Ok, i need to get rid of kids from my fort ( i have 100 dorfs and 35 of them are kids ... ) to improve fps.
How do i lure them into my drowning chamber ?
Burrows dont work, i cant draft them into military and i cant think of any other way to get them there.

Do they switch their armour for better quality ones and just dump their old ones on the ground ?

I just captured a goblin..

What should i do with him /dfg ??

My options include :
A - build a 15 z level high tower and toss him to splatter on the main courtyard of my fort
B - use already existing 13 z level shafy and simply dump him there in the caverns
C - use him as a training fooder for my soldiers
D - construct some elaborate room filled with traps and dump him there

What should i choose /dfg

Something grand and painfull and slow ... Like singular disk trap corridor that will slowly remove his limbs as he tries to escape ..

Just another good day of work. There are some shit janitors and mods out there, either they are corrupt and evil or simply ignore shitposts but once in a while there are silent guardians that protect our indigenous memes. Like the mod on /lit/ that made ayn rand a baneable offense.
>>
>>163373852
I only really self-insert as the adventurer in av mode. I just see myself as an observer in fort mode. Mostly because I only see fort mode as a means to shake the world up before going back to playing my adventurers. I just make a mediocre fort and make it look realistic and practical, wait as long as I can, and then retire it and go back to adventuring.

If you were just an observer, surely you wouldn't guide them or make them do anything? You have to be something, otherwise they would notice how their thoughts and activities are guided.

No dwarf hollows out a room on their own. You do that. They follow your orders. Observer wouldn't do anything and would only watch as your caravan died in a few days on the surface.

If you generate a pocket world with normal amount of civs, you'll never get all races.

Just make a larger world, or make a world with more civs.

Oh well I guess if you put it that way then I'd most likely consider my actions to be the result of the important dwarves getting together and having a think on what actions should be taken next.

If you just want a place for offtopic discussion then there's no need to post the discord in the general. If your discussion would be on topic then there's no need to remove from the general that we all came to on purpose for on topic discussion.

voice discussion, instant chat abilities for more in-depth discussions, allows an outlet for people to sperg out their off topic shit, socializing. it's healthy because people who usually come in, lurk and leave might stick around longer and maybe even learn how to play the game, the only two things it could realistically do are either nothing or cause community growth.

voice discussion makes it easier for the discussion to slip into politics or otherwise controversial topics. this will ultimately lead to a polarisation where different camps form in the different media. /dfg/ will be split in two, and both parts will turn into political echo chambers.

So basically, the (unanonymous, I presume) discord users are an entire different class, the party elite, and in order to have any influence on the "development" of the general you have to join the discord group, as well? It sounds like a shitty decision.

A general isn't something to be "gardened" in the first place. It appears and develops spontaneously and organically. When you try to seize control of it, you ruin it.

>>
>>163392740
My point was that everyone has seen what negative effects a discord can have on a general, and no one (apart from you) seems to want to risk that. Take a hint, friendo.
>>
>>163391103
>instant chat abilities for more in-depth discussions
Instant discussion isn't more in-depth. It favors concision and summary to maintain a conversational flow, and encourages off-the-cuff responses. The written word allows nuanced explanation, detail, and inline citation (i.e. wiki links, quotes, etc), and is a much more suitable format for discussion of game mechanics. DF isn't a game that lends itself to conversational teaching, which is why the wiki is such an important tool and why people often answer questions here with walls of text.

>sperg out their off topic shit
Plenty of other places for that.

>socializing
That's literally what we're doing right now. We chose this format for socializing.

>the only two things it could do realistically are nothing or cause community growth
Or it could remove some game discussion from /dfg/, which is directly harmful to /dfg/ and to those who came here for game discussion. If your discord is successful it will definitely take at least some game discussion elsewhere. This general is already slow, I don't see how you imagine removing people from it would be helpful.
>>
this is some very hypocritical behavior, look at the arguments you guys are making about this hypothetical "divide", and then look at who is the one creating the divide. what it boils down to is "you can't do that because I'll choose to demonstrate animosity and be upset". okay? if you want to be, I guess. As someone who took part in a fresh general for over a year.

