The thread is dedicated to all games about building machines and systems out of blocks, in space or otherwise. Also, all these games are ded. Only ded games may join, otherwise they must have their own thread.
Whether or not a game belongs in /egg/ is a case by case matter, however games that would belong in /svgg/, space voxel games general, are automatically considered /egg/

WebM for retards:
>gitgud.io/nixx/WebMConverter.git

List of currently known and vaguely not dead /egg/ games (this list is not fully inclusive and if you think a game might belong here, feel free to ask):
>Algodoo
>Avorion
>Besiege
>Chode - Children of Ded Earf
>Empyrion - Galactic Survival
>Factorio
>From the Depths
>Homebrew - Vehicle Sandbox
>Infinifactory
>KOHCTPYKTOP: Engineer of the People
>Machinecraft
>REM
>Robocraft
>Robot Arena 2
>Scrap Mechanic
>SHENZEN I/O
>Space Engineers
>SpaceChem
>StarMade

Games that are definitely not /egg/:
>Minecraft
>The general that quite literally cannot be named. The Mexican scam artist one. With the shitposters. Fuck off.
>Hearthstone, found in the hearthstone general, /hsg/, not in this general.

Information about these games, such as where to get them if they're not on steam, trailers, /egg/ conquered/hosted servers, and other shit can be found in this pad:

This may sound stupid as fuck but I can't seem to make warbros' sparky starter ships to appear in game, thought it's because of dev\stable but nope.
I'm looking for a balanced good starter ship, could always build this stuff myself but I like the design

Wow I was terrible at Acs. After rebuilding the explodey turret it now has a layer of armor but exactly the same rate of fire and ammo capacity as before.

Anyone messed with shields on the below-deck turret parts or ammo ejectors? I'm going full safety salamander on this.
>>
>>163412685
I used to have the same problem with my 150mmx6m spam tube mounted onto my fag subs

Just make a layer of heavy armor on the side the gun faces so that it rotates to whatever it points at. Also make sure that pesky fucking HE bugs can't seep through the turret bottom and the hull top by having a tiny 6 way connector linking the top to the bottom with the hull roof spared by heavy armor to guard the internals.
>>
>>163413106
For clarification I meant mount heavy armor on the front of the turret basket, so that when the turret faces someone, even when they pen your hull, theres a layer of heavy armor guarding the ammunition to stop their shell.
>>
Has anyone had any luck designing a shaped charge in spengies for small ship torpedoes meant exclusively to pen through a fuck load of armor? No explosives in cargo crates. Also knowledge on how the game does damage from impacts and explosions would be a god send.

People are still salty as fuck about the dev of FtD changing the resource system to use less types of resources, 'unifying' some aspects of resource management into a generic brick of nonsense. One of many poor design choices. The dev threatened to stop development of ftd if people didn't stop telling him it was an awful idea.

>it's still one of the more interesting games here
While I did enjoy my time with FtD, I think it's a strongly overrated game.
Sure, 137 hours is quite a bit, but at least 10 hours were spent banging my head against the wall, just trying to learn the ass-backwards controls.
Another 10 hours were lost to the story missions which you *need* to complete to unlock certain very useful blocks.
Then, some 20 hours were spent learning how the fuck the campaign is played, and wondering why there's three different buttons to access unit controls (each button of course produces a marginally different menu).
I could've been saved a lot of suffering if someone had just told me to put everything out of play. Seriously, don't put things into play unless you absolutely have to.
The remaining 90 or so hours were spent on 1 (and a half) campaign, most of which was played alt-tabbed because FPS during battles is measured in decimals.

Somewhere in the above, I had about 10 hours of good fun, trying to design functional and effective machines of war.

Personally, I think we just need a multiplayer game like machinecraft with voxel/vehicle collision damage at some point, since as soon as that exists the thread will have something to lean on that people can post about regularly and newfags can join in with easily.
I've noticed that, because each game here has only one or two features in that new people specifically want from these games, they tend to spend ages on the game they picked up first and discussion between the resident playerbases doesn't go very far. If we had one simple, common game that nearly everyone here could play regularly in multiplayer then we wouldn't be so ded all the time.

