Upgrade attempts are chance based, just like getting a card, or slotting gear, or getting the stat you want enchanted on your armor. Each of these cases means doing numerous attempts until you get what you want.

Success on weapon upgrade attempts vary by weapon level, armor upgrade attempts are the same as weapon level 4 attempts, except you can get better upgrade chance on weapons from a White smith. When I want to make a +10 comp bow, I farm more than the average number of bows it takes to get one to +10, 21 bows, then I break several until I get what I'm after, sometimes I get lucky and get more +10's than I expected, sometimes unlucky and not as many.

Seriously, the first thing I always make is a Hunter and Priest at the same time. You can leach the acolyte to priest with the hunter until it has TU then level it at anubis, or just leach it until it's got bless and increase agi. An NPC bought Hunter Bow will take you a long way when you're starting out. Hunters are good for farming gear for your other characters.

You absolutely can, yes. Join a guild.

Yeah, if you want to play a priest you'll basically be fine without gear forever, and you won't feel like you're lacking buffs and shit if you play solo. The downside is Priest can't farm zeny or gear very well.

A hunter can farm its own gear entirely, but you're going to want those buffs. Leveling an acolyte just to get bless and agi (and probably warp portal, considering the DoM warper doesn't warp you everywhere) really doesn't take that long at all.

Having a hunter to farm your shit and buffs in town is all you need for supporting any other character.