For about 3 to 4 months the general was great. It was on point and a few silly avatarfags. Suddenly Discord was introduced. It got spammed everywhere and the ones who made it were insanely defensive about it just like anon here.

At first it was only a handful of people. At times you'd see the general just worsen and no one really knew why. Name dropping became even more cancerous and the thread was garbage. Dozens of "t. NAME" of literally who.

Suddenly screenshots from the discord pages emerged. They purposefully shat on the general, as a group, to make it worse for us so they could then come back with "well this place is shit, you should just join our discord instead". It was fucking awful.

Then fast forward a few months and the general was half dead. Around same amount of posters below, but hardly any posting going on. People were instead using Discord and the general was just their dumping ground. Whenever they had an argument they wouldn't argue with each other, they would bring it to the general instead because they needed the anonymity. Of course the ones who weren't in the Discord were all confused who or what was talking or what about.

The ones who left for Discord pretty much stopped coming to the general, the one that they themselves ruined actively for others. They caused the problem and served themselves as the solution, only to abandon the general first hand.

All in all, no matter how hard you try to claim Discord somehow enhances a general you're wrong. It serves to worsen it and that usually is the original creators goal. They want control over anons, because here they are powerless and get called out.
>>
>>163395634
Military has always been the easiest and most OP solution to sieges. If you were playing 34.11 and didn't know how to properly set up your training then I can see how you may have come to those erroneous conclusions about their danger, but invasions have never been very dangerous except to relatively new players. In any case, no arcane workarounds are needed to get your military to train properly now. If you get some started in the first couple seasons you'll have legends ready to go before you ever see a goblin.
>>
>>163395849
>No, 100% of my tiles surrounding the site edge are water.
In that case you're definitely experiencing a bug, and should report it. There's an old (still unresolved last I saw) bug about wildlife spawning midmap, and your issue is probably related.
>>
>>163396258
you're argument is based entirely on an arbitrary judgement of my character, which I doubt you are very familiar with. don't worry about it, I wouldn't do anything to harm this general that I've been posting in on and off for years, and I'm not the whiny underaged power-seeking admin-type some of you are trying to make me out to be. I'm very aware of the archetype, and aware of the kind of discord server you are describing, and the reason I'm making one right now is literally because one will inevitably be made as the game rises in popularity over the next couple of years and I'd rather it wasn't some circlejerk kid who had the ban button.

some people want to make friends and don't have other outlets to do so, some people like that are in this general, and I want to meet them. not everyone is like that, of course. there doesn't have to be any animosity between these kinds of people, so why create some?

I don't know the version. It was the one where he'd just overhauled military training and it didn't work - squaddies would literally stand around "observing" each other and that was all, so you *needed* a danger room, but then it was just ridiculously OP.

I remember. That's what I was getting on about regarding the workaround that's no longer necessary. Watching demonstrations is a normal part of training. Along with individual drills it's all green recruits will do. Eventually they start sparring and their skill level explodes. There aren't many entity_default changes that can take effect midgame. I don't know whether that's one that can, but I'm doubtful. You could try regenning your world from seed with the change in the main raws to see if it helps. If you haven't already, set your strict popcap to 7 (or 1, in case of deaths). In theory it's supposed to prevent even the first 2 migrant waves, but I've never tried it. If you're planning to have kids and do a starting 7 only generational fort that won't work, and you might have to accept those first few magical teleporting migrants. But hey, free wizards, right?

Also, have you reported it and uploaded your save? The mere presence of merchants/more than 7 dwarves on your map should be enough to to confirm the bug. A bug like this could potentially factor in to the myth arc's new map generation features, and you have probably the ideal embark for isolating it.
>>
>>163400053
I really just don't want external influences effecting my fortress at all. Having their crap here is a frustration, even just to dump it.

Oh well, the oceans had no fish in them anyways... I just now need to find another whole island to fully encompass with an embark. Tears.

Idiots that expected the performance to increase massively, magically making 400-creature forts on 8x8 embarks playable even in decades old fortresses.

Some, possibly even the same people expect a "multicore"-rewrite to equally magically remove any performance issues DF has like some sort of programming panacea.

