How about this.

Meteors are announced. This gives the station time to send a small team of scientists and roboticists/miners by shuttle to a big meteor that's got rock on it like the asteroid. They got to remove the rock. Miners will drill rock with drills and Ripleys and scientists will plant the highest dev bombs they can make in 10 minutes before time runs out.

Depending on their success and how much rock is left in ten minutes, the meteors that come will be less in intensity or be nothing at all.

There would be a bit of decision making to it, you could rush Ddrills, rush maxdev bombs, or rush ordering things from cargo and make a drilling militia in ghetto spacesuits. Or hole up in the AI core as usual.