It was a stupid thing to do; I would never do it; but I understand the impulse.

>>
>>163466510
"DON'T BOTHER"
>>
>>163466510
simple explanation of starmade building:
1) make shitbox miner to get enough resources
2) make shitbox factory to make blocks
3) start laying out your dream ship
4) realise you're gonna need to think about weapon
5) look up the table online because it's not ingame
6) get bogged down with just how many options there are for the weapon and how probable you'll get it wrong and end up with a really big time waste of a peashooter
7) give up and play another game / actually do finish it regardless of if it is crap or not
8) realise no one is generally online when you are, so it's a ghosttown of protected ships
9) give up play something else

of course now AI fleets are in I guess there is something to do, so maybe this is wrong now.

Single player or multiplayer?
SP: don't go fast
MP: don't

Actually, it would work in MP too if you don't ever touch or control your ship, no matter what you see the server will not fuck up positions until a player gets involved (like using a remote or sitting in a cockpit).

If you're in SP you can also get the control module mod and control the hinge with a couple of buttons on your keyboard.

I've always found written tutorials to be mostly garbage, given that they don't give accurate visual examples of procedures, and leave things up for interpretation. A video tutorial is usually done by someone who knows a lot of tricks and shit to make things go faster, a written tutorial is typically done by someone who has never in their entire life had to hold someone's attention for more than six seconds.

>>163464645
Nothing wrong about mining by hand in the early game, before you can afford a proper mining ship.
In all likelihood, you can gather ore quickly enough to keep several refineries busy.
The lemon comes equipped with a collector and a gravity generator, all you need to do is build a quick funnel and adjust the gravity field.

I don't even think it would be safe to mine with, considering the distance between drills.

FtD's UI is undeniably a mess, and a significant detractor from any fun the game can offer.
It is not just that singular anon complaining, you'll see it mentioned frequently.

Stabbing is an effective means of damaging major blood vessels and vital organs - which usually leads to death.
We've been killing each other with stab wounds for god knows how long, and are still going at it.
For the same reason, several modern-day countries have restricted the availability of long knives, hoping to reduce the amount of fatal stabbings.

>>
>>163513393
No loops.
>>
>>163513895
Actually, when it comes to defenses, loops are actually helpful because unused ammo will circulate and remain available to all turrets, instead of piling up in the dead end while turrets "upstream" get torn apart because they ran out of ammo.
>>
>>163515523
Or you can just put an inserter between each turret. You'll have to set down power lines when you inevitably upgrade to lasers anyway.

Not only is he not the real Slim Shady, but the guy telling the story has not mentioned saying anything to the mystery astronaut about Ramirez already being inside. >>
>>163513393
Yes, that's one of few times when loops are reliable option
>>
>>163518264
A loop can be good in extensive burner feeding systems, though it'll only stave off a coal shortage by a few minutes.
>>
>>163518329
But here comes sudden downside as looped coal will be accessible to all boilers, which means shorter span of higher electricity output, opposite to slowly deepening brownout happening with dead-ends fulled with coal
>>
>>163518448
Except a burner doesn't burn any coal unless it needs to in order to get the water to a 100°C.
And a slower brownout won't help out much, because it will affect the inserters loading the rest of the coal as well unless you're doing the coalburner inserters.

The best defense is a good offense. Clear all the enemy bases in your pollution zone, and if you don't think it is cheating, turn on enemy candidate chunks.
To do so, hit F4, click the always tab, scroll to the bottom, and check "show_enemy_candidate_chunks". Green circles are where they are likely to form, to red where they are not likely to form. Things that reduce chances of new bases forming is the existence of spawners and your structures. So, an enemy base will show up as a red circle surrounded by green circles.
Be sure to leave a few random gun turrets randomly placed to alert you to new migrations. Also, check the map every so often.
Flashing green circles is a new base forming, or a base expanding.