There is a practice aspect with most things, but there are things like an artistic style and technique which someone either develops or merely tries to emulate. I can look at a picture and copy it down remarkably well, but it isn't art. I've tried more complex figures, studied musculature and anatomy, light, shading, different media-appropriate methods, but the absolute peak of my own artwork might pass as a background character in something honestAnon whipped up with paint and a mouse in a few minutes.

I don't want to discourage anyone who enjoys drawing, but often times a big part of going about it the right way is having a certain aesthetic sense AND the ability to translate it from your head through your hands to a screen or canvas or other format.

I mean, shit, I spent months tweaking and finessing and poking at my vorpal tilesets until I had them looking right to me, then dePlatino comes along and whips up what amounts to a //tech demo// and illuminates everything wrong with my set so clearly I can't go back at all, and only being too accustomed to the clipped corner walls prevents me from just adding my shaded tiles and calling it a day.

A multithreaded rewrite or 64 bit? Why should a more multithreaded DF make it freeze less often? What makes it freeze in the first place?
>>
>>163442183
>Some, possibly even the same people expect a "multicore"-rewrite to equally magically remove any performance issues DF has like some sort of programming panacea.>>

>adding 200-300 % of computing power available will do nothing guyz ...

I know its not that easy but to say that multicore wont do anything is retarded.
>>
>>163443304
>adding 200-300 % of computing power available will do nothing guyz ...
The problem is that these different threads (temperature, pathfinding, separate pathfinding threads, fluid calculations, etc) all need to be in sync with each other - if the temperature is finished calculating, it still needs to wait for the pathfinding, all the item locations, and so on to finish too, so there's a diminishing benefit from having it on a separate thread.

Undoubtedly there will be performance increases. But adding another core (or two) will not translate to a 200% (or 300% respectively) increase in perfomance. More likely some bottlenecks will be removed and consequently performance will somewhat improve _in specific cases_ -- similarly to 64bit.

While 64bit was a matter of changing a compiler flag and getting rid of a few problems, adding more multithreading will be a substantial, tedious and long rewrite, which will possibly introduce a whole range of new bugs, while still only improving the performance slightly.
Looking at the biggest rewrites in the past (world activation, 2D>3D) I don't think it can be done in a shorter timespan than three years.
You're looking at 3 years without a release for a questionable increase in performance. I don't think that's worth it.
>>
>>163443824
Maybe Toady will have to do it eventually.
>>
>>163443879
That's an entirely different question. And I can see it happen. Though I think DF is already a spaghetti mess of code, and there's a lot more performance that can be gained with simple improvements.
>>
>>163443304
If the programming doesn't properly delegate cycles for calculations which can be threaded it won't do shit.

In some cases even if it does split the work up into multiple threads well it might not matter much if you're trying to update something which depends on other more demanding calculations.

The temperature of the air tiles I was flying through while jumping off of buildings into a well may be much easier to calculate than the effects of the fluid sloshing around in the well, the tissue deformation of my foes, and their mental states... but the important part of the calculation isn't the air temperature so it doesn't matter.

Speeding up pathfinding by moving it to a different thread would help by freeing resources for other calculations, but you still need certain things to be done at the same time or it all stops behaving in a coherent fashion.

Sure, multi-threading means the game can keep updating the position and temperature of the item a dwarf is going to grab at a faster rate, but you still have to account for the dwarf actually working out the path and traversing it at dwarfspeed.

Oh what the fuck, I thought I had discovered some amazing new item tag because I got the idea to see if you could change the values in the scroll/rollers setup to make multipart weapons, right?

[DEFAULT_IMPROVEMENT:SPECIFIC:ROLLERS:HARD_MAT]

I put HANDLE in instead of ROLLERS and it worked fine, so I assumed you could do this elsewhere, put PADDING:SOFT_MAT on armor, STRAPS:LEATHER_MAT on a shield, really opening up a lot of decoration options... but apparently I just sorta accidentally stumbled on a pre-existing feature?

