really rewards strategies that you'd never expect to be modeled in game.
Want to cut someone's head off? Wild kick to lower body followed by a quick sword slash to the head, GG EZ.
Some grand master shield douche blocking all your hits? Check what hand his shield is in, wait for him to attack, dodge to the opposite side, then stab him in the side before he can turn and face you.

Got a necromancer siege, killed everyone (priisoners included) and the tag hasn't gone away.

Is there a way to force another siege, slaughter them, and then maybe the tag will dissappear? Has anyone had this happen, if so how did you fix it? I really want more sieges/trade caravans and I know they will not come while the tag is active.

I had this bug before but killing the prisoners always fixed it. Anyone know whats up?

Probably because it was a colossal pain in the ass to figure out how to represent it. I honestly can't thing of any existing tech that could accurately represent the level of depth the system has.

As for what the system is lacking, I'd like to see ranged combat overhauled so that it's not literally worse than unarmed. Currently there's no way to aim, skill does not increase accuracy, reloading is automatic, takes forever, and locks you in place during the process which is a death sentence usually, the attacks themselves are extremely weak on the rare occasions that they land, and equipping your dwarves and training them with crossbows is ten times harder than making melee squads.
The whole thing needs to be rebuilt from scratch. I'm sure it'll happen eventually though.

They refill themselves gradually, and there are lots of creatures who live inside them that could have started the fire. A fire snake could have climbed out, or a magma crab could be attacking a bird that flew overhead, and there are plenty of other magmadwelling critters too.

Start a war with the elves, then see who wins.

If it could let you add new civs to an existing world, then it would be even better. Bring back dwarves after they go extinct in an otherwise perfect world, or exterminate the elves again and again and again.

Does seem like it must be something coming from another dimension. Since some "evil" biomes are not reanimating biomes, in my headcanon the barriers between the material world and the other planes are much thinner there, which is also why demons prefer to emerge from hell in their slade towers in those biomes.

I could not be more excited about the idea of customizable fantasy/magic-level sliders and alternate dimensions in DF. I'd imagine that at the highest levels, intruding the realms of the gods directly with great and unexpected consequences (after years of dedicated ritual and sacrifice and research) doesn't sound too unlikely.

You know how you can go in and view activities your dorfs are taking part in and see that they're "telling a story about the time when Ral cursed Urist McChucklefuck to assume the form of an ass-like monster every full moon in someyear at Clobbermountain" type of summaries?

Putting in a link so you can follow the progress of your squads and have it displayed isn't too difficult once the squads are actually moving around.

Interestingly it'll also wind up being a foundation for stuff like being a lord of a site and giving out quests to your hearthpersons.

You can also start an adventurer and retire him right away, but that doesn't really change the problem.
I wonder if there are specific obstacles before you can extend "calendar mode" beyond just 2 weeks.
Obviously we won't get a post-fortress worldgen, but letting the calendar run for a year or so while you go to work or read a book would be a nice option.

The economy isn't active atm, 64 bit helps a lot on fps death by stretching out the tail end (so you notice it at like year 300 on a large world, it'll get to 400 a good deal before 32 bit would) but it's not as big of a difference when starting out fresh.

I think something some people are having a hard time accepting is that DF simply is not balanced. It won't ever be. So unless we fundamentally change things, there's only so much that can be done to balance out a tourney. Removing an semblance of individuality in the combatants is not the way to do it.

Sounds like that five years is more like six and a half. I'm pretty sure burrows were added in the big release on April 1 2010, so yeah, there's a lot of new stuff since 40d. Off the top of my head, there's burrows, caverns, forgotten beasts, the military rework, wool and eggs, werecreatures, ghosts, vampires, evil biome weather/reanimation, hauling changes and minecarts/wheelbarrows, necromancers, world activation, thoughts overhaul, taverns, libraries and temples along with artforms, psychological needs, climbing, force transfer, weapon/armor damage and a lot of other stuff.

I stopped playing for a few years right around then too and started again in mid-2014, right around the world activation release (0.40.01) and I have still yet to experience all of the changes firsthand.

I agree with your stuff about df being balanced, but removing individuality by removing attributes is one of the dumber arguments. Combatants are made different by their clothes, their backstory, their meme-tier, not by the stuff that helped sten win, which many of us didn't know was different for minotaurs in the first place.

I've been gaming all of my life, as far as I can tell, and I've been following devs for a part of it.
Sometimes you get this one game that looks really good, and the dev. hooks you up and you buy it, but the game doesnt live out to the hope, or the devs end up being morons, etc.
This has crippled my expectations and trust for indie companies, so I now completely stay away from things like early access games or so.
Toady and Threetoe, with Dwarf Fortress, changed that.
You know, the first months after I discovered the game I literally threw it away because I couldnt assimilate the idea that someone was creating such wonderful thing as this game.
Huge, well enough procedurally genned worlds, complex psychology and simply the best/most complex fighting system I had ever seen, etc.
And on top of that, the dev wasnt being a moron, nor abandoning the game, nor losing up the spirit or the imagination, nope
Toady is and has been from the start the same person with the same huge-as-balls idea, and he hasnt gotten out of his way to make it
And I love and respect that

On top of that, we aren't even at the half of the alpha version so yeah, its gonna be fun

Actually, the lake in pic is artificial. I accidentally struck the aquifer early on, so I decided to make the most of it.

I chose to make it the water source of the wells (as seen in the pic), and also used some pumps to fill in a depression in the landscape, creating the lake in the pic.

I try to keep the setting I portray in areas based on wildlife that dwells there.
I went through a list of spores in a book I have and found neat looking ones from their side of the globe and let them act as the representative creature.
