These are the essentials. After that, the expanded universe starts to get into retarded territory and when 343 takes over direction it kicks that further into high gear, so proceed further with caution.

Note that you can actually skip "The Flood" because it's basically a novelization of CE but it does provide extra explanation for the events of the game while layering additional closure for TFOR and introduction for "First Strike".

Also, while Halo 5 clearly neglects and semi-retcons a great deal of it, I reccomend listening to the Hunt the Truth podcasts if you haven't already. Very well produced material, even if it's now largely irrelevant dye to Halo 5 rewrites and redirection.

Splitscreen usage was extremely common even in the Reach and 4 days.
Most team slayer matches has at least 1 guest in them and big team matches often had more than that.
It's a staple of the Halo Community and what is generally expected of the games by most fans. Dropping it was necessary to reach the technical specifications 343 was prioritizing, but it's clear now that decision hurt more than it helped, especially seeing that 343 had admitted it was a Mistake and has promised splitscreen functionality will return in the next game.

Battlefield has officially now toppled Call of Duty. It's also interesting that Black Ops III continues to outperform the much newer Infinite Warfare, although it should be considered that MWR has likely split the COD franchise population a fair bit. I think if we are just talking about the core multiplayer experience, forget the campaign, forget the maps, forget the story, forget the musical score, forget the difficulty, the enemy variety, and most other things, then you would get a lot of people saying that yes, they think 5 does have a leg up on Reach in that area. But as a whole package, most people just don't feel that way.

I spend a lot of time in a a lot of Halo Online communities and if I had to bundle up all the public opinion into one general one, it would come out that people think at its very multiplayer core Halo 5 shows promise but there's so much fluff and shit around that, that it ends up becoming difficult to really fully enjoy the good stuff at times.

Meanwhile the Reach general opinion would be along the lines of more of a jack of all trades game. Something like "yeah, nothing here is that great, but there's a lot of variety here that's pretty ok or good"

This is a state that the Reach campaign had said it absolutely needed to win. Reach campaigned heavily in this state, and indeed most pendants expected the state to swing towards Reach, but to get the call this early is certainly good news for the Reach camp.

After thinking about it longer than I probably should have I think I've finally put into words why I don't like Halo post Reach. Beforehand, Halo 1, 2, 3, and ODST were all neat shooter games but they were equally part Adventure games. Reach, 4, and 5 stripped away the adventure aspects and just made it more like any old boring shooter game by screwing with the controls and mechanics too much at the cost of an interesting story.
I don't even know why I include 5 in that comparison. That game is so shit and so foreign it doesn't even deserve to be considered in the lineup.