I checked a save I have with vanilla raws and sure enough if you go into an itemimprovement_itemspecificst entry under gm-editor it lists -1 (nil), 0 (HANDLE), 1 (ROLLERS) but nothing else, even when I added more in so there should be like 2 (STRAPS), 3 (PADDING), and so forth.

Do you guys put hard limits on the civ numbers for worlds you generate? For example, I usually configure it like this on a smaller island/region:

Alright so I made a dangerous pocket world in the hopes of getting some action.

I embarked next to two towers. TWO!

The first winter, I got an invasion for a few seconds and then they all ran off.

Then, the following winter, I get a notification: "Intruders! Drive them away!" It spawned a necromancer by himself in the middle of my map, and then he ran off.

It just happened again; are these guys ever going to try my defenses? Or are they going to keep running off?

>Ohhh, I think you can just keep redesignating the digging/smoothing/whatever jobs as long as it's below 3/7 they'll start/cancel and you can get them to finish it bit by bit can't you?
Thing is those spaces shouldn't produce water anymore, and I don't know what I'm doing wrong. It fucks the entire project.
>>
>>163452113
>Do you guys put hard limits on the civ numbers for worlds you generate?
Its even possible ? All i see is general number of civs...
>>
>>163456061
Go to raw and edit the civ files, there's a variable called [MAX_STARTING_CIV_NUMBER:n] which places a hard limit on the amount of civs a species can have. They are by default set to 100 but you can change them to anything you like.

In addition, Advanced World Generation allows you to set the limit of civs in general that can be in a world.

Combine these two and there you go.

Isn't the water coming from the sides?

The double slit works by pulling it out from one side and draining it into the aquifer fast enough that you can get your lil dudes to slog around down there and smooth the walls up or build new ones in sand.

>>163456257
Wasn't there also some weird shit where that, the max pop, and the max site pop numbers interacted to give the actual cap on large sites, or was that ever scienced out?

I remember looking at it a long time ago before I noticed it was easier to just remove trolls or beak dogs and the "likes_site:dark_fortress" to keep the total populations down some, because 10k goblins+10k beak dogs+10k trolls is too fucking much.

>>
>>163457351
Does smoothing the wall stop it from creating water?
also the problem at hand is that the earlier level of the aquifer got drained out correctly, but this second level doesn't get drained. What I mean is after I dug below the aquifer, hitting another aquifer level, and then pumping the upper aquifer level out, it stopped producing water, it's not the case this time for some reason.
>>
I'm bored guys, i need some advice in to how to spice this game up.

All I want is a conflict-prone experience; I created a hellish pocket world and embarked near two towers and a goblin civ I am at war with and so far all thats happened is >>163455759

Where they appear on the map and then run off.
No night creatures so far, no giants, no dragons, no nothing. Once you figure out the basic gameplay, I can build all of the megaprojects I want but i need toys t play with dang it.

Are mods the thing I'm looking for? Should I try masterwork? It just seems to go too far in the other direction of just adding too much shit; I dont need mages or crazy races, I just want vanilla dwarf fort with a much higher invasion chance by night creatures or goblins.
>>
>>163455759
The necromancer didn't spawn in the middle of your map, they arrive stealthed. You got the announcement wherever it was discovered. He will have been looking for something to reanimate, but you caught him too quickly.
The first, where they run away immediately, is a bug. It should've been a proper siege. If you got it once you're likely to get it again on that embark.

Constructing campsites, playing music, dancing, singing, poetry, telling stories, joining musical troupes, functioning hearthperson quests, people recognize that you're bodyslamming the bandit that tried to rob them and thank you for it instead of freaking out at you beating up some goblin, armor can be damaged, joints can be damaged by blows to connecting limbs, bandits and soldiers in general spawn in full armor properly now rather than just head+body+clothing, the storytelling interface alone basically lets you check a condensed version of legends mode for anything your character has heard/read/seen/done, various crafting options were added in vanilla, stuff like carving intricate as shit figurines depicting you striking down a dragon using the bones of that dragon, or taking all those rocks you knap for skillups and grabbing a branch from a tree to make a basic stone axe to chop trees down with (it'll break if you bash anything with it too hard), reading and writing in libraries or just books you find on the ground, taverns have soldiers to recruit, performers to watch, and a tavern keeper who will serve booze and rent a room (for free if you're famous enough) but most importantly is almost always ridiculously well informed (or will mention someone probably in the tavern who is), new fame types and titles like legendary dancer, known protector of the weak, something of a hunter, in addition to the original hero progression.