>>
>>163543021
yes it's worth it
>>
>>163543021
Empyrion's "galactic survival" title is very fitting because it's not an engineering game, it's a survival crafting game. It has some neat features, actually working 70% of the time being the biggest selling point against SE, but advanced construction is nonexistent, nevermind coding, you can barely even control specific blocks. It's an okay survival crafting game, you can get a dozen or two hours out of it, but that's all.

>>163506673
I've done the tutorials, they're pretty basic, too time consuming for what they say and completely ignore some things.
You could sum them all up in some text and a few highlighted words for the tl;dr, sort of like the help if it was made better.
But anyway, once you realize the basic parts you need for something, picking up the game isn't that hard, when I bought it I thought I wouldn't play it much because it would be too hard for a physician but it turns out it isn't.
The hard part is getting good I suppose.

I doubt it. That engine doesn't make a ton of power, and bigger ones that do lag the game. I think I saw someone build a tiny car with a much simpler engine, but that's not really the kind of thing the game is designed for.

My cousin was just, 'Hey, couldn't we use the steam from heated water guns as a source of power for engine?' and then we spent a month building different designs. It's really a pain getting anything to run well because of how the blocks go together. That engine there has horrible fucking valve timing, but there's not much to do about that other then to make everything bigger so theirs more room for adjustment.

Gunbeds, a large slab of blocks with a fuckton of wheels and guns. Even Orks are more creative than that. And then you have one of the devs responding with :) to those complains

>#rekt tie fighter, crashed fighter and rebel pilots dying and the "stop building flyers" text
Turns out that the devs didn't like that we managed to fly and shit on the playerbase and they couldn't. One of them even said that he hated dogfighting. Anyways, they started "fixing" the game in order to make it easier to shot down flying things. That's why uncle Adolf is crying and the jews on top laughing.

There was some kind of bug that allowed you to have massive amounts of premium money and it took a long way to fix it. By the time it was fixed, everybody and their mother had bought anything, which was nice because premium money was bought with real money.

The only real difference between that and a steam piston engine is that the pistons are just wings and there is no real pressure or exhaust ( since it's an open system ).

It's literally an engine though; it takes the force of the steam coming from the heated water gun block and converts it into mechanical power.

You can build engines using torches and guns to simulate combustion explosions as well, but that's even less accurate, needs invincibility mode on, and works like a hots mess.

Verilog and VHDL are.. Weird. They are languages, but they are not used to program, they describe circuits so you can't use them as you would use a other language (a programming one). And if you are going to use them in FPGAs you are in for a ride because all FPGA makers have different proprietary software that run like ass, have extensive, verbose, cryptic documentation and UI straight out of the 90s.
>>
>>163600768
Also Verilog (slightly) > VHDL. In my classes I had to use Altera and their asinine software called Quartus.
>>
>>163600768
That seems more of a problem of FPGAs makers than Verilog/VHDL being bad themselves.

(Some old version of VHDL had like 10 pages worth of stuff to explain "not") They aren't serial yada yada yada. But yes the FPGA guys are shit, like ultra shit. That's why nobody is caring for FPGAs anymore and just go lol arduino :^). what's the best game for building a v-22 osprey?
>>
>>163598496
I don't think any of the games here are gonna teach you how the world works.
That being said, I believe they can be valuable as a tool to understand how design theory and optimization methods can be applied.
Further, they're all a good excuse to pick learn how to use other tools, such as Excel - I have my own spreadsheets for Factorio, Spergies, Skubmade and Gimbal.

>>163600585
As someone unfamiliar with labview, how does it apply to Factorio?
>>
>>163601443

>>
>>163601762
Negatory.
Unless LUA is used, the control will be absolute ass. You also can't do a three blade rotor without some serious fuckery.
>>
>>163601984
would the rotating nacelles even be possible?
>>
>>163602124
Yes, but wonky as shit while at it, and the nested dedicated rotors probably will fuck up.
Didn't Nick decide to remove the ability of putting dedicated helis on rotors?
>>
>>163601596
>As someone unfamiliar with labview, how does it apply to Factorio?
If you know how to make logical gates out of anything you can then use labview to make your scheme of gates and choose to optimize them.
For example you could build a system with tons of ands, ors, xors, etc. or with nands and nors, and then chose to optimize them, which will eliminate redundant paths.
>>
>>163602198
You can make it work but only if you are willing to jet stabilize. I built a test skeleton a while back and getting it to fly was stupid.

