i'm going to give you guys the benefit of the doubt and assume you're just ignorant, not fucking retarded

the original resident evil came out at a time where 3d technology was in its infancy w/r/t video games, so control schemes and graphics were both portrayed in very archaic ways relative to what we're used to

what they did with resident evil as well as several other games of the generation (every PSX final fantasy, some scenes in zelda OOT and MM, etc etc) was draw out a 2d background, then divide it up into layers, then build an invisible 3d environment of collision objects, effectively saving the computation involved in rendering a full 3d environment and having a hand-crafted background to boot, it's called a pre-rendered background and it went a long way towards iconic and recognizeable scenes, not to mention it gave them a lot of computational overhead since it cost them very little to render

the difference in computation between this and rendering an actual 3d scene is so big that the GCN version of resident evil for example had enough power left over to render character models essentially a generation ahead of their time

however, as systems have gotten more powerful, technological tricks like this as well as artifacts like tank controls have faded away due to us becoming more comfortable with the medium as well as being much lazier in design due to how much excess power we have to work with

actually, bit of trivia, that image is the source of a bug in OoT, apparently at some point in development that room was planned to have 2 jars, but the artists only ended up drawing one. due to the fact the collision map has two, though, if you try to roll at that point in the background, you find yourself colliding at an intangible corner in the middle of the pot and the part of link that goes into it is overlapped by the "closer" part of the background to the frame, making a bit of him weirdly invisible, see pic to know what i mean
