Am I doing something wrong or does Guardian Druid just feel awful to play? I play each tank fairly regularly except Druid, and everytime I give it a shot, it feels bad. I thought gear would make a difference but I'm ~700 now and its still feels I take a shit ton of damage and stacking lacerates feels like such an outdated mechanic.

I wasn't there for the initial launch but started in late 2006. Things are much more complicated now but take less time to do since there are no massive timesinks anymore. Leveling up takes like under two weeks if you use the dungeon finder whereas I had 17d played time the first time I hit lvl 60. People have a lot more alts now, which I kinda dislike, due to the ease of leveling. Then again you are sort of forced to do the fucking legendary ring quest line and languish nigh eternally in LFR for the stones and tablets and shit. Classes had class specific quests, profession trainers past 150 were located somewhere in the world (Artisan Enchanting trainer, for example, was in Uldaman).

It's a pretty big part of your life at that point. A lot in my life has changed, for better and worse, but WoW has been the only thing that has remained. Quitting could be compared to cutting ties to an old friend you have known since elementary school or something.

Fury for AOE fights, Arms for ST/cleave fights. Fury is technically the better spec but Arms has a few fights in HFC where it's way better. Just pick one and stick with it; unless you're doing world firsts the difference is so minimal it doesn't matter and comes down to playstyle preference.

Did a few heroics and it wasn't so bad actually. Silver grounds as a druid was a nightmare though, they seem horribly suited for it. Also they just feel slow, despite having the mobility of a druid.