There is if there the game ends up being gunbed vs gunbed because any other alternative (fliers, gunchairs, killsats, sanic tonks, etc.) have been nerfed to oblivion because "muh toddler playerbase" can't stop getting destroyed by more skilled players

It's like taking a rock-scissors-paper game, but then you remove scissors because people who pick up paper get destroyed.

It can also dodge flak fire from most players by doing crazy loops and spins and turns, making people actually give up on trying to flak me, or they fire their flak at me for so long they get distracted and my team on the ground steamrolls over them because they get pissed off they cant hit this plane and keep trying.

Its also 2000CPU and tanky as fuck.

So I finally got a sun that doesn't look too much like trash in REM. Unity's sun system relies on you having a definite ground and use a procedural skybox, which only has colors. This particular beauty is made with a directional light, a sunshaft script, a halo and a lensflare game object.

Zero, appreciably. Shadows can be turned off completely without sacrificing the lighting of the scene or the texture quality in the start up settings with the "Medium Good" option. Its exactly the same, except no shadows. Still looks alright.

The effects themselves are merely smoke and mirrors with sprites and light smearing. Maybe 1fps hit on a really bad system, but the game is running at a fine 60 when the guns are behaving regardless. It can actually drop down to 20fps without incurring clang or any other problems, provided you have two 1000 part ships with twelve guns apiece running on a toaster, because the physics no longer run on frames, but delta time, which doesn't care at what speed the game is functioning at.

TL;DR
No.

It's a D52 Dual Trace Oscilloscope from the 60's. Should be pretty handy for electronics projects. Understandable why he'd said be careful since it'll have an early CRT and also runs on valve technology. Touching the ray tube would be a pretty quick way to an early grave.

Also got a PM5509 Pattern Generator with it. Not sure what I can really do with this as these are really for testing old CRT TV's far as I'm aware. Either it has some function generator capabilities or he got mixed up and thought that's what he'd bought. I'll check it in more detail tomorrow.

I had some fun in it, but theres a big wipe coming soon in preparation for open beta. And since the game is grindy as fuck, theres no point grinding for stuff thats going to be gone in a month.

Once it goes open beta Ill start playing it again, and we can make an /egg/ clan.

The game is also still imbalanced as fuck, with certain guns being worthless, and other guns being OP as shit. Lunatics armor is OP as fuck since it lets damage pass through one isde of the vehicle and out the other, and its lightweight. So people just build solid bricks of lunatic armor, and shove 12 wheels on it and they can go extremely fast, and take almost no damage from enemys. Its broken as hell, and still needs to be fixed badly.

This is my drone, it isn't very useful against anything with half decent lasers. Not because the drone couldn't beat them at a lower cost than the ship they're fighting, but because that many of these would crash the game. I'm currently waiting on an update that'll reduce the rtg minimum fuel size or add batteries to reduce the cost and weight, also gotta lower the gun loader power to about 1 watt because that loader is most of the weight.

And it isn't very effective, considering it just blows itself apart.
I should just make it all cheap nuke launchers and add some thrusters to allow it to roll.
All of my weapons (including the lasers) depend on just spamming as many nukes as physically possible, because if I'm going to ruin someone's day somewhere, sometime, I might as well ruin it well.
>>
>>163489316
Could it be possible to have both?
Still have the weapon building stuff but only the premade designs are "Arena legal".

So it's kinda like making racing cars, in Formula 1 you have to adhere to certain rules in the build, outside that? You can strap a SRB on the back and race with your friends on the straightest piece of road you can find
>>
>>163700478
Replace that RTG with a small reactor, you can bring the outlet temperature way up and use less radiators, plus the reactor itself costs a lot less.

I'd at least say it needs stuff like customizable gyroscopes and PID systems for balance, as well as full leg physics.