I don't know then. if the enemy is downed though than making the attack a heavy one helps decapitate/cleave. High Strength also isn't that good and some larger creatures will just shrug off your attacks if you don't have superhuman strength or a really sharp material. Adamanatine weapons sever body parts like butter even with like adequate/competent skill. I would recommend finding and raiding a vault and stealing a divine metal sword.

Nope, only towns have those. Dwarven fortresses have depot which essentially work like shops(talk to the broker to trade).

However, the mead halls in the hamlets are full of free stuff, so you can just loot one of those.

I miasa feel like there is tunnels in this aree but I'm gonna guess what you mean.

You want to know how to make a single shaft or chute down 20 z-levels?

Did an up-down stair and go designate the top stair to be removed, keep doing this otherwise they'll remove the one under them and fall all the way down.

You could also try to get a dwarf to channel the square underneath them and keep doing it each time they fall.
>>
>>163481049
This is excellent.
>>
>>163489017
>You could also try to get a dwarf to channel the square underneath them and keep doing it each time they fall.
Climbing broke this method. Dwarves will catch themselves when they fall and climb out of the hole instead of deeper into it. Then no one will climb in to continue digging because climbing isn't considered in normal pathing.

change their labors with v - p - l, they'll drop their picks. make a stockpile for all picks other than artifact quality, and dwarves will put all the picks in your fort in that stockpile. forbid that stockpile. put the labors back on, they will have no other option but to grab the artifact picks.

This one was a fort that I had to make since I saw the world-gen posted in the bay12 cookbook thread with the tagline "25 z river cliff" or something along those lines.

Ended up diverting part of the river around a channel to keep the flow even through both of the feeds, figured I was smart cause I dug up underneath and then dropped a wall on the spot to cave-it in, had the bridges ready, let the river fill it up and pressurize it... was getting ready to set up the chests and tables and shit around the wells... pull the lever so dorfs can use them in the meantime, WOOSH, water shooting up out of both wells.
>>

yeah I love maps with cliffs and rivers up top, though it's not the easiest to find good embarks like that. my current embark is like that(pic related) but it's sortof redundant because of the aquifer sitting on top of the mountain somehow. next to it is a rough sketch of the most aesthetic map I ever played on, I should've saved it.

you can utilize an entire river anywhere on the map using only digging by building a funneling borrow system, usually what I do because it's fast. really crude drawing but sortof demonstrated what I'm talking about. I can fill up a 80ish tile cistern almost instantly like this.
>>
>>163498650

yeah the drawing is extremely crude, this might make what I'm talking about a little more clear. channeling on either side of the river in a strip leading down to a chamber where it can recollect itself before falling into a smaller pipe where the water pressure remains high.

also I must point out that you absolutely can dig underneath a river, there's nothing stopping you unless you're sentimental about your miners.

I think I've figured out exactly what a dwarf in a strange mood feels like. I happened upon a song that sounded really familiar, and which reminded me of a song that I *think* I heard a long time ago that sounded really similar, but I've searched everything I can find that I thought was even tangentially related to the memory of that old song, and I cannot for the life of me find it. It's a feeling of a memory not quite entirely formed, or not formed enough to give a satisfying result. Like a "tip of the tongue" sensation, but I feel like this song that I thought I heard never actually existed and I feel compelled to create it and it's REALLY fucking frustrating.

I know why those dwarves go mad. Imagine having a creation "on the tip of your tongue" every day for a month straight.

So, the song I happened upon that spurred this was this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWD7k6TrJ-g

The best way to describe the song that's been repeating in my head for a week is the above mixed with this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qXmxVySMzw

The tangentially related memory, where I *thought* I heard it was on the Need for Speed Undercover soundtrack. At least, that's what springs to mind when I try to think of the song.

