Well, I understand why they lock the gimmicky hats behind the higher grades.
They are rarer, so you will most likely have to buy more crates to get the item you want. And people love them some super gimmicky hats.
The fact that the banana hat is fucking 20 bucks for a normal version is a testament to that.
I like that its commando.
Its rare enough to mean something to people, but no so rare that it will become unobtainable.
That also says to me that with it being rather low percentage wise and votes wise that someone at valve liked it enough to add it to the case. Especially considering there were like a thousand beanies this year.

Its the best word to describe why some of these hats are popular.
A lot of popular items aren't well designed or a reference to something popular.
The flapjack is a cool jacket that isn't gimmicky. Even if you don't like, or have never even seen akira its still a cool design that doesn't stick out too much from scouts normal character design.
The banana hat is a gimmicky hat in that relies on "lol bananas" to be popular. And moonman magic.
The flamedeer is a festive bdsm mask.
I also just like the word gimmicky. Though I dislike that it can be used to describe so many things.
If you have any alternatives I would welcome them. I would not make a good thesaurus sometimes.

Most items in game are well made.
Just not well designed per se.
I am still a huge supporter or keeping the art style alive instead of making a billion banana hats.
I like to think that most of the items I have made could just be a part of the characters player model had the theme of the game been slightly different.
Though of course that only counts for so much as you go back through my workshop and it just gets shittier and shittier.
At least its easy to tell that I have been getting better as time goes on.

This was back before people figured out how to edit vertex normals, so everything had to clip into the character model instead of blending smoothly.

Vertex normals essentially just tell each individual vertex (the point where edges meets to make a face) how to react to lighting.
The blob on the left has the vertex normals copied from the engineers head, the one on the right does not.
It helps with making models more easily blend into each other as there won't be a super obvious seam where the lighting is different.