Calm your tits dude, or I'll just associate the game with people like you whenever it gets mentioned (which is already common, as people usually only talk about how related/unrelated it is to the general and rarely even mention any reason to play it in the first place).

>>163703498
Weight distribution/leg strength ratios would be pretty cool too, especially if combined with damage taken (i.e. leg takes too many hits = not enough structural support left to hold it up)
>>
>>163703639

Is it like rust? I've never played rust but it doesn't strike me as being anything like it from what I've seen of it.

As for casualization, I wouldn't say Space Engineers is a casual game but everybody I've bumped into on it is basically a gmod tier kid who doesn't leave you alone and is constantly HEY LOOK AT MY SHIP. LOOK AT MY SHIP.

>explore

They're all a very concrete genre of game but they don't really have their own generals.
Which means they could be threat to /egg/

factorio
>>
>>163704072

I suppose. Exploration on it is quite enjoyable, looking for crashed relics and stuff. I've found remains of long dead huge creatures, and also found what looked like Sputnik buried hundreds of metres under the moon's surface. It's also super comfy and quite pretty, but yeah I can understand how it can turn some people away. As far as that style of game goes though, I'd like to say it's done really well and is generally enjoyable.
>>
>>163704176
Do you actually engineer things though, or do materials magically turn into tools/vehicles/base sections when put into a crafting area?
>>
>>163704314

You have to collect resourced, sometimes refine them before they can be made into things. I suppose there's a tiny bit of engineering with regards to resource management, making sure your life support can reach the right places and making your vehicles suit purpose, but it isn't a full on bonafide engineering game no.
>>
>>163704389
I'm sorry to say it buddy, but this definitely sounds more like a rustlike than an /egg/ game.
If it gets enough players interested then you could try your own general, which might not be too hard since it's just come out (which really is the best time to start up generals, since if the game's good enough for one then people will stay and become regulars).

Faction that praises gommunism, hates oxygen and drills into moons and mars with giant clang vehicle which then acts as their base and send their rusty cyka fleets at you
Faction that deploys solar powered gravgun stations that would snipe the shit out of you
Faction that would hijack your property with grinder drones and steal your shit just like you do with cargo ships

20161227024750_1.jpg

I have two questions.
First: why does the turret on the back shoot the turret on the front even if there's a failsafe?
Does it not check for other turrets but only for the main ship?
I've seen there's a extra constrain limit on the turret axis but I want it to shoot forward if there's space (generally I'm far away enough that the turrets aim up to avoid hitting each other).

Second: there are torpedoes launcher on both sides, each side connected to a controller. How do I prevent a side to shoot if the target is obviously on the other side?
I tried changing the required angle before fire to a smaller value (20 instead of 45) but it didn't change anything, they just keep firing if the target is in range of detectors.

Sorry for being a physician, it's my first time.

Hard to git gud when I can't play. Anytime any voxel (planet or asteroid) is rendered, no matter how small said voxel is, I get a CTD. But it only started doing this immediately after planets were introduced.

And lemme tell ya, you can only play creative in an empty world for so long before it loses its charm.
>>
>>163798161
I'm pretty sure that failsafes don't take subobjects into consideration, so it doesn't hold fire when things on turrets and spin blocks are in the way

Firing constraints on rear-facing turrets are weird. I seem to recall something about having constraints on the turret block and the weapon blocks, and the constraints on the weapon blocks need to be reversed. Or something.

Regarding the torpedo launchers, just do firing constraints.
>>
>>163792504
>Are any of the games to be avoided?
Hullo!
>>
>>163798161
You can add a second axis constraint so that the second turret is only able to shoot over the first turret (and nothing within close range), or have it able to target everything but not fire forward.
Your ship should be broadsiding when it's engaging enemies anyway I would assume, so not firing forward shouldn't be a big deal. Also most ship fights take place at a distance, so not firing at nearby targets with your second turret shouldn't be an issue. I'd dedicate the second turret to AA duties so that the enemy will always be above your firing angle.
Set the torpedoes to fire from separate AIs with isolated detection