And like I said, I'm not even convinced the song exists at this point, which is why I'm tempted to just legally download some music software and mix the two for my own satisfaction.
>>
>>163504804
this would be my best guess based on combining the sounds of those two songs, though I seriously doubt it's this, might as well try.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIkfFG84uMs

this also comes to mind instantly based on your first track, but doesn't sound much at all like the second.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMexarlJu6k
>>
>>163505194
Sadly, neither of them. I do appreciate the effort, though, and I dig both of those so might do some more looking into those artists. If it helps any, it's the sort of "tick tock" portion of the first song that clicks off something really hard in my head. And like I said, it could very well be that it's just a piece of music that just doesn't exist. When I think of the piece of music, it's like the first 25 or 30 seconds of the first song and then picking up in pace and tone rapidly kind of into the second.

>>
>>163508109
>>163509646

At a certain point there's diminishing returns to new content as it just gets added to the corners of the game. Hopefully the game will have enough substance someday that every fortress feels completely different because of how the player's actions and the RNG affect things. Once the game gets to this point, I would hope that Toad focuses on making the game function more smoothly instead of adding irrelevant features.

Right now I think Toad still has interesting ideas of what to add. I just wish the game was a little more stable and polished, because I really like what we already have.

The first part was how to become a legendary hero: kill a dragon, or roc, or hydra, titans can push you up there too, or bathe in the blood of a horde of semimegabeasts.

The second part was in response to the question about it seeming like dwarves don't marry/take lovers anymore, finding one that will date x but not marry x or y isn't unusual, nor is date x/marry y, and when you combine those with the ~10 year age range it can get tricky to set up couples.

Filter them into viable couples, give em overlapping work/play/rest areas, let em socialize, have them in a squad and spar, etc.

It's harder to get the viable pairs in the first place, then you just gotta set em off in a little love nest and wait.

Your df folder will have other folders in it, save tilesets into df/data/art.

Then look in df/data/init for the init.txt file, scroll down to the lines that say [FONT:cursesblah.png] and replace the cursesblah part with the filename you saved the tilesets as is df/data/art and they should just work.

I like to just remove a bracket so I can swap them around easily.

FONT:curses_640x300.png]
FONT:curses_24x24.png]
[FONT:vector_square_16x24.png]
^- that'll ignore the ones without a leading bracket.

If you want to fullscreen or use graphics, copy the filename.png] part over to the [FULLFONT: and [GRAPHICS_FONT: and [GRAPHICS_FULLFONT: lines, save the init.txt and you're ready to go.

Having dwarves work/train together won't create relationships. Not even friendships. It has to be socializing, and maybe some of the other idle-work activities. Otherwise the best you get is a handful of acquaintances from dwarves accidentally getting friendly when they complete tasks around the same time.

Pick a locally important human demigod.

Put at least one point in swimming and maybe reading too.

Scour the keep/mead hall you start out in for iron weapons and armor. Get good at searching containers and quickly parsing for the good stuff.

Ask at least two other fighters to join you in your adventure.

Ask the lord if he has any duties for you.

Get directions to where said duties are.

Go there, fight, try not to die.

The world is your oyster/coffin.

Yup, 1 swim/climb/read.

Also, from the work testanon did and my own spamtesting it looks like some of my info at least was a bit off.

Str and End are king, Agi and Tou are both important but Tou can be made up with armor, and Agi is only REALLY gonna matter if you're gonna end up a necro or vamp or something else that can sprint all the time.

Focus makes you like super spergy "omg lookitdabird" when autoattacking, it wouldn't do the same when aiming attacks, but outside of some skills I don't see much reason to dump much there.

Willpower keeps you from blacking out when your hand gets kicked off by a stray shot to your thumb.

Intuition helps you identify attacks as they come in a bit earlier, but observer takes up most of the slack there.

Memory is way underestimated for adventurers though, being able to see the memory image of a sewer/catacomb/cave is a lifesaver sometimes, but elves and gobs can both dump it since they're 5000 min/max.

Spatial has skill boosts but Kinesthetic seems more combat relevant and hits many of the same skills.

Social/Empathy were important when fame was wonkier and you couldn't recruit performers, now you can dance your way into a horde of 20 oddly-well-armed "entertainers" or make use of beating up some bandits to score a few followers early on.

