Are you sure you arent mixing up hard and lunatic? It honestly sounds like you need to git gud

I only really use pair up for transportation or protecting weak units if a swarm of enemies comes from all sides. It can also help some units double if they can't double by themselves. But other than that it's way more useful to put units right next to each other so they can still dual attack and dual guard but not be paired up. Generally units are better off alone or next to another unit vs paired up.

Play Nohr and capture Tsubaki to use. Play Hoshido and capture Charlotte. Etc. This was also before IK so I thought this was how we would be able to use unit from both sides. I assumed Royals wouldn't be captureable for plot reasons. What a disappointment when we learned the details. Well I guess capturing generics and bosses is still kinda cool.
