Long version:
In RB1, upon the death of the original goddess, she split into four children asteroids style, and Histoire and Arfoire being the only members of the party that is still alive take it upon themselves to raise them up properly.

Unfortunately, Arfoire copied the original goddess's power during the conflict, and apparently it has some mind warping powers. By the start of the game she has basically become a copy of the original goddess in personality, if not in ability.

So to regain her goddess abilities, she made the goddess hate each other to create opportunities for her steal their powers back, messed with share magic, sealed away Histoire, etc etc just play the game.

HDN1 however has a very different origin story for the goddesses and Arfoire, so, no, it doesn't really get explained any better.

So to anyone who has finished Neptral Tower in RB2, what did you prioritize on your Stone accessory to survive? I have one with 1st Aid and that seems to help a lot but the monsters using poison on the upper levels really seem to trounce that. Would Poison Defense actually prevent Stella from getting poisoned or does it only lessen the chance of it?

It's been a while, so the details might be wrong. But basically, in HDN, the original Goddess went berserk, leading to the Quartet beating her up. Seeing how too much power was a dangerous thing, the Goddess split her powers up into a tome and a Goddess, which was Histoire and Arfoire (Whether Arfoire herself was the Goddess or the one after the original isn't really clear). So that only with Histoire's permission are massive changes to the world allowed.

Arfoire then got tired of ruling the world, as the hardship was too much for a single Goddess, so she begged Histoire to create new Goddesses as well as advance the world to the point that no one remembered her as a Goddess. This led to the creation of the main four. Then Arfoire wanted to be a Goddess again and sow discord among the four Goddesses, telling each of them that the other three would destroy their nation if they didn't become the True Goddess.

After a really long time of brainwashing, they started fighting each other while Arfoire started the Overlord thing to gain power through fear. She also sealed Histoire to prevent her from warning the Goddess. All in turn, this led to the start of the game.