Needs, though, I see people going around with a bunch of unfulfilled needs full time like it's a. no big deal, and b. how it has to be.

You can zero out all needs if you try, but you get a significant accuracy/skill success boost from being Focused! so you want SOME needs.
>>

>>
>>163534328
>>163535774
...just make sure you don't head out with eat good meal/be with friends/family/romance needs because short of dfhack fuckery you flat out can not fulfill them ever.

Hear eloquence/make merry/admire art/practice skill/uphold tradition can all be fulfilled by performing a single line of poetry if your civ has them, but most civs have couplets or if nothing else triplets you can bust out quickly to get your focus back up.

See great beast is fulfilled by seeing histfigs apparently, wander/see animal are generally pretty easy to do as well.

Acquire shit/be extravagant/cause trouble are hardmode, you can never get them to a maintenance level, always need more shit, or worse you instantly convince everyone when trying to argue and have to find someone asleep to glitch-argue with yourself to "cause trouble" eventually.

Being a faithful or ardent follower of a god you can pray to (literally just say hi to them) is an easy need, and unless you go full on pacifist you're gonna need alcohol later from all the death you see, I like to fill a quiver with booze.

1 level will give you at least something of a chance to catch a wall when falling, and I like to do a lot of stupid shit. If you're not prone to just running and jumping off the side of buildings, mountains, trees, etc then you can just skill it up from 0 at your leisure.

Yeah, set intemperence all the way to minimum so you have no food/booze need, go kill about 10 sapients and you'll generally have a need for alcohol pop up. I run pretty a constant idlers:0. My military trains all the time. After 15+ years the highest relationships that have formed between dwarves are "friendly terms"; literally every other relationship I can find between dwarves is familial. Some of my military dwarves who have trained together for over a decade don't even know each other. Most of my animal trainers have a few friendships with animals, and one has a grudge against a rutherer child.
By contrast, my last fort had a dedicated leisure class, and nearly all of them became friends. No lovers, though. There's a reason for the honeymoon suite setup to force dwarves to socialize. It's the only way to reliably force them to form relationships.

quote from toady:

"Our eventual goal is to have the player's role be the embodiment of positions of power within the fortress, performing actions in their official capacity, to the point that in an ideal world each command you give would be linked to some noble, official or commander. I don't think coaxing is the way I'm thinking of it though, as with a game like Majesty which somebody brought up, because your orders would also carry the weight of being assumed to be for survival for the most part, not as bounties or a similar system. Once your fortress is larger, you might have to work a little harder to keep people around, but your dwarves in the first year would be more like crew taking orders from the captain of a ship out to sea or something, where you'd have difficulty getting them to do what you want only if you've totally flopped and they are ready to defy the expedition leader."

yes, you are at a time the will of the expedition leader. idk why that "wouldn't make any sense".

Oh it is and its one of the major flaws of vanilla DF. ESPECIALLY making some quick temp fixes ( for example quick labour activation to build shit faster ).

>Never had that one so im not even sure what it does.
Masterwork items leaving the map, even if because they were sold to traders, would upset their creators
>>
>>163545757
it's where your dwarves flip out if their masterwork shit is traded off. on top of that, there were a lot of fixes on combat, joint damage and armor removal are game changing features.

if you don't want to have to change a bunch of dwarf labors when building something, don't turn construction off for them in the first place. I can't think of many scenarios where I have to change labors for more than a couple of dwarves.

it's really simple. turn off migrant labors, v -> g to check their skills as they walk on to the map, then p -> l to change them to what you need. there comes a time when you've played the game enough that you only need to set labors once per dwarf for the most part.
>>
>>163546327
>it's really simple.
Yeah if you have therapist.
Then you have clear visual interface where you can do everything by one LMB click and not fuck around setting labours for 100+ dorfs manualy, one dorf at the time.

I rarely have idlers and I'm aware of which dwarves died during an attack and what they did, because I know my dwarves. I could list you the number of dwarves in my fort for each labor, because I'm used to assigning labors and keeping track of this sort of thing. it really just sounds to me like therapist is being used as a crutch for you, and is causing you to not invest in what your dwarves do and what they are. it's fine to use it like that, there's nothing wrong with it(other than playing without joint damage in this instance), but saying that "It's impossible for anyone to be as efficient as I am without it!" is completely wrong.

Out of 100 rounds the human won 49 times and the human300int 51. In the second set the human won 49 times and the human300int 51.

Out of 100 rounds the human won 49 times and the human300kin won 51. In the second set the human won 43 times and the humans300kin 57.

Out of 100 round the human won 46 times and the human300spa 54. In the second set the human won 48 times and the human300spa 52.

Same results on three sets, funny.

Are there any good tutorials on taverns? I haven't played for a year or more. Preferably a video tutorial or lets play.
>>
>>163569067
Try quantum stockpiles, aka dumps. A single dump tile can hold infinite items, so mine out a tile in the wall next to your mine and designate it as a dump, then set all the new stones just mined to be dumped. That way haulers will only carry to the dump, which is much closer to the mine than your stockpile which just cut down on hauling time. When you feel your running low on stone, just unforbid from the dump and then your dwarves will go retrieve it.

I like to put my main workshops/farms above/below/around a setup kinda like this one, where there is a universal "in" pile (or piles) with 3 wheelbarrows (each) and a trackstop with a hauling route set to take certain items from the feeder and dump it onto a single tile pile which accepts from links only (and has none) but you need to set up a different arrangement for barrels and pots since they'll end up being hauled in/out of the qsp to the feeder and whatnot endlessly sometimes if you don't designate things in exactly the right order.

I just put out big booze piles where needed and qsp the non-barrel stuff, I'd do the same with bins but I never started to use them originally so I just kinda forget about them most of the time.

Fuck I can't ever play a fortress for more than a week, any tips you guys have for not being bored? I end up getting horribly bored once I get farms and shit set up.
>>
>>163586710
Set smallish and consistent goals for yourself. One of my first goals is to make sure that every piece of furniture is masterpiece quality. Shit like that.
>>
>>163586710
what >>163586787 said.

Aim for a project of your own. For me it's always something impossible, like a beautiful dwarven empire. I'll spend vast amount of resources making halls pretty and filled with masterwork stuff. Waterfalls at the entrance.

What kills it for me though is performance. Even with an i7 CPU 2600k I enter CPU hell at some point and shit halts down. Making only one path way for instance goes against how I build so I never build with optimized FPS in mind.

Usually if I get a really good fort done I enter the depths. I dig to the void and setup defenses / traps and try to survive whatever demons crawl out.
>>
>>163586710
Don't go for optimal starts. That doesn't mean nerfing yourself, but it does mean "don't restart just because you didn't get a volcano, and/or no iron."

I was having a load of fun in a fort that only had access to silver and copper. Figuring out how to defend yourself is a challenge.
I did lose the fort early on to a Great Cave Toad. Apparently they can strangle, so they just instakilled half my dwarves while they were dealing with a Great Saltwater Croc. The rest didn't have weapons to kill the things with so they just kept punching them ineffectually.
(using the War and Mythos mod, it makes things harder with the increased prevalence of dangerous wildlife).

Do some crazy shit - providing basics for eternal fort is pretty much very easy but doing something weird and specific is where the FUN is.

It simulates the geological formation of sedimentary, extrusive, igneous, etc, etc types of rock through simulating weather. Not sure if it simulates plate movements but at the very least the mountain placement is random.

I'm not a geologist so forgive me if what I think that means isn't, well, what it actually means, but no, there's only one type of schist in the game as far as I'm aware.

I'd take a look at http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Stone
>>
>>163592214

It wasn't a joke. I was asking if there was more than one example of rocks with schistosic qualities. Due to it's metamorphic nature schist comes in with many different properties, from grain size right down to its very mineralogy. It's difficult to identify schist as just schist, there are frequently so many things going on with it that you have several hundred variants of something frequently identified with one name.

This is an important concept to grasp because schist is often a host rock for many gemstones, and presumptively in a game like dwarf fortress this would probably be important information to grasp.
